Gobliins 2 – Meatballs of Happiness
By Ilmari
Last time I got the impression I would start this section instantly from the throne room. Alas, my journey from the subterranean sea ended somewhere else.
In the kitchen
Still, throne room wasn’t far away, so let’s move there for a while.
Note the pepper pot, it will become handy later
Movementwise, there was an interesting trick in the throne room. Usually the exits of a screen have been pretty much fixed. Not here. Whenever my goblins were at the right side of the screen, the exit list showed the kitchen. Then again, I could move the goblins through the various secret passageways to the left side of the screen (and no, moving in front of the eyes of the demons wasn’t an option), where instead of kitchen the list of exits showed another room (we’ll get back to that later).
On the throne room sat the evil demon Amoniak, and to the left of him was the Prince Buffoon I was here to rescue. But the demon lackey was interestingly called a lover of meatballs. Say, didn’t I just see a big pile of those?
Indeed, in the kitchen, a servant was preparing them. He would put them through the window, one by one, suggesting he was feeding the demon lackey. I had been carrying a bottle of kindness elixir for a while now, and my suspicion was that I could spice the meatballs with it. In fact, when I tried to do it, goblins told me that the idea was good but they were afraid it would spill and the cook would throw the spiced meatballs away.
Checking the kitchen a bit more, I found out that pressing the eye of the swordfish would contort the fish, which would hit the goblin, who would fly to the salt shaker, which would drop to a position where it could be taken (remarkable cause-effect chains). Now, I could spice the meatballs with salt, and the cook would be reprimanded for oversalting.
Like this
For the couple of seconds cook wasn’t sitting, I could interact with the case he was sitting on. What could I do with it? Well, I began by adding some salt in the big pot. Someone was apparently using it as a bath and was glad that we had put some bath salt in it. As a token of gratitude, I received a file, which could be used for releasing bird.
Although not from its cage
With the cage gone, I could move forward on the shelf and take some thumb tacks. Obviously, these were the things I could put on the case, while cook was being disciplined. When the cook sat on them, he lost the grip on the meatball he had been holding.
Poor cook should have stayed in bed today
This was a most frustrating sequence. Clearly I had to use the elixir with the meatball while it was flying. Problem was that time was so short and the spot I had to click was so small. Worst of it was that I had to do the whole salt-the-meatballs-wait-quickly-apply-the-thumb-tacks routine again, every time I failed in spicing the meatball. After dozens of failed attempts (and agony experienced by the cook), I finally managed to pull it off. Next time I entered the throne room, Amoniak’s lackey was having a silly grin on his face
One down, two to go
My next target was Amoniak’s demon dog that was said to eat cockroaches. This wasn’t as intuitive a problem to solve as the one with the meatballs, but involved more of random experimentation. I noticed that if Fingus entered the ear of the demon throne and Winkle at the same time pulled at the tongue of a statue on the left, the left eye of the demon throne would open and Fingus would automatically manipulate the right eye, releasing a cockroach, which would walk toward the dog and be eaten after few seconds (yep, a bit random). The trick was to quickly take the cockroach through one of those magic holes and then to use some elixir on it.
The room at the other side of the throne room
Only one to go! Demon king Amoniak was dealt with a very similar manner as his underlings, that is, by mixing some kindness elixir into his food. I found a painter who told me that Amoniak ate only ladybugs. Since I knew where to get cockroaches, I tried painting one of them with red paint from the painter and adding some black spots from a pepper pot. It apparently was enough to fool Amoniak.
And then we were three
The game wasn’t over yet. I still had to escape the castle, but I had no idea how to do it. After a while, I met the real king of the castle, locked inside his armour, hanging from a rope.
He’s smaller than I expected
Amoniak had turned the king to a small child, and only his crown could turn him back to normal. I had already stolen from Amoniak this crown (one of the goblins could snatch it, while entering the head of the demon throne), which I now gave to the king. The castle scientist noticed this and went to find some help to release the king. With the scientist left, I could tinker with one of his machines.
Honey, I shrank the gobliins!
Finding myself on a desk (what desk actually is this?), I immediately noticed a box with a lock of a shape similar to one one on a seal. Should I use the seal to make an impression from the wax of the nearby candle and use it to open the box? If so, how could I get the wax?
Checking the other items, I noticed a pen knife that one goblin could lift for a couple of minutes. Using the other goblin on the knife during those few minutes moved the knife a few millimetres nearer to a book. Doing that couple of times brought the knife close enough to the book that I could cut from it a piece of the bookmark, which I could use as a wick of the candle.
What next? I picked up a match and used it to pry one glass eye from decorative skull. I tested what each goblin would do with the ball. They all kicked it, but Prince Buffoon particularly managed to break a piece from glasses with it. There was a conspicuous beam of sunlight coming from a window and hitting the candle. Using the piece of glass with that beam, the wick started to burn and a piece of wax dropped from the candle.
Just like I thought, I could shape the wax with the seal and the use this impression to open the box. Inside, I found some beans. Playing around with them for a while, I finally tried to use them on the map. To my surprise, the seed started to sprout a beanstalk – in the map. Without further ado, I entered the map.
I am getting confused. Was it a magic map? Did it teleport me somewhere? If so, did I just create a huge beanstalk here?
It was definitely a silly ending, but just right what to expect from this game. And it wasn’t the end, but only an end – the game still continues. What more lies ahead of me, now that I rescued the prince? We’ll find that out next week.
But before ending completely, let me advertise a new feature of our blog. Our readers occasionally note that some noteworthy game is missing from our official list. We have been playing such missing games as Missed Classics, but there has been no way for our readers to suggest what to play as a Missed Classic. We admins decided it should be time to change this. Just for this reason, we’ve set up a simple spreadsheet (you can find the link also on the left column), where you can add your suggestion. We are still not sure how we will add your suggestions to our Missed Classic schedules, but we are working on it.

Gobliins 2 – Floating castle
By Ilmari
I am probably overthinking it, but I have a hard time understanding the geography of the game. The world outside the castle shows no sign of a sea nearby. Still, under the castle is what the manual calls a sea passage. In fact, it is so big a passage that it holds a sunken boat and a mermaid population. Maybe the castle and the lands surrounding it float on top of the ocean?
Or perhaps someone just built this here?
Puzzlewise the boat used a mechanic familiar from earlier parts of the game: if a goblin stood on an oyster when it opened (I’ll not go into details, but this involved lot of a seemingly unrelated actions and an eel scaring a fish into the vicinity of the oyster), the goblin would fly into the bow of the ship it couldn’t reach otherwise.
Like this
On the bow, there was a platform, and when the figurehead of the boat was manipulated, the goblin on the platform would fly toward a dark corner described by the game as ???. Here another part of the boat was helpful. I could light the lantern on the aft of the ship to attract a fish with a lamp, which I could then use to light up the dark corner, revealing a treasure chest. Unfortunately, neither of the goblins had the strength to open it. Time to move to a new screen.
The merfolk
The most important part of this screen were the stairs at the middle that led to a passage going to the castle throne room. The problem was that a) the passage was barred and b) an octopus wouldn’t let me move past it. Time to check other parts of the screen.
Using my trusty stool, I could mount the seahorse, who would take me to the platform at the upper left corner of the screen. Here, a goblin could speak with the mermaid queen, whose eyes were taken by the demon king Amoniak who had conquered the castle. At the uppermost ledge, there was a bottle I couldn’t reach.
Because of a tentacle monster
I could also try to enter a cavern, only to be driven away by the owner of the cavern – a small octopus. The octopus was followed by a…
…glove?
I could catch the glove with a seashell. Within the glove I found a starfish. It took me a while to figure it out, but I eventually learned it was strong enough to help me with treasure chest at the previous screen. My reward was a sword, which I could use to pry a diamond from a skull attached to boat.
The glove itself proved also to be useful, since I could use it to cover the tentacled monster. Thus, I finally had an access to the bottle, which contained a pearl and a parchment from the Prince Buffoon, asking someone to save him from the clutches of Amoniak. The emerald, together with the diamond, were meant as new eyes for the queen, who thanked me by removing the bars from the passage. Octopus, on the other hand, wanted to see the parchment to be convinced of my good intentions.
The ocean section has felt a bit of a detour in the overall course of the game. It seems like the producers wanted to include a marine themed portion into a game, no matter what. I am hoping the game speeds up a bit, now that I am stepping into the throne room.

Gobliins 2 – Magic Mushrooms
By Ilmari
Last time, I had just arrived at the castle, where the titular Prince Buffoon was held as a prisoner by demons. My first task was to get rid of a guard in front of the entrance. Luckily a nearby tower held important provisions.
Bombs!
My my, he’s gone to pieces
Unfortunately, another guard was waiting in the dark doorway, so I still couldn’t enter. The manual had mentioned that the best way to infiltrate the castle was a sea passage under it, so perhaps I had tried a wrong approach.
Wise man Soka was meditating on castle grounds. I couldn’t yet talk to him, but needed a carpet to fly where Soka was levitating. There was one carpet on the screen, and I just had to use a few bombs to make it fly to where my goblins were. Now I could fly and learn what Soka had to say – I had to find some sand of time and throw it to trenches.
Fingus, that’s a serious case of #nymphtoo!
Winkle, are you sure you want to use that word?
I had two other screens to choose from. First, I came to a room, where resided Kael, a walking apple-tree, whom the demon king had cursed to be always thirsty. I gave him some water from my bottle and asked his advice.
Kael told me that I should try to enter the home of Vivalzart, music-mad heron who looked for mushrooms to help his insomnia – you can see his house at the upper left corner of the screen. Kael added that the small nymph could help me to find the proper mushroom. My task was thus clear.
I started by reviving the nymph with some water, and she flew to a branch of one of the trees. I could follow her, by taking a ride with a bee, which was hiding in a hole under one of the rocks.
To bee or not to bee
What to do with the nymph then? Well, Kael and the bee were both helpful with this. Kael would lift me to one of his branches, where I could pick a flower. The bee, on the other hand, could make some honey from that flower. I just had to take care Winkle wouldn’t touch the honey, because he would eat it all, and let Fingus deliver this gift to the nymph, who would then point me to the correct mushroom to give to Vivalzart.
I wonder whether that vulture is Vivalzart’s son or pet
Once inside Vivalzart’s home, he urged me to put the mushroom in his musical dream machine and taste the product. Problem was that the machine was blocked by a clothes pin, which was so high I couldn’t reach it. I started solving this problem with the most reliable method in this game – poke everything and see what happens. Here’s a can of worms – let’s take one. Here’s a piranha – don’t put your finger into its bowl. Here’s a button and when I push it, this platform rises for a while – so, let’s try to put another goblin on the platform and…
…he almost grabs a piece of meat from the vulture. Almost
This sequence was a bit frustrating, since there’s so little time to try anything, when a goblin is hanging from the piece of meat. Eventually, I lucked out and the vulture was distracted enough by a worm, so that I managed to grab the meat. Who might want some meat? Perhaps the piranha who just tried to bite my finger off? Indeed it wanted, leaving me with a bone to pick.
What to do with the bone then? Well, in another round of trying everything I gave the bone to Vivalzart who opened a trashcan and dropped the bone in there. Believe it or not, one of the goblins could take advantage of this and the opening lid of the trashcan would catapult him onto the shelf. There, I could remove the clothes pin and also take a bottle of elixir. Now I could turn the machine on again and drink the droplets it produced.
Taking a little trip
Vivalzart’s mushroom potion had taken me into a musical mushroom land. It wasn’t at first clear what I was trying to do here, but the goblins were asking the band members to play some tunes, so apparently that was my task.
Even more so than before, the screen was filled with all sorts of weird shenanigans. Put-goblin’s-hand-in-a-hole-and-see-it-coming-out-somewhere-else was by now a familiar sight, and this time it rewarded me with a drumstick, which together with a stocking cap produced a net. There was also a spring, where one goblin jumping created for a few seconds a bicycle pump, which the other goblin had to grab through the same hole. When both of the goblins jumped on the same spring, it opened another hole, which a goblin could use to get on top of the smiling mushroom.
No more goblins jumping on a spring
The smiling mushroom was just a few steps away from the guitarist, but the way was blocked by a blue hose, which sprouted water on a goblin if he took a step too close the musician. Luckily, I had just the thing to stop the flow of the water – the clothes pin. Once I got to talk with the guitarist, he was happy to play me one of his tunes. This produced a bunch of notes I could interact with for a couple of seconds, and using my net, I could capture them.
I was clearly meant to get notes from the saxophonist and drummer also. Saxophonist did not reply anything when I tried to ask him to play. Instead, Fingus could use the bicycle pump to blow some notes out of his saxophone.
The drummer was too high to talk to. Luckily, when Winkle used the pump on the saxophonist, the man blew out a mosquito. By putting the mosquito through the many-timed used hole, I could get it near the drummer, who started to flail his drum stick, trying to hit the mosquito and at the same time producing notes. I now owned a whole melody.
Basketball + player = ?
After this short side trip I returned to the regular world. My next destination was this village of tree houses. The player did not want to speak with me, and the ball was just a tad too far away. Throwing my trusty stone on the ball moved it to a more accessible place, but then a small kid appeared and took the ball inside to one of the houses. The kid moved to a new house, when I tried to capture him, but eventually I could corner him by moving in from two fronts.
When I gave the ball to the player, he threw it in a basket and the ball returned to me. Maybe I had to do something with the ball, while it was flying into the basket? I put one of the goblins under the basket, and just as the ball was entering the basket, the goblin jumped and the ball bounced to one of the houses, and its resident, the mayor of the village, came out.
Mayor advised me to knock on the door on the upper right corner, which housed the village clock maker, Tom. We asked Tom for an hourglass, but he first asked us to replace the tock of village clock with a melody. I just happened to have one, so I quickly got myself an hourglass. The hourglass contained the sands of time I needed for getting within the castle walls.
I see the line in the sand
Next step of the quest
After walking on a bridge of sand and sneaking in through a window, I met a blacksmith, who told me I should get an imprint of a lock on a chest with carved fish, so that he could make a key for the chest. This seems a good place to stop.

Game 114: Gobliins 2: The Prince Buffoon (1993) – Introduction
By Ilmari
That’s pretty big guarantee! Could I play the game to completion, come to the conclusion that some small detail didn’t satisfy me and get a new game?
What a better way to begin a new year of gaming, but with – not one, but – two Coktel Vision games. Alfred has for a while been playing Ween: The Prophecy, and now I get to continue the saga of Gobliiins Nothing much seems to have changed in the development team. The creative force behind the game is still Pierre Gelhodes, while Muriel Tramis had only the ephemeral position of project manager for the game. Other people from the team were experienced Coktel Vision workers.
Indeed, when I started the intro of the game, a feeling of familiarity came over me. The music and the graphical style were very familiar from the first game, as were the visual gags and the whole comedic style.
The plot of the game, as described by the manual, begins with a familiar note: king has become berserk!
I just love the look on the king’s face
This time, it’s not a voodoo doll that’s behind it, but a demon Amoniak, who has stolen king’s only son, because king Angoulafre defeated him in a battle fifty years ago. King asks the assistance of Modemus, the magician, who then sends the two heroes of the game to a village near a castle that the evil demon has conquered.
I mentioned there are two heroes, which is also reflected in the number of Is in the title of the game. The three heroes of the first game had their own distinct abilities – we had a magician, a strongman and a handyman. Here, the two characters – Fingus and Winkle – don’t have different abilities, but different attitudes, one being straight man, the other a trickster. I don’t yet understand how that will work puzzlewise, but it sounds interesting.
I gave the first game of the series the score of 48. I enjoyed the humour, but the game also had its flaws, which were mainly due to cumbersome interface choices, such as an energy meter, sections limited to one screen and a lack of a proper save feature. I won’t yet go into the interface of this game, but the manual appears to promise that some of these flaws have been fixed. Furthermore, judging by the intro, the comedic elements still manage to put a smile on my face. Take that into account as you wish, when you guess the score of this game. Personally, I am already a bit excited.
Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: There’s a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no CAPs will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of me requiring one. As this is an introduction post, it’s an opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that I won’t be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return. It’s also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it. All correct (or nearest) votes will go into a draw.
