Zoo Miami

Homestead Bayfront Park

Homestead Bayfront Park is a waterfront park and marina located in Homestead, Florida. The park features many amenities including a fishing pier, boat ramp, playground and picnic areas. The park also includes Homestead Harbor Light that was first lit on January 1, 1887 by the United States Lighthouse Board. The light is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1935 when it was replaced by an automated beacon on top of the nearby Homestead Lighthouse tower which remains active today.

Coral Gables (The Biltmore Hotel)

A historic hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. The Biltmore Hotel is a member of the Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Biltmore Hotel has been restored to its former glory and is one of the most luxurious hotels in Miami, Florida. It was built by Henry M. Flagler who developed Coral Gables and made it into a resort community during his lifetime (1850-1913). He developed two railroad lines from Jacksonville to Key West, one via West Palm Beach on land he purchased from John D. Rockefeller Jr., another through the Ten Thousand Islands area using boats that were launched from South Miami Beach.

He designed this hotel as well as many others that he built along his rail line.

The building was designed by architect Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Its interior features murals by Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) depicting scenes from Norse mythology as well as murals created by other artists such as John Sloan (1871-1951), Robert Blum (1883-1959), Maurice Prendergast (1859-1920) and William Glackens (1870 - 1938)

After Tartaglia's confession, you spent the next few weeks together. On slow days and days off, Tartaglia would take you all over Liyue, from Mt. Tianheng to Qingce Village. He would take you to see the most incredible places during the day, telling you stories about how he'd found the place or retelling what he remembered about what Zhongli said. Every now and then as you were marveling at the views Tartaglia would sneak in a comment.

"If you love seeing new places you should come to Snezhnaya."

"This lake is beautiful. You know in Snezhnaya when it gets cold enough we skate on the lakes. I'll teach you when you come to visit."

"The view is lovely. You'll love the views of Snezhnaya in the winter. When everything is frozen, covered in snow and ice the trees sparkle and gleam. It's incredible."

At night, you would often eat in Liyue Harbor. Tartaglia liked to take you to the most renowned restaurants in Liyue: Luili Pavilion, Xinyue Kiosk, and Wanmin Restaurant were common. He always insisted on paying stating that it was his treat. While you had tried to protest and at least split the bill, you were never successful and he would often swipe the bill when you were distracted. The one time you had managed to pay he brought you flowers for a week saying it was to make up for dinner.

On the days when he was busy with work, you would travel around with Anya and sometimes Zhongli. It was on one of these days that you were having dinner with Anya at a restaurant that Zhongli had recommended called Third-Round Knockout. It was a tavern located in Chihu Rock just across the bridge into Liyue Harbor. Third-Round Knockout was located in a fairly large building with outdoor seating. The building had multiple eaves and gables and green tile roofing. Zhongli had recommended it particularly because of the storyteller Iron Tongue Tian, but you and Anya were excited about the reasonable price for a good meal. Sitting at a table outside, you were telling Anya about an adventure with Tartaglia to Minlin to collect Qingxin flowers. As there was a lull in the conversation Anya spoke up.

"You really do like him don't you?" She gave you a look that said she could read you like a book.

You nodded with a soft smile not even trying to deny it. "I do."

Anya gave a wry smile "He's at least treating you well. After all, how many times has he taken you to Luili Pavilion and Xinyue Kiosk?" She said playfully teasing you.

"Anya!" You rolled your eyes at your friend as she giggled.

"But in all seriousness, Have you spoken with him about what happens when you leave? We're getting back on a boat in two days." Anya raised a good point.

Your smile dropped. Two days? Was it that soon? Honestly, you had lost track of time. Which meant you hadn't even told Tartaglia how soon you were leaving, let alone discussed what would happen when you did. Anya could read your thoughts on your face.

"Oh Archons. You haven't talked with him yet have you?" She questioned already knowing the answer.

Biting your lip, you nodded solemnly. "I... hadn't even thought about it myself..." You needed to speak with Tartaglia. Anya brought her cup carefully to her lips and took a sip of her tea before replying.

"Well, are you seeing him tomorrow? If not, you'd better find him, unless you want him to think you've disappeared." Anya was right.

Tomorrow you will find time to speak with Tartaglia. He needed to know and you needed to come up with a plan if you didn't want this budding relationship to come to an abrupt conclusion.

The next day you were standing in Northland Bank hoping to find Tartaglia. Suddenly, two fatui soldiers stopped in front of you. One of them elbowed the other and frantically gestured to you.

"Oh you're Lord Tartaglia's lover!" A voice called out to you.

Your head shot up to look at the two men who you soon recognized as the soldiers you spoke with when you returned Tartaglia's jacket. They both bowed in greeting.

"Are you here to see Lord Tartaglia? Unfortunately he's not here right now, but we can inform him that you're looking for him." The man on the right in the red uniform said, offering a smile.

You smiled at the two men as you replied. "Thank you. I'll wait for him here."

The two soldiers left you with a wave. You waited for another few hours before a pair a black boots stopped in front of you.

"Ah so you really did wait here. Two of my subordinates came to find me and told me you were waiting here for me." Tartaglia smiled down at you. "How about we head to Luili Pavilion for dinner? My treat since you were so kind as to wait for me."

The walk to Luili Pavilion was short but you were filled with dread knowing that you were about to inform Tartaglia that you were leaving in less than twelve hours. You kept going over phases in your head trying to pick out the best way to start the conversation and break the news to him. But everything you come up with just felt wrong. Worse it seemed Tartaglia was starting to pick up on how quiet you were being. As the two of you sat down, he gave you a serious look.

"What's wrong? You're remarkably quiet today." His tone was filled with concern and a hint of dread.

You sighed deeply. "We... need to talk..." Your words trailed off again as you struggled to find what you wanted to say.

The look on Tartaglia's face hardened as he looked away from you.

"You don't want to see me anymore." His tone was self deprecating and full of dejection. You jumped at that conclusion immediately trying to rectify the misunderstanding and assuage his fears.

"No! That's not it at all!" Your outburst drew looks from the patrons around you. You cleared your throat before continuing.

"I don't want to leave you.... But I have to return to Sumeru... tomorrow." You barely got the words out. It felt like your chest was constructing and suffocating you as you waited for his reply.

Tartaglia's eyes widened in both shock and understanding. "You're leaving tomorrow..." He sounded like he almost couldn't believe it.

"Yes. I meant to talk to you sooner, but I lost track of time. I was having so much fun, I didn't even think about leaving. I want to keep seeing you. I really like you." You cut your rambling off as you watched Tartaglia lean his face on his hand smiling at you. He reached his other hand out to hold yours, running his thumb over your knuckles in a soothing manner.

"I'll find a way."

He didn't elaborate any further, but he spoke with such conviction that you naturally found yourself trusting him. For the rest of dinner, you both spoke as if nothing was going to change until Tartaglia walked you back to your inn for the final time.

You didn't want to part from him. Your affections for the Harbinger had only developed further the more time you spent with him. You had slowly grown to love this man that you had risked your life to save just a few months ago. So when he stopped in front of the inn to wish you good night you couldn't contain yourself. You threw your arms around his shoulders and held him close. Tartaglia slowly returned your embrace, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you closer. You rested your head in the crook of his neck. No words needed to be said for you two to understand one another. Both of you stood silently, just enjoying the feeling of being in one another's arms under the stars and lantern lights of Liyue Harbor.

The boat back was leaving at the crack of dawn so you would not have time to find Tartaglia again before departing from Liyue. And even if you had time it's not like he was going to be hanging around Northland Bank at all hours with nothing better to do. You and Anya had brought your trunks to the docks to be loaded onto the ship. Anya glanced back at you and one look told her everything.

"Sad to be leaving? It's written all over your face. You miss him already don't you?" There was no teasing in her voice, just the earnest remarks of a caring friend.

You gave a solemn sigh, forcing a smile then nodding softly.

"Hey, maybe he'll come to the docks to see you off." Anya's attempts to cheer you up were appreciated but not quite helping.

As the captain gave the signal to board, you could hear the creeping of heavy footsteps running on the wooden floor boards of the docks.

"Wait!"

You knew that voice. You turned just in time to see Tartaglia before he pulled you into his chest.

"Don't go. We can petition the Akademiya to have you stay here and continue your work. I-I can get you accommodations here, you wouldn't have to leave." You looked up to see Tartaglia's eyes pleading with you.

He continued. "I have some time off coming up. I was planning to go home to Morepesok, you can come with me. You'll get to meet my parents and siblings. They'd love to meet you. I know they'll adore you!" You could feel Tartaglia's grip tighten as you considered his offer.

"I know it's a lot to ask. But.." He locked eyes with you pausing for a moment. Tension was rising as you waited with baited breath for his next words.

"I love you. I love you so much and I don't want you to go."

And you loved him. You didn't even stop to think. Without a moment of hesitation, you brought your lips to meet his. The kiss was soft but full of your feelings. Tartaglia froze for a moment before his hand came up to the back of your head and tangled in your hair deepening your kiss. You pulled apart slowly and Tartaglia beamed with pleasure.

"Does this mean you'll consider staying?" His words were filled with a level of hope that scarce allowed himself. Your lips parted to speak but you were cut off before you had the chance to reply.

"I'm going back. I'll help petition the Akademiya and inform them that you've chosen to stay here to continue with your research." Both of you whipped your heads to Anya at her offer. You were quite startled.

"You mean... you'll help us?" You ask ready to squeeze your friend to death.

Anya crossed her arms and gave you a knowing smirk.

"If you came back with me now you'd be nothing but miserable. And while I don't particularly like the Fatui, it's clear that he strongly cares for you and that you return his feelings with full force. I'm not heartless enough to ruin my best friend's happiness due to my grievances. However..." Anya turned to Tartaglia. "If you hurt her, I will come down on you with all the force of a Snezhnayan blizzard. Understand?" Her words were as frosty as the glare she held.

But Tartaglia just nodded and happily grinned. "I promise I'll take good care of her and keep her away from Snezhnaya's darker sides." And his promise was worth everything.

Anya gave a single nod. "You'd better." If looks could kill, Anya's glares could take out an entire army. She turned to the stevedore and requested that your trunk be unloaded. Soon the ship was off with one less passenger. You and Tartaglia waved to Anya as the ship embarked on its journey to Sumeru.

The trip to Sumeru had been calm except for Anya's swirling thoughts. She knew it was the right decision for you to stay in Liyue, but how would she explain to everyone else that she'd left you in Liyue in the care of a Fatui Harbinger? A Harbinger who was now your lover. Everyone would lose it! Especially Jean-Pierre. Anya had her suspicions that Jean-Pierre's feelings for you were a bit stronger than friendship. And the Fatui had practically ruined his family. If there was one person in the world who would take this news the worst, it would be him. Monika wouldn't be too pleased either. Mondstadt might have been political allies with the Fatui on paper, but Mondstadters despised the Fatui. Anya had no idea how she was going to explain the situation to them without them immediately getting on the next boat to Liyue in an attempt to bring you home.

As the ship docked in Port Ormos, Anya's fears began to manifest. Both Jean-Pierre and Monika were waiting at the docks for you. This would be fun. As Anya disembarked and approached the two Jean-Pierre was the first to speak.

"Where's Y/N?" He wasn't making any accusations yet but his tone wasn't happy go lucky either. Anya could sense herself begin to fidget with the strap of her satchel.

"S-she chose to stay in Liyue to continue her research." Anya's voice wavered slightly when faced with the onslaught of both of your friends.

Jean-Pierre's jaw dropped and Monika spoke up.

"You let her stay there alone?" Monika was not having it.

Anya fumbled for a good answer.

"She's not alone... you know the man she saved in Mondstadt? Turns out he works in Liyue." Anya knew that wouldn't placate them entirely but she hoped her words would settle them a little bit.

Jean-Pierre recovered but was quickly growing enraged. He and Anya never got on well at all.

"You mean you left her with some guy?!" He was practically fuming as he spit out his words.

Anya was also getting annoyed with him.

"He's not some guy. They're... close now. Besides, he's far more powerful than any of us. If anything he'd be able to protect her better than you could." Anya shot back, not being able to resist taking a dig at Jean-Pierre. Monika raised an eyebrow at Anya's words.

"A powerful man from Snezhnaya?"

The instant those words left Monika's mouth Anya knew she had messed up. Badly.

"Who exactly is this man?" Jean-Pierre seethed through gritted teeth.

Anya searched for an answer, any answer, as another researcher stepped off the boat.

"Oh are you talking about the Harbinger?" The offhand comment made by the other researcher who happened to witness the exchange sank any attempts Anya could make to defend you.

Everyone froze. Anya could feel the cold sweat running down her back. This was not good.

Jean-Pierre spoke up. "Harbinger?"

"Yes. I overheard and assumed you were talking about the other researcher that stayed in Liyue with the Eleventh Harbinger." The research replied completely oblivious to the growing tension. Anya had lost all colour in her face as Jean-Pierre and Monika took in this new information before turning heated glares to her.

"Did Y/N stay back in Liyue with a Fatui Harbinger?" Jean-Pierre's eyes were deadly cold.

"S-She saved his life. He's completely devoted to her. He won't harm her." Anya could sense that she was only digging a deeper hole.

"Devoted.... You said they were close... How close?" Monika had crossed her arm and while she was slightly calmer than Jean-Pierre, her jaw was clenched tightly.

"I-I—" Anya's words were quickly cut off by Jean-Pierre.

"Forget it. I'm going to Liyue and I'm bringing Y/N back. I'll kill that bastard if I have to." Jean-Pierre had started walking away with his statement.

"Wait! You can't just leave! You'd have to petition the board for permission!" Anya called after him in a desperate attempt to stop him. Jean-Pierre slowly turned his head to look over his shoulder at the two women. His eyes were steely and cold.

"Watch me."

With that he turned on his heel and was gone.

Medicare question - I know medicaid is limited to the state you’re in (couldn’t use WV medicaid to get prescriptions in TN) but is medicare state bound?

Generally speaking, no, Medicare isn’t state-bound - if you live in Trempealeau, Wisconsin but the doctor you want to see is over in Winona, Minnesota that border  isn’t going to be much of an issue since you’ll be under the same Medicare Administrative Contractor (CMS has a number of different companies they contract with to handle the medical claims and billing for Medicare services, and each company is given a specific geographic area they cover)

If you live in Lansing, Michigan but decide you want to be a snowbird and spend the winters in Coral Gables, Florida, that’s not going to prevent you from using your Medicare coverage, but you would need to designate one of them as your primary state of residence (where you vote, file taxes, have your license/ID, etc.) and find a doctor who accepts Medicare. You might have issues with your Medicare Supplement/Part C plan, or if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, because the states do differ there with benefits/coverages, premiums (this is probably the biggest thing), and enrollments. And with Medicare Advantage, they’re like any other private insurance so if you don’t use a doctor in your Advantage plan network, you foot the full bill. 

(Medicare Supplement is also called Medigap, and CMS requires those plans basically be identical and are national, so stuff should be the same there, for the most part, regardless of location. The difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement/Medigap is that Supplement/Medigap *only* covers/picks up whatever your primary Medicare doesn’t, while with Advantage you basically have an insurer administer/provide your Medicare, and maybe have some extra/additional benefits. One is an addition to your Medicare coverage, one basically replaces it.) 

Part D isn’t as much of a concern, because those are usually national or have big networks and lots of provider options as it is, although it depends on if you have Advantage or if you just have Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and maybe a Medicare Supplement/Medigap (Part C)

Chapter Thirteen 

Staying the Course

June 2015

Water lapped at the dock to Maggie’s right and the sound of it caused her to sigh in contentment. It was quiet and incredibly peaceful where she was presently and she could not have been happier.

Louise McGillan, a retired Navy nurse, was one of her oldest friends. She invited her to her lake house for a week, just the two of them. Maggie told her about Dana and Fox, and how she was helping Fox out. Louise said they both needed a girls’ week and insisted they leave as soon as possible.

Louise’s husband passed away a couple of months previously, after a very long illness. Since his death, she was dealing with a lot-bank accounts to close, her house to go through and get ready to sell, her husband’s will and items to be set aside for the recipients. It was a very stressful time for her and her two children. Maggie helped her whenever she could, offering advice, dropping off a meal, or simply lending a listening ear.

Tonight was the second night they were there and Louise went inside to get some wine. Maggie closed her eyes and listened to the sounds of the water and the crickets beginning to chirp. She took a deep breath and let it out, feeling the peace brought by this place.

“I hope red is good, apparently it’s all we had here,” Louise said, causing Maggie to open her eyes and look at her. She smiled as she handed her a glass and sat in the adirondack chair next to her. “Phew, it sure is beautiful here. The quiet is nice, but only for a while. Give me the bustle of the city any day.” They both laughed and sat looking at the lake.

They drank their wine in silence, as only good friends can, knowing that words are not always needed. It soon began to get chilly and they moved inside, pouring another glass of wine as they turned on the fireplace. Covering up with the cozy blankets in the room, they started getting caught up with each other.

Louise’s daughter was coming to visit next week, to help pack up the house and consolidate items before the big move. Louise found a townhouse close to her son and he and his wife recently had a new baby. Louise moving closer would be beneficial to both parties. She would be there to help care for her grandson, and her son would be close if she herself needed assistance.

“It will be nice to help with the baby, play with him, get the snuggles, then hand him back at the end of the day and get a good night’s sleep,” Louise said with a laugh. Maggie smiled, but then she thought of how she used to care for William and the way he smelled as she held him close, and she sighed.

She knew in her head that Dana’s decision to put William up for adoption had been the right one, but her heart broke for Dana. For all of them, really. The pain she saw in everyone close to Dana made her physically ill, and mentally as well. She had gone on medication for a while after William was gone, anxiety and sleeping pills, her heart broken.

Then Dana was gone. Her boys both had their own wives and lives, and Maggie was struggling through depression with no family to care for her. A knock at her door one day led to Louise coming in and cooking her a meal as Maggie sat at the kitchen table and cried. Cried for the sons she missed, the baby she would never see again, and for the safety of her daughter and the man she loved and followed, becoming a fugitive along with him.

Louise made sure she was fed, brought her to doctor’s appointments, and sat while she cried and worried. She never told Maggie to cheer up, move on, or to stop crying. No, she held her hand and wiped her eyes, keeping her sane and among the living.

“Maggie? You still with me?” Maggie heard Louise ask softly. Unbeknownst to her, Maggie had been crying. She shook her head and apologized to Louise.

“I had no idea I was crying. I’m so sorry,” she said, wiping at her eyes. “Louise, I’m truly sorry.”

“Maggie, we don’t apologize for our tears, remember?” Louise asked her, reaching for her hand and holding it tight. Maggie laughed breathily and nodded, squeezing Louise’s hand.

“Was it the mention of the baby?” Louise asked kindly and Maggie nodded. Louise nodded too and then was silent.

“He would be fourteen now,” Maggie said, exhaling and shaking her head. “The boys at his age ... they had been awful at times. I can’t imagine with technology and access to so much information, how William would be.” Louise nodded again and squeezed Maggie’s hand.

“Louise ... I’m sorry. This is not why we’re here ...”

“Maggie, this is precisely why we’re here. To mourn and take time for us. We have both been helping others ... god, most of our lives, and we need some time for ourselves,” Louise said vehemently. “I don’t expect this week to be sunshine and rainbows, not by a long shot. I’m mourning and so are you because time matters not when it comes to mourning and loss. Although it was the decision that was needed, you had a massive hole ripped into your soul. It’s been fourteen years, true, but it still hurts like it was yesterday at times. I know it does and I don’t expect you to hold back while you’re here. Not to be too cliche, but what happens at this lake house, goddamn stays at this lake house.”

Maggie laughed and leaned her head against Louise’s shoulder, her head then resting on Maggie’s. They both laughed until they could not breathe and then wiped their eyes. Silence fell in the room and then Louise spoke softly.

“I’m scared, Maggie,” she said, and Maggie could hear it in her voice. “I’m scared of what comes next. I’ve been busy and doing for so long, I’m afraid of what happens when I stop.”

“I know what you mean, Louise,” Maggie said, putting her other hand on top of Louise’s. “It’s tough at first, I’m not going to tell you it’s not, but it will get easier. Time, it’s the only thing that helps. Well, that and good friends.” They both laughed and again sat quietly.

“Selling the house, Maggie ...” she sighed. “I don’t really want to, but what will I do with it on my own? It’s too big and all I think of is John when I’m in there. How happy we were and then him passing as we stood around him, watching him leave this earth. Most of the memories right now are sad and I avoid certain rooms if I can. The new place is nice, but it doesn’t have the same feel as home.” She said with another sigh.

“That can be said of any place that’s different and new to us. I know that leaving the old house will be hard, but for your circumstances, it will be beneficial to all of you,” Maggie said.

“I know,” Louise said quietly.

They sat in silence until Louise sat up and shook her head, before standing to her feet and reaching for Maggie’s hands. She pulled her up from the couch and into a tight hug before pulling back and smiling at her. Maggie smiled back and held onto Louise’s hand for an extra second.

“Let’s go to bed, get up and have a glass of wine by the water as we watch the sun rise,” Louise said, picking up their wine glasses. Maggie laughed and said that sounded fabulous.

A few minutes later she was in the guest room bed trying to stop her racing mind. She was worried about what came next,too. What came next for all of them. She did not worry about Bill Junior as much, he was happy with the life and career he chose.

She worried for Dana and when she would go back to that little unremarkable house. Like Louise, she was in a new place but wanted to be back in her old one, Maggie was sure. Her apartment was so sterile and not like other places she had lived, which were always cozy and inviting. There was the alien cat pillow that Dana had laughingly shown her, but Maggie had seen her eyes fall on it many times when she visited. Dana had taken the time to purchase it, it was definitely something she had wanted. Maybe she hoped Fox would see it someday, or it would one day be back on the couch where Fox had spent so many nights.

She worried for Fox, although he seemed to be doing well with his therapist. He had nothing but good things to say about her, although he admitted she kicked his ass emotionally every week. He turned his cell phone back on and to Maggie, that was huge. She could get a hold of him anytime, and it helped her breathe easier. He was still sleeping upstairs and not falling back into old patterns. She could see he was progressing, it was simply slow going.

And Charlie. Maggie felt her heart ache at the pain left there by him. A fight, a misunderstanding, and the stubborn nature to not listen or hear what truly happened, led to years of not speaking. Maggie tried but to no avail. Charlie wanted nothing to do with any of them. Nothing could be repaired if one side of the party refused to listen to reason.

Maggie rolled over and thought of them when the kids were little. The loud dinners, laughter, and Bill’s booming voice when they got too silly. So many redheads sat around that little table and it made her smile. Her mother had red hair and Maggie loved Anne Shirley and her Green Gable adventures so much, she wanted red hair too. To have four children with the hair color she loved, she felt very blessed.

Closing her eyes, she took a few deep breaths and prayed. She prayed for peace, happiness, and understanding. She prayed for Louise and her family and the new life they were beginning. She prayed for herself, to be the help that was needed, in the way it was desired, and soon she had fallen asleep.

The next few days at the lake seemed to fly by. She and Louise slept in, stayed up late, cooked wonderful meals, drank a lot of wine, laughed, cried, and sat by the lake, finding peace in the quiet around them. The last day there, as the sun was setting, Maggie walked around alone and looked once again at the view and the beauty of the area.

She found a log that was not far from the house and just sat quietly, closing her eyes. Hearing the wind blowing through the trees, the water quietly hitting the rocks at the shore, she made a decision. When she died, she wanted her ashes scattered here, in this exact spot. She found peace here, spent time with a cherished friend, and let go of the negativity that was weighing her down.

Opening her eyes, she looked around again and nodded. Yes, this was the spot. She stood up and looked down at the rocks at her feet. She saw a few flat ones and attempted to skip them on the lake. A couple of them were good, but mostly they were duds. She laughed and then shrugged, throwing the last rock as far as she could.

She bent down as she saw rocks that struck her fancy, putting them in her pockets to take home. She would give a few to Dana for a type of decoration or paperweight. Maybe Fox would like a couple.

Weighted down, this time by choice, she put her hands in her pockets feeling the smoothness of the rocks inside, and walked back to the house, ready to head back home. Recharged and happy, she was ready for what was coming next for her, or rather continuing really.

Her path was clear and she would stay the course. She would help to reunite the two soulmates who had lost their way. Their path may lead them on separate trails, but she would be their marker in the woods, directing them where they needed to go, where their paths have always been destined to meet- in the middle.

What’s in a name? – Becoming Anne Shirley by Jessica Pickens

Sometimes art imitates life. And other times, artists take on aspects of their work. From the 1920s through mid-1940s, actress Anne Shirley graced the screen as a perky and sweet presence. If her name harkens memories of reading the Anne of Green Gables series, then this is no coincidence.

Born Dawn Evelyeen Paris, she started out in films with the stage name Dawn O’Day, a film moniker she used from 1922 to 1934. While many actors of today perform under their birth names, stars of the Classic Era often took a stage name that would be more memorable or unique to audiences.

However, due to confusion with other women, Shirley considered other stage names, such as Lenn Fondre and Lindley Dawn (but she was never billed under these names), according to a Nov. 18, 1934 newspaper article, “She’s a Star at 16!” by Molly Marsh. But after playing the lead role in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (‘34), the actress took on the name of the wide-eyed, chatterbox lead character—Anne Shirley.

“Anne Shirley has always been my favorite fiction character,” Shirley was quoted saying in a December 1934 Time magazine article. The fictional character originated in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables, about an 11-year-old orphan. In total, Montgomery wrote nine books about the Anne Shirley character, including one that was posthumously published in 2009. 

Prior to the 1934 film version, the story was first seen on screen in a 1919 version starring Mary Miles Minter and Paul Kelly, directed by William Desmond Taylor and with a screenplay by Frances Marion.

Before she starred as the young orphan from age 3 to 15, Shirley mostly acted in minor and uncredited roles, including playing Ann Dvorak as a child in THREE ON A MATCH (‘32) and a bit part as Anastasia in RASPUTIN AND THE EMPRESS (‘32).

Playing the lead role in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES at age 15 was her big break and brought on better roles. Some sources, including Marsh’s article, say that it was Shirley’s decision to change her name to Anne Shirley. But the November 1934 issue of The New Movie Magazine gives credit to Hollywood agent Henry Wilson, who at that time was also a reporter for the magazine.

Along with Shirley in the lead role, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES stars teen actor Tom Brown as Gilbert Blythe, O.P. Heggie as Matthew Cuthbert and Helen Westley as Marilla Cuthbert. If you look quick enough, you can also spot Bonita Granville and Ann Miller as uncredited classmates of Anne.

Released by RKO on November 23, 1934, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is a sweet, warm and wholesome family film. Shirley perfectly captures the wide-eyed innocence of the young girl. Though film critics hailed both the film and Shirley’s performance, author Lucy Maud Montgomery was displeased with the 1934 adaptation—and the 1919 film. She never received royalties for her story.

The wholesome persona she created in Anne of Green Gables followed Shirley into later roles, such as STELLA DALLAS (‘37) and MOTHER CAREY���S CHICKENS (‘38). Even in her 20s, Shirley played comedic but sweet roles. She was able to break out of this typecasting mold in the medical drama VIGIL IN THE NIGHT (‘40) as Carole Lombard’s selfish sister and as the femme fatale in her last film, MURDER, MY SWEET (‘44).

You light up. “Indiana? For a city boy?”

He pokes your side. “The war will be over soon, anyhow. We can go wherever you wanna go after that.”

He tosses you a sloppy grin, pulling you into his side. “You know I never would.”

“I want a family, Bucky.”

“Doll,” Bucky grabs your hands. His voice is softer now, a smooth timbre that holds weight. The voice of a man in love.

“Doll, you don’ have to worry ‘bout a thing. After this is all over, you an’ me? We’re gonna have the biggest family in Brooklyn.”

“I hope they get your eyes.”

“Well, I hope they get your everything.”

Suneel Gupta had his bags packed, ready to go to Washington. It was the night of Nov. 8, 2016, and Gupta, then a tech entrepreneur, was itching to leave the Bay Area and begin a new job in the Clinton White House.

“I got asked to lead up Hillary’s Office of Science and Technology Policy for the transition,” he told me. “Literally election night, I’m watching the results come in. Watching them with my wife, who is nine months pregnant with our second daughter. The next morning, I’m supposed to be on a plane, ready to go … get my marching orders.”

He calls it the shortest job of his life.

Gupta is a computer programmer who has worked as head of product development for Groupon and Mozilla and founded an app-based preventive health care company with his older brother, the neurosurgeon and medical reporter Sanjay Gupta. The Clinton job was supposed to be the next step in his career. But instead of flying out, Gupta spent the next morning unpacking and figuring out what he should do next. Today, he’s running for Congress in Michigan’s 11th District, where he grew up and now lives — one of five Democrats vying for the opportunity to flip a seat that has been solidly Republican for the past 53 years.1

When Gupta tells this story, he presents his run as the logical next step. The Clinton transition job disintegrates in front of his eyes on TV … and yada yada yada … he’s a candidate for Congress.

It’s possible it would have felt that natural, that obvious, to him after any election year. But 2016 wasn’t just any election year for scientists. Between Gupta’s personal Point A and Point B, there’s been a whole atlas of cultural movement among scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians, drawing them out of labs and startups and into politics. Thousands of STEM workers and their supporters marched on Washington to protest funding cuts and what they saw as a lack of respect for scientific expertise. Some scientists took it further, forming a political action committee to train and raise money for “science candidates” — a broad category that includes people with experience in research science, science education, engineering and technology jobs. That pro-science PAC, 314 Action, counted more than 300 people with STEM backgrounds who ran or are running for public office at all levels of government — 66 for federal-level and gubernatorial seats. Gupta is one of those 66.

Science has never truly been separate from the political system that funds it and uses the tools it creates. But scientists have not traditionally pushed so hard to make that relationship explicit, or to be the ones in charge of it. In the past, said Shaughnessy Naughton, the former chemist who founded 314 Action, scientists have sort of believed that they could just put the facts out there and the evidence would speak for itself. Before this, it had been rare for scientists to get involved in politics. “But it’s clear now that politicians are unashamed to meddle in science. And the way to push back is getting scientists elected. We have to have a place at the table,” she said.

When Gupta tries to win the Aug. 7 Democratic primary in the Michigan 11th, he won’t be just a lone guy with a science background running for Congress — a single data point, if you will. Instead, he’s part of a much larger sample — dozens of people trying to grant science some political power. It’s not clear that a commitment to STEM will help him win, though, nor is it clear what happens if Gupta and other science candidates do make it into office. That could mean more evidence-based policy — or more well-intentioned newbie politicians absorbed into the same old political machine. It could mean newfound respect (and research dollars) for science. Or it could turn “science” into a dog-whistle word for “liberal.”

Nobody knows what the result will be. There’s a word for what Gupta is running in this election, and it’s not “campaign.” It’s “experiment.”

“Who are we as Democrats?” asks Lisa Dirato, a liberal activist and a research chemist. At her kitchen table, in a neighborhood of manicured lawns, gabled porticos and brick facades near Northville, Michigan, Dirato hashed out for me how she was going to make her decision for the primary. Usually, she said, Democrats are lucky to get one person to run, let alone a crowd. It was a rare experience to choose, rather than accept. And she had some specific qualities she wanted to see in her choice. “[Democrats] have empathy, we care about people and we believe government can make people’s lives better,” she said. “When I listen to candidates, that’s what I’m listening for.”

“Are you listening for science at all?” I asked her.

“Um. You know, not really. And I’m a scientist. That’s my day job,” Dirato said. “I can’t even tell you why.”

This is the first challenge that Gupta, and any science candidate, faces.

Whenever I spoke with voters in Michigan’s 11th District, they were all more concerned with the state of the roads we had driven on that day than with the technological decision-making behind that infrastructure.

Voters — whether in the Michigan 11th or the U.S. at large — don’t seem to view science advocacy as a primary factor in their vote choice. But it’s not for lack of respect for the sciences. For the past 40 years, while partisan divides have increased, the General Social Survey, conducted by the research organization NORC at the University of Chicago, shows that trust in science remained about the same and that the scientific community is the second-most trusted institution in the country, after the military. And you’d expect even more excitement for science candidates in the Democratic Party, whose voters, Pew Research data suggests, are a little more trusting of scientists and a lot more supportive of federal funding for scientific research.

In practice, though, the science candidates’ results have been mixed. Of the 23 federal-level candidates originally endorsed by 314 Action, nine have made it past their primaries (one ran unopposed), nine lost, and five primaries (including Gupta’s) are still to come. Results for unendorsed science candidates have also been muddled. And in an ongoing Gallup poll that asks about the most important issues facing American society, few of the issues identified are particularly science related. It’s pretty clear that science isn’t going to be a single-issue vote for the left as, say, abortion is for some conservatives.

Nevertheless, Gupta thinks there’s a good case for why voters should want more people with science backgrounds walking the halls of Congress. While driving between apartment complexes, delivering Meals on Wheels to housebound residents of Waterford, Michigan, he talked to me about the way Congress is called to make decisions and explore alternatives to problems — choices that often involve some level of technology. “To understand these alternatives and how they best serve the American people, you have to know what is happening underneath the covers and be able to ask the right questions,” Gupta said. “When you don’t have a Congress that’s informed, what ends up happening is that it follows the directions, very much, of the special interests.”

But whenever I spoke with voters in Michigan’s 11th District — whether they leaned Democrat or Republican — they were all more concerned with the state of the roads we had driven on that day than with the technological decision-making behind that infrastructure. That lack of interest in Gupta’s tech expertise might make it hard for him to win the primary — without it, there’s not much to make him stand out from the pack. “I don’t think he’s found a breakthrough issue yet that separates him enough from the other candidates,” said Bill Joyner, a former county commissioner who served in part of the 11th District and remains involved in Democratic politics in the area. Most Democrats I spoke to told me they were still undecided in mid-July. Recent polling commissioned by the Detroit Free Press placed Gupta in third, 7 percentage points behind the front-runner, state Rep. Tim Greimel.

But if he can win the primary, Gupta has figured out a way he might be able to make his science background work for him in the general election — not by appealing to science, but by tapping into a growing interest in outsider politicians.

Student science, technology, engineering and math clubs are friendly ground for Gupta, who has been visiting groups throughout the district for months. He’s after the young members’ votes, of course. But he’s also there in the hopes of inspiring the next generation of science candidates — during a visit to the Oakland Community College STEMulated Club in Auburn Hills, Gupta asked club members about whether they might run for office someday.

“I’m not a politician,” said Jaquan Brown, a computer science student who is spending his summer working on a project modeling wind patterns.

“Hey, neither am I!” Gupta replied.

That’s a message Gupta took everywhere — from that left-leaning college STEM club to an eagle-festooned room full of stone-faced retirees. “I’m not a politician, I’m a problem-solver.” To Gupta, science can bridge the gap between the left and the right ��� but so can dissatisfaction with political insiders. And while science doesn’t seem to be shifting elections, a general dislike for experienced politicians does.

What’s important in voters’ minds is that politicians haven’t held elected office before.

Incumbency is still the primary factor that determines whether a candidate will win an election, said Sarah Treul, a professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But when there is no incumbent running — as is the case in the 11th — Treul’s research shows that it’s increasingly likely that the person with the least experience holding public office will walk away with the prize. These winners are seldom total political novices. They’ve worked on campaigns or they had been activists, or even just big donors, in the past. That’s true for Gupta (a former White House intern under Bill Clinton and a volunteer for the Obama campaign), as well as several other Democratic and Republican candidates for the 11th District seat.

But what’s important in voters’ minds is that politicians haven’t held elected office before, Treul said. These kinds of candidates always did better with Republican voters than Democratic voters, but Treul’s data shows that, since about 2008, the percentage of primaries won by inexperienced candidates has increased substantially for Republicans. “Republicans have clearly capitalized on that, going all the way to the president,” she said. “Politician is a dirty word.”

The filthiness of professional politicians came up in many conversations that I had with voters in the 11th District, and both Democratic and Republican activists in the district told me they expected an outsider to win the general election. The last two people to hold this congressional seat were first elected to Congress as novices. So it makes sense that Gupta’s stump speech highlights his outsider status in multiple ways. He’s not a politician — he’s a problem-solver who knows how to use technology to create practical solutions for tough problems. He’s not a politician — he’s a job creator who ran a successful startup firm. He’s not a politician — the only PAC he’s accepted money from is 314 Action.

That could help him in a general election in a Republican-leaning district. Gupta told me he thinks it could help him even in the primary, though that’s less clear. Democrats don’t have as strong of an attraction towards inexperienced candidates — take Greimel’s lead in the primary as an example. But to Gupta, the real fight in American politics isn’t between Democrats and Republicans, it’s between average voters and the powerful special interests that professional politicians represent. In his vision, science and evidence are a thing the warring parties can agree on, and then use to fight the real enemy.

There are real-world examples of science being exactly the kind of cross-party bridge builder that Gupta wants it to be. On July 23, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida introduced a bill to create a market-driven carbon tax as a solution to climate change. Curbelo is a Republican, and he’s a member of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus — 86 representatives, evenly split among Republicans and Democrats, all dedicated to advancing climate legislation.

If Gupta and the organizers of the March for Science were granted one wish from a bipartisan fairy, climate legislation championed by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle would be it. But all the results of the politicization of science haven’t exactly been the stuff of scientific fantasy.

Science can polarize people, as well as bring them together. The 2017 March for Science exacerbated — rather than healed — partisan divides, according to a survey published in the journal Political Science and Politics by Matthew Motta, a postdoctoral fellow in the science of science communication at the University of Pennsylvania. “In the aftermath, conservatives became more negative towards scientists and the science community, and so did moderates. But liberals became more positive,” Motta told me. Conservatives were more likely to believe scientists were out for personal gain after the march; liberals, less likely.

While there is evidence that science can be a unifying force that all Americans trust, there’s also evidence that — particularly on specific issues — Americans increasingly have polarized ideas about who “science” serves and what “evidence-based” means. For instance, while the General Social Survey shows that overall public trust in science has held fairly constant since 1974, it also shows conservatives losing that trust. While conservatives once had the most trust in science, relative to liberals and moderates, they now have the least. Meanwhile, congressional voting records on environmental issues became significantly more polarized after 1990, with Republicans increasingly likely to vote against anything tainted green. And there is evidence of strong ties between science and the political left. Fifty-two percent of scientists self-report as liberal, for instance, while just 9 percent call themselves conservative. (Those numbers are even less balanced in some social sciences, like psychology.) And most political donations from scientists go to Democrats.

Science is a uniter. Science is a divider. Science is a political Schrödinger’s cat.

Matthew Wilk, a Republican activist from the Michigan 11th, told me that evidence and data do matter to the decision-making process among conservative lawmakers. He’d seen that when he was a member of the Northville School Board. He and other conservative lawmakers were hungry for data, he told me. But they didn’t necessarily want academics to interpret that data. They’d rather just get raw numbers and draw their own conclusions because they didn’t trust academia to play fair. “It’s seen as biased towards Democrats,” Wilk said.

The movement to get scientist-politicians on the ballot probably hasn’t helped that perception. The 314 Action PAC endorsed candidates for all levels of public office — from state legislatures on up — and every person they chose was a Democrat. “I wouldn’t say it’s an indictment of science that scientists are running more as Democrats,” Naughton said. “It’s an indictment of Republican Party platform. It’s a real shame.”

But it’s incorrect to think of Democrats as “good” on science and Republicans as “bad” on it, Motta said. Surveys show that, by and large, liberals are more supportive of scientific research funding. “But in many ways, liberals and conservatives don’t look all that different,” he said. “They just differ in which types of scientific conclusions they don’t accept.”

There’s knowing that science isn’t a partisan issue intellectually, though, and then there’s feeling it. Politics is more about the gut than the brain. Today, on both sides of the aisle, tummies are rumbling.

“Ironically, we’re in this mess because we allowed science to be politicized,” said Caroline Weinberg, one of the founders of the March for Science. “It’s a problem if what we’re doing to resist that is furthering politicization instead of reducing it.”

This is where Gupta’s attempt to intertwine politics and science becomes an experiment as much as a campaign. Gupta talks about the importance of sharing evidence and learning. But twice on the campaign trail, Democratic supporters brought up fears about genetically modified food that aren’t supported by scientific evidence. And Gupta didn’t correct them. Instead, he pivoted to related issues of food security and safety that were less controversial. Politics might not be the best place to use science to change things people know with their guts.

What you’re left with is a bunch of facts that don’t quite add up to an evidence-based path to political success. The American people really do trust scientific expertise. But having scientific expertise doesn’t seem to be a major factor in how they vote. Americans across the political spectrum still agree on science more than we disagree. But the same surveys show that partisan divides on science exist, and every time someone runs a political campaign using science as an issue, it could be contributing to a growing divide — making it harder for science to function as a nonpartisan problem-solver in the future. Science is a uniter. Science is a divider. Science is a political Schrödinger’s cat.

For now, all Gupta can do is hope the beast is alive and well when the box opens. Which, for him, means continuing to push on the idea that he’s not a politician. He’s something else, and he can bridge divides. It’s an appealing message, said Maggie Peyton, a retiree to whom Gupta delivered a Meals on Wheels lunch one afternoon. “You’re almost talking my platform,” she told him. Though she and Gupta disagreed on abortion rights, Peyton encouraged him in his drive to get special interests out of Washington and fight career politicians. She’s one of those voters who Gupta told me he sees as a Republican with an open mind. And as he walked away from her door, pushing a cart loaded with lunch trays, Peyton waved and hollered after him.

“Don’t let politics wreck you!” she said.
