I'm thinking about Tails Adventure so I'm gonna make a list of things I would personally change and update if I knew how to code and could make a fanmade remake of it.
Quick disclaimer before I write out my ideas: I do really like the original Tails Adventure so I’m not saying it’s a terrible game or anything. It’s not perfect but it’s still very enjoyable and has so much potential imo!
1. Adjust the story to make it more intriguing. First off I'd make the scenario of the game be that Tails crash lands on Cocoa Island. Since the Emeralds are in the game I’d make the opening cut scene be Tails searching for the other Emeralds in his plane. He has one of the Emeralds already and he’s using it to power his plane and search for the others via a signal when something goes wrong and he ends up crash landing on the island. As he gets out of the wreckage of his plane he notices the Emerald a little ways away on the ground. Speedy happens to be there and takes it and Tails sees this and chases after him. This then leads Tails into the first level of the game with the initial goal of fixing his plane and getting home. His workshop could then be an abandoned home that he makes his temporary living space while he finds what he needs to fix his plane, similar to Pikmin’s story scenario. At the end of each area is an object or material that will help him fix his plane, and each boss fight gives him an Emerald to power the plane (and also the submarine later). At first Tails isn’t sure what’s going on with the Battle Bird Armada so he's only trying to rebuild his plane. Eventually he realizes he needs to stop the Battle Bird Armada which leads him to fighting them. I think this makes more sense for his character as he realizes at some point without Sonic around he has no choice but to stop the Armada himself. It’s reminiscent of Sonic Adventure in which you can tell he's afraid to fight the Egg Walker but fights Eggman anyway because he knows he needs to fight back to protect the people of Station Square.
2. Add dialogue so the other characters get fleshed out more and their motives are clear. The Battle Bird Armada have some of the Emeralds in the original game so it’s definitely important to explain why they might need them for what their planning. Also add more boss fights and characters like the Battle Bird Armada’s commanders or something.
3. Update the gameplay to an extent. Ignoring critics who complain the game isn’t fast (it’s a Tails game not a regular Sonic game, SEGA should be allowed to try different gameplay styles with their other characters) I like the Metroidvania style but the game needs tweaks to really make it immersive and balanced (discussed more in my next point). I think it be cool if they also added some minor RPG elements. What I'm thinking is that during levels you could interact with certain objects and a dialogue box comes up in which Tails gives information about the object, such as plants or even clues to where certain gadgets are hidden in the stage (this would fix issues with backtracking and players wouldn’t need to look at a guide to find gadgets). It also be cool if the game had extra secret gadgets that required finding and collecting materials. Theses gadgets shouldn’t be required to complete the game though.
4. Make the game easier to access for newcomers. This would mean balancing a few areas and levels, but especially the first level which in my experience is one of the hardest levels in the game because Tails has no gadgets to work with yet.
5. Make the level aesthetics/level design more interesting. Cocoa Island had a lot of potential to have more levels and different areas to explore instead of mostly forest. There could be a water cave area with crystals or since its called Cocoa island an area with Cacao trees. There could also be more tropical inspired areas as well.
6. Add more music and remixes of some of the older songs. The songs in the original aren't bad I'd just like more tone variation.
7. Update the sprite art possibly making it similar to Sonic Mania. The sprite art in the original isn't bad, but naturally if it was remade it could be updated. I'd keep it as a sprite game though. Sprite art is charming and would still work for a Metroidvania styled game.
I haven’t played the game in a year so, but these are a few ideas I have off the top of my head that I thought I’d share, especially with a recent 3D Tails Adventure fan game in the works. The 3D game sounds ambitious... I’m concerned it won’t get anywhere though. All I really want is a remake, not an entirely new 3D game necessarily. These are my ideas and it’s totally fine if you disagree with some of these, honestly at this point I’d be happy with anything similar for Tails that’s fun to play.

sonic boom but i insert a bunch of other characters in it. bonus gay
mighty and ray - sonic’s childhood friend, mighty, moves to bygone island alongside his adopted brother ray. the two join team sonic, though it seems like mighty doesn’t just see sonic as a pal
bean - bean helps eggman out with some Crime Shit, but leaves his side towards the end since he thinks the guy’s too bossy
bark - when the colder regions of bygone island starts to become strangely warmer, he sets out to figure out the issue. its eggman’s machine fucking around with nature, which leads to bark angrily destroying the thing. bean is amused by this and think hes “cool and interesting”, so the two become friends. episode is usually pretty silent bc he doesnt talk here
fang and also rouge - both of them discover the chaos crystals and try to steal it from one another, only for team sonic to take them and place them in a safer area
witchcarters - wendy places various curses around bygone island, and with tails going unaffected by it, its up to him to stop her and her cronies
battle kukku - the kukkus attempt to claim bygone island for themselves, but eggman won’t let them have it. meanwhile, tails has a bit of rivalry with the son of their leader and the owl guy with the weird name wants to one up eggy
honey - amy buys a new dress (which resembles modern amy’s dress, but longer), leading to honey growing in popularity among the citizens. she thanks amy and starts to generously gift her...to rather severe degrees. she eventually tones it down and the two become friends
tiara (i know shes cut but idc) - tiara and her dad visit bygone island out of curiosity towards the chaos crystals, though it becomes difficult as the safe haven for them has tight security
gamma and omega - both were built by eggman (and also are technically in the same series in this? idk boom’s an au it doesnt matter) and later betray him after seeing the good in nature. they meet the cubots and adjust to their new lives
vanilla, cream, and cheese - all three try to find ways to defeat eggman and other villains without using much violence and instead peace. but in the end, they learn that sometimes conflicts have to have disagreeable endings
espio and charmy - espio’s clan disbands, so he searches for a new one-only to find himself caring for an orphaned bee
tikal and the whole echidna tribe tbh - team sonic take a trip to angel island after knuckles gets really nostalgic over it, only to be shocked upon seeing echidnas living there
chaos - one of wendy’s spells still prevail, and manages to spread onto angel island. this spell gives water life, and things quickly go off the rails due to chaos’ inconsistent form changes
maria and gerald - eggman’s relatives find him, and are extremely disappointed by his choices in life. since gerald inspired him when he was young, they send him and hope he can knock some sense into the guy. meanwhile, maria (who’s adopted which is why shes still young in this) meets a mysterious black and red hedgehog
emerl - cream befriends one of tails’ new creations. things go haywire, but he’s rebuilt into gmerl afterwards since cream got horribly upset over the gizoid’s betrayal
silver - while testing his time travel skills, he finds himself stuck in the past, leading team sonic to teach him everything
blaze - a faraway kingdom messages team sonic. they request help, as they have been taken over by the battle kukku. when they arrive, the king and queen are missing, so they team up with their daughter (obviously blaze) in order to defeat battle kukku again (note: stories of team sonic have been told by travelers going from one place to another)
marine - while making sure that the kingdom’s at safety, blaze meets a raccoon that immediately attaches to her, as she’s her biggest fan. she isn’t fond of her at first, but when sonic tells blaze the story of how he met tails, she realizes marine isn’t much different from tails back then and decides to take her under her wing
mephiles - shadow comes across a scepter that unleashes a silhouette that copies his appearance. said silhouette turns into an actual hedgehog, and follows him around endlessly
elise - a human mysteriously washes ashore on bygone island, with only the memory of heat and sun. she doesn’t seem to know the existence of mobians either, so team sonic n friends have to help her adjust and discover her memories (also why does she got fire powers) (theres probably an ep featuring both mephiles and elise figuring out theyre both connected somehow)
the babylon rogues - a team of skateboarders challenge sonic to a contest, so their leader can prove that hes better than him. except theres no skating rink at bygone island so they have to struggle through the process of getting one
chip - sonic comes across a fairy, who immediately latches onto him. since chip is the type of fairy that “becomes attached to the person that first sees/rescues them”, sonic can’t really get rid of him and instead just has to go with it. the two are pals by the end
the wisps - honestly colors in itself could be a multipart boom ep, so imagine that game but with team sonic + amy, sticks, mighty, ray, and chip
the deadly six - team sonic discovers a magical conch, and upon blowing it, they gain the attention of some weird creatures. as it turns out, they somehow landed on bygone island and have to return to their home planet; lost hex
infinite and the jackal squad - a new punk squad starts causing a ruckus in bygone island, which eventually leads to a takeover. shadow finally starts taking maria’s advice and helps out with pushing them back down, though they end up joining eggman’s side
gadget - sonic gets a new big fan. hes weary at first, but learns that gadget isn’t as obsessive as the last one and that big fans don’t automatically mean they are creepy. its wholesome
extra
nazo - when tiara experiments with the chaos crystals, she accidentally summons a mysterious hedgehog
sonia and manic - sonic’s siblings hurriedly bust into sonic’s shack, much to his confusion, until they tell him news that all three have been awaiting for years
ashura - a sonic lookalike prides himself as sonic’s biggest rival, even though sonic has NEVER met him

Truth Telling--Some Sonic Forces Fic
[for @neil-degrasse-china, probably best if you read their “Scarf” piece first, for context]
[[Gadget has to tell Knuckles, the leader of the resistance, that he knows Infinite, knows him, perhaps, too well, and it’s the most terrifying thing he’s ever done.]]
Truth Telling
Here’s the thing, the thing he doesn’t want to tell but he’ll have to: that scarf was once his, and the neck, the person attached to that neck, had also once been his.
Infinite wasn’t his name, but he doesn’t remember what it was regardless. Maybe it’s the effects of the gem—that radiating, pulsing, evil thing shoved into his friend’s chest, probably never to be removed, only destroyed from the inside out somehow; he knows how this will go already, and he doesn’t know if he’s strong enough to pull pre-Infinite out of this new person in the old body—maybe it’s the effects of the gem, but he can’t remember any identifying specifics of the person before, not the same way he can see the eyes, staring at him from the darkness, the bed for two, feel the hand clutching him, shaking with nightmares, the smile— It’s all so easy, but the words to go with it?
It’s like they never existed.
Here’s the other thing: he’s very, very, very intimidated by Knuckles. And Tails. And Amy. He’s heard the stories, seen the headlines, (collected the action figures), followed the comics, read the unofficial biographies. He knows what Knuckles is capable of, knows how highly he thinks of himself, knows how suspicious he is of everyone he doesn’t know well, knows that he’s searching for Sonic just as desperately as Tails, as Amy, as the Chaotix, even though he’s locked into leading, can’t go looking himself, knows that he doesn’t trust the young, alternate dimension version of Sonic that appeared along with the Ruby as far as he can throw him (and that’s. That’s far. Resistance baseball for morale: only person who could hit Knuckles’s hard fastball was Amy, with her hammer), keeps that Sonic at an arm’s length so he can watch him; he knows all this, and he’s terrified.
He absolutely, desperately, doesn’t want to tell Knuckles that he knows Infinite (he more than knows him, and Chaos that spearheads right past awkward all the way to mortifying and compromising), but he also knows he has to. His knowledge of Infinite, of his (perhaps now non-existent) weaknesses, his habits, his past, is invaluable, and it belongs to the resistance, to Knuckles. There’s a bigger world out there beyond his own angst, his own morbid, slow realizations, his own shame, a bigger cause. The planet is almost completely over-run with robots, Eggman’s disgusting fingers of smog, pollution, and death are almost spread over everything, and they only clutch harder as they become more powerful. Infinite is a lynchpin in that, the very tendons that grasp the hold tighter, so it’s his duty to say something.
But first, Gadget, has to convince himself that it’s all real.
--
Silver is an enigma. Gadget doesn’t know who he is, where he’s from, what he wants, but Knuckles knows him, seems to trust him, so, when Silver says, “I knew it,” after Gadget tells them, Gadget has to work very hard not to sputter and demand how, why, what.
But still, he says, “I knew it,” with such conviction. Knuckles nods, sagely, calm, not at all what Gadget expected.
(A note: Gadget just said, “I knew Infinite, before all this.”
Gadget said, “I knew Infinite... intimately...”
Amy said, “Oooooh.” Not like a school girl, but with all the sympathy and chagrin of a grown woman.
Tails hissed and immediately fell on his tablet, typing up a storm, probably trying to connect the dots.
Silver said... “I knew it.”)
Gadget doesn’t know what to do at this juncture. They’re all looking at him, him and his raw past, spread out for them to see, carved right out of his chest and offered up, here, do what you will. The heroes of his past (and Silver), watching him, trying to gauge him. He can feel pressure building somewhere in the back of his head, and he’s not sure if it’s going to turn into tears or something else but he very much doesn’t want to find out.
Eventually, Tails says, “Yep,” and spins the tablet around. There, plain as day, is a picture of old—Gadget with his arm slung over Infinite’s shoulder. Behind them, carnival lights, spinning rides and junk food stands. “When was this?” Tails asks, and distantly Gadget wonders why Tails isn’t second-in-command. He’s far more capable than—
“Two years,” he croaks, instead of finishing his own thought. “South Island’s June festival.”
“Sonic’s birthday,” Tails mumbles as he casts a long look toward the smaller version of Sonic, huddled in a corner with his hands over his ears. He has flashbacks sometimes, to the space between dimensions, and it’s better to just let him sit there and sort out the stimulus; it’s like a computer restarting—reality blends for him for a bit, but eventually he gets it. “We were there that year,” Tails continues.
Gadget knew that, somewhere in the back of his head. He’d seen flashes of Sonic in the crowd, and Infinite hadn’t been impressed, as always. He wasn’t a big fan of Sonic’s, but he appreciated what he did, for the island, for the planet. (Gadget has memories of that first attack, South Island alive with robots, when he was tiny, so tiny tiny, huddling with his best friend in the back room. Explosions everywhere, grinding gears, then— Nothing. Whispers later, Sonic, from Green Hill, only a child. His most vivid memory though: Infinite’s hand on his back, rubbing soothing circles as he watched the windows, the smoke in the sky.) They didn’t see Sonic that day (or back then), but it’d been comforting, knowing he was there.
“What’s his name?” Tails asks as he taps Infinite’s face, half obscured by his old scarf, the one he wore before Gadget got him a new one.
“I don’t know.” Gadget hears his own voice, loud and clear in his ears, but the omission doesn’t sound right. He should know this. He should—
“The Ruby’s doing.” Tails sighs and turns the tablet back around, scrolls through some more pictures. “He looks normal. No homicide, huh?”
“He’s a college student,” Gadget croaks.
A long pause, and Knuckles finally speaks: “This changes nothing.”
And it’s that simple. Silver looks up from where he was picking at a loose thread in one of his gloves, and he finally speaks. “I should’ve realized. The records never said anything about this, but I read a few letters before I came...”
Gadget can’t make sense of that, the past tense, as if what they’re doing know is already lost to the annals of time. Maybe that’s why Silver feels so weird, so insubstantial, why he doesn’t touch anything, doesn’t want to leave a trace. But that’s—
Well, that’s not as farfetched as the most important person in Gadget’s past turning to evil, is it?
(And yes, his hand still aches. He still desperately wants to yank that gem out of him, but that would be too easy.)
