SAR HI! so i finally managed to finish mexican gothic and dang that was one hella weird book 😭 like ???

im gonna rate this 2.5/3 out of 5 because it just wasn't my cup of tea. it was really slow and like took ages to get the the point and actual plot. i felt they were repeating alot and it just got dragged alot which i hate, i dislike slow paced stuff ugh. and it doesn't pick up until the middle which is kinda annoying bc i was just reading and reading having no idea what's going on or what's supposed to be happening lol. i didnt like most of the characters either and i just skim read the half the book i could not take it anymore 😭 but like when everything was finally revealed like wth it was weird and idk what i expected honestly 😭😭 but yeah i didn't enjoy mexcian gothic so much.

BUT that’s so disappointing 🙁 i hate that sm, im sorry u didn’t like it!! i hate the slow books :/ (unless it’s slowburn romance 🤭) thats kinda how i felt with this book i read called milk fed?? it was just droning on and on and i just wanted it to end,,, and i was so excited to read it bc the topics in the book seemed like important ones to explore but the main character was annoying, the plot build up was annoying, the entire thing was just… so bad.

IF U NEED A CUTE READ, read forget me not by julie soto 🥰(sunshine wedding planner x grumpy florist + enemies to lovers + second chance) i recommend this book to everybody bc it’s my fav romance ive read this year,,, or maybe try love and other words by christina lauren since fall time is coming up (childhood friends to lovers + second chance….fair warning, this one made me cry) BUT OBVIOUSLY U DONT HAVE TO READ THESE, im just throwing out suggestions 🫣

so like,,, tell me why i finished both the first and second book… i think i already told u abt the first book?? about how i gave it 2.7 stars bc i fucking hated the plot and the third act and the ending … but skye…. THE SECOND ONE… OH MY FUCKING GOD. I KNOW IT’S CRINGE AND PREDICTABLE AND NOT REALLY THAT GOOD, but this book had me kicking my feet and giggling over EVERYTHING… the slow burn… was so good… OMFG i literally hate that i loved it sm like cant keep succumbing to booktok. but yeah, ngl i was blushing the entire time T-T it was sooo long tho. the slowburn was slow as fuck, like i dont think it started picking up till halfway through the book ?? but i think i just discovered that i REALLY like the forbidden romance trope 🫡

so i was telling my coworker and all my friends on goodreads that i needed to take a break from the series bc i felt like i was losing brain cells, but…

so here i am, 40% done with twisted hate. i am not the biggest e2l fan but ,,,, i kinda like this. i dont think it’ll be as good as the second one… but i will keep you updated 🫡 i’ll probably be done with the entire series by this weekend 😭 so sick…

book that pleasantly surprised you: the house by christina lauren. for a YA book that i bought purely bc im a slut for weird haunted houses, its super good. i looooved how they wrote the haunting and the two main characters were freak4freak and i adored them. very good story and the prose wasnt bad for YA like it wasnt dumbed down at all

book that disappointed you: THE BOOK OF REVELATION BY RUPERT THOMSON!!!!!!!! its about a guy that gets kidnapped and assaulted by three women and then has to like, learn how to live post trauma which sounded very promising and the reviews are all good but the book was pure GARBAGE. like i dont think one has to be a trauma survivor to write about trauma however it was so obvious that this man had no idea what he was writing about. the way the main character was written was so unrealistic and just. i hated so much of this book. i did enjoy some plot points and the prose wasnt badly done, but god all the traumatizing scenes were written in a way that gave the impression that the author really just has a humiliation and pain fetish, and NOT in a cool bataille way. it was bad. so so so bad. only kept reading for the small glimmers of interesting plot and bc i had to know how it ended

MID YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG

I was thinking about doing a mid year book update and I’ve been mulling over just how to do it the last few days, but @booksandlala on YouTube just uploaded a video doing this so...here we go!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2019. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid! This was one of those books that I’d seen EVERYWHERE and I just knew the hype was just not right. I didn’t think it was as good as people made it out to be but boy was I wrong! I flew threw this book in like two days and immediately wanted to reread it when I was done!

 2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2019. The Bride Test by Helen Hoang. I'm not sure if this even counts since it’s not really a sequel sequel and it just lives in the same world, but I’m counting it! I was nervous that I wouldn’t like this as much as The Kiss Quotient but I did and now  Helen Hoang is officially an auto-buy author for me.

3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to. The Storyteller by Traci Chee. It’s the last book in the trilogy and I just...I dunno. I’m kinda nervous to finish it. It’s been awhile since I read The Speaker and I’m worried I don’t remember anything and I won’t enjoy it as much.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.  DARKDAWN BY JAY KRISTOFF!!!! I am DYING to read this and I swear to god I’m even thinking of taking a day or two off of work so I can truly delve into the book and not suffer sleep deprivation while working lol

5. Biggest disappointment. Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor. Now, I rated this book 4 stars so it wasn’t bad at all! I just...I didn’t find myself loving it the entire time like I have with Laini’s other books and for me that was really disappointing. 

6. Biggest surprise. The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. Again, I gave into book peer pressure and checked this honker out from the library because of all the hype. I haven’t read a high fantasy like this in YEARS (mostly because I was tired of the same schtick) and lemme tell ya, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn’t feel like it took me forever to read! 

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you) Christina Lauren! I’ve read all their standalone novels that have been released after having read my first book of theirs earlier this year. They are so AWESOME and have been a great doorway back into the adult romance genre for me. They’re just so much fun to read! And, y’know, the sex is great if that’s your thing!

8. Newest fictional crush. Josh Im from Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating. HE IS JUST SO PRECIOUS AND CUTE!

9. Newest favourite character. Harper from A Curse so Dark and Lovely. SHE IS A BADASS! And not necessarily in the way that most people tend to associate badassness with. She’s smart, funny, understanding, kind, stubborn, and just...badass!

10. Book that made you cry. None so far. I’m not much of a crier, tbh.

11. Book that made you happy. The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren. I laughed SO MUCH while reading this book! And not just little chuckles or breath huffs, I’m talking full on belly laughs here. This book was hilarious and left me feeling super happy at the end. 

12. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received) The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad is easily the most beautiful book that I’ve bought this year. The cover is just absolutely gorgeous!

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year? All of them? lolol Honestly, I’d love to read all of them but that’s not feasible at all. Ideally, I really want to read all the series completers by the end of the year. I have a few on there right now that I really want to get to. I need to read the LOTR trilogy because if I don’t this year, I don’t think I will any year and that means I need to unhaul the bind up I have because I don’t need to keep hanging onto it.
