The heat wave continued  on Sunday morning here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. I was up early again  to get my hiking in and try and beat the heat. I have not seen any black bears visit my backyard in Hazle Township Luzerne County this year. And I only saw one bear , briefly,  on my hike to Bruce Lake in Pike County. I love to encounter, and photograph these beautiful   often misunderstood…

MELPOMENE SOLARA- The star goddess"

Perhaps the most brutal of Lady Visha’s children, Melpomene was uniquely different from her first three siblings. Where she came from, little is known. In 119 AC she was presented by her mother to the royal courts in Kings Landing.

The popular rumor that seemed to take root was that she was conceived from witchcraft, as Melpomene was quite the conniving girl–And took great delight in the misfortune of others.

Despite this, she was often referred to as the star goddess as she always seemed to particularly glow in the night, frequently keeping the company of fortune tellers and common-born witches in flea bottom.

Two men from House Targaryen seemed to be quite taken with Lady Melpomene, one with hatred and the other pure wonder. It is said the lady had much and more fun playing her games with both princes and held no particular loyalty to either.

🔮 ⤷ UFO Crash Site

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the UFO Crash Site, an interesting hidden location in-game. With so little information surrounding it and its purpose, it has got me thinking about the origins of this UFO and it's meaning to the overall Jorvigian lore and storyline.

Location:

The UFO Crash Site is a named location that is located at the coordinates X:137, Y:119 in Northlink, just behind the Baroness' Racetrack and Silverglade Manor.

Its interesting placement is in the currently greyed-out area of the Northern Mountain Range, and as far as I'm aware, the only accessible area in this region that is allowed.

Following a dirt track behind the Championship at the Racetrack, the UFO Crash Site can be accessed through a secret pathway hidden behind dense foliage further up the track.

'They Come In Peace':

'They Come In Peace' is an achievement that can be unlocked by dismounting in-front of the UFO and typing '/gestures' in-chat (a hidden player action that cannot be accessed through the emote menu!).

On a side note, I did try completing this achievement, but for some reason have not been given it. Whether that's a bug or that gaining the achievement has now been removed from the game entirely I'm not too sure.

Theories:

But do they really come in peace? Several ideas floating around about the history of this UFO suggest otherwise.

The most common theory about this UFO suggests that this was the ship that contained Garnok when he arrived in Jorvik.

Little is known about the details of Garnok's arrival, but it is said that he crash-landed somewhere off of the coast of the island in a starship (an idea first introduced in Starshine Legacy: Episode Three), which would also explain why there have been some appearances of him off of the coast during both the trail-ride in the Halloween event, and in Starshine Legacy: Episode Four.

This does question the validity of this theory, as the UFO Crash Site is not only miles away from any coast-line, but is also in the middle of a mountain range.

Other theories suggest that since we now understand that Fripp also does not come from Pandoria, but similarly also from somewhere unknown, this could be the ship that transported him here instead. In my personal opinion, I think that this could make a lot more sense theoretically, but given, again, the lack of canon information surrounding Fripp's origins, it is all very up in the air.

However, we can explore the reasons supporting why Fripp may have a connection to this mysterious ship. Location-wise, the UFO is located in the Northern Mountain Range, and therefore very close to where Valedale, the entrance to the Secret Stone Circle, and the majority of the known Druids live. Also, as simple as it sounds, I think that the blue glowing symbols all over the ship itself seem to correlate more with Fripp and his appearance than with what we know of Garnok.

I really hope we get more information on this weird little area, and perhaps about its importance to the history of the island. Perhaps if we ever get more access to the rest of the Northern Mountain Range, we'll get a chance to discover more about it!

ChouGAMER!! Pretty Cure Info Post

This is not comprehensive, and I'm missing a lot of nomenclature for transformation items, finishers, and alternate forms/styles. I'm also lacking visual references for a few of the villains.

Let's start with the Cures!

The Pretty Cure are the legendary gamers of Virtua Land, who even have a temple to enshrine the new incarnations of each of the four Legends. The temple is overseen by the Grand Wizard, whose duty is to find the next generation of Pretty Cure should crisis befall Virtua Land.

To transform, the Cures need two things: their Check Pendant, a necklace/communicator that contains their "save data", and one of three Game Cards, devices that resemble train passes and contain the "game data", including a piece of equipment unique to each Cure. Every Cure begins at Level 1 and gains EXP via prevailing in combat against the Guricchu. As the "season" progresses, the Cures unlock progressively stronger equipment, finishers, and eventually unlock their second and third Game Cards.

Yuuki Igarashi is our white lead Cure, Cure Legend. Her theme is classic JRPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Though she strikes a very gyaru-like image, don't be fooled—she's a hardcore gamer, though she initially keeps that side of herself hidden from her classmates. Her friends call her Yuu-tan. Her initial Game Card is Innocent Fantasy, which comes with the equipment Brave Sword.

Yuuki is 5'3", weighs 104 pounds, has an AB blood type, and her three sizes are 83-57-84. She is 16 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is January 1st.

Kaya Karizaki is our blue Cure, Cure Bullet. Her theme is shooter games, both military-style FPS-es and bullet hell games. Kaya is quite egotistical and self-absorbed due to being a champion eSports player, but she's also a fiercely loyal friend who's not afraid to throw hands to protect those she loves. Her initial Game Card is Dangan XX, which comes with the equipment Buster Shot K.

Kaya is 5'5", weighs 113 pounds, has an O blood type, and her three sizes are 82-55-82. She is 17 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is October 10th.

Mika Hayase is our red Cure, Cure Turbo. Her theme is racing games, specifically arcade-style racing games. In comparison to the outgoing Yuuki and the loud, boisterous Kaya, Mika is extremely shy and difficult to approach, let alone talk to. Her family owns an auto repair shop with an attached junkyard, and she's spent several years working on cars and fixing up junkers for her parents to sell. Despite her shyness, she gets extremely intense when playing racing games. Mika's initial Game Card is Gekisou Full Throttle, which comes with the equipment Turbo Rusher.

Mika is 5'4", weighs 119 pounds, has an A- blood type, and her three sizes are 87-58-89. She is 18 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is on August 8th.

Ren Tatsumaki is our yellow Cure, Cure Dragon. Her theme is fighting games, specifically arcade-style fighting games. Ren is a strange individual in every conceivable way, from being notably very tall to not understanding what should be basic common knowledge. Frankly speaking, she's simply an eccentric weirdo that's difficult to understand, but her skill at fighting games is unmatched. Ren's initial Game Card is Kachidoki Prizefight, which comes with the equipment Champion Knuckle.

Ren is 5'10" and weighs 122 pounds, has a B+ blood type, and her three sizes are 80-56-82. She is 17 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is on July 7th.

Fia is our mid-season redeemed villain purple Cure, Cure Fever. Her theme is twofold: rhythm games and puzzle games. As a former agent of the Guricchu, Fia has a difficult time understanding almost everything about human culture, and her seeming inability to express emotion compounds that. If you do get a rise out of her, woe unto you.

Fia is 5'2" and weighs ??? pounds, has a ?? blood type, and her three sizes are ??-??-??. She is ?? at the time she joins the team, and her birthday is on November 11th.

Arcade is not a Cure in and of herself, but rather is the Cures' token helper from another world. She's a level 1000 Grand Wizard and keeper of the Legendary Temple in Virtua Land, which has been invaded by the Guricchu. As the keeper of the Legendary Temple, it falls to Arcade to find the four Legendary Gamers, the Pretty Cure, and save Virtua Land.

Arcade is a prodigy, being the youngest Grand Wizard in Virtua Land's history, and that comes with a bit of an ego. However, she cares deeply about games, and Virtua Land as a whole, and as such takes her position as aide to the Legendary Gamers very seriously. She also talks quite archaically, funnily enough.

Arcade is 4'9", weighs 94 pounds, has a ?? blood type, and her three sizes are 78-54-79. She is ??? at the start of the "season", and her birthday is December 12th.

Now for some villains!

The villains in ChouGAMER!! Precure are the Guricchu, an insectoid alien race that harvest negative feelings that stem from people playing video games, whether it's anger, sadness, or anything else. The monsters they summon are called Fukoheida, and the grunts that accompany Fukoheida are called Chumins.

Gokipunch is the first and most prominent general in the "season". Though quite weak at first, Alphan's philosophy of winning through trickery spoke to her, and she opportunistically took advantage of several moments of weakness among her higher-ups to get promoted to one of Alphan's generals, something unheard of among her caste of Guricchu.

Gokipunch is quite mean-spirited, often mocking the Cures or picking at their individual insecurities to get them to falter in battle. She also has the ability to inflict [Charm] status on civilians, causing them to follow her orders until the spell is broken. Her Fukoheida have her antennae and bright pink eyes, while her Chumins are all cockroach-inspired. Gokipunch herself is loosely themed on dating sims and visual novels.

Mothrom is the second of Alphan's generals to appear. Though seemingly disinterested and lethargic, she's arguably more sadistic and cruel than Gokipunch, using her associated [Poison] status on civilians and Cures alike to harvest higher quantities of negative energy and summon stronger Fukoheida.

Mothrom is loosely themed around tabletop games, and many of the Fukoheida she summons are with the aid of painted miniatures that she's often shown working on during the "episodes" she appears in.

Fear is Fia pre-redemption, and serves as the first dark/evil Cure figure for the girls to fight. Her battle form is themed off of horror games, from slasher thrillers to zombie games to survival horror. Eventually, she's defeated by the ChouGAMER!! team and later joins them.

Deadhand is the second humanoid general and quasi-dark/evil Cure figure. Deadhand is Alphan's hunting dog of sorts, and is originally summoned to recapture Fia and bring her back, but eventually Alphan orders them to destroy the Precure. The resemblance to Kaya is quite uncanny, and mentioned several times over the course of the "season". Deadhand's combat abilities are themed around card games, and they have a deck of ability cards they swipe through the card reader on their wrist to fight with.

Alphan is the leader of the Guricchu. She shows a fondness and even care for her subordinates, but when it comes to Earth and particularly the Precure (and those they love), the best way to describe her is heartless and cruel. At the end of the day, she wants them to suffer and harvest their energy.

On the Road Again

The low temperature this morning was 35 degrees, and the forecast said it might reach 51 during the day. It only made it to 49, but at least there was no rain. Or not much of it. We were gone for a good chunk of the day, so we were not able to keep tabs on the weather at home. But we saw some blue sky and sunshine during our drive.

My blood sugar this morning was back to 162. Whew! After our coffee and brain games, Nancy did a little yoga, and I got on the computer to check social media. Then we had oatmeal for breakfast.

We decided to get out of the house for the day, since we stayed in all day on Valentine’s Day. Our first stop was at Old Crow down at the corner for a mocha to accompany us.

As we headed south, we checked in with Nancy’s sister, Joan, to see if she wanted to escape with us, but her schedule was already filled for the day. We will call a little sooner for our next adventure.

We drove just past Roseburg, to Exit 119, where OR 99 and 42 take off together. We stayed on OR 42 and eventually reached the Sandy Creek Bridge, near the community of Remote.

Built in 1921, the bridge carried OR 42 over the creek until it was bypassed by a newer bridge in 1949. In 1984, after restoration by volunteers from the Lions Club of Myrtle Point, the structure became a display in a county park at the same site. It is the only remaining covered bridge in Coos County. It was added the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. That’s another one we can check off our list of remaining covered bridges in Oregon to visit.

We continued on through Myrtle Point and Coquille toward Coos Bay. Along the way we passed a long line of fire engines and law enforcement vehicles, lights blazing, heading for what appeared to be some kind of funeral or memorial. We were probably more impressed by the parade than the cars that wound up following the parade.

Once we reached Coos Bay, we stopped at a little place called Shake ’n’ Burger for a bite of lunch. The burgers were good and the fries were excellent. They also provided a bottle of ranch dressing for the fries, which is something I have only recently become accustomed to using. We didn’t go for shakes, which was probably a good thing, because the meal alone filled us up more than sufficiently.

Heading north on U.S. 101, made a brief stop see the Umpqua River Lighthouse. Located at the mouth of Winchester Bay, Oregon, the first lighthouse was built in 1855 and lit in 1857. Constructed along the river channel, the original building was vulnerable to seasonal flooding, and in October 1863, the foundations had become unstable and the structure collapsed. It was 1888 before Congress approved of a construction of a new light.

Construction of the new light began in 1892. It was lit in 1894. It was built at the same time as the Heceta Head Lighthouse from the same plans and is virtually identical to the northern light. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Visitors can tour the lighthouse and the adjacent Coastal History Museum year round, though hours are shorter in the winter. The museum is located in a historic U.S. Coast Guard station and features exhibits on the lighthouse, local history and the U.S. Coast Guard history on the Umpqua River. We did not take time for a tour, but we did stop at the guest shop for some chocolates.

Back on the 101, we went north to Reedsport, where we took off east on OR 38. We briefly paused to look at the elk on view at the Dean Creek Wildlife Area. Jointly managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the United States Bureau of Land Management, Dean Creek is the year-round residence for a herd of Roosevelt elk. Elk have inhabited the area for nearly 100 years.

When we reached Drain, we stopped at Uncle John’s for another mocha. Once we were back on I-5, the low fuel warning light came on, so before going home we went to the Costco in Eugene to fill up the tank. The price had gone up six cents, to $3.35 per gallon, since our last fill-up on Feb. 10.

We managed to get home before the darkness descended, and we made dinner, cooking another pot of rice, heating up the leftover pinto beans, and stirring them together with shredded cheese and salsa. Nancy spooned in some guacamole once again.

Then we showered off the dirt from the day to save some time getting ready for church on Sunday morning.

We started our streaming with another episode of “The Mick.” It was too comedically chaotic for more than one, so we looked around and found that “Resident Alien” had arrived for its third season on Netflix, so we watched the first episode. Then we finished the evening once again with “Still Standing” and Jonny Harris exploring the communities of New Richmond, Quebec, and Lac La Biche, Alberta.

Some rain finally arrived just before we were ready to go to bed. The forecast said it would continue throughout Sunday, with a low of only 43 degrees and a high of just 49. As usual, we’ll wait to see what the day actually brings.

Miami Heat Land Tellis Frank in Deal with Golden State

On October 2nd, 1989, the Golden State Warriors traded forward Tellis Frank to the Miami Heat for a 1990 second round draft pick (Steve Bardo).

The Golden State Warriors were looking for some frontcourt helped heading into the 1987 NBA Draft. One player on the team's list was Western Kentucky forward Tellis Frank. Standing 6-9 and at 240 pounds, Frank had a surprise senior campaign, winning the 1986-87 Sun Belt Player of the Year after improving his scoring average from 10.2 PPG in his junior year to 18.0 the following season.

Frank was Golden State's choice for the 14th selection in the draft. The team and coach George Karl envisioned Frank as able to toggle between both forward positions.

After being drafted, Frank signed a three-year contract with the Warriors. Frank had a solid role in his rookie season but was inconsistent. The forward appeared in 78 games (29 starts) and amassed 8.1 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.4 APG and 0.7 SPG in 20.5 MPG. A concern was Frank's home and road splits which became a story throughout the season.

Golden State began the 1987-88 season just 1-9. The losing continued as the Warriors found themselves an NBA-worst 3-18 after 21 games. With the team at 16-48, coach Karl resigned after he wasn't given a contract extension by team owner Jim Fitzgerald. Assistant Ed Gregory took over on an interim basis.

Warriors minority owner and general manager Don Nelson signed on to become head coach for the 1988-89 season. As Gregory finished out the season, the Warriors finished the year with the third-worst record in the NBA (20-62).

Soon the roster would start to morph under Nelson. The Warriors had the fifth pick in the 1988 draft and selected Kansas State guard Mitch Richmond.

Golden State shifted to a perimeter-heavy attack around Chris Mullin, Richmond and Winston Garland. After going 5-3 in the first eight games, Golden State was 3-9 in the next 12 games to fall to 8-12. The Warriors would get back on track, with a 23-9 record to reach 31-21 after 52 games.

Golden State was in fourth place after 76 games with a 43-33 record. The club lost its final six games to fall to 43-39 and seventh place in the Western Conference. Frank saw a drastic reduction in minutes under Nelson. The forward made only 32 appearances and managed 3.3 PPG, 1.9 RPG and 0.5 APG in 7.7 MPG. A hyperextended right shoulder caused Frank to miss the final 20 games of the regular season.

The Warriors went on to the playoffs where they faced the 51-31 Utah Jazz in the first round. In the series opener, the Warriors led for much of the game. The first game saw Mullin score 41 points in a 123-119 win. Game Two was close but the Warriors outscored the Jazz 28-17 in the fourth quarter to win 99-91. The Warriors completed a 3-0 series sweep with a 120-106 win at home.

In the West Semifinals, Golden State matched up with the Phoenix Suns. The series opener saw four different Suns players score at least 19 points in a 130-103 Suns blowout win. Mullin had 37 points and nine rebounds as the Warriors went on an 11-2 run at the end of the game to win 127-122.

In the third game Chambers had 12 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as Phoenix won 113-104. The fourth game saw Phoenix win in a 135-99 rout. In Game Five, Suns guard Kevin Johnson had 24 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists in a 116-104 Suns win and a 4-1 Phoenix series victory. Frank did not play in Golden State's 1989 playoff run.

Nelson continued to tinker with the Warriors roster in the 1989 offseason. Golden State selected point guard Tim Hardaway 14th overall in the draft. The Warriors kept Frank protected in the 1989 expansion draft from incoming franchises the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves. Golden State lost guard Otis Smith to the Magic in the expansion draft after leaving him unprotected.

With a crowded roster and no chances for minutes, Nelson and the Warriors sent Frank to the Miami Heat for a second round pick before the start of the season. The Warriors would have the option of claiming the pick (originally from the Cleveland Cavaliers) in either 1990 or 1992.

Frank had been a rumored trade candidate to the Miami Heat since the middle of the 1988-89 season. He was essentially showcased by Golden State in a January game against Miami where he had 15 points and four steals in a start.

As the first trade acquisition in the Miami Heat's franchise history, Tellis Frank received a new opportunity to play. The Heat got off to a 3-4 start in the first seven games. The losses would soon pile up.

The team had six losing streaks of more than five games including an 0-13 stretch from mid-December to mid-January. Miami still had a three-win improvement from its inaugural year with an 18-64 record. Frank's role was larger in Miami than in Golden State. The forward played in 77 games (39 starts) and put up 9.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.1 APG and 0.7 SPG in 22.9 MPG.

After the season, the Heat did not tender a qualifying offer to Frank, making him an unrestricted free agent. He signed a contract overseas to play in Italy with Phonola Conserta.

The second round draft pick that the Heat sent to Golden State originally came from the Cavaliers in a deal for guard Darnell Valentine. Golden State sent the future selection to the Atlanta Hawks in a 1990 draft night deal centered around point guard Rumeal Robinson. The pick was 41st in the 1990 draft and was used on guard Steve Bardo from the University of Illinois.
