I wouldn't say it's the unofficial anthem but it's an unofficial anthem (if the distinction makes sense). Farnsey was pretty huge here in the 1980s and it is a banger.
Other unofficial anthems include Down Under by Men at Work, a song about how Australians are preceded everywhere by our reputation; Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel, which gets dismissed because of its bogan associations but is a surprisingly good story song about a returned serviceman dealing (badly) with the trauma of Vietnam; I Am Australian by The Seekers, whose chorus really would make a better anthem than the one we have; and the words of the actual national anthem sung to the tune of Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes, as popularised by Adam Hills.
The unofficial anthem is of course Waltzing Matilda, which is the ballad of an itinerant farm worker who steals a sheep to eat and then throws himself into a lake to escape from the wealthy land-owner and his three cop mates, because we have always been a culture of grace and gravity, thank you for coming to my TED talk :D
[ID: A typewritten page from Robbie Williams' Instagram, reading "Sorry for causing an international incident. It will happen again."]
Robbie Williams coming at you once more! He hasn't posted new bracket images like last time but the "80s Anthem Cup" quarterfinal brackets are out so it's time for another poll! Remember, this is the prompt:
The premise for this cup: World peace breaks out - We need an anthem for the world. That anthem will be from the 80s. Because, well we don't know and stop being nosey. All God's children standing side by side belting out which song?
We're doing it cage match style because you can't put multiple polls in a post, but for the record here are the matches:
Never Gonna Give You Up v. Purple Rain
Wake Me Up Before You Go Go v. Take On Me (brutal decision!)
Livin' On A Prayer v. (I've Had) The Time Of My Life
You're the Voice v. Sweet Dreams
Last time you guys voted for Take On Me to take it all...now who's going home with the (solid) gold?
#straya!#we have a lot of good music actually#there are so many more i could name#such as#great southern land by icehouse#horses by daryl braithwaite#treaty by yothu yindi#sounds of then by ganggajang#yeah they're all old but so am i#music <3

Out on the patio we'd sit, And the humidity we'd breathe, We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields Laugh and think that this is Australia.

pretty sure that summer just started.
there was two or three big rolling cracks of thunder (after ominous rumbling for an hour) and then i could literally hear the rain approaching! i live in queensland and i think that legally, this means summer has started.
#it's like candlenights#it starts when it starts#this year queensland summer started on september 26#god i love the sound of a rolling thunderstorm#*Sounds Of Then by Ganggajang in the distance*
