(posted to Ao3 previously, first time here. Based off of Bob Seger's Night Moves.)
That summer Hopper was one of the tallest boys in school and still on the edge of lanky. But beneath his shirt lay a chest as solid rock from all those workouts during football season and beyond.
His mind drifted off to her. That curtain of dark hair and those big dark eyes. Beneath those baggy clothes she wore was a nice body with sexy curves. And legs for days. How could her legs seem so impossibly long when she was so tiny?
She's still so very tiny, with those big dark eyes and dark hair falling on her shoulders.
"I'm boreeeeed!" She moaned. "Jimmy let's go do something!" She said in a whining voice.
"I know a place. Let's go on an adventure."
"I swear if this is another back alley, or some seedy bar, I'm breaking up with you Jim Hopper." She teased.
Â
"A cornfield, Jim? Seriously?" She huffed from the passenger side of his GTO, her tiny feet crossed at the ankle on the dashboard.
"Just, just keep your underwear on. This is a cool place. None of the kids at school know about this."
"Is it because it's lame?" Jim pulled the car to a stop at the back of the cornfield, at the beginning of the woods.
"Kids think this place is haunted. You think so?" She asked. "I don't believe in that shit." He replied. "But I know we have plenty of privacy out here. We can do whatever we want out here."
She rolled her eyes and climbed over the bench seat into the back. "Well get back here!" She laughed, legs spread to make room for him to come lay between them.
"What if that guy with the hook hand finds us? You know scrapes up the car, kills the dude?" She grinned. "He'd have a hell of a fight on his hands if he kept me from you!" He smiled.
His lips sought hers in the dark later, bodies barely illuminated by the moonlight and dashboard lights. Country music played from the car stereo as he kissed her soft and slow, her hips coming up to meet his from the seat.
Jim kissed along her jaw, hands under her shirt. He was already shirtless, pants unbuttoned and nearly unzipped. He licked a trail of fire along the hollow of her throat, hands busy unbuttoning those blue jean cutoffs that had been driving him crazy all night. Once free of her clothes, he pushed his jeans down around his thighs.
The car windows fogged up and the sounds of shared moans and pants filled the air. The fireflies danced around the car, the corn swaying behind.
The smack of Jim's palm planting against the steamy window left a handprint to run moisture down the glass.
Â
And so their lives went. Jim wanted Joyce all the time. From making out in the dark room at school, or parked out in the alley behind Melvald's, or back to their spot in the woods.
Things became apparent between them. Closeness and heat between them, but cool and collect at school. No one knew that erratic, emotion driven teenager from the poor side of the tracks was running around with Jim Hopper. The Jim Hopper. Army veteran John Hopper's golden son. Captain of the football team. Jim cared about none of it and wanted to parade around Joyce on his arm like a trophy, a gift he was given to show off.
"Hey Joyce, why are you so hush hush about us?" He asked as they lay on the flat rock beside the lake, naked as jaybirds. She traced the water droplets on his chest and swept her wet hair back behind her ear. Skinny dipping had been tonight's adventure, and it had been a good one. The light was a darkening blue around them as the sun sunk lower.
"Don't you just find it easier? We'd be the talk of the whole school. For God sakes, they'd run it in the school paper I'm sure."
"I don't care about any of that. I love you, Joycie."
She sighed and stared up at the stars.
"Don't they make you feel small?" She asked pointing up to the stars that hung between the canopies of trees around them.
"Joyce..don't leave me hangingâŠ"
"Those stars are millions and millions of years old, and we're not even two decades old yet. What makes us think we have any idea what love means?"
He sighed and crossed his arms beneath his head.
"Man, I can so tell you're from the drama department. Won't you give me something back? Id hope you at least like me, or is this just all physical stuff. I hope we're more than that."
The heat was heavy and humid, making them feel as wet as they had been when they were swimming. "We're more than that, Jimmy. I'd say I like you but far as love...I don't know what love is like yet."
Scattered streaks of lightning in the clouds barely lit up the sky. The thunder that followed sounded close. "One Mississippi, two MississippiâŠ" She counted. "We should probably go, that storm is coming close."
The sky grew a shade darker, edging closer to black. A cool gust of wind crossed their bare bodies and Joyce rolled over on the rock, reaching for her clothes. "Let's go, it's about to rain."
"Joyce, we have to talk about this." He begged as he grabbed his jeans and underwear and began dressing. "Are you like, using me?"
"I'm not using you if you're getting fun out of it too."
The Heavens darkened and the rain suddenly fell in a sheet and Joyce yelped, dashing to the car and climbing inside. Jim grabbed his shirt and strode to the car. His body was soaked again in the rain and Joyce started the car, illuminating his thin, muscular frame in the headlights.
He stood there and looked at her, standing still and watching her.
"Get in the car stupid!" She yelled out.
"If you don't love me, I'd assume get struck by lightning right here!"
Â
Jim rolled over in his sleep and glanced at his bedside clock. Three am. Thunder rumbled and he realized that's what had woken him. He laid there with the vision of Joyce naked in the back of that old GTO, a slight flush of pink on her cheeks, her lips swollen from his kisses.
"If you should lose me
Oh yeah, you'll lose a good thing
If you should lose me
Oh yeah, you'll lose a good thing"
He sang lowly before humming the rest of the song.
The thunder rumbled again and he began counting.
"One Mississippi, two Mississippi, threeâŠ."

Long Beach Grand Prix now the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach
Grand Prix may have a new official name, but it remains one of the highlights on the calendar for any race fans.
What began as the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1975, continued as the United States Grand Prix West from 1976-1983, to the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach from 1980-2018, will now be known as the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.
âThat happens to be the exact message we have been using in all of our advertising â âNew Race Name. Same Fast Game,ââ Jim Michaelian, President and CEO of the Gran Prix Association of Long Beach told NBC Sports on Monday. âThat captures the essence of what you will experience when you come to the 2019 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.â
The week-long event brings Southern Californiaâs glamour crowd to Long Beach to watch fast cars, soak up the sun, attend concerts and tour the exposition center. Only the Indianapolis 500 and the Grand Prix of Monaco would be seen as more prestigious races.
But itâs more than just racing.
âBoth days contain a significant number of what I call ânon-hardcore racing fans,ââ Michaelian said. âThey are coming out, enjoying the atmosphere, participating in a lot of the activities here whether it is in the Lifestyle Expo, or the Kids Zone or the go-kart tracks or attending the concerts or Friday and Saturday night or Drifting on those two nights.
âThe attraction for our guests all three days is to come out and enjoy themselves and take in some of the racing. Robby Gordonâs SST Trucks are always popular, and Drifting is always packed in the evening.
âAnd who doesnât want to see Sports Cars in action like IMSA has, not only in DPI but also in the GTLM. Those are really aspirational type cars with Ford GT, Porsche, Corvette and BMW. Those are cars people would love to own and love to drive and they get to see them in action here.
In addition to a new sponsor, IMSA will help celebrate its 50thYear with an historic GTO race with 32 of the old GTO cars from 1990 and 1991. There will also be a display of GTP cars in the Promenade area of the Long Beach Convention Center. There are six events scheduled including NTT IndyCar, IMSA WeatherTech Series, the Pirelli GT4 America Series, Robby Gordonâs SST Trucks, Formula Drift and the IMSA Historic GTO Race as all part of the schedule.
Michaelian has been part of this event since its inception in 1975 when the event was created by Englandâs Chris Pook, who was running a travel agency in Long Beach at the time and hoped to turn the city into a destination.
âThat first year was a real scramble,â Michaelian recalled. âWe didnât get approval from the State of California Corporation Commissioner to spend the funds we had raised until July. We had that race on September 28, 1975 so we were really hustling to put that event on. You canât compare what we do now to what we did then.â
It ended up being a great event full of legendary racing names. As time went on and the promoter became more efficient at conducting the race, they were able to branch out with non-racing options to help attract more fans to the circuit.
The old Toyota Celebrity Race was a very popular addition that was held for 40 years with entertainment stars competing in a race around the circuit. When the Long Beach Convention Center was completed, that became a central zone for the non-racing portion of the event.
âAs time has gone on, weâve looked to add things,â Michaelian said. âWe have created a Food Truck line on the backside. We have the Patron Club next to the IndyCar Paddock. We have been able to maintain and attract more of the non-track hardcore fans to give them reason to attend.
This yearâs concert lineup includes Hispanic group El Tree for the third time. Saturdayâs headliner is Cold War Kids with Moontower, an indie-electronic musical group as the opening act.
The real star of the show, however, is the racing on the track.
The race course is tight and difficult and has featured eight different configurations since that first race in 1975. When it comes to the NTT IndyCar Series, Long Beach is the biggest street race on the schedule. Only the legendary Indianapolis 500 is a bigger race on the 17-race schedule.
That is why any driver that wins at Long Beach feels the history and significance that comes with that victory.
âFor sure, more so from the legacy of the track and not the size of the race or the people there,â last yearâs winner, Alexander Rossi, told NBC Sports.com. âItâs how that city has hosted a race of some sort, whether it be Formula One or IndyCar or both for such a long period of time has made it such a historical and significant race. Thatâs the cool thing. Itâs another race where my name is going to get to be among some pretty amazing racing drivers is pretty special.
Among the unique aspects of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is the event continues to thrive and has helped transform the city of Long Beach into a destination area. There has been tremendous commercial development near the street course since it first staged the Grand Prix back in 1975.
âIt is something that would never happen in 2019 if it didnât have a special place in the cityâs heart and legacy that went along with it.,â Rossi said. âI think we are very fortunate to continue to race there and should appreciate every year and opportunity that we have to go there and compete and have a show for what is an awesome fan base.â
With its luxurious hotels across the street from the race course, and one major hotel actually inside the race course, the drivers and teams enjoy the amenities and convenience at Long Beach.
âItâs awesome,â Rossi said. âIf I have an 8:15 a.m. meeting, I set my alarm for 7:55 a.m. It makes our lives pretty easy, itâs great and convenient. The general vibe and atmosphere that goes along with that race is great. Along that same strip are all the restaurants and night life and people there and the music. The weather is always sunny and 75 in Southern California. Itâs an amazing weekend and something we look forward to every year.
âThe best thing about it is the convenience to be so close to good food and good people being so close to the race track.â
Winning the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is big to an IndyCar driver, and itâs just as important for the drivers in IMSA.
âLong Beach has always been a unique event for us,â IMSA GTLM Corvette Racing driver Tommy Milner told NBC Sports.com. âI can remember the first time I went there in 2007, the atmosphere there was different than any other event I had ever experienced. You have casual fans that attend the race and people that may not follow Sports Car racing like a diehard racing fans. Itâs fun to talk to people from all different walks of life.
âMaybe itâs the first time they see our race and we explain what we do or to see young kids and their eyes light up when they see these cars for the first time run on the city streets.
âItâs unique and something we donât experience any place out.
âThe history of Long Beach, itâs LA. All of it together â the crowd, the atmosphere, the history and the great races we have â makes it a lot of fun. The streets after the race are alive with fans. Itâs a fun event to go to and even better to win. Itâs definitely a highlight of the season.â

2018âs Monterey Car Week Features Concepts and Classic Contenders
A longtime Los Angeles business executive, Manny Bojorquez leads a diversity of entrepreneurial ventures. Overseeing enhancements with HyperCar Development that improve the performance of McLaren sportscars, Manny Bojorquez regularly attends industry events such as Monterey Car Week. A centerpiece of the weeklong event is the Pebble Beach Concours dâElegance, which started in 1950 and includes the vintage-car parade Tour dâElegance, which traverses 17-Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula. In addition, competitions are held in categories such as Postwar Sports and Prewar Preservation. As reported in Forbes, a highlight of the 2018 running was the Best of Show winner, a 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta that had been painstakingly restored and received praise for its aesthetics. Monterey Car Week also featured a number of high-profile auctions that included the record $48.4 million sale of a groundbreaking 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and the sale for $22 million of a 1935 Duesenberg SSJ that was owned by actor Gary Cooper. Among the new vehicles unveiled was Infinitiâs Prototype 10, a single-seat electric speedster concept, and the Bugatti Divo, which combines unparalleled lightness with a 236 miles-per-hour top speed.

2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion: IMSA Birthday Blowout
Monterey Car Week is an intense and whirlwind display of automotive excellence. Over the years the number of the events that occur in mid-August of each year seems to have grown exponentially. There are car shows, car parades, car auctions, cars park in parking lots, cars on the streets. Whatever oneâs preference, it can be found during Car Week. Sure, the famous linchpin of Car Week is the Pebble Beach Concours dâElegance, and we donât dismiss its prestige or importance, but for us the track at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway and the Monterey Motorsports Reunion is where the magic really happens. Nothing in the world gets us more excited than Car Week and no event more than the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
We preach the gospel at every opportunity. On the first night of this yearâs garage stalking sessions of Cannery Row looking for hypercars we met some young men also on the treasure hunt. Happy to see any young person looking for car photos and not tracking down Pokeman warms our hearts, and we took a few moments to explain to these young gentlemen that no matter what hypercar you find crawling the streets during Car Week, the track is where the real education begins. No garage queens or hermetically sealed art pieces. The cars at the Reunion span almost 100 years of automotive history and each one hits the track at some point in the weekend.
When it was announced that this yearâs event would focus on the International Motor Sports Associationâs (IMSA) 50th birthday, we got excitedâŠ.very excited indeed.
Before we get into the event, some of you might need a primer on exactly what IMSA is. Discussing a sportâs sanctioning body isnât all that sexy, but it is relevant. 50 years of anything is worth talking about, and 50 years of some of the best auto racing on the planet is doubly so.
From IMSA.com:
âThe sanctioning body was founded in 1969 by John Bishop with the assistance of NASCAR President Bill France Sr. Bishop was a 12-year employee of the Sports Car Club of America, who elected to follow his own vision for professional road racing. Bishop and his wife, Peggy, brought a family-style feel to the organization, based in Bridgeport, Conn.
The first IMSA-sanctioned race was at Pocono International Raceway in Oct., 1969, a Formula Ford and Formula Vee event that paid $3,000 and attracted 348 spectators. Bishop abandoned his plans for open-wheel competition by the end of 1970, concentrating on forming a six-race series in 1971 for FIA Group 2 and Group 4 sports cars, along with âBaby Grandâ stock cars.
That series became the IMSA GT Series . The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company began sponsoring what became Camel GT in 1972, and the series quickly gained in popularity. Bishopâs vision of adding prototype sports cars in the early 1980s proved to be a huge success, and the series thrived throughout the 1980s with many of the top names in U.S. and international sports cars battling on North Americaâs top road circuits in Porsche, Jaguar, Ford, Nissan, Chevrolet and Toyota Camel GTP Prototypes.
In addition to the GTP Prototypes , Camel GT also featured Camel Lights Prototypes and production-based competition in the GTO, GTU and American GT classes. IMSA also sanctioned American stock cars in the Kelly American Challenge; small sedans in the Champion Spark Plug Challenge; production cars in the Firestone Firehawk Endurance Championship; exotics in the Bridgestone Super Car Championship; and open-wheel cars in the Barber Saab Pro Series.
Bishop sold the organization to Florida businessmen Mike Cone and Jeff Parker in 1989. The company was relocated to Tampa, Fla. With a sharp drop in participation in the GTP class due to a challenging economy, IMSA announced a shift to a revolutionary concept for 1994, introducing the World Sports Car, an open-cockpit prototype.
There were many additional changes for 1994. Florida businessman and GT racer Charlie Slater purchased IMSA. Exxon USA took over sponsorship of the series, which became the EXXON World Sports Car Championship, while GT competition took place in the EXXON Supreme GT Series.
In September 1996, the International Motor Sports Group â a conglomerate including Roberto Mueller and Andy Evans â purchased IMSA and changed its name to Professional SportsCar Racing for 1997.
Many changes took place over the following three years. The United States Road Racing Championship sanctioned races with the assistance of the Sports Car Club of America in 1998-99.
While originally affiliated with the USRRC, Don Panoz departed to hold the inaugural Petit Le Mans endurance race at Road Atlanta in 1998. He expanded that concept into a full series in 1999, the American Le Mans Series. He envisioned bringing European-style endurance sports car racing to America â highlighted by the 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans. Panoz also acquired rights to IMSA, which became the sanctioning body for the organization.
Faced without a sanctioning body for Daytona International Speedwayâs flagship road race, Jim France put together a team of investors who shared his vision for a new North American sports car championship to carry on the legacy of the series co-founded by his father, Bill France Sr., 30 years earlier. GRAND-AM Road Racing debuted with the 2000 running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, and ran its opening three seasons with similar classes to the ALMS.
From its birth in 1999, the ALMS proclaimed its racing âFor the Fans,â and built a loyal group of followers. The series later undertook a number of initiatives to become recognized as the Global Leader in Green Racing, gaining both national and international recognition for its Green Racing protocols.
GRAND-AM took a radical step when it introduced the Daytona Prototype as its lead class beginning in 2003. The new car became popular with both fans and drivers for its durability, affordability and safety. The DP attracted competitors from NASCAR, IndyCar and international sports car racing, especially to GRAND-AMâs marquee events at Daytona, Watkins Glen and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
While both series were successful on their own, it became apparent that they would have to combine in order to grow the sport. The two groups announced in Sept. 2012 they would merge into one organization beginning with the 2014 season. Fittingly, it was also announced that the unified series would be sanctioned by IMSA.
IMSA's WeatherTech SportsCar Championship opens with a pair of historic events â the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring fueled by Fresh from Florida â building on the vision of John Bishop and Bill France Sr. from 45 years ago.â
In a nutshell, if youâve enjoyed professional racing in the US for the last 50 years, IMSA has had some hand in insuring that it was safe, well managed and indeed, professional. Our hats are off to IMSA for their work and dedication to the stewardship of our favorite sport.
And now, on to the showâŠ..
And what a show it was. As we expected from the release of the entry list, (550 cars in 14 groups) the paddock of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca was packed with awesome. Along with the cars weâre reunited with almost every year, there were many cars weâd never seen before. Itâs crazy to think that after watching and reading about racing for over 20 years that thereâd be anything new to see. But there was a lot to take inâŠmore curves, more wings, more cylinders, more paint & chrome and more history. Adding to the diversity this year, and as noted in our report on the Sonoma Speed Festival, is the inclusion of âlaterâ model cars that now fall under the banner of âvintageâ and/or âhistoric race cars. Weâre not complainingâŠweâre glad to see all of the diversity. We love that one event can highlight cars made with wood and bicycle pumps at the same event with cars made of computers and carbon fiber. To prove the point take a look at the 1916 National AC on the left and the Audi R8 LMP on the right.
Along with the standard historic/vintage fare, a few major automakers flashed some of their new wares in the paddock. Not surprisingly, the biggest attraction by far was Chevroletâs new C8 Corvette in a new color called called Zeus Brown. Based on what weâd seen of the C8 from the internet over the past few weeks, our jury is till out on the new Vette. Unfortunately, seeing it in about the most unexciting color, didât exactly help us deliver our verdict on it. Though admittedly not our cup of tea, we were glad to finally see one in the flesh.
ï»żOn the other end of the excitement spectrum was the car Ford brought to the party. As you may or may not know, Ford is discontinuing its factory GT racing programâŠ.but theyâre launching one last salvo. Ford Performance and Canadaâs Multimatic Inc. are making a limited run of 45 track only Mk II cars that will set folks back $1.2 million (starting price). This monster with sport enhanced aero kit and a 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine (and a cool snorkel intake!!!). Ford didât play it safe on their presentation. Heck, they didnât even show it in one of their heritage liveries. This beauty sported the same Ford/Multimatic livery featured at the carâs debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month. Not over the topâŠjust right!
ï»żJust outside the main paddock, in the lagoon area, were a few equally sensational cars from a couple of the worldâs smallest automakers, presented by Michelin. Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus doubled down with a spectacular blue carbon SCG003 and the outrageous new Steve McQueen homage, the SCG Boot. Weâve been waiting to be in the presence of any SCG and now, of a sudden, there were two. We were unprepared for the blue carbon magnitude of the 003 and completely astounded by the radical look and sheer girth of the Boot (that we didnât even know existed).
The very next day, in the same spot, we were blown away again by the presence of not one, but two Koenigseggs. I was so thrown by seeing the new Jesko (pronounced Yess-Ko), I didnât notice the second car, a lovely two tone Agera RS. Speaking of the Agera, the Jesko, a tribute to the founderâs father, will be the Ageraâs successor. This twin turbocharged aerodynamic masterpiece will produce over 1,200 horsepower on pump gas and cost around $2.8 million. Year after year, Michelinâs lagoon display inspires awe.
BMW had a heavy presence at the Reunion with four iconic racers The 1975 Group 4 3.0 CSL, the 1999 V12 LMR, the 2001 E46 M3 GTR and the 2011 E92 M3 GT. These cars all competed in the Masters Endurance Legends class, involving two 40 minute races. The BMW V12 LMR in the hands of long time BMW driver Bill Auberlin put on a masterclass in Sundayâs 40 minute race. After going off track in the opening laps Auberlen fought back to second place. Watching a seasoned professional racing driver carve his way way through a field of legendary endurance racing machines is, to use an overused adjective, epic. Even by todayâs standards the Williams and BMW developed V12 sings a song like no other, and looks just as fast as it did on its first win at the â99 12 hours of Sebring in the hands of Tom Kristensen, Jorg Muller, and JJ Lehto. This collaboration between BMW and Formula 1âs Willams team produced only four examples of the LMR.
The fun wasnât over. Making a return to the Reunion was McLarenâs two-time Formula 1 world champion, Mika Hakkinen. The Flying Finn was on had to drive demonstration laps in the 1970 McLaren M8D/3 âBatmobileâ Can-Am racer. While only responsible for âdemonstration lapsâ a description leaving broad room for a driver to dial it in, or drive the wheels off. Hakkinen chose the latter and pushed the M8D/3 McLaren like he had been driving it all his life. The McLaren lacking in the aero grip of modern race cars made up for its limitations through shear and raw power with its Chevy 7 liter V8 putting out 670bhp at 6800rpm with 600 lbâ
ft (810 Nâ
m) of torque. We witnessed Hakkinen clock 175mph on the main straight. Not bad for an almost 50 year old car.
It wasnât just Hakkinen that came to put his foot down. The weekend was packed with legends of sports car racing. Brian Redman was on hand bringing back memories of his time at the 1976 Rolex 24 at Daytona where he worked on his on car while it was stopped on track. Current Team Penske driver Ricky Taylor was there as was nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen. IMSA legend Hurley Haywood was the Grand Marshal and spent the weekend signing autographs and posing for photos for eager fans. There were dozens of previous and current sports car drivers all approachable for fans to interact with. The Reunion wasnât just about cars, it was a Reunion of the best racing talent that has even been a track. Happy 50th Birthday IMSA!!!
We had big expectations for the Reunion and we can happily report that it met our expectations and more. Its an event of pure joy, and one of the last events outside of Europe that is a living homage to racing history. As always, we think our pictures tell a better story than our words ever could. That said, please check out the galleries below featuring the people and cars of the 2019 Reunion.

[AA] Racer's Curse
--This is an unfinished piece which I don't mind any of you wanting to add to it or finish it. Sorry for any confusion due to grammar.--
The smell perfumed the air
Clouds of smoke rolled from the back of the car as it was spinning tires.
It was a gunmetal black '69 Chevelle that had a 454 4-barrel V8.
Bohemian Rhapsody was blaring on the radio and the song kicked into overdrive as soon as the light turned green.
Kelly had been driving since she was 11 years old.
The day started like no other but when the car crossed the starting line everything would change for Kelly.
Kelly's rival was a man from New York and had this dark aura that surrounded him.
His car was painted light green with a single white stripe that was slightly off-center down the length of the car.
She had never seen this man at her hometown racing strip before but she was glad to have the chance to take his money.
Kelly was only defeated once due to a malfunction in the turbo system she had built from scratch.
"If I can beat this guy I will have enough money to finally move on to bigger racing tournaments away from home" Kelly thought to herself.
Kelly lived for the wind in her face and the sound of the gasoline exploding inside of the engines.
They both left the starting line and were neck in neck until she saw smoke rising from the Porsche 911 Carrera.
BANG the car lost control and veered straight into Kelly.
Kelly tried to keep the car straight but it was too late. As soon as the Porsche connected, two of the wheels came off the ground and the Chevelle went tumbling.
Her life flashed before her eyes.
Would she make it through this?
Would she ever have a family of her own?
Why did this have to happen today of all days.
It was the anniversary of her fathers death.
She grew up idolizing him and the way he kept his cool on the drag strip.
It was in her blood.
She couldn't handle the thoughts going through her head and she passed out.
Kelly woke up in the hospital in the middle of the night. The man with the Porsche was the only person in the room
Her mother had left her father when she was young and she wasn't the type to make friends.
She had no one.
She was frozen in fear but had all of this anger towards the unknown rival for making one of the worst days in her life that much more unbearable.
She wanted to jump out of bed and strangle him to death.
Only thing was she couldn't figure out how to move her legs.
"Why are you here!, She screamed at him and then winced from the pain in her chest.
She looked around at herself.
She had one leg in a raised cast, and she was hooked up to an IV that had a morphine drip attached to it and pressed the button 3 times.
The stranger moved closer to her.
He looked like he hadn't even received a scratch.
When their cars collided it stopped his car almost in place while hers went tumbling on down the strip.
"I know you don't know me, but I know you." He said.
His voice was soft and reassuring.
She thought, "The nerve of this guy.... coming into my hospital room after he was the one that caused all of this to happen.
"Kelly", He started, "I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I can't expect your forgiveness and I won't ask for it"
"The whole reason I---"
Little did he know Kelly had pushed the emergency button on her remote which was what she was trying to accomplish at first but ended up pressing the morphine drip button instead.
Security busted through the door and jerked the man up and forced him out of the room.
Kelly swore at that moment the next time she saw him would definitely be the last time that she would.
A few months later*
Kelly had completed her physical rehabilitation quicker than most.
She was determined to get back to racing.
Her last doctors appointment was today and all she was needing was his approval to get back in the seat once more.
Something felt off about today, but she couldn't place it. Like a dark cloud just on the horizon waiting to release that rainy-day-parade over the city.
Kelly thought nothing of it and brushed it off as the jitters from wanting to hear the words "You're good to go".
As she stepped out she took a look at her car.
It was the one her dad gave her before he passed away from cancer.
It wasn't too appealing but, ooh girl did it have a mean sound.
Beat up and a little rusted was the '66 Pontiac GTO.... It could definitely use some work.
The feeling didn't let up. It was like someone was breathing down the back of her neck and it gave her the chills.
"YEEEESSSSS!!!!" She got her answer and she jumped straight in the car and drove off to the track.
The sun was setting as she was pulling in and the sky couldn't look more gorgeous with the neon purplish/orange colors flowing in and out of the clouds.
She revved her engine to the 7000 RPM mark and let the clutch go.
All eyes were on Kelly now as she slowly rolled her car to the starting line.
She rolled down her window and held out a rubber band stack of 20's.
"Any takers?" She hollered.
She revved the GTO a few times and heard another car pulling up from behind her.
As she looked in the rearview mirror she caught a glimpse of what she thought to be the man in the Porsche.
Her competition rolled through and obstructed her line of sight before she could get a better look.
"Hey, cutie I hope you know how to handle that heap better than you take care of it." The man said.
Kelly replied, "Put your money where your mouth is and you'll learn real quick".
The sun had finally sunk down past the trees.
A short blonde lady stood in between the two cars and pointed at Kelly, she nodded.
The lady pointed at her rival, he revved his engine.
She reached inside of her tank top and removed her bra.
She raised one arm and then the other that was holding the bra and dropped it.
The moment it touched the ground Kelly shifted into 1st and simultaneously removed her foot from the clutch and put the gas pedal to the floor.
The GTO flew off the starting line in front of the Red '70 Dodge Charger. While it was only for a few milliseconds, the Charger had spun tires before crossing the line.
That was the main reason that Kelly did her burnout was so that her tires would stick to the ground and have less of a chance of spinning on takeoff.
Kelly beat him by half a second.
The guy in the Charger handed her $200 and scoffed as he walked back to his car.
Kelly had a small house on the outskirts of town.
It felt so good to be able to take a bath again.
She wasn't supposed to submerge her stitches in water for the entirety of the time she was in rehabilitation and hated taking showers.
Pizza usually took about 30 minutes to be cooked and delivered.
She ordered the usual; Pan pizza with philly cheesesteak and bell peppers with garlic parmesan white sauce instead of the regular robust tomato sauce.
She heard a knock on the door.
It was a lot quicker than she was thinking it would be.
Kelly threw her bathrobe on and answered the door.
It was him. He was a lot taller than she remembered.
His eyes were so soothing to look into.
She was speechless, but for some reason she felt at peace in his presence.
He grabbed her by the shoulder and pushed her aside and shut the door.

Acura Becomes Title Sponsor of Grand Prix of Long Beach
Southern Californiaâs Grand Prix of Long BeachâNorth Americaâs premier street-circuit motorsports eventâdidnât need long to land another automotive manufacturer as its title sponsor. Following longtime partner Toyotaâs August decision not to renew its contract with Grand Prix of Long Beach organizers, Acura has stepped into the large void with what it and GPLB officials termed a âmultiyearâ deal, confirmed Tuesday in an official announcement.
The immensely popular race weekendâheld annually in Aprilâfeatures on-track action from the NTT IndyCar Series, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Historic IMSA GTO Challenge, Robby Gordonâs Stadium Super Trucks, Pirelli GT4 America, and Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge. Other fan-oriented offerings include an exotic-car parade, a large fan zone and memorabilia display, and concerts.
Acuraâs confirmation as Long Beachâs new title sponsor answers a question that had lingered over the business of U.S.-based racing ever since Toyota last summer ended its historic 44-year association with the event. That relationship began with Long Beachâs first-ever Grand Prix weekend, in 1975, when its main event was a Formula 5000 race and Toyota supplied the pace carâbeginning an uninterrupted association that Grand Prix officials say was the longest such run in all of sports, not just professional racing. Long Beach in 1976 became a part of the Formula 1 World Championship, and Toyota became its title sponsor ahead of the 1980 installment.
youtube
Acura officials told Automobile the new partnership is a no-brainer, as the Honda subsidiary continues to push its âPrecision Crafted Performanceâ marketing message in an effort to evolve the marqueâs imageâan image that hasnât always been clear and focused in the U.S. marketplace. In the past few years Acura has launched an all-new NSX sports car that has since raced and won in the GT3 category, and last year the company in association with Team Penske launched a two-car Daytona Prototype international (DPi) effort in the IMSA WeatherTech series with its ORECA-based ARX-05. Coincidentally convenient in light of Tuesdayâs news, the ARX-05 last season claimed its first-ever IMSA pole position in Long Beach, before it subsequently scored its inaugural series win at Mid-Ohio.
âThis was the next step up for us, to have a tier 1 event like Long Beach,â said Jon Ikeda, Acura vice president and general manager. âItâs an incredible event, the most iconic street race in America. Itâs time to reset the table and recalibrate [the weekend] with our Acura attitude. We have our [U.S. corporate] home ground in Ohio but also a huge presence in Southern California with our office here. When this opportunity came up, it just made all the sense in the world.
âFrom an Acura perspective, you notice substantial growth [in sports-car racing and in IndyCar], every year gets bigger and bigger. Honda is established in IndyCar but itâs a big part of our American culture for both Acura and Honda from a corporate perspective, [and doing something like this], itâs exactly where we need to be. If weâre going to be a performance brand, we have to have supercars and we have to go race to be real; authenticity is something [everyone] is very keen on now more than ever. Being able to say weâre a performance brand and not just a sticker on a race car, and that we really embrace what we say we are, is a critical component of being real with our consumers. Weâre committed, and youâre starting to see how were playing out our hand as we grow the Acura machine.â
Ikeda said Acura in year one of the deal is mostly âjust happy to be here,â but the company already imagines taking advantage of not just the racing action in Long Beach and the hard-core fans it attracts, but also other components, such as the concerts, to reach a broader demographic.
One big question race fans and automotive enthusiasts in general likely have: Will Acura relaunch the Pro/Celebrity Race that was such a fixture of the Long Beach weekend between 1977 and 2016?
âWeâll see what the future holds for all kinds of new things, but [the Pro/Celebrity Race] was a big part of it in the past, so it is an interesting idea,â Ikeda said when we raised the issue. âItâs still one of 1,000 possible things at the moment, thereâs lots and lots of things we can think about doing.â
One final takeaway from Tuesdayâs announcement: In a climate that in recent years has heard plenty of whispers regarding racingâs demise as imminent, IndyCar and IMSA have received a shot in the arm in terms of corporate support as of late. IMSA now features more OEM participation than it has in years, and IndyCar announced tech company NTT as its new title sponsor at the Detroit auto show in early January. Along with what we understand to be a multimillion-dollar contract between Acura and Long Beach, Firestone on Wednesday is expected to confirm it has extended its multiyear deal to supply IndyCar with tires. In other words, in the span of several weeks, the sport has seen significant deals with new and longtime participants who are expanding their participation and investment. Thatâs a far cry from just a few years ago, when several U.S.-based racing series appeared to be on the ropes.
More recent good news for IndyCar that reflects its upward momentum in the eyes of corporate America includes a deal with Speedway as the official fuel (replacing Sunoco) and as the official convenience store, with marketing activation coming in 4,000 of its retail locations across the country; online annuity and life-insurance agency Gainbridge signing a multimillion-dollar, four-year deal as the Indianapolis 500âs presenting sponsor; and a commitment from broadcast partner NBC Sports to televise all of IndyCarâs 2019 practice sessions, qualifying sessions, and races on NBC, NBCSN, and/or the IndyCar Pass on NBC Sports Gold.
