[Week 3] Semiotics

Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols, has a large influence on design principles and aesthetics and using these signs and symbols helps to communicate messages more effectively, making them clearer and more impactful.

Firstly, semiotics shapes our understanding of the world.

For example, one of his short stories “Signs and Symbols”.

By examining the use of semiotics in his works, we can gain a deeper understanding of the power of symbols and signs in shaping our understanding of the world. As we continue to explore the realm of semiotics, we can gain a greater appreciation for the intricate web of signs and symbols that shape our understanding of the world around us.

Secondly, semiotics plays a crucial role in shaping and reflecting cultural values, norms, and identities.

This shows how symbols and signs can change due to different cultures and contexts. Semiotics can be a powerful, universal language, but implementing this principle into a design process involves mindfulness and sensitivity to cultural diversity and design ethics.

In one of my design projects, I applied semiotics when creating a logo for a music festival. Drawing inspiration from musical notes and their dynamic strokes, I crafted a logo that embodies the vibrant energy and passion of the event.

Additionally, globalisation influences the semiotics we see.

This demonstrates how symbols evolve over time as they are influenced by various cultures. In conclusion, we can obtain a deeper interpretation of visual aesthetics through semiotic analysis.

The occupational therapy profession guide towards the dismantling injustices.

The World Federation of Occupational Therapists estimates that there are around 633,000 OTs worldwide (Wabwille, 2023). Occupational therapy is one profession that has become very much popular over recent years Garcia Ruiz (2017) it is emphasizes why 'glocalized' occupational therapy is crucial by highlighting that occupational therapy professionals are political participants who have the capacity to change and assist in shaping the lives of those they come into contact with (Van Vureen et al., 2021).

Taking at a close reflection on the community of Kenville and Mariannridge there are considerable barriers and responsibilities for occupational therapists working in the those context (Van Vureen et al., 2021), student working at these certain placements are faced with disadvantages of having no departments to work in and they had to shift from a medical model which they are taught in university to a community-based model which has contributed to them being political participants in the lives of those they treat. However, working in these settings shows to have tremendous opportunities and prospects (Van Vureen et al., 2021). These students are able to promote the occupation of occupational therapy while practicing under a Gazebo.

This shows how broken our government system is as to not recognizing the work being done in these communities. Abson (2021) emphasizes the prolonged lack of purpose in one’s mind is more likely to lead to development of a physical or mental dysfunction and external circumstances to this injustice.

3 common challenges faced by these communities

Poverty (Low-income communities)

The World Health Organization (2006) proposed understanding poverty through its characteristics, such as a lack of access to education, care, and employment. Poor people frequently face more environmental and personal health risks, have less access to medical services, and have fewer options when it comes to their way of life. Additionally, they are more vulnerable to be the targets of prejudice, mistreatment, and extortion (WHO, 2023). Occupational therapists play a crucial role in helping people find fulfilling work that will enhance their health and quality of life, but the environment can have an impact on how they conduct their work. Occupational therapists in African contexts must concentrate on families, communities, and collaborative occupations in addition to the individual client.

Occupational therapists ought to look into commonly accepted principles such as 'Ubuntu' to promote inclusion, dignity, and respect for persons with impairments in African settings.

Another idea is to convince OTs to adopt a population-based approach rather than concentrating just on individuals. This is because many African cultures value strong familial and societal networks and solidarity (Van Vureen et al., 2021). For example, in cases of child poverty and malnutrition, therapists would need to take the needs of the entire family into account in addition to those of the individual child.

Education is a key component in motivating people; in South Africa, for instance, caregivers are given education to encourage understanding and acceptance of children with impairments (Van Vureen et al., 2021). while also lessening stigma and isolation for those experiencing discrimination, including the LGBTQI+ community, those living with HIV, and children with disabilities.

Occupational therapists in other countries have promoted the use of social support systems, means of generating revenue, and caregiver education.

Teaching community workers about health promotion, rehabilitation, and job moving is a crucial function for therapists in supporting sustainable, appropriate service provision. Advocacy is underlined as an additional vital work for occupational therapists in supporting people with impairments to interact and participate in their communities (Van, Vureen et al., 2021).

According to an Occupational Therapy Australia position paper, improving awareness and uniting all communities, removing environmental barriers that prevent occupation, designing programs that enable engagement, speaking with policy makers, and promoting diversity and peace in society are the most effective strategies for occupational therapists to combat injustices (Abson, 2021).
