BOTD: Wilson's Snipe

"Often overlooked in migration and winter, the snipe is a solitary creature of wet fields and bogs, seldom seen on open mudflats. Flushed from the marsh, it darts away in zigzag flight, uttering harsh notes. The Wilson's Snipe becomes more flamboyant in the breeding season, when it often yammers from atop a fencepost or dead tree. At night on the nesting grounds, the ghostly winnowing flight sound of the males often echoes across the marshes."

side note: i have a feeling the second clip is of some kind of snipe rather than of the American Woodcock.

note the stripes on the head and how they are roughly parallel to the bird's bill, with a thick darker stripe down the middle. the woodcock has a tan patch that extends from the start of its bill to above its eyes. after the end of this patch are horizontal stripes of white and dark brown

the stripe pattern shown more closely resembles a jack snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus), common snipe (Gallinago gallinago), or Wilson's snipe (Gallinago delicata - this was recognized as a suspecies of G. gallinago [common snipe] until 2003, as G. gallinago delicata). my guess is either a common snipe or Wilson's snipe, based in part on the color - the stripes appear white-ish, not yellow/orange

also the specific name ("delicata") for Wilson's snipe means "dainty" hehe

Wilson's Snipe (via USFWS Mountain-Prairie)

Wilson's snipe is a small, stocky shorebird. The genus name gallinago is New Latin for a woodcock or snipe from Latin gallina, "hen" and the suffix -ago, "resembling". The specific delicata is Latin for "dainty".

It's not a bird I often see, and when I do, they tend to be hidden or have unattractive, messy backgrounds, so I was thankful for the clean look at this one.

The Wilson’s Snipe (Gallinago delicata) was named after Alexander Wilson, considered by many to be the father of American ornithology. The term “sniper” was coined in the 1770s by the British soldiers in India who hunted snipe as a game bird. At top flight speed these birds are estimated to achieve 60 mph.
