Purchasing a Home in Another State
Tumblr media
Retired NYPD lieutenant Gustavo L. Vila serves as the president of GLV Properties, LLC, and a licensed real estate broker and Certified Homeownership Professional (CHP) for William Raveis Real Estate in Yorktown Heights, New York. As such a broker and CHP, Gustavo L. Vila assists clients both within and outside of New York with home sales and purchases. The process of buying a house out of state begins with finding a qualified real estate agent. This can be accomplished by asking for referrals from co-workers, family, or a relocation company. By identifying a good real estate agent, you may have an easier time locating homes that fit your needs, figuring out your ideal neighborhoods, or determining a realistic timeline for when you will be moving. Once you have a good real estate agent, you can focus on getting a loan and touring possible homes. Getting a home loan in another state may be more difficult than you initially thought, so you will be glad you started the process early. Make sure you provide lenders with all of the documentation they need and try to wait on making major purchases until after you’ve closed on your new home. Meanwhile, touring possible houses can be accomplished through either online tours or quick trips to the area to which you want to relocate. Online listings are a great resource for narrowing down your options, but you will not be able to get a true feel for the neighborhood or house without being there. If you’re able to, schedule a date to visit your new city and have your real estate agent show you multiple properties.

Tumblr media
Retired New York City police lieutenant Gustavo L. Vila is the founding partner of the firm Gustavo L. Vila, Attorney, and president of property management company GLV Properties, LLC. A long time resident of New York City, he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. The FBI National Academy is a 10 week professional program conducted at the agency’s campus in Quantico, Virginia. Admission is through a nomination process and by invitation only. Nominated by their agency heads, attendees are local and international law enforcement administrators who have proven leadership qualities. Coursework includes management science, intelligence theory, law, forensic science, behavioral science, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, and law enforcement communication. The aim of the program is to improve the delivery of justice and elevate law enforcement standards, cooperation, and knowledge throughout the world. The final physical test of the program is known as the Yellow Brick Road, a demanding 6.1-mile run across a rolling, wooded trail featuring wall climbs, window jumps, rock scaling, and muddy water with low-lying barbed wire. The course was constructed by the Marines, who placed yellow bricks around the route as guides. Those who complete the course are given an actual yellow brick to mark their achievement.
