Medicine Through Time - Medieval Case Study (The Black Death)
Year - 1348
Impact :
Killed 30-45% of the population
Caused panic and rioting
Killed lots of religious clergy, left churches empty.
Causes :
Seen as punishment from God
Miasma
Astrological - in 1345 there was an unusual positioning of planets which was interpreted as a bad sign.
Some people in mainland Europe believed it was caused by Jews.
Treatment:
Supernatural - confess sins and ask for forgiveness from God. Flagellation (self-whipping) was common.
Herbal remedies, like myrrh.
Lighting fires to get rid of miasma
Lancing buboes.
Tried bleeding and purging, which did not work.
Prevention:
Prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, flagellation.
Escaping it by escaping miasma - used flowers, and herbs.
Avoidance of those who were contagious.
Government : Attempted quarantine, thought foul smells could drive off miasma, so stopped cleaning streets - made it worse!
