I guess Marta will retire after this season.

AMC and Oshoala have been rumoured to want to leave so that doesn't surprise me. Gemma is a young keeper and needs minutes so I think maybe moving would be best for her.

Not surprised about the other players they are apparently prioritising.

As for Lucy. Man I don't know. She's happy there, she loves living there and seems to have made really good friends there. It depends on if she wants less game time (which will most likely help with her knee and allow her to play for longer) and the chance to win trophies with Barca, or if she wants more game time and move to a 'lower' (ie not Barca/Lyon) club.

Or if she wants to retire at Lyon, which some people have been suggesting.

Friendship Evolves: M3GAN Review

This review is going to be a little different because I usually review the theatrical version of the movies I cover, but for todays review I’m going to be reviewing the Unrated version of M3GAN as that was the version that was going to go to theaters before it got toned down to a PG-13 rating. I’m so excited that they released this version of M3GAN so soon after making $171.2 million in the global box office. So, lets get straight to the spoiler-free review.

M3GAN is a 2023 science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone, Written by Akela Cooper (Malignant (2021)), Produced by James Wan (who also directed Malignant (2021),and Jason Blum. The soundtrack is done by Anthony Willis. The cast involves Allison Williams as Gemma, Violet McGraw as Cady, Ronny Chieng as David, Amie Donald as M3GAN, Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN, Brian Jordan Alvarez as Cole, Jen Van Epps as Tess, Stephane Garneau-Monten as Kurt, Lori Dungey as Celia, Amy Usherwood as Lydia, Jack Cassidy as Brandon, Michael Saccente as Greg, Samson Chan-Boon as Officer Carter, Kira Josephson as Ava, Renee Lyons as Holly, and Arlo Green as Ryan.

The Plot:

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as it plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate, and protector. When Gemma becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl an M3GAN prototype, a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences.

Positives:

One positive I have about the movie was the cast and the use of the character of M3GAN. An example of the use of M3GAN was the descent from a protective friend to an obsessive, psychotic, and cold-blooded killer…. who dances which had me laughing. I really liked the relationship of Cady and Gemma as they bond over time and how the bond they built pays off in the third act of the movie.

The second positive I have about the movie is how they nailed the tone; it is campy but at the same time it is scary as hell considering the technology we have now. It also discusses the dangers of technology while not being too preachy.

 The third and final positive I have about the movie is the kills as it is bloody in the unrated version while kills in the PG-13 version happened offscreen and bloodless. The kills are pretty creative whether its with a power washer or a paper cutter, the movie (Unrated version) doesn’t hold back on the blood. While it’s not as bloody as “Terrifer 2” or the “Saw” franchise, some of the scenes are horrific.

    Negatives:

The first negative I have about this movie is that I wish we spent a little bit more time with evil M3GAN. Evil M3GAN shows up at the halfway point of the movie, but that’s alright as it pays off. The second negative I have is some of the acting was questionable at some points, however it’s okay as it matches the campiness of the movie.

My overall thoughts:

After watching the unrated version of M3GAN, I believe releasing the unrated version a month after the PG-13 was released was a smart move considering the success of the PG-13 version. In saying that however, I believe this is the version that should have been released in theaters. If you are into killer doll movies or movies that deals with the dangers of artificial intelligence, then this is the movie for you. I found the movie to be really entertaining, darkly funny, and has rewatch value. I can’t wait until 2025 to see M3GAN 2.0

relatively speaking (i went to an ayckbourn play for felicity. this is true love and dedication) met felicity kendal

the national theatre masterclasses: went to penelope wilton + david hare's one, saw them (saw penelope out front beforehand!!), met penelope afterwards

also went to amelia bullmore's masterclass, along w lots of my lovely mutuals 💖; we all met her and talked to her at length

kiss me, kate: saw hannah waddingham

guys and dolls: saw sophie thompson, and phyllida law (her + emma's mother) was in the audience

a damsel in distress: saw summer strallen

mrs. pat: saw penelope keith

oklahoma!: saw josie lawrence (also saw her + paul merton at the comedy store one time)

once there was an event that a choir my mum + i used to be in were invited to sing at, and a lot of the other performers / organisers were famous people: julie graham was one of the organisers, so i saw her, alison moyet was performing (i'd already been to one of her concerts, but not met her yet), so i met her then (she hugged me!!!!) and emma kennedy was there bc she and alf are best friends so i stood near her awkwardly; and caitlin moran was also a speaker so i saw her (backstage and onstage) too; and my mum spoke to her

my mum once won tickets to see a bbc show being filmed, and it happened to be upstart crow (you don't choose what you see, you just get allocated something by the bbc people), so we were on set with david mitchell, liza tarbuck, gemma whelan

i've told the story of being caught in the fire w the new tricks actors + sarah beeny SO many times, but i will tell it again if anyone else wants to hear it

The Summer book by Tove Jansson

The Summer Book by Tove Jansson is full of humor and wisdom. It follows a summer trip between an artist grandma and her six-year-old granddaughter. On an island in the gulf of Finland they learn each others fears, whims, and yearnings. This story is the perfect heart-warming tale!

Endless Summer by Elin Hilderbrand

When I am looking for a quick read, I love to check out short story collections. The best part of them is that you can get through one or two, even three, stories in one sitting. Endless Summer is the perfect book for long-time fans and new readers as she revisits some of her most beloved characters! One such story is “The Tailgate” which revisits the story of Hilderbrand’s book The Matchmaker.

Playing with Matches by Hannah Orenstein

If you liked The Matchmaker, you need to check out Playing with Matches by Hannah Orenstein. This is the book I am currently reading, and I’m about 65% of the way through. This story is a perfect balance of eccentric clients and main character Sasha’s rollercoaster personal life. I must say, I am loving this book so far!

Gilt by Jamie Brenner

Gilt by Jamie Brenner is next up on my TBR - as I wait for it on hold at my library. In the same realm of Succession, Gilt follows the story of three sisters divided by the family diamond business. After a decade, main character Gemma is the only granddaughter and also a jewelry designer. She is working toward success for herself and the legacy of her mother who passed away. This book is perfect for lovers of family drama, with a little glitz!

Silenced in Sequins by Debra Sennefelder

Silenced in Sequins is part of a series by Debra Sennefelder, but can also be read as a stand alone. This book follows Kelly Quinn as she transforms her grandmother’s old consignment store into a hot spot for fashion lovers around town. She receives a dress that becomes the center of a public riff between two Long Island Ladies tv-show stars, when one of them ends up dead! It seems that only Kelly can get to the bottom of this and save the reputation of her store.

Fatal Inheritance by Rachel Rhys

Lovers of historical fiction must check out Fatal Inheritance, set in 1930, by Rachel Rhys. Eve, in her loveless marriage, receives a letter one day of an inheritance from a wealthy stranger. She travels to the French Rivera to the villa left just for her, but discovers a group of people that will do anything to take it from her. Before things become sinister, she needs to uncover the mystery of the letter and the person who sent it.

Going Dark by Melissa de la Cruz

Told through social media posts, diary entries, and firsthand accounts, Going Dark is a 2023 release by Melissa de la Cruz. The reader goes through the mysterious disappearance of influencer Amelia Ashley. When Ashley failed to show up her boyfriend left their romantic Rome vacation without her. Meanwhile, a hacker is untangling her social media web. Then, the reader learns of another girl who went missing two years prior - could this be a coincidence? Going Dark is the perfect read for fans of true crime to put their detective skills to use.

The Club by Ellery Lloyd

The Club written Collette Lyons, alongside her husband Paul Viltos. Island Home is a newly-launching and exclusive retreat for celebrities and a-listers. The invite list is sure to bring a group of “beautiful people with their own ugly secrets.” Yet, before the party even gets started, tensions rise between Island Home employees. The Club is a thriller sure to leave you on the edge of your seat - or edge of your beach chair.

Personality

Rachel has always been an intelligent girl. Even as a kid she was given the title of prodigy. This trait has made her incredibly resourceful and cunning. She is passionate about what she knows and what she does and nothing will stop her once she gets going but this caused her to miss out a lot when she was in college. She can sometimes seem like she has a stick up her ass but her head is usually just too focused to think of doing anything that could risk her. She has a hard time trusting people and is usually very suspicious and very paranoid of people turning against her that it usually pushes people away. She cannot stand people lying to her and tends to act aggressively if she finds out people have lied to her. She is loyal when the timing suits her but is more than happy to play the double agent if it is required, and as such is very familiar with putting on a polite and approachable demeanor when necessary.

Past

Rachel showed signs of being a genius from an early age, something her parents knew they needed to nurture as soon as possible. They put her through to a private school that could better accommodate her skill set which made her siblings very jealous of her. She was the one her parents always gushed about to their friends. She was the showing off awards and achievements. It was all well and good, but all she really wanted was to be loved by her siblings, who were jealous of the attention and praise her parents always showered on her. As a result she grew up apart from the rest of them, which hindered her social skills. It also convinced her that all she should be focused on was her studies, so she didn’t fight when her parents moved her to an elite boarding school.

At boarding school, she finally realized her sexuality and came out as bisexual. She had plenty of relationships but they never tended to last long because she would push them away and make them feel unloved - it wasn’t on purpose, she had just never spent much time learning how to show affection. That was, until she met Marcus. She once called him the love of her life. They were married soon after she finished college and even had a son a year or two later. However, shortly after her son turned 1, she landed her dream job working in a lab at a company called Murchadha, with top scientists that she idolized. She jumped at the opportunity and as a result, barely made an effort to balance her home life and work life. Things finally got to much for her husband and one day she returned from work to find him and their son gone. They argued over the phone before he finally claimed it was time to cut Rachel out of him and their son’s life. To this day she still misses her son terribly, but resents her ex husband for trying to make her choose between work and life and has used the experience as even more reason to keep her life revolving around work.

While working at Murchadha she learned about the supernatural world that lurked in the shadows, and it intrigued her from a scientific perspective but made her apprehensive from a human one. About five years ago, she was dispatched from Murchadha onto a top-secret government project. A way to make humans stronger and better. A way to help them defend themselves further against the supernatural. It was something she wanted. She wanted to be stronger. She wanted to be better. When she was to help make the serum, she wanted to be the first successful one to take it and she did. She didn’t care about the plenty of homeless men and women she used that ultimately died as lab rats.  She took the serum when she felt like the timing was right and became the first successful experiment.

Present

Once the first batch of test subjects were made, the plan was to keep monitoring them but one day, the alarm sounded. It meant the main vampire she was working on and doing all kinds of nasty experiments on, was free. No one knew how it happened but he was unhinged and the first person he would come for were the people they had used him to make. This meant they needed an escape for the test subjects and Rachel could still monitor them. They all moved quickly to Mystic Falls, basically overnight. Murchadha began to house them there, and slowly the program was pulled away from the government and into the arms of Tegan Murphy, Rachel’s boss. Rachel continues to monitor all of the subjects as they adjust to their new life in Mystic Falls, unsure of where this project will take them next.

The PBW Witch Shop is a curated selection of witchcraft and magic related zines, books, pin-back buttons, tarot cards and more.

We focus on traditional and folkloric witchcraft, animism, chaos magic, secular witchcraft, magical herbs and plants, queer witchcraft, tarot & Divination, witchcraft & magic in politics, history, culture, and social & racial justice,  and aspects of non-Wiccan forms of witchcraft, magic, and paganism.

Pre-Covid the Portland Button Works primarily made custom pinback button. Selling zines and books was secondary and more of a hobby for me to share things I’d like to read. Right now our business is pivoting to focus on books and zines that people can read in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Some items are from well known witchcraft and occult publisher and some are titles from small publishers with interesting items I don’t see in other shops but I’m excited to elevate.

Okay let's recap the European season for the Blaugrana queens

We start back on December 9 with the first European match of the season against PSV, the round of 32, which ended in a 1-4 victory (Jenni Hermoso 4', Van den Berg 45'+1 OG, Asisat Oshoala 66', Lieke Martens 75').

We hop a week to the 2nd leg where the Blaugrana ladies came out with another 4-1 victory (Caroline Graham Hansen 4', 61' Lieke Martens 41', 75') 8-2 aggregate.

Jump 3 months on March 3 to the 1st leg of the round of 16 against Fortuna Hjørring, which ended in a 4-0 victory (Jenni Hermoso 12' 18' 57' Alexia Putellas 82')

And a week later in the 2nd leg in which the result was almost similar with a 0-5 victory for the Blaugrana ladies (Aitana Bonmati 36' 49', Mariona Caldentey 55' (p), Asisat Oshoala 78', Marta Torrejón 86'

And we are off to the quarter-finals, two weeks later, against Manchester City, a match that ended in a 3-0 victory for the Blaugrana team with Sandra's penalty save turning out to be the crucial factor of the 1/2 finals qualification (Asisat Oshoala 35', Mariona Caldentey 53' (p), Jenni Hermoso 86')

Then on March 31st, Barça booked their tickets to the UWCL semi-finals despite losing 2-1 to Manchester City, with Asisat scoring the only goal for the team, and the aggregate finally being 2-4 for the Blaugranas. Waiting for the result of the PSG-Lyon which was played on April 18 with the Parisian side coming out on top and assuring a new name would be written on the trophy.

On April 25, Barcelona played PSG at Stade Georges Lefevre with the match ending in both controversy and a 1-1 result (Jenni Hermoso 13'), away goal secured, it was time to finish the job at the Johan Cruyff.

May 2, Barça beat PSG 2-1 to qualify for their 2nd UWCL final with Lieke Martens scoring both goals 8' 31 and the aggregate being 3-2. Crucial away goals... gotta love them.

Between the Semis 2nd leg and the Final, Barça played 2 matches. One was the CDR quarter-finals match against Sevilla which ended in a 1-4 victory for the Ladies and the other was the La Liga winning match against Granadilla, due to which FC Barcelona was mathematically proclaimed as La Liga Champions for the 2nd year in a row and without a single dropped point. But that's another discussion by itself, we'll do that at the end of the season.

On to the biggest day of the year.. Sunday, May 16, 2021, 21:00 PM CET, Gamla Ullevi, Göteborg, Sweden .. H1STORY WAS MADE.

After the devastating 2019 UWCL final, The team's first-ever UWCL final, against Lyon, in which the girls were outclassed losing 4-1 (3-0 in the first 30 minutes of the match), and after 2 years of hard work, the Ladies showed the whole continent, hell the whole world even, that they have arrived, that they should be a force to be reckoned with. Completely dominating the newly proclaimed back-to-back English Champions in the first 20 minutes scoring 3 goals, and a fourth one 15 minutes later. Throughout the match, the Blaugrana ladies showed efficiency in attack and in the defensive prowess that was exhibited in that 2nd half to hold off the Blues who came in with the intent to turn the score around.

The Blaugrana Queens Reigned Supreme.

And now some stats and facts for fun.

Starting with the obvious, Jennifer Hermoso was this season's UWCL top scorer with 6 goals.

FC Barcelona became the first Spanish team to win the UWCL trophy.

FC Barcelona also became the first Club ever to win both the UWCL and the UCL trophies.

With the Ladies being crowned UWCL champions, FC Barcelona added another European trophy to its Museum tallying up 44 European titles divided throughout all of the Club's sections.

Throughout the 9 matches, the ladies averaged 54.222% in possession with the highest % coming against Fortuna (away) 73% and the lowest against Manchester City (away) 50%.
