Do people who live within the ecosystem of the Gambel's quail know how lucky they are? These little fellas are really something special

the gambel’s quail is a small quail species found primarily in the southwestern united states; they are also somewhat commonly kept in captivity. males are distinguished from females by their black facial markings; however, both sexes are overall gray. this species looks very similar to the california quail; however, the gambel’s quail has a notable black marking on the belly. this species primarily feeds on insects and plant matter collected from the ground. they most frequently travel by foot, and their clumsy flight is often described as ‘explosive’ - startled quails will burst into the air seemingly with no warning. their chicks are precocial, and will leave the nest within hours of hatching; during their youth, their diet is almost entirely insects.
