Small reorganisation. The Star Darlings rainbow is one of my fave projects (it's the first time they've all been united and aligned) and the Liccas (and Anlily) were stuck at the back of a shelf. Need to find them some shorts or longer skirts poor gals.

Not even going to try to photograph all of the dolls today, but I did start!
Thanks to @floccentric for sending the brunette version of this head, and the 1987 Skipper body I put it on--I did have another of the MMPR bodies* the blond is using, but it just didn't seem to suit the brunette head.  I adapted the Skipper neck to the spherical neck cavity with a large blob of hot glue.
* I used to think the MMPR body was a knock off early gen Licca body with a spherical neck knob, but I once saw a picture of another 1970s doll with the exact body and I absolutely cannot remember what it was...  I mean, that doesn’t mean it’s not a knock off Licca, more that it wasn't created specifically for the MMPR gals.

(answer anon please) could you explain moe and maybe kawaii if you wouldn’t mind? have heard a lot said about it but not from an actual jpn speaker perspective.
Well, kawaii and moe is more of a cultural question than one to do with the language itself.
The beginning of ‘kawaii’ is often said to have begun in the 1970s with female Japanese high school students who were using mechanical pencils to write in a style that was rounded and “cutesy”, with hearts and emoticons / smiley faces, and with very fine, even lines - something that wasn’t possible with traditional brush pens used for Japanese calligraphy.
However, I think some of it dates back even further.
During the Edo period, it was common for people to carry around netsuke, which were fastener-sculptures used to close bags attached to the obi (belt of the kimono). These were often decorated like animals, mythical creatures, people, folk story characters, deities and so on.  So collecting small cute animals and/or having mascots and charms of favourite characters to decorate your personal belongings with was considered a normal and common thing.
Also take into consideration that there was the heavy influence of Disney cartoons on early anime in the 60s, particularly Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, where characters were often drawn with very neotenous features such as large head, small nose, chubby cheeks and wide eyes.
So when companies like Sanrio came out with Hello Kitty in the mid 70s, it was an instant success because the appeal of kawaii was already there.
The same is true of Licca-chan dolls which debuted in the late 60s  - Barbie was not popular in Japan because she wasn’t considered ‘kawaii’ as she was based on an adult woman rather than having neotenous features of a little girl like Licca-chan does. She was originally designed by shoujo manga artist Miyako Maki.
Tumblr media
Takara Tomy, who licensed from Mattel in the early 80s, actually changed the design of Barbie for Japanese audiences for this reason, and eventually renamed her Jenny, though she was never as popular as Licca-chan.
Tumblr media
So I think that kawaii culture came about due to influence from popular early animation in Japan evoking that sense of cuteness, combined with the common pastime of collecting netsuke figurines which were often based around popular characters and cute animals (which led to the appeal of things like gachapon and Pokemon). Cuteness had replaced ‘beauty’ and ‘refinement’ as the ideal by the 60s. It gained popularity in the 70s with female school students new writing styles, the appearance of mascot characters like Hello Kitty, shoujo manga, and idol groups.
I think ‘moe’ was simply a continuation of this trend. Moe, meaning to bud or sprout, also relates to evoking this feeling of cuteness, though I find its origins tend to be more in male-oriented media such as bishoujo and gal games from the 80s and 90s, often with some kind of sex appeal (though more ‘pure’ or romantic love than lustful). Its origin is said to be from male 2ch users referring to female characters that they feel the need to ‘protect’. Some say that the naming comes from a specific character, such as Hotaru Tomoe or Moe Sagisawa, but those are just popular theories. Moe gained mainstream appeal when visual novel bishoujo and eroge games like Clannad and Air started getting anime adaptions, so in the early 00s, where romantic stories were being written not just for women, but for male-audiences as well.
Tumblr media
Moe is also evoked from shows like Azumanga Daioh, K-on! and Lucky Star, featuring a large female cast of cute characters and slice of life scenarios, which, while they aren’t romantic in nature like the visual novels described about in the previous paragraph, still has the male audience wanting to “protect” these cute female characters.
In terms of shows that tend to be called ‘moe for women’, I think it’s referring to something that may evoke a feeling of being attracted to a handsome or cute male character, but also wanting to protect them - something that is usually considered the ‘male’ thing to do. So that’s why you have a lot of women saying  “my son” about a male character they want to protect, as in our culture if a woman wants to protect a man, it must only be because she’s his mother, whereas if a man wants to protect a woman, it’s considered ‘normal’ or acceptable if he sees that person as a romantic partner. So it’s a bit of a double-standard, but there you go.

Japanese Artists Get Fierce with "Wonder Woman" Tribute Art
Wonder Woman is still yet to premiere in Japan, but fans are already in love with Gal Gadot's take on the DC superhero. So much so that an exhibit of new art featuring Diana is set to premiere later this month. And some big-name artists -- and a childhood icon -- are getting in on the action.
Vintage fashion doll Licca, a family favorite celebrating her 50th anniversary this month, is decked out in the new film version of Wonder Woman's costume. The team behind Licca wanted to make sure her look was both "beautiful and cool," just like Diana, and are excited that their creation gets to wear the costume for the first time ever.
More artwork has been teased from (from L to R) Akemi Takada (Creamy Mami, Patlabor), Shingo Adachi (Sword Art Online), and Sushio (Kill la Kill). These pieces will be on display starting July 28 at Lumine Est Shinjuku.
Wonder Woman opens in Japan August 25.

I have 4 dolls from 70s Takara Chibikko Chi-chan that in my collection canon are preschoolers too.

Tipped out the intimidating “to photograph and list” box (licca kiwi and klurhn will be “just pay postage”) and you can sort of see the phases of hair use:
The dark blues then leftover blues, cursèd green phase, the two fire gradient gals, the shiny pink nylon swapped from the Bratz commission, the lilac HRnylon from Aliexpress, the glow in the dark turquoise nylon from Retrodolls and test head for the glitter décoden.
Tumblr media
WIP: licca pink gradient’s parting is a mess, dracubecca got glow in the dark highlights but needs frozen white filler, as does skipper half-brows with mauve accents, lycca ruby needs half a parting, madison’s head was cracking so it’s been reinforced, asian curvy needs parts replacing with green but i’m still undecided on her hairdo.
Tumblr media
I had given her black irises but rookie mistake: used felt tip pen sealed in with acrylic gloss. This is not the same formulation as sharpie and the whole thing melted and stained her face, then when I bleached the stains, the paint went too. I can fix it but it’s going to be an intense effort. one more for the personal projects file. Oh by the way, in a strange twist, her name is Iris (after the flower).

After the commission work was completed, I got Licca Sakura brunette back off the shelf added some super glue to the tear and held it for two minutes, and again... it just would not hold. I examined her closer and there was a second tear right next to the one that extends down to her forehead: trying to close up the main tear was impossible as the head is so deformed by the other rooting mess so I cut all the megaplugs and am trying to salvage what I can by reshaping the head; if all goes well she’ll have a modern rooting pattern and a side parting. IF.
Finished *Blue Brocade’s reroot in gothic purple but she needs different eye highlights because what works with green does not work with purple) and a touchup to her lip. *part of a pack of 5 bald doll heads from samltd bought so I could do my “Chandra” with Honey’s afro hair. That batch yielded 2 Chandra green afros (one with just teal, mine with teal and aqua), Bessie (gradient asha), Desiree Fire (90% complete) and this gal.
Using the 12g of nylon I swapped for pink gin saran in the commission (the doll turned out to be originally rooted in saran so nylon streaks would have styled differently) I started a new pink shimmery Licca (running on the annoyance from Sakura and the wait while she glues LMAO) if I run out of hair -and probably will- there’s some glow in the dark pale blue in the post to do streaks. I still don’t like working with nylon but if you’re looking for a pink that reads more magical girl shimmer than real pink hair then nylon or kiwi is what you’re looking for. I’ll have Licca Pink kiwi fibre and Licca Pinku gradient saran fibre finished to compare and contrast next week. Notice the difference in size between the Licca k28 and Sakura heads?
I dug out Licca Nitrolime to assess whether I can fix her. Eye dots: yes, Eye colour: yes, Freckles to hide the grey dot on her nose bridge: yes but her lashes and brows are khaki: that tinyness is beyond my skillset. Maybe if I was weller but nah I just don’t have the range dahling. She’s available to dollblr for $5 which covers the hair cost. (+$6 for tracked shipping, happy to combine with just pay postage stuff, wigs, heads etc...)

brain jambalaya
I’m not going to be eating chicken unless I cooked it myself for a while, my duff immune system combined with no gallbladder means that it’s not acid enough in my stomach for certain bacteria (I’m looking at you Clostridium Perfringens aka the sulphur spray) that normal people kill with bile or fight off without getting violently ill. Switching to fish instead.
Anyway post 24h+ of THAT. I have a massive dehydration/exhaustion headache that won’t quit and the general sense of being overwhelmed by, I dunno, everything. I can’t even make a choice to listen to a podcast or watch some comfort TV. Which is probably my brain’s way of screaming “take a nap so we can run defrag and optimize”.
I’ve got three commission requests ongoing right now and only one seems like it’ll pan out (the glitter flocking). Sometimes it’s hard to tell if people are window shopping or not, especially if they didn’t bother to fully read through my commissions page. I have a couple of old regulars who alert me that there’s a commission by a “you have received money” paypal with instructions and lo and behold the next day or so there’s a doll head in my mailbox. *shrug* I like that, it’s cool it means they checked my commissions page to see if I had anything ongoing or not so it’s on me if I’m knee deep in something else and forgot to write it up. LOL.
Need to collate my thoughts as I wrote them down in 4 different places, from paper memos to txt to notes to a spreadsheet somewhere. doll projects mixed with medication adjustments mixed with other household stuff.
The 3 Liccas who went through bleachment but have faint pale orange marks are called Freckle, Beauty spot and Trep (as in trepanation - she has a slight hole in her head). D-Elle (damaged lashes) is going in the just pay postage. That’s Lycca goth, Mermaid, Fire and Fairy Kei ready and the 4 remaining will get names if and when they get hair.
The glue heads stayed a day or two too long in the ethoxylated sauce and depending on the type: their glue got atomized (will probs post explanatory photos later). Clawdia’s in excellent shape but Frankie, Cleo and wonky Raven couldn’t keep their hair so I salvaged the hair for the JPP box and the bald heads for potential reroots... and everybody need to be photographed, added to the spreadsheet and put in the correct drawer. also need to peel/scrape off the decoden tests as they were done in extreme haste and not much care though I might try and save the blue gal, she’s a bit messy in back but nice in front.
But now, nap time. <3
