Superspecies History: Sker Buffalo
Welcome once again to Monarch: After Dark, the digital gateway between you and the organisation dedicated to understanding and navigating this troubled new world we live in.
For today, as we return to our coverage of the wide variety of fauna on Skull Island, we take a look at a much more relaxed species; the peaceful swamp grazer, the Sker Buffalo.
(Pictured above: A curious Sker Buffalo approaches James Conrad and Slivko, circa. 1973)
Monarch Database File: Sker Buffalo
Monarch Designation: Skerry bubalis
Height: 38-45 feet
Weight: 22 tons
Species Designation: Bovidae florafauna
-----
A relatively docile sight in the otherwise hostile environments of Skull Island, the Sker Buffalo is an amphibious bovine species that shares distant ancestry with the Asian water buffalo. Due to its partially aquatic lifestyle, and its florafauna biology, the Sker Buffalo primarily resides within the lakes and river systems of Skull Island.
The Sker Buffalo has a pulmonary heart divided into four chambers, a new adaptation for its nature as florafauna. Two of these chambers are responsible for pumping blood throughout the body, while the other two distribute oxygenated chlorophyll to the plant life that grow out from the Sker Buffalo's body.
Their large horns, said to have a width equivalent to the wingspan of a Grumann OV-1 Mohawk, are impressive and deadly weapons at these creatures' disposal, should they feel threatened.
(Pictured above: Sketch of a Sker Buffalo by Stephanie Levallois, based off eyewitness descriptions from the 1973 expedition)
The Sker Buffalo's history with Monarch is rather limited, as the majority of encounters with these animals are typically brief and uneventful. One was first encountered by James Conrad's party in 1973 after Kong's attack on their helicopter escort, curiously inspecting the humans before returning to its usual routine. A second was encountered by Mason Weaver just outside of the Iwi village, trapped underneath a downed Sky Devil helicopter. While Weaver attempted to remove the chopper herself, Kong had arrived and effortlessly lifted it, allowing the wounded animal to retreat.
In 2021, a Sker Buffalo found itself pinned underneath a fallen tree during a skirmish between Kong and a flock of Psychovultures. While Kong freed the animal and used the tree as a weapon in the fight, the Sker Buffalo had been killed, supposedly by the Psychovultures.
In 2027, during his brief killing spree in the Hollow Earth, Raymond Martin used his Titan Hunter mech to bring down an exceptionally large Sker Buffalo, ordering his men to bring the animal back to his private island so it could be taxidermined. Kong intercepted and destroyed the convoy before they could move the carcass from Hollow Earth.
-----
And that's all she wrote for the Sker Buffalo! While there isn't much to report on these animals for the time being, they are one of a handful of species Monarch were able to save from extinction on Skull Island, and with populations in the Hollow Earth thriving, we hope there is much more to discover about the Sker Buffalo.
Until next time,
Monarch: After Dark

You may think the world is Silent on this attempt at Genocide. We are not. The problem is, The Racist World leaders who can end this Terror instanly by at least a UN vote refuse to do so.
The major weapons manufacterers (Genaral Dynamic, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumann , GE, Eaton and others) who have half of the US government in thier pockets are profiting from record sales.
We are close to another major conflict in the Middle East, because Arab Nations now see that Israel has plans to expand even further after eliminating Palestine. Be forewarned!!
Over 100 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7th.

What makes this book so good is that most of it is just stories of a rocket company following the Haywood Algorithm. For instance: when SpaceX is preparing to move their Falcon 9 rocket from its test stand to the launch site for the very first time, they hire “the second largest crane in Texas” to first stack the pieces of the rocket on top of each other, and then lower them onto a waiting trailer. Halfway through the operation, they realize it won’t work because of the wind and that they’ll have to assemble them on the ground. But the piece currently dangling from the crane and blowing like a sail in the wind isn’t designed to bear its own weight, so they literally can’t put it down. The guy in charge of the operation joined the company a few weeks ago as a rocket engineer in California, and he is now watching the future of the company dangling in front of him from the second largest crane in Texas. Darkness is falling. What does he do? He does what he has to do: calls a few dozen welders to come the next morning, then stays up all night designing a custom “cradle” that the rocket can be lowered into while anxiously watching to make sure the crane doesn’t start leaking hydraulic fluid. He notes: “At Northrop [Grumann], building a custom cradle would have become its own mini-program with design reviews, taking months to build rather than hours.” Once the rocket is down, they need to move it. To Florida. NASA and other rocket makers generally move their rockets by sea, but that’s slow and expensive. SpaceX doesn’t like to do things that are slow and expensive, so they decide to drive it there. Unfortunately, when lying down on its cradle, the rocket can’t fit under a standard freeway overpass. This is the point at which, if you did not follow the Haywood Algorithm, you would rent a barge and allow the rocket to arrive a few months late. But SpaceX always acts as if any delay at all will kill the company, so they instead set off on “the road trip from hell,” finding an absurd and tortuous route down backroads from Texas to Florida. Their route has no overpasses, but it does have power lines and traffic lights. So some of the world’s best rocket scientists drive in front of the trailer with a flexible, 17-foot pole taped to the bumper of their car. Whenever it hits something, they jump out, use large sticks to lift the power line enough that the rocket can pass under, then jump back in their car and drive off the road and around the rocket (it’s too wide to pass) so they can intercept the next obstacle. The average speed of the trip is 10mph, and they drive continuously through the night, sleeping in shifts when they’re able to. They have a hard deadline of 5pm on November 24th, because Florida closes its roads to oversized loads for a week around Thanksgiving, and they roll into Cape Canaveral on November 24th, at 3:21pm, after ten days of continuous driving.
(The book in question is Reentry)

Rereading the manga, I think my favorite thing ever is that Edward looks like he’s a feral animal Mustang just kinda found out back one day. He looks like if he bites you you’re going to get a disease, and he looks like he absolutely would bite a person. They really toned down how feral he is in Brotherhood.
Brotherhood Ed is like some poor cat you found in the alley, Manga Ed is the rabid raccoon you’ve been trying to pull put of your trash since 2013 that Will Not Leave
Like look at him and tell me he doesn’t remind you of some raccoon

I love hearing your takes on royai! Have you ever thought about how different folks in FMA view the relationship between Riza and Roy? There's sure to be rumors floating around the workplace.
A secret relationship is pretty spicy and they definitely should keep it under wraps. Anti-frat rules exist both in and outside the military for a really good reason. It would cause a big scandal if people knew. Because outsiders will see it as abuse of power and non-consensual or as sleeping with the boss for promotions and corruption.
But I like the idea of it being somewhat of an open secret, and they just simply get away with it. Like, nobody would be surprised to find out, everybody knows they are closer than they should be. But there is also no 100% proof so it's a bit rude to assume. The rumors range from ‘no way!’ to ‘obviously they smash’. I also like the idea of them sometimes (rare) doing casually intimate things openly that could be interpreted as innocent too, like standing way too close, adjusting each other's uniform or brushing a hair away or something lol.
Also, both Mustang and Hawkeye are highly and uniquely skilled and not easily replaced, the military is better off keeping them relatively relaxed and on their side- especially Mustang since he is so dangerous. As long as they behave themselves and do their job, they are left alone. The villains even exploit their relationship as a weakness all the time. It's useful for them that Mustang and Hawkeye are too close and have them believe they are safe about it. And their other boss is Hawkeye's grandpa, while Mustang is his favourite subordinate. He wants them to get married...
#ask#royai#postcanon some soldier will be like 'i saw general mustang holding hands with his adjutant in the hallway!!'#grumann not even looking up be like 'okay and? good for them'

I distinctly remember the first time I found out about Marvel x Northrop Grumann in 2017 in a comic shop looking at a weekly issue of spiderman or something, one of the big titles.
I flipped through a couple pages to see what it looked like and was surprised at how many adverts Marvel could fit in their comics, because I had spent a long time reading exclusively trade paperbacks. They had to create the stories in 22 pages with breaks at mandated intervals where the bosses know ads will do the most damage, and I finally realised that all the weird extra page spacing that happens in all the TPB collections of weekly or bi-weekly Marvel comics I'd been reading over the years was a workaround from where the ads had been removed. I realised that the adverts in these comics hold so much power over the art that you can feel their absence even when you don't know they exist.
I flipped to the big deal prime-time full page advertising spot (page 7 probably?) and saw this:
This advert is very sneaky and works very hard to hide how offensive and manipulative it is, so here's a quick analysis of a little bit of what's going on here:
The art on the left is in Marvel's house style, so the leading half of the page is camouflaged in a fully plausible establishing shot, almost identical to ones that Marvel readers will have seen many times before;
The page is split into two panels to hide inside the 4th wall of the guttering outside where adverts typically belong, in order to sneak past your senses until you catch on - that's a lot of time to leave a misleading first impression on an unaware target;
The "dream/reality" tagline sounds suitably sci-fi that it could genuinely be an advert for some upcoming comic your might want to know about or even just an unusual part of the issue. All until you realise you're looking at an advert.
There's a lot more going on here too. Every choice is meticulous and effective. The entire thing is designed to sneak by your defenses, make an association in your brain, prepare you to notice it's an ad at just the right time and finally, when you think you've moved on and forgotten it, the name Northrop Grumann has been freshly branded in a fuzzy cloud of concepts like "tony stark", "good guys", "heroes", "progress" & the promise that they have the power to "make your dreams a reality". Like superheroes, but in real life! Wow, these Northrop Grumann guys must really be something!
They held the majority of advertising slots in this issue. At the time I had no idea that Marvel was also planning a promotional propaganda crossover comic with Northrop Grumman board-designed superheroes, all with the goal of Northrop Grumann purchasing the valor of Marvel's dominant cultural mythology by directly associating their brand with Marvel's world famous characters. The Avengers came out in 2012. This was 2017. A hell of a lot of money exchanged hands to make this happen.
This advert is the evidence of a deal made between some of the most objectionable people on the planet in order to manipulate Marvel audiences and advance their political power. It is propaganda for the military industrial complex targeted at a large audience that notably includes children - but this was all years ago in 2017 (I even vaguely remember the uproar about it), and Marvel is owned by Disney now - and that's a good wholesome company that would definitely never want anything to do with making propaganda!
Oh.
2023 marvel villain: my name is Blüdlibbel..... when i was a child the Marvel Avengers® invaded my home country as part of an international coalition, waging a destructive war of conquest that my people still have not recovered from - the missiles fired from that disgusting billionaire's suit killed my brothers and my sister, 'military aged males' collecting fruit from our tree, under the stump of which we buried a cenotaph, their bodies eviscerated beyond recognition. tortured in a military prison camp, i vowed i would right these wrongs... but also, i'm misogynistic to Woman Superhero, and I just bombed the Raytheon®-sponsored Orphanage
