Playing the Pikmin 4 demo and. Y'know, when they first revealed Oatchi in the trailer, I was kinda like, oh, weird bulborb dog, that's... huh.

But he's really grown on me, especially after seeing him in action. Love this weird dog, he's a good boy.

As Telperion's flowers bloomed, Oromë Lord of the Hunt summoned his immortal Hunters to a meeting. After dealing with some business of an imbalance of deer in the eastern woods, and the regular dispute between the shrikes and everybody else, he declared, "I seek a volunteer. Young Tyelkormo of the House of Finwë shows great promise, such that one day he may join your ranks - but he is well-named; he is impetuous in all things. Will someone run beside him with wisdom and care, until he has grown into a Hunter worthy of my host?"

Huan, chief among the Hounds, stepped forth.

"Would i have to speak Elvish?" he said.

"I mean, probably," said Oromë. "They call themselves the 'speakers', you know. They're all very keen on their language, and use it for almost all communication."

"Never mind, then," said Huan, and sat back down.

"You need not speak much Elvish," Oromë wheedled. "Only now and then, I expect." For his heart had been set alight at the thought of Huan and Tyelkormo Turkafinwë as a pair on the chase; indeed, he had hoped that the Wolfhound would volunteer. Huan had chosen the form of a Hound but moments after it became a functional option upon the fresh-made earth of Arda, and there was none more expert in the hunt of wolves - which Tyelkormo already showed promise at.

Huan considered the question carefully. His flesh was dog-shaped, and his heart and mind as well. The dog-speech of scent and movement and the occasional bark or growl suited him perfectly, and he rather thought it should suit anyone else just as well. But Tyelkormo did show great promise - in fact, in the few times he'd run with the Hunt so far, he'd already picked up several gestures of dog-speech, as well as slain a small wolf with a rock and his teeth! (Because he'd leapt in too soon, lost his spear, and been forced to fight hand-to-hand, a very poor position for a thin-skinned, petty-clawed elf.) It would be a joy to lead him as a pup and run beside him as a pack-mate.

"Thrice," he finally said - the highest number in dog-speech and so, he thought, a notable concession. "Thrice I shall speak Elvish, as I run beside Tyelkormo and guide his steps to slow as needed."

He considered a moment further, and added conscientiously. "And I shall teach him Dog, that there may be no barriers of understanding between us."

"Fantastic!" said Oromë. "Good dog, Huan. Your deeds together shall never be forgotten in Arda. Alright, next on the agenda: Yavanna has bidden me again to remind you all, again, to 'stop just standing around at the Trees and ogling my handmaidens. At least pick up a trowel...'"

it’s not that huan can’t talk; it’s that he thinks dog is a perfectly functional language for every purpose that actually matters and refuses to speak anything else unless he absolutely has to
