I'll say one thing about dredge, no game has as rapidly recontextualized itself in my eyes as when i drove up to what i thought was a shipwreck only for it to come alive as a crab and attempt to smash my ship
I stared at that for a good long while processing
#dredge#like i didnt even see any anglers in the marrows before i left because i stuck so close to the cove#and gale cliffs was expected yknow big fuckin eel that i cant avoid no matter how i try thats expected#thats big video game monster level i expected that#the crab? the fucking crab? that made me jump so fucking hard#and theres only 3 of them in the whole fucking game but that first one made me.view all shipwrecks after it with suspicion#getting to stellar basin and looking in the put to fucking hell and seeing the gianormous tentacle demon was#another good recontextualization moment as now it wasnt just oh big video game monster no#it was a primal sorta terror as im like oh fuck no no no non no thank you im not going over that pit holy shit#i inched my way around that thing i stayed as far from the pit as i could initially#the switch from video game monsters to oh this is a horror show was so good

Every Dredge Aberration (2023), Bonus II
A beastly lord slinks through cavern and cliff. He slugs through earth and time and the wind joins his bellow before he returns to his recluse. Eventually, a pestilent sound rouses him from his burrow. There is an interloper above his halls, and they will know his wrath. No trespass evades his infernal gaze, and no vessel escapes his collection. Well, maybe all but one. “Serpent” they call the cliffs’ master, a name which lends the mind to instance threads of devilry and epic mythos. Such analogies are definitely not inappropriate for the giant aberration that stalks the Gale Cliffs. For two decades, he has patrolled and altered their passageways with slow lurch, one burning coal of an eye scanning for food or foe. Armed with strength to grind through rocksides, petrified scales, and a toothed maw fit to cleave through the largest of the world’s mammals, not even the seasoned whalers of the region play challenge to this monster. No mere fisherman could hope to test his ire and return unscathed…none, save the very man who may have indirectly led to its birth.
Hatched in the Hollow
Unlike the hostile angler of the previous area, the Gale Serpent has had no shadow of mystery set over its creation. Originally approaching this, and gathering information, I assumed I was to theorize some horrible mutation of a local fish gone awry, as I did with the Marrows Angler. The conger eel aberration was of special interest for demonstrating the ability of the Entity’s corruption to transform flesh to crystal and rock. Howbeit, there is an obelisk to the Southeast corner of the Gale Cliffs which flips this original hunch completely around. The Serpent, in fact, was not life turned to stone, but lifeless rock given soul.
All it had taken was for the crimson sorcery to seep into a deep crevice, as it is adept to, far down into the hearth of the very mountains themselves until this great eel had breached through- The wyrm, sculpted my malice, and animated by a dark energy, is in fact the one behind the detriment of the settlements around its home. Its tunneling through the underwater crags was named as causing the collapse of an entire village, which also coincided with the disappearance of the whales that the neighboring town so relied on for a thriving industry. Stories told of both corroborate that, like all strange occurrence fanning out from The Marrows, the serpent’s creation was spurred by someone dredging up the Book of the Deep. This would put the age of the beast at 20 some odd years, likely the same as the other nightmares of the major islands. In all of that time, the Serpent has in turn sculpted the cliffs into a proper domain for his liking. One that all but the well-prepared and bold dare encroach upon.
A Dragon of the Depths
The concept of the Gale Cliff’s snake would appear delightfully inspired from a great shadow of the horrors thought of by men. From the biblical leviathan, to coiling Jormundgandr, to the many aquatic wyrms of Greek tales, the sea serpent has been a subject repeated through vast swaths of oceanic legend. Where landlubbers dreamed of great scaled predators that ruled the skies and earth, there were likewise the dragons of the seamen’s paranoia, equally as tenacious and fearsome. Through the power of the Deep, these fears were brought to reality in this massive eel. His length alone dwarves the fisherman’s boat by about 5 or 6 times, and his bite is twice as punishing as the Night Angler’s. With the whales he once feasted on no longer in range of his hunting ground, he’s more than willing to make meal of the pirates and sailors that are brave enough to return. Though having no use for human trinkets, he greedily drags our treasures down to keep in his lair, and he turns quick rage to those who venture to plunder his burrow. Like so many of the terrible dragons of men’s tales, he guards his hoard, he devours the livelihood of those living too close, and he lives in a labyrinth of his own design.
Tactics
Several factors about the Serpent make him a far less avoidable threat than the Angler, and many investigating the cliffs for the first time will learn this the hard way. Even still, he is far from an inevitable threat to one’s journey. For one, the light of day provides no protection from his attacks as can be expected in The Marrows. The serpent listens for visitors in the narrow wind tunnels between the mountains at all times. By the time he emerges from the cliffs, he has already began to hone in on the ship, making silence or shutting off the lights to hide a useless action. There is an amount of predictability to his charge, if one pays attention to the rockwalls throughout the Gale cliffs. There are a number of visible, gaping tunnels beneath the waterline, where he will reliably emerge from, or retreat into. Avoid passing directly by or over one of these if a quake begins. The landslides and shaking rumble are the telltale sign that he is both awake and hunting you. While he behaves no differently at night, the fog and its own effects make encounters with him all the more dangerous. The sudden rocks that will appear at high panic can slow down an escape or even present their own lethal threat. All except for his hateful eye, the fog makes him more difficult to spot at a distance, lending an even more sinister appearance to the monster in the darkness.
Another way to tell if one is being pursued is attention to the red tinge that will increasingly encroach on their vision. Its intensity can serve as an indicator of how closely he is approaching as well as a warning to quickly stop any fishing/dredging activity in order to make a getaway. As far as speed is concerned, it is the single weakness of the Serpent; this makes an upgraded engine or the use of the words of Haste most key in evading his attacks. Even a slower vessel might be able to corner him sharply enough for a near miss, but distance will be the greatest shield. Banishing words, when available, can also serve as a reliable deterrent.
Interestingly, the Serpent’s eye only opens when he is in a hostile state. If slinking away, or passive, it will remain closed.
The Serpent is such a sluggish swimmer, indeed, that any vessel with a base speed of 40 knots or more does not have much to fear from him even without the use of the book’s spells. Of course, it becomes no less important to still carefully navigate the passageways it will be traveling through. The maze of the cliffs and their frequent waterspouts make a panicked dash unfeasible, especially for boats possessing a weak hull integrity. In time, though, this mighty aberration will be left treading behind as the one before it.

DREDGE (2023) ▸ Gale Cliffs
There's Ingfell, just across the bay, which is a dreary little whaling town. The folks there are always in need of something, which keeps me in business. The residents are always talking about the cliffs. Most seem afraid. Frankly, I'm not sure why they stay. Occasionally I hear deep rumblings from within the rocks. I don't hang around here for long.

Since you guys seems to like dredge and scarlet hollow collab, here have another one😂
Here is Stella In dredge art style, and of course gretchen! Best doggy. I think it will be fun if each character is on a different location. I think she fits Gale cliff nicely
I would think she would be pretty chill about the situation, and would probably pretty excited to try and catch footage of the serpent in gale cliffs for her youtube channel😂

you should play Dredge
Played! I enjoyed it. I only have 7 hours in it, though.
In fact, my personal buddy is suuuuper into Dredge, it's his favorite game. We played it zealously together during a visit, during which I got absolutely mobbed by like every random monster ever at Gale Cliffs. The squid. The ray. The thing that rots your fish. The actual big mama monster who lives in the cliffs.
He remarked he had NEVER seen such bad luck before lmaoooo
Women want me but the fish do not fear me, sadly. The fish and I are engaged in mutually assured destruction.
#I like the idea of Dredge and its fishing#But it didn't scratch my itch in the way I hoped#I think it's because functionally you Are a boat#It's a fantastic game dgmw this is absolutely not a criticism. The choice to have the player only ever be in their boat is solid.#It contributes to the atmosphere and generally lonely and mysterious atmosphere of the setting#Both mechanically and artistically it is the ideal move.#It's just that player customization and social sim aspects are usually major parts of the games I enjoy most#Customization/sim elements/collectathons/survivalcraft/community management/sandboxes. Those are my jam.#So Dredge was not the answer to my prayers because it didn't have enough of my 'wishlist' mechanics. For lack of a better word#I will absolutely play more the next time I hangout with my buddy tho. It was a blast playing with him.#The joy of hanging out with someone who just really LOVES the game/movie/series you're experiencing

also! collection of my observations on the various enemies in Dredge! for people who are cowards like me and want to know the mechanics of these Guys!
It's as spoiler-free as possible, but I do have to reference the creatures and the area they appear in, so bear that in mind! JSYK I've been uploading this as a steam guide and have been updating that regularly with new info, so this tumblr guide is extremely outdated! Please check out steam for an updated list! (it should be one of the first guides on the page!)
ANGLERFISH
The 'ghost ship' you will see on the water at night. It seems to spawn around midnight, at some distance from your current location, so it's pretty easy to avoid if you're careful. (Sometimes when sleeping at Greater Marrow or Steel Point, you can see it spawn on the horizon - I assume it spawns a set distance from your location, regardless of where you are, but I have no way to confirm this.)
If it catches sight/starts pursuing you, it'll make a very distinct blaring foghorn noise. Sneaking around it isn't much use, but's not especially fast, so it's possible to outrun it if you want to. It can be easy to get lost in the fog while being chased, so it's safest to try and keep an idea of your nearest dock's location if you're out late at night.
If it catches up to you, it will attack you once (causing hull damage similar to crashing into an object) and then swim away. I assume it despawns at this point, as I haven't been attacked by it more than once in the same night.
Overall, it's more scary than it is dangerous.
GALE ROCKS LEVIATHAN
The large, eel-like creature that lives inside the cliff caves at Gale Rocks. It first appeared for me upon entering the cliff caves for the first time, from the large 'archway' nearest the village dock. It seems to always cross across the 'path' between the cliffs in the same spot, rising out of the water once to attack you before swimming away. Once you know this spot, it's easy to just wait for it to swim by and avoid the hit entirely.
After a time (it may be following completion of some story quests in the area) the creature will begin to swim around the bay at Gale Rocks regardless of time of day/night. It's quite slow, so you can avoid it if you like, but it does make it hard to get to fishing/dredging spots, and it will attack you even if you're idling (ie., not passing time by sailing.)
Like the Anglerfish, it will attack once, doing hull damage similar to crashing into an object, and then swim away. After this, it seems to despawn for a few in-game hours. Letting it attack you so you can explore the area more freely is a valid option, especially since navigating the tight areas can be a bit of a pain.
Again, more scary/intimidating than it is dangerous. Not completely avoidable like the Anglerfish, but pretty easy to deal with.
THE KRAKEN
The giant octopus at Stellar Basin. It lives inside the deep pit at the centre of the ring of islands. The spot is easily identifiable as it's surrounded by glowing blue plants/coral during the day, and bright pink jellyfish at night. The Kraken has large, harmless tentacles that rest around the edge of the pit, and several smaller, moving tentacles within.
It doesn't leave the pit at any time, and will not attack you if you don't stray into the water above the pit. If you do approach it, it will make a rumbling sound for a few seconds, and then quickly hit you with a tentacle. This attack, like the others, causes hull damage similar to crashing into an object. This creature is probably the easiest to avoid, as it doesn't pursue or seek you out in any way, and is only a danger if you deliberately cross above it.
At a certain point in the story, you will gain access to the ability to activate a device that a character claims will either scare the Kraken off for a while, or enrage it. The device will always scare it off, and you'll be safe to explore the entire area for as long as the device is running (which seems to be significantly long enough to check all the fishing/dredging spots you might need to.) When the device turns off, you will get a few seconds of warning as the Kraken climbs back up into the pit (via a rumbling sound).
Even less dangerous than the previous two, just visually intimidating.
MIND SUCKERS
These are (relatively) small, worm-like creatures that hide in the water at set locations within Twisted Strand. They are easy to see if you're vigilant, as they have bright yellow glowing orbs/eyes on their heads. They are initially invisible under the surface, but will slowly peer out of the water as you approach, giving you time to spot them, before emerging fully.
Mind Suckers are sensitive to movement, so when you see one emerge, just hold completely still for a few seconds until it sinks into the water again. In my experience, once they've disappeared into the water, they won't respawn for a while, similar to the other creatures. (Note that there are several of these creatures, and having one despawn won't despawn the rest of them - you'll need to repeat for each one.)
They're very easy to avoid if you're cautious, but if one does spot you moving, its yellow eyes will turn red and it will begin pursuing you. They're not especially fast or nimble, so you can outrun them, but the tight spaces can make it difficult to navigate, so the 'Banish' spell is a pretty safe way to get rid of them.
If they get within range of you, they will begin to cause the fisherman significant panic, similar to the whispering fog that spawns late at night. After a few seconds of this, they will lash out with a set of small tentacles, which I believe can cause hull damage (I managed to avoid being hit by/crashing into these tentacles, so I'm not 100% sure.)
As the story progresses, you will gain access to traps that can permanently remove the Mind Suckers from at least three key locations - I didn't explore enough following this to know if it removes all of them from the area, but I doubt it.
FIRE FISH & MAMA FISH
Fire Fish are small, orange/red fish that live in small groups around the ruins in Devil's Spine. They're pretty harmless on their own - they have a fairly small detection radius and will begin to chase you if you get too close. If they reach your boat, they'll begin making a lot of noise, but won't do any damage. They will, however, slow down your boat, which is very noticable if you have a large crowd on you. They're nimble, but not particularly fast, so you should be able to outrun them if you have a decently upgraded boat.
They're easy to see due to their bright colours, but they can look similar to the lava veins that also occur in the area. You can fairly easily avoid them by being very cautious and vigilant, so as to avoid getting too close to them.
The area has lots of barriers that you can destroy with bombs in order to reach places without disturbing the Fire Fish, but banish is also quite effective. They're also afraid of the hot vents scattered around the area, and will flee if you cross over one, so try to plan your routes if need-be.
Mama Fish is a much larger, paler version of the Fire Fish. She's still relatively small (about half the size of your boat.) She slowly patrols the area, and won't pay much attention to your comings and goings. You can hear her from pretty much anywhere in the Devil's Spines, and her 'roars' will get deeper and louder the closer she is (and be especially loud when she is actively chasing you - see below.)
Mama Fish is blind, so relies on the sound of her babies (Fire Fish) to target you. If her babies reach your boat and start making noise, Mama will start to head towards you. She's pretty slow and easy to avoid, so out-running her is a good solution. Banish will also cause the Fire Fish to disappear, and Mama will lose interest in you and back away.
I haven't been attacked by Mama, so I don't know exactly what she does, but I assume it's similar to every other creature (ie., hull damage.) I'll update when I have a clearer idea!
Fire Fish & Mama were the most frustrating enemy for me to get used to, but they're fairly easy to deal with if you're cautious!
OTHER:
WATER RUMBLES
The deep, roaring noises that you'll sometimes hear when crossing the ocean. Almost always completely harmless - just audio design that makes you nervous. The one exception I know of below.
SPINED LEVIATHAN
A large creature that will occasionally spawn following a 'water rumble' in the deep water nearby Twisted Strand. I've only seen it once, and it didn't attack me, but other players report being attacked (and instakilled) by it. This could be a result of lingering nearby for too long (I immediately moved away from it 'til I reached a dock) or a result of high panic levels.
If you spot it, just keep moving and you should be fine.
(Note: this is the same creature you'll see if you stray too far out-of-bounds from the edge of the map, as well as one other story-related appearance!)
SHIPWRECK CRABS
Giant crabs that disguise themselves as regular shipwrecks in set positions around the map. I found three of them during regular play. They will look exactly like a normal shoreline shipwreck, even having scrap dredging spots nearby, but will become active when you approach. They'll quickly stand up and lash out with their claws, but won't pursue you, and are easy to avoid as long as you don't get too close. If you do get hit, they do minor hull damage.
WHISPERING FOG
Not a creature so much, but it can pose a threat. This is the red/pink/purple patches of fog that appear late at night. They cause significant panic, but don't damage your boat at all. They're fairly easy to avoid, but you can run into them if you're already fleeing from another creature, like the Angler Fish. They're more of an annoyance than a real danger, imo!
BONUS: DOLPHINS AND WHALES
Completely harmless! They can bump your boat a little but won't cause damage and won't actively pursue you in any way. They're just normal little guys (:
If you have any other questions about the game, shoot me a message and I'll do my best to let you know!
#dredge#dredge game#this is long but.#i hate horror games and it would have been much easier if i could have read up about the enemies before i played#so here's this!#i tried to make it as spoiler-free as possible!

for Dredge Au, I thought of this like.. moments before i was about to drift off and legit SHOT UPRIGHT IN BED. What if each of the four turtle brothers were connected to each of the four big landmarks in each corner of the map? here's my thoughts, feel free to shuffle around the brothers
-Leo, Stellar Basin.(Feel like it makes sense considering how at night, stellar basin’s full of bioluminescent coral, jellyfish, etc. Leo could fit right in, esp how in canon his eye marks n stuff glow!!!! I can already see the art of a glowy aberration leo flitting amidst the coral/LH)
-Donnie, Gale Cliffs.( I Don’t have TOO much of a reason, other than that one person who did a fanart of Lavi had her holding a Decaying blackmouth, which is an aberration of a fish found near there. Plus, it just fits, for some reason.)
-Mikey, Twisted Strand. (I feel like maybe he’d be connected to the glowing mushrooms that decorate that area? Since he’s got his li’l spots. Deffo either was friends with the mind lurkers or was like ‘GET OUT OF MY TERRITORY!!!!’ the entire time. No in-between.)
-Raph, Devil’s Spine (Not really that many reasons, but maybe his scales could resemble magma, or He lives off the heat there. Plus all the jagged cliffs/rocks kind of match his spiky design, maybe if someone did fanart they could lean into it.)
Anyways, That's my anonymous word vomit, feel free to toss this ask, I just wanted to share some of my weird midnight lightbulb moments about your AU (I'm devouring it like a man(/gn) deprived btw)
hi hi hi!!! i LOVE that this is haunting you the way it's haunting us 💜 sidebar, "that one person" is gbao3 and is as responsible for the au as i am! all things are better when gb gets involved Confirmed [chin hands]
that's a really cute idea!! the fics haven't really dipped into proper lore yet, but gb and i did come down on the turtles being originally from the stellar basin. for those who haven't played the game, it's a pretty archipelago that has fish that glow at night and is famous for being where you can see an aurora. sooo pretty!! and dangerous. giant kraken in the middle of the ocean dangerous. also it's where a lot of the super deep-water fish are, and we liked leaning into the spookier designs there for the turtles!
BUT!! i do like the idea that they each enjoy different parts of the map! except for donnie, who largely chases fisherman-chan around the map, i suspect leo would have a particular liking for the devil's spine. it's nice and warm, and the buildings are fun to lounge on, and best of all, there aren't any people. well. except that one merchant that comes around from time to time. hm. he should probably do something about that before she gets any ideas about setting up shop permanently.
meanwhile, i think raph would enjoy hanging out around the basin since he really hates being alone and splinter lives in the ruined resort.
as for mikey, i see him spending a lot of time with raph to keep him company... but he also loves going off to hang around People. while donnie is obsessed with One Person (fisherman-chan) and leo distrusts all humans... well. except maybe this one (merchant-chan), mikey is like Wow!! People!! Sparkle Emoji. i could definitely see him getting fished up in nets All The Time, then swimming back home to tell raph about it and getting all huffy when raph gives him a lecture about safety. so i'd probably tie mikey more to the marrows and gale basin, since he likes to go see People.
#ask tag#dredge au#ah yes. the long ass meta post. welcome to desceros dot com everyone#also. donnie does have a particular liking for the twisted strand but. well. i shan't say. there's a fic coming up for that. tends hands c:

Dredge AU, but The Fisherman is a cross-country truck driver.
The different ports are diners (Gale Cliff's Air Man camp could be called Vine and Dine Diner, the Greater Marrow lighthouse is a diner called The Lantern, etc), the Trader is a fellow trucker who somehow is always on the same route as you, and the Collector is an alcohol store that is always open for business.
Instead of fishing, The Fisherman gets to pick up stuffed animals that tie them to the front of his truck.
#Dredge#I did a long drive yesterday and I thought about this#his outfit is exactly the same even for hot summer rides

Every Dredge Aberration (2024), Part 6
Decaying Blackmouth
Encyclopedia #136
Aberrant form of blackmouth salmon
Description:
A shimmering blackness permeates the flesh of this relentless fish. Muscles atrophied and decaying, but still it swims on.
Comment: I does me no pleasure to admit that this species was a particularly underwhelming discovery. Were this found in freshwater, literally nothing would even be amiss. Elaboration on that bit.
How to catch: Can be netted, but is also fairly easy to find with a little prodding about the Gale coasts. Expect to find them during the day.
Sprouting Eel
Encyclopedia #137
Aberrant form of cougar eel
Description:
An eruption of crystalline growths burst from its skin. Sharp shapes clatter and resonate together.
Comment: Now this creature... this is a true beauty of the Deep. Likely suffering, anomalous, but undoubtedly beautiful. It is rightful that a good-sized individual will fetch a fine dollar on the market.
How to catch: Before atrophy, I found this one to be a little tricky to bag. A preference for the narrow cliff passageways and its nocturnal nature already makes the cougar eel a risky quarry to seek. Additionally, it cannot be caught with a trawl net. Keep an ear up around those rock walls, lest you be caught unawares by a much larger stone eel. Lingers in shallow water.
Withered Ray
Encyclopedia #138
Aberrant form of devil ray
Description:
Rotten webbing spans the wings of this large ray. Sinews stretch and snap as it thrashes in futility.
Comment: An utterly infernal sight that likely makes for a pungent aroma. To its last breath, it flutters for the wind and waters, like the flag of the ship that is lost to the maelstrom.
How to catch: Though having a slightly higher base value than the sprouting eel, surprisingly, this ray is worth less than the former proportiona to how much inventory space it takes up. That coupled with the observation that it's an oceanic fish, only seen at night, does not make fishing for manta rays a recommended side venture for the easily panicked. If you seek money at this stage ir the story over completing the encyclopedia, you may be better to stick to wreckfish, sturgeons, or even the eels. An upgraded trawl net can handle them, but you will probably have access to bait by such a point when you’ll feel like using one.
Translucent Sturgeon
Description:
The simple clockwork mechanisms of life laid bare as a tenuous, skeletal existence.
Comment: And not only that, but in such a gorgeously prismatic fashion! At least, if the art is suggesting what I think it may. I believe this sturgeon has made itself quite clear :].
How to catch: Cast or Trawl in oceanic territory around the Gale Cliffs, during the day.
Shattered Wreckfish
Encyclopedia #140
Aberrant form of wreckfish
Description:
A cracked husk of scaly plates sliding atop pulsing miscoloured flesh.
Comment: Peeling wonderfully, I see. A boiled egg of a fish, huh? At least what I can view are very pretty colors beginning their molt. It's not every day the fishmonger is brought wares capable of descaling themselves.
How to catch: A daytime, shallow-swimmer that can only be caught by rod. Living true to their name, they are best sought out directly above the many shipwrecks around the Gale Cliffs. Due to this, their harvesting spots are usually alongside dredging opputunities.
Bony Wreckfish
Encyclopedia #141
Aberrant form of wreckfish
Description:
Encased in bony protrusions and struggling to move its encumbered fins. Its gills are almost sealed shut by the growths.
Comment: Fascinatingly, it has fallen victim to an ailment almost exactly opposite of what has happened to the previous fish.
How to catch: ^^^

So I've got questions about your oc, Juliet Dredge... Which of the islands is her favorite? Which is her least favorite? If she was an NPC in the game, what would her questline be like? What rewards would she give out? Would there be a special monster connected to her somehow?
Ooooh so many question!
She likes fishing near the Gale cliffs and the Marrows are home. She’s also quite fond of the Stellar Basin. The sky is so pretty (no one knows she likes it).
She hates Twisted Strand. Too many mosquitos. Swamp/10 wouldn’t recommend.
As for a questline: she’s doesn’t like asking for help but it would probably involve discovering some mysteries about the cultist people and aberration items. She thinks they’re…interesting.
She doesn’t have that much money but would probably offer some random items she dredged up. Maybe a book about the horrors. Or a zippo lighter (it’s broken).
No special monster but she has a bit of a fixation for Bloodskin sharks. She doesn’t like them. Or maybe she does. It’s hard to tell really.
