SO. I got tattooed earlier this week. It was a Pokémon Gen 2 'Get what you get' (GWYG) tattoo.

For those who don't know, a GWYG tattoo is where you get a random tattoo design from a gumball machine. Most artists will offer re-rolls for a fee.

I was originally scheduled to get this back in May, but the artist needed to reschedule - to AUGUST.

My mental health has been shite, and even on the day of the tattoo, I was not excited as I usually am before getting tattooed.

I have been following the artist carefully and checking off the mons that had already been rolled and tattooed. Some of the heavy hitters had already gone - Umbreon, Wooper, Quagsire, Celebi - but the 3 I knew I would 100% need to re-roll on had not yet been tattooed. They were Smoochum, Ariados and Spinarak.

Anyway. I got my ball, opened it and... Smoochum.

Y'ALL.

I re-rolled. Knowing I would need to get whatever it was and praying on account of my possibly overactive arachnophobia that it wasn't one of the spider mons.

It was Ho-Oh. HO-OH. A FREAKIN' LEGENDARY.

We found the perfect place for it - below my spooky Gengar tattoo, done by the same artist last October - filling out the front of my right leg.

I returned to Brum and caught up with my partner, who had made a start on grocery shopping. He did a cursory sweep over the body parts he could see when I found him in the supermarket, but I knew he hadn't spotted it.

Later, he guessed what it was. He wanted the first letter - H. He must have guessed every other H Gen2 mon before I was like "It's a legendary" & he was like "HO-OH?!??!?".

Now, I have been with my partner for... 13 years? When we first got together, he was playing through Soulsilver. As a kid he had played Silver for a million hours and had several Level 100 mons. I had played Pokémon Yellow as a kid but due to being 💫 poor 💫 stopped there.

So. I ended up buying a 2nd-hand Nintendo DS & a copy of HeartGold to compliment his SS.

Guys, it was a STUPIDLY fortuitous run. I caught the Pokérus in-game, and caught a shiny Articuno after just 15 minutes of semi-serious soft resets. I had also used a Ho-Oh in the Elite 4.

My partner was rather sweet. Said he liked how it was almost like a throw-back to that time, to our first few months as a couple when we were at university. How it was meaningful without meaning to be.

I may not have gotten a Yadoking, or a Murkrow, or any of the others I secretly thought would be awesome to get - but I got a little nostalgic piece that both does & doesn't call back to us as much younger people, desperately eager to share the experience of HGSS with each other.

When I told the tattoo artist I was re-rolling, she said she was surprised with how many people had said they disliked Smoochum.

When she uploaded the reel onto IG, some people were upset I had re-rolled, whilst others understood. I commented & said this was a good thing because it means she will (hopefully) be tattooed on someone who really, really likes her.

I got lucky - very lucky.

Yes, and no.

I've had unwanted comments from men thinking the tattoos are an open invitation for conversation, condescending pet-names and - worse - comments about my body.

It's also had me chuckle to myself disbelievingly, as I observed one old lady catch sight of me on the bus, and clutch her granddaughter close as if to shield me from her sight (little did that woman know I was on my way to work where I was teaching a three-year-old that day!). On the same day on the MTR, I saw a girl staring at my tattoos so intently I deliberately moved my clothing so she could see more easily.

I've also overheard people crying out with joy when they spotted my Gengar tattoo, talking excitedly when they recognised the fat purple ghost on my leg. I've overheard close-by old ladies in coffee shops talk about tattoos, what they'd get if they could (they can, but I don't tell them that). Compliments from employees in restaurants, shops and the like. Whispered confessions from hijabi classmates about what they'd get if they could.

I've exchanged sombre, understanding nods with others who also have a semicolon tattoo.

Ultimately, though, it's all totally worth it. I like my body so much more now that I'm more visibly tattooed. I take better care of my skin (which is actually really helpful whenever eczema decides to make its unsightly return). I'm happier.

Still, though. There's only so many times you can hear the same lines over and over with the same beatific, patient smile as if it's the first time anyone's ever said anything of the sort.

The Challenge

I've enjoyed whump for as long as I can remember, when I was a kid I rewatched my favourite scenes in movies and reread the whumpiest parts of books I liked, later on I discovered listening to music and watching music videos and such to scratch that itch in my brain. I've been collecting whumpy songs (lyrics, lines and videos) since 2020, and the list just keeps growing, and now that I finally organised it, I thought I'd share it in the most fun format I could think of; the challenge was born, in a format that suits my personal quirks the best, which I hope you'll find to be easy to work with.

Using any of the tropes is optional, up to you if you use all, some, one or none/song (im saying this for like heavier tropes specifically or personal squicks, otherwise the challange is in using them all ;))

Completely random, you choose (or use a random number generator to choose) 2 numbers, one 1-10 (may change as I add more characters to write for) and the other 1-302 and I will write whatever prompt that happens to be with whichever character it happens to be. (every so often I may change up the number order of the prompts and characters so that it doesn't become too easy to figure out. Alternatively you can ask for a GWYG or put this 🎰 emoji in the askbox and I'll randomise the numbers.

Types of Prompt Fills

GWYG and Prompt list fills will almost always be completed as a fic or drabble, headcannons can be requested as a custom request.

A shorter fill. Will generally be bullet points.

A short fic, 500 words or less.

Any response over 500 words.

Nothing explicit, it may be suggestive, but there is no explicit sex scenes. Does not mean that it won't contain dark content, just nothing too sexy.

Explicit sexual content, not for reading around anyone who might be reading over your shoulder. (I'm still practicing writing N/SFW so I make no promises as to the quality of this writing)
