Seraphim Angel Anatomy

What are our thoughts on the anatomy of a seraph angel with 6 wings? How does that work? (Outside of it being magic. Let's have fun with science.)

The biblical description of the six-winged Seraphim angels is super minimal (Isa 6:2, 6, with some interpretation here.) But let's just say for reasons they look like people with 6 wings.

To start: What is a seraph related to? In both biblical and Hazbin Hotel lore, it's implied that (maybe some?) angels can breed with humans, which suggests that they're mammals, and very close to humans. But...I wonder if that has to do with shapeshifting or other magic? Bible nerds chime in. It's also just as interesting/valid to consider bug anatomy, and I encourage bug artists to draw a human-ish body with wings attached in dragonfly or spider style or something.

A number of people have explored the concept of angel anatomy by looking at humans and birds, like DCRoleplays on Deviantart. I also recall this image by Uzlo on Deviantart pointing out that you need pectoral muscles to move your arms/wings, so...if you have two arms and two wings, all of which move independently, you might need four pecs.

Alternatively, here's an extremely cool gif by @squidlife-crisis showing a human ribcage with human arms, the keel of a bird, and what looks like layered pectoral muscles for arms and wings. So, rather than multiple visible chests, an angel with the skin on would appear to just have a bigger chest.

But now add MORE wings. Would we have a huge chest with lots of layers of pecs attached to the keel...and would you need to change the shape of the keel to handle so many attachments?

Or, is someone gonna draw Lucifer or the other seraphim with 8 pecs? Will it be me? For science, obviously.

this FAQ will go over some of the questions about my process that i get in my askbox. some disclaimers:

ANYONE who asks any questions that have been answered in either FAQ will be ignored.

PLEASE don't take this FAQ as gospel or assume that it's viable art advice. it is not. i am not a professional, i am a teenager who draws in her free time and therefore many of these answers will involve things that break common "laws" of art, logic, and anatomy. this is just how i personally go about my illustrations. please also don't take me or any individual artist as your sole inspiration, you will not get anywhere believe me. art is like a balanced diet. if you eat sweets all the time, you'll get sick - but if you only eat veggies and healthy food, you'll get bored. try to take inspiration from a vast range of artists, even those you don't think you'd really enjoy. and most importantly, LEARN THE FUNDEMENTALS OF ART!!!! even just a little bit of knowledge can go a long way, regardless of how simple or realistic you want your artstyle to be. refusing to learn fundamentals had my art looking janky for years.

ok enough waffle let's get started!

Q: HOW DO YOU DRAW FACES?

A: it depends.

there's lots of things you can do to a face to make it unique. the starting point is the facial features themselves - eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth... if they're the same for every character with the only uniqueness being in eyecolor or something like that, you get same face syndrome.

so, take your characters and apply some diverse facial features. certain facial features have certain character connotations too. like downturned eyes implying a laid-back or tired character, or a 3-shaped mouth implying a catty character, something like that.

but, for me, facial diversity isn't enough. it's not like you go out and everyone has the same head shape. so, i tend to try and get creative with face shape, and depending on how thin or wide the shape is, you can move around the facial features too.

these examples are a little shitty but that's because i put them together in 10 minutes. you can see the effect in my actual characters, who have more effort put into them, and how no character looks alike.

other than that, i tend to try and give every character a different eye shape and pupil "type" - so while krankenstein and romèo might have simple black dot eyes, octavia and vivica have large multicolor anime esque eyes, onion has cartoony circle eyes, and so on. if you just switch things around enough, even characters with similar face shapes will look unique. and even if they don't, doppelgangers do exist in real life.

Q: HOW DO YOU DRAW HANDS?

A: once again it depends. some characters have regular shaped hands while some have really tiny hands that only have 3-4 fingers instead of 5. usually my larger characters will have smaller hands but that isn't always the case.

but for the standard hand, i tend to have a line between the palm/base and the fingers. and then i um...add the fingers i guess😭 there's usually a lot of abstraction when it comes to hands for me, because i'm not the best at drawing them. usually either the last three fingers or the middle two will be connected as well depending on the pose.

Q: HOW DO YOU DRAW FURRIES?

A: i don't really know myself. i still don't know how to draw most furry species especially canines, god i hate canines!!! well not really, i can just never draw their snouts. really i draw furries like i would human, just with larger thighs and further back lower legs. and fur too. i like to exaggerate the nails too. and of course add fur, usually at the joints.

Q: HOW DO YOU DO LINEART?

A: i draw over the sketch. i do the sketch in thin, low opacity lineart, and go over it in varying thickness based on the perspective/desired look to get that comic book varied thickness look. the eraser will be your best friend more than the pen here, cuz there's a lot of cleaning up with both the sketch and the final lineart to have everything looking sharp.

Q: CAN YOU GIVE A STEP BY STEP GUIDE OF HOW TO DO YOUR STYLE?

A: no and i will never be able to. there is no formula to my style, i break every rule i make for myself. i barely follow any of the answers i write in these QNAs. they are not rules or steps but rather just me explaining my habits in art. i never have a checklist when i draw, i just do these things intuitively based on years of drawing. this might sound like some stuck up "it comes naturally" thing but trust me IT DOES NOT COME NATURALLY!!! these habits are born from over a decade of drawing. and besides, like i said before, with how varied i try to make my character designs any step by step would never be universal to my style. i'm really sorry but that's the truth. either way i hope this QNA helps.

Different Ways To Relieve Stress

Stress is a common issue with a lot of people these days. It’s said to be the reaction of the body against certain changes or events. As the changes or events require a response, the body reacts to them with physical, mental, or emotional responses.

 Stress itself is not a bad phenomenon. In fact, sometimes a little amount of stress can make you work or perform better. But, an overwhelming amount of stress can cause adverse effects on your health and lifestyle. Relieving stress can be a hard task but it is not impossible. There are various simple methods to get rid of mental stress.

 We have picked some efficient ideas to make you stress-free. These stress repellent methods are listed below:

 Art therapy:

 Making art can also be very helpful in relieving stress. Make yourself busy in paint by diamond painting kits for kids, playing a musical instrument or anything artistic which could ultimately make you feel relaxed. It doesn’t matter if you are just average in doing any artistic activity, the main objective of this activity is to remove your attention from the stress factor.

 Making an art or getting busy in any art activity would help to lower the stress. This would keep you distracted from other matters and provide you a flow. The act of having a hobby would make you feel more self-balanced in your life. The sense of creativity would help you in getting out of the stressful phases.

 Making your body busy:

 A great way to get rid of stress is to get busy with physical activities. These activities may include running, jogging, walking, exercises, sports, and yoga. When you get busy with this kind of activity you will feel fresh and relaxed.

 An important way to eliminate mental stress is yoga. Yoga is becoming very popular all over the world. Yoga can be very helpful in stress relief. According to several types of research, this activity can bring improvement in your mood and lower hormone levels in your body.

Mental stress is relieved when your body is exposed to physical stress. Exercise or sports can help you in relieving stress. Doing exercise can make you more competent and confident. This sense of competence and confidence would help you in getting rid of stress. 

 Try to get busy with the physical activity which makes you happy. This would elevate your mood and take you away from the stress.

 Quality time:

 Spending time with your close ones can help you to live a stress-free life.  Spending time with people you love gives you support to cope with daily life issues and stress-producing factors. It gives you a sense of self-belonging and worth, which could be a help for you in tough times. You can even share your problems with the people you trust.

 This would help you in relieving the stress. This would also help you to get an idea about the solution of the problematic matter.  Spending time with friends, family, and children would help in releasing oxytocin. Oxytocin is a natural stress reliever. Strong social ties like friends and family can be helpful in dealing with Stressful times. They act as moral support for a person in tougher phases.

 Sometimes the biggest help for you is your family. They can provide you the hugs you need to cope with issues in your life.  Expressing your problems to your loved ones feel you a lot better and more stress-free.

 Taking rest:

 Sometimes giving yourself rest from daily hustle and bustle is the best option. Getting a sound amount of rest can also help in coping with the stress problem. If you are going through a stressful phase, you probably need to get some rest.

 Take some deep breaths. Write your problems on a notepad. Skip your noon time’s coffee. Chew gum and throw your stress away. You can get rest by quitting social media for some time. You should adjust your sleep time and regularly go for a body massage. Light some soothing scent candles.

 Listen to peaceful music or read a storybook or novel. Engage yourself in some digital gaming. These activities would provide you mental support and lower the amount of stress rising hormone levels in your body.

 Remembering happiness:

 Another way to be stress-free savoring happy times in your life. Thinking about happier moments in the past can bring freshness and happiness to your mind. You can also do creative visualization to engage yourself in imaginary happiness.

 You can also plan some vacation plans in a far country. This would help to bring happiness to yourself. You can also view your quality time snaps with your mates and family members during happy times. This would also provide you moral support to go through tough stressful phases of your life.

 You can always remind yourself of some cheerful past event that happened in your life where you achieved something. This would help you in seeking the positives in the current situation. Remember the phrase, “opportunities lie behind obstacles” and there you go, stress would be eliminated and you would surely feel more confident in yourself.

 Returning to nature:

 Nature can be a great factor in making you stress-free. There are plenty of amazing activities which involve nature. You can go to your backyard and start planting or watering the plants. Believe me, you will feel relaxed. The view of greenery can make you happy.

 You can go to the nearest park to your house. Breathing fresh air from plants and views of greenery would make you forget the stress quickly.

 Another natural way to relieve stress is by spending time with animals. Do you have any pets? If yes then go see them. Sometimes all you need is to cuddle your furry pets to relieve your stress.

 The bottom line:

 Sometimes self-help is the best help. If you are feeling stressed and broke you don’t need to suffer. There are very simple ways to relieve stress. All you need is to give yourself some time and cut off yourself from daily hustle and bustle of life.

 Engaging your mind and body in some fun activities would really be a stress relief. We have presented some easy ways to get rid of overwhelming mental stress. We hope you would be successful in relieving your stress following the above-listed methods.

No. I haven't heard of the anime/ manga. Is it good? -💅🏾

Yes! It’s actually one of my favorite titles and tbh I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. Noda, the mangaka, is completely off his shits and I’m honestly surprised by some of the stuff he gets away with. I think a lot of people overlook it because the art style isn’t your typical pretty boy bishonen squeaky clean look but if adult men are your thing ... 😎👌

I’ll show you some of my faves but fair warning, the eyebrows and facial hair can be WILD at times but that’s part of the appeal. You won’t find these character designs anywhere else and I respect that creativity tbh.

This is Tanigaki 🥰 big beefy bear of a man with ass for days. Very hairy. Very soft. Went from sociopathic asshole to baby over the course of a single arc. Love him.

This is Kantarou, my token Shikamaru look alike boo thang. Lol He’s really sweet, actually, and a Leo like me!! ���� I love my fellow Leo kings and queens! Unfortunately he hasn’t gotten to play a very big role in the story but he’s definitely there and I AM looking. 👀

My man Usami 🤪 this dude is clinically insane and I live for it. Like. He’s actually certifiably out of his mind. Totally off his rocker. I want him to fuck me up but also fuck up shit WITH him. Our love for Tsurumi will bring us together. 🥰

Speaking of Tsurumi, here he is. 😍 So sexy. So gallant. So charming. This is actually from a flashback and he doesn’t look quite like this in the main storyline but ... I didn’t want to scare you guys. 😅 He has a major head injury and is also off his shits, but in a “I’m scared yet also aroused” way. Lmao

I’ll go ahead and shout out Kiroranke too because he’s another beefy, hairy man who also happens to be a father and he likes his women THICC, which I respect. He’s got this very ... fatherly/uncle vibe to him that just hits all my buttons. I’d like for him to take me out in the woods and ... teach me a few things. 😏💦

Ogata is an honorable mention because, while he’s not at the top of MY list, he’s by and large the fan favorite. Basically everyone wants a piece of this bastard cat. He’s got his fair share of loose screws (almost everyone in this series does 😂) and he’s a certain kind of vile, but god is he fucking hot. PHEW.

So anyway yeah, there are plenty of other dudes I didn’t even mention. Tsukishima is VERY attractive to me, for example, but this post is already long enough. Lol I’ll just say that regardless of your preferences, whether it’s old men or sneaky bastards or rugged outdoors types or sociopathic murderers or dads or military men, this series will probably have you covered. If you do decide to check it out, I’d suggest going with the manga. It’s much better than the anime, which skipped some arcs and censored some of the more ... gruesome stuff. 😅 Also the art is just better, the first two seasons of the anime were kind of low budget but the third season is looking pretty good now.

Also fair warning, there IS quite a bit of uh triggering content involving animals. I’m sensitive af when it comes to animals and I was very upset at the start of the series but luckily it kind of shifted focus and scenes like that only pop up occasionally now. It’s a damn good story, I’m just a big baby when it comes to our furry friends. 🥺 There’s a lot of hunting and living off the land going on here, so while it’s not like ... technically animal abuse, it still made me sad. And since I know some people care about this I’ll also mention that there isn’t really any female fanservice but the dudes DEFINITELY get their money shots in. 🥴

For Untamed Spring Fest Day 4: Bunnies. As much as I love them, I wanted to be creative and use bunnies for something other than Wangxian (though they, or LWJ at least, are still involved by implication). I can’t walk more than three feet into a story without making something ace and polyamorous - in this case you can see I gave Jiang Cheng the former and these three the latter.

1167 words, Nie Huaisang/OC, Lan Xichen. Post-CQL, plenty of unresolved tension left over from the plot, overtures of friendship.

Lan Xichen did actually come visit them in Qinghe, not even a month later. Meihua smiled over-satisfied when his arrival was relayed from the city gate, and Nie Huaisang sighed dramatically. He could practically see some devious forfeit coalescing behind her eyes. Nie Huaisang would surely enjoy it, after a fashion, but he pouted anyway at being the loser.

He would have to be certain to win their next bet. He had a black silk rope hidden in a box in the back of one of their cabinets, and he had several ideas for how he might …

Lan Xichen looked like a figure in a tragic painting. He had restored his [careful] grooming, and he wore luxurious robes once more. The sadness was still so thick it almost literally dripped off him, painting the floor in his wake, but he looked so very beautiful for it. Nie Huaisang felt guilty for admiring it, for enjoying anything about this peaceful man’s suffering. But it wasn’t his fault Lan Xichen even in mourning was art in motion.

He was breathtaking when he smiled, too. Nie Huaisang remembered that distantly from his youth.

He met Meihua’s gaze, knew she saw the same beauty he did. They had discussed this.

“What if the honorable and untouchable Zewu Jun denounces us as terrible and perverted people?” Huaisang had asked, trying to wheedle out the pitfalls in their plan to ensnare the lachrymose First Jade with friendship. “What if he curses our souls with the pure good magic of the Shattered Ice Flute?”

“Sure, but what if he thinks ‘yes, I would certainly be pleased to lie gently with the beautiful Sect Leader of Qinghe and his equally beautiful wife?” Meihua had responded. Always weighing the potential reward.

They were in total agreement on the matter.

She was stunning herself, wrapped in heavy brocade and adorned with rich metal. Not the fine filigree of Lanling; her jewelry was bold and severe. She was every inch the image of ‘Madam Nie’. He had tried as well, put on his grandest hairpiece and carried his most beautiful fan. It was foolish, probably – Lan Xichen was still deep in the well of his grief, and would likely pay no attention to their attire, much less think any further beyond it. But both he and Meihua played the long game, and committing to the role was part of it.

By the time Lan Xichen had fully approached the dais, Nie Huaisang had spent long enough admiring both his wife and their guest that he noticed the members of Lan Xichen’s retinue were bearing something square-shaped draped in a blue cloth. Nie Huaisang stood and properly returned Lan Xichen’s bow, but he did so while wondering what was underneath it.

“Sect Leader Nie, Madam Nie,” Lan Xichen said. “I hope you will not think me presumptuous for taking your invitation at face value and visiting you here in your home.”

“Far from it, Zewu Jun,” Meihua said. “We are pleased and honored you accepted our invitation, and look forward to hosting you for however long you wish to remain within these walls.”

“Your hospitality is generous, so I have brought with me a small gift.” Lan Xichen smiled gently, and it very nearly reached his eyes. “My brother has told me that Sect Leader Nie is fond of at least some small creatures, and we have quite an abundance of them at Cloud Recesses these days. I thought you might like to add a few to your menagerie.” He reached out with his graceful hand and pulled the blue silk off the box like a waterfall.

The box was a cage, and inside it were rabbits. Three beautiful, adorable bunnies, obviously taken from Lan Wangji’s sizeable herd – one white with grey, two mostly charcoal.

Nie Huaisang was glad his reputation was for having an empty head, because it meant he could coo and hurry down the steps to inspect the bunnies from close up without having to try to act dignified. Meihua was right on his heels, and when he glanced over his shoulder, her real smile was shining through her painted one.

“They’re charming, Zewu Jun,” she was saying, as Nie Huaisang stuck his fingers through the bars and touched the white one’s feather-soft fur. Its nose and whiskers tickled his skin.

“How marvelous of you to bring them, Xi-xiong.” The words were out of Nie Huaisang’s mouth before he could think them through, silly and overly-familiar and supposed to be disarming, but the air turned to ice beneath them.

What right did Nie Huaisang have to call Lan Xichen such a thing? The mourning Lan Xichen, stricken down by despair. The last person who’d called him a brother by bond had died by his hand, at Nie Huaisang’s engineering. Nie Huaisang would deserve Lan Xichen’s retribution, for trampling all over his grief.

Nie Huaisang had lost his brother by blood. Nie Huaisang had stood at his own brother’s swordpoint. Lan Xichen had mourned Nie Huaisang’s Da-ge too, hadn’t he? Wasn’t Mingjue also Lan Xichen’s sworn brother?

“I’m glad you like them, Sect Leader Nie,” Lan Xichen said, as if nothing had ever happened. He put his hand to a door in the side of the cage, unlatching it and drawing one of the grey bunnies out. “And you as well, Madam Nie.” He held the rabbit expectantly, as if he were waiting for Nie Huaisang to take it.

“Please, call me Zhang Meihua,” she said, ignoring the thread of tension, though she certainly wasn’t ignorant of it. “If you’re comfortable with it. You’re our personal guest, and we’re all friends here.”

“Zhang Meihua,” Lan Xichen affirmed. Then, after a pause: “Nie Huaisang.”

Nie Huaisang reached out slowly, gathering the bunny into his arms. “Zewu Jun,” he said, rather like an apology.

Lan Xichen inclined his head. “Lan Xichen,” he corrected in answer. He passed the other dark bunny to Meihua and held the light one himself. They took their time like that, absorbed in the little creatures. Lan Xichen and Meihua seemed determined that theirs become fast friends. Nie Huaisang left them to it, but eventually, when he looked up from talking to and clucking over his own furry companion, he found Lan Xichen was watching him. His expression was half bemused and half one of something like … longing. It was almost fond.

He was certainly not fond of Nie Huaisang. Not yet, at any rate. Perhaps he was jealous of the rabbit, and his long seclusion had made him yearn for some gentle touches and soft words.

Nie Huaisang’s face warmed – it had an unfortunate propensity for it, which was one of the many reasons he carried his fan, though he couldn’t bring it out now with the animal in his arms. If that was what Zewu Jun wanted, he and Meihua would be pleased to oblige him – if they could be clever enough to bring the pieces of his heart into alignment.

What have been your efforts in the campaign for SaveWOY and what are your upcoming plans to save WOY? Now this is a question worth answering!

In the past, I made a little list of the things I did to support SaveWOY and bring awareness to Wander Over Yonder’s existence and its third season plans. Since then, I’ve done a whole lot more from hand-drawn art to more intricate art. Some of them are almost as special as that signed poster @peepsqueak got from the WOY crew as a token of their gratitude.

Here’s an updated list of everything I did for SaveWOY so far:

Attended the SaveWOY picnic at Griffith Park, where I got to sign a banner.

Pointed out various higher-ups involved in the business of Disney television.

Sent several letters to the higher-ups, some of which had envelopes with an image of the downed space pod taped to them.

Started a weekly Twitter post series, SaveWOY Thought of the Week.

Made Lite-Brite art of Wander and Lord Hater, which Craig McCracken and Francisco Angones liked.

Attended D23 2017 with an Operation: FORCE drawing of Hater, a colored page of Wander and Sylvia and a few facts about WOY, and an orange pen with a green hat (I got the hat from the aforementioned picnic) - there, I signed a bench with Wander and the phrase, “Never hurts to help.”

Signed my name, drew Wander (and my own character, Jacken DeBox), and wrote, “Happiest place in outer space!” on the highest beam for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Wrote a letter (and drew Wander) for the victims of the Las Vegas tragedy with the message, “The darkest times call for the sunniest smiles!”

Got Craig to reveal the name of the ship (said to play a BIG part in S3, made a cameo in Future-Worm) when I commented that we’d have to figure out the name - his response: “The ship is called The Star Nomad.”

Wrote a couple of cards to two Disney higher-ups with the message, “A little nice makes naughty think twice!”

Drew Dominator in a situation that might take place several seconds after she passes the downed space pod, just in time for Noël Wells’s B-day.

Made the Star Nomad with LEGO Digital Designer.

Made three images in the style of the original Star Wars trilogy VHS set.

Made an image of “The First 5 Years” with over 140 individuals (including the question marks for 3 new mains and 2 new regulars - I still want to know what they look like!) and one cleverly made Hidden Mickey.

Made a short comic page of Lord Hater trying to break out of the DTVA vault plus a sly reminder that Disney owns the rights to WOY.

Shared a list of potential episode titles for S3.

Made an actual LEGO Star Nomad based on the model made with LDD. Hopefully, those who worked on WOY have noticed. In case you missed it, here’s a picture...

Now, the ideas I have in mind for further boosting support for the campaign. I may not be able to do most of them myself, but they are certainly for everyone’s consideration.

Provide updated information of higher-ups (if any).

As soon as we find out what Kid Cosmic looks like, expect fan art of him saying, “Watch my show and tell your friends so we’ll make that Mousey Company pay for what they did to my half-brother!”

Another SaveWOY picnic - if there’s one in my general area, you can count me in.

Drawings of various WOY characters stuck on the ex-secret planet explaining why they need to leave said planet. Maybe I could also show how the galaxy’s villains would react if they learn that Lord Dominator’s been bested by Lord Hater.

Drawings consisting of SaveWOY-related messages spoken by the main characters from Disney shows that got at least three seasons (e.g. DuckTales, Fish Hooks), tons of love from the viewers and the executives (e.g. Gravity Falls), or both (e.g. SvtFoE, Mickey Mouse ‘13).

Phineas: “We may be creative and famous, but we’re not the ones who came up with the Star Nomad. It’s the ship powered by orbbles! Orbbles! I’d LOVE to see it take flight, wouldn’t you? If you let Mr. McCracken end the show his way, and not the executive way, which, truth be told, is the absolute worst, Wander will surely be elated!”

Ferb: “The Orbble Transporter was invented by conjoined twin brothers, voiced by the performers of the theme song.”

Irving (peeking in from the side): “Speaking of voices, the titular main character sounds JUST LIKE ME! How could you possibly resist?! And look, just because I’m the biggest fan of these guys (gesturing to P&F) doesn’t mean I have no interest in what’s planned for the furry orange fella!”

Since I’m a full-time Disneyland cast member, I should be able to make contacts with anyone who might have more clues about what S3 would entail. Binge-Watching: Kiznaiver, Episodes 10-12

And so we reach the end! In which Trigger gets a bit too Trigger-y, but Nori’s culmination shines through all the same, and the false connections become real.

Pull the Trigger

Studio Trigger has a bit of a controversial reputation in the anime community. On one hand, you have fans praising them as the second coming of the old guard, keeping the spirit of the acclaimed Gainax alive with its wild imagination and creativity and carrying the ethos of classic anime into the future. On the other, you have detractors who slam them as unfocused, empty and cheap, pandering to icons and signifiers of classic otaku-dom without ever moving beyond nostalgia. Honestly, I feel like the whole debate is overblown on both sides, especially considering just how few anime Trigger’s actually made as of yet; not everything they put out is gonna be a winner, but not everything is gonna suck either. I was swept away by Kill la Kill, I was lukewarm on Gridman, and I suspect that I will absolutely loathe Darling in the Franxx when I finally get to it. Kiznaiver is unquestionably a Trigger show with all the stylistic trappings that entails, but it is no more a referendum on the studio than any other show they’ve put out.

That said, if there’s one area of Kiznaiver where I think the detractors may have a point, it’s in the needlessly overblown ending. Up until the final episode, Mari Okada’s writing has kept it a remarkably low-key affair for all the evil mascot costumes and pseudo-science backstory. It’s been about normal teens living normal lives, struggling with the complicated emotions of growing up and accepting their feelings, with the sci-fi trappings only serving as a metaphorical backdrop to that struggle. But then, all of a sudden Nori’s launching a plan to bound the entire world up in the Kizna system so that all of humanity can share each other’s pain, and the streets are being invaded with armies of furries as sinister red lights peer down on the streets, and everything comes to a head on an open bridge with Nori standing at the top, looking down on the crowds below and silhouetted by the quiet chaos unfolding around her. It’s an incredibly abrupt tone shift that feels at odds with the story that’s come before. Sure, it’s not aliens, but it’s a very clear echo of the Evangelion Intrsumentality Project ending with its themes of humanity being able to understand each other even if they aren’t psychically connected, except instead at coming at the climax of 24 episodes of robot/alien brawls and intense psychosomatic mindfuckery, it comes at the climax of 11 episodes of essentially Anohana as filtered through an art-deco fun house. That kind of understated, grounded look at deep introspection does not lend itself to transforming into this kind of spectacle so suddenly, even if the spectacle itself is still as stylish as this studio has become known for. Maybe if it was scaled back so it was only, like a certain section of the city that was in danger, or maybe just the school, so it kept that intimate feel of being centered around characters and people moreso than big ideas and broad strokes? I dunno, whatever the best option was here, it would have to involve going a lot smaller than this.

The Girl of a Thousand Pains

It’s a good thing, then, that as incongruent as the presentation of this finale is, the emotional clarity of the stakes is still crystal clear. Nori’s motivations have been Kiznaiver’s longest running mystery, so it really had to nail the reveal of what exactly was going on with here if it wanted to make this finale work. And thankfully, this time, it knew exactly how to get where it was going without taking any shortcuts. Nori ends up serving as an example of the flipside of the kind of empathy symbolized by the Kizna system, a cautionary tale of letting yourself becoming subsumed by the feelings of others without retaining any of your own identity. When the initial experiment went wrong, it wasn’t that all the kids took on too much pain; it was that Nori ended up being the focal point for all of it. She took in the sensations of all nineteen kids she was connected with, sapping away their ability to feel while supercharging her own sensations to the point of agony. She became figuratively and literally addicted to carrying everyone’s pain, to the point where she refused to give it back, only taking more and more away as the other kids just became number and number. Because she didn’t know how to connect with people; she was scared that without the literal bond of the Kizna system that forced everyone to be privy to each other’s feelings, they would all leave her alone with no reason to keep their connection alive. And she’s felt every single ounce of that pain ever since, sucking in every time Katsuhira suffered and robbing him of his ability to feel, refusing to acknowledge how deeply those scars were still being carved into her. Because without the Kizna system, she would be alone. Just a lonely girl who could never feel pain, or joy, or friendship, or anything ever again.

This is the kind of stuff that Kiznaiver does best. It uses its plot mechanics as direct thematic devices, tying subtext and text together in ways that enhance both with clarity and precision. You understand Nori’s desires, but you also understand why she’s wrong. You understand how self-destructive and damaging this kind of total connection is, just as you understood it when End of Evangelion made that exact same point. And it leads to the most powerful scene of the entire show: Katsuhira meeting the shells of the lab children who were affected the most. They’re vegetative, almost like statues, so drained of their ability to feel that the world around them might as well not even exist. And in that moment, he understands everything. He understands the pain of not being able to feel pain. He understands how deeply that emptiness cuts for the girl who took on that pain. And he understands how his own emptiness cuts just as deeply for Chidori, Tenga, and all the other friends he’s made along this journey. He understands how, without even realizing it, he’s forced the people who care about him to shoulder his pain by themselves, how Nori’s own pain has reverberated onto all of their lives. And he utterly breaks down crying, able to truly feel for the first time in forever, for the friends he’s let down, for the Nori who used to be so full of life, for the pain he desperately wants to carry. It’s such a simple, powerful moment, and it cuts right to the core of what makes this show at its best so damn great. You are never as alone as you think, and the actions you take affect everyone who knows you, whether you realize it or not. No man is an island, even by choice. So stop trying to act like one, take responsibility for your life, and reach out like you were always meant to, reach out and grasp the world waiting for you.

Friendship is Magic

And therein lies the true power of Kiznaiver: not the chaos and convolution of its greater mythos, but the soft, intimate touch that crosses between people when they make the effort to reach for each other. The reason the Kizna system was so limited in scope was that it was only ever intended to be training wheels; once those wheels come off, you have to put in the effort to connect with people by yourself. As Nico neatly summarizes, because seriously, Nico’s the best, if these fractured friends still want to know each other now that they no longer have direct access to each other’s ids, they can’t wait around. They have to connect on their own. Because they never needed literalized representations of the human interaction process to truly interact; they just needed to know they could. And Katsuhira makes those connections, puts in that effort, refuses to let the dissolution of the Kizna system be the dissolution of the bonds that system helped build. He apologizes to Chidori for how his self-isolation hurt her in another achingly potent scene. He reaches out to his friends and lets his feelings reach them, lets them share his pain not through a structure, but through true empathy. And at last, he confronts Nori and asks her for the one thing she needs to hear: to give him back his pain. To give him back his connection to the world around him, the thing that lets him let people in on his own terms. He pulls them all together, because in the end, they never needed simulated friendship to become true friends. They never needed shared feedback to feel each other’s pain as their own. They had all the tools they needed right there with them.

Kiznaiver has not been a perfect show. It’s been a little lopsided, a little ragged, a little too simplistic for its own good. But goddamn if the power of its ultimate message doesn’t shine through all the same. In the end, you can’t ask for much more than that.

The alchemical power of college-sponsored wine: Arts Week 2017, half-remembered.

Arts Week came upon us in the third week of Trinity 2017, glittering and glistening through our college colours of black and gold to reveal itself through this year’s theme of Alchemy. 

Whilst maybe a little loosely connected in places (is pole dancing alchemical? It’s certainly a form of magic to watch students stiff from the library attempt to haul their limbs into something resembling elegance) the general theme of transformation and states of change was an apt one for a year that could be described as nothing short of tumultuous. 

It was also perhaps fitting seeing as Arts Week this year fell the day after the biennial Brasenose Ball, and thus required a great deal of shape shifting from sleepy attendees to muster the arm strength to put together a new stage in the remnants of the Ball’s ruins. 

Fittingly, Monday started with a very gentle bang as Tian, a third year artist, ran a workshop on the art of Qigong (literally: "Life Energy Cultivation") - a remarkably well attended workshop given that most attendees had had a grand total of 5 hours sleep all weekend in the aftermath of the Ball. Morning workshops continued all week - from life drawing to bark horn crash courses to gold leafing and even the appearance of a VIP guest. 

Life drawing took place on Tuesday morning, with a twist. The twist in this case came in the form of the long muscular bodies of the models - and their many thousand legs. The chance to draw millipedes and snakes (real snakes, not the kind that always steal your milk and never wait for you in the Hall queue) drew a crowd keen to get up close. Masterpieces were made, with biologists turning out in droves to correctly identify the muscular sections and also correct my erroneous assumption that millipedes have a thousand legs. 

I had tricked scientists into drawing, and thus alchemy was underway.

Wednesday morning heralded the arrival of the mysterious “Celtic Chris” as he descended upon us with multiple horns and flutes in tow, carved by his own hands and foraged from woodland. Nobody knew quite what to expect from the ‘bark horns’ he promised: horns that barked? Horns from sheep? Celtic Chris played some lovely melodies on a carved instrument that raised hopes for everyone’s own creative endeavours. 

Unfortunately it so happened that this instrument was not a bark horn, nor even close to it in output. 

As it turned out, the process involved a great deal of scraping and twisting of sticks, with the end result being strangely, if not intentionally, reminiscent of a dog barking. Or at least that’s how it sounded when played by me. These howls rang out across the quad for the afternoon, goading those who had sworn to be distracted by neither art nor sunshine out of their study lairs - then forcing them back in when it appeared that people would not cease in attempting to achieve the elusive singular note that the horn could allegedly produce. 

One such horn, rumoured to be Sam Quinn’s, was left overnight and discovered to much delight the next morning at the gold leafing workshop. It reemerged far shinier and possibly less usable, alongside a variety of glimmering items such as lighters, water bottles, glasses and even a laptop. The theme of “Alchemy” that the week loosely abided to was truly in action, as objects went from practical to gold but glued shut; a small price to pay for glamour.

Friday’s morning workshop brought with it more star power than those shiny leaves and the celebrity draw of Celtic Chris combined: the author of Maisy Mouse, Lucy Cousins. Everyone learnt how to recreate the iconic character and how you might draw subfusc on cartoon animals with no arms. The final product was a painting as wide as Lecture Room XI. Whilst it currently lies dormant in the JCR, there have been rumours of getting Joe Organ to incorporate it into Open Days to show just how talented Brasenose students can be when armed with only a kids paintbrush, a mild hangover and a determination to remember what colours go into a cartoon peacock’s tail.

In the afternoons, events ranged from a capella (so much a capella) to plays and pole dancing, with great excitement arriving midweek with the appearance of a BBC One camera crew in college. The news started to spread in both whispers and college-wide emails, prompting the appearance of the entire development office in Deer Quad to watch Brasenose’s own Daniele and Hiba do some beautifully spontaneous leaps from the chapel stairs for the sixth time that morning. 

After a tense start involving a well timed exchange of boxes containing furry spiders to those with film equipment occurring on Old Parlour staircase (see “Life” Drawing, above), the Alternotives took to the stage.

Whilst the eventual screen time of Old Library and Deer Quad was limited due to them only lasting one episode on Pitch Battle, the memory of John Bowers (QC) sat cross legged at the front of the marquee, entranced by a capella, will remain in our hearts forever. 

Not to be overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of a BBC camera, we also had noted Oxford groups the Gargoyles and The Oxford Belles - whilst it seems like every group seems to claim the role as Oxford’s original all-singing, some-dancing troupe, the Belles at least had star power in the way of internet reach, with noted fan Ashton Kutcher sadly declining to turn up on the day despite his Facebook post-based enthusiasm. We’ve all been there, Ashton.

We also had not one but two plays running this year: one imagining the late and great William Shakespeare in the context of fresher’s week as a mechanical engineering student disillusioned with both flirting and the sciences, and a dynamic rehearsed reading of Pygmalion. 

Dynamic in that it was meant to be a traditional reading that somehow wandered off the rails and all the way up the staircase 10 at one point. 

Both were enthusiastically received by large crowds composed of friends and family members and even some paying guests, and feedback on both was great, with one very anonymous audience member remarking that Cal Demby-Harris pulled off the red officer’s jacket better than anyone else in college. He is, thus far, the only person in college to have worn this garment.

On Friday afternoon, following the debut of Pygmalion on the quad, Medieval Kitchen was transformed with poles and hoops for what was technically our most popular event of the week - according to Facebook’s algorithms. “Pole Dancing Workshop” reached 45k people on Facebook, something Brasenose Arts would love to claim as representative of the average enthusiasm for the week but unfortunately should probably note down as due to an irresistibly amusing combination of Oxford’s hallowed halls and the Wikihow-esque illustration on the cover photo, amplified by the Facebook reach of our treasured Stanford exchange students and their friends in Palo Alto. 

As it happens, a solid 20 or so people attended each session, and it was a sight to behold to see students hanging from the beams of MK (or rather, suspended close to - I can confidently assure you that no actual climbing of the architecture occurred in case you are reading this, Matt Hill Domestic Bursar). 

Following the excitement of our viral success story on Friday afternoon was the Arts Week Formal, an event eerily free of senior staff, which meant that the gavel ended up in my not entirely capable hands. 

Whilst I can’t vouch for much of what I said, it has been reported that I gave a speech - all I can recall is that the food was wonderful and I was probably a rather soppy and exhausted shell of a human by this point. I can also recall that the Northern Soul night that followed the dinner was a roaring success. Playing off of Brasenose’s fondness for ceilidhs, and retaining the joy and mandated dancing of a ceilidh but with a name one can spell without googling, the night involved much moving of tables and some unexpected cameos from a porter or two. Again, Matt Hill, if you see any photos where we appear to be standing on tables, it is merely an illusion and we are in fact levitating from the sheer fun of it all. 

Saturday morning was naturally a quieter affair, with the final performance of ‘Willy Shakes’ taking centre stage both on the quad and in the timetable. In the afternoon came a panel on Inequality in Film, boasting speakers from the BFI, Girls in Film and Another Gaze Journal as well as Jendella, an independent filmmaker and photographer.

Following the panel, after deliberation between Brasenose’s thriving and warring FilmSocs, came an open air screening of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet. The air was warm with the promise of the great summer heatwave yet to come, and the fairy lights we had swiped from the wreckage of the ball and haphazardly strung across the marquee’s frameworks glimmered in reflection with the candles of the film. 3DIMAX eat your heart out. 

The next morning the early summer sun rose on the same marquee, only slightly dampened by overnight showers that cleared to a blazing brightness by the time the annual celebration of Jazz on The Quad dawned. Our Music Rep and Organ Scholar, the multitalented Sarah Hughes, had managed to gather us together an impromptu band from her bursting contacts list. As they played, strawberries and (maybe a little too much) Pimms were handed round liberally, leaving everyone in a fruit flavoured midday daze to round off the week. 

The fact that we had well and truly trampled the quad to pieces and broken several pieces of expensive IT equipment is merely a blip among these heady memories, and one I feel no fear in admitting here, as I know a certain IT rep never reads my notices to the end, regardless of content. Sweet, guiltless bliss.

The Longstanding Love Affair Between Cannabis and Comedians

From Cheech and Chong to George Carlin, comedians have openly experimented with cannabis for eons. As a comedian myself, I find that cannabis shifts my perspective by transforming mundane day-to-day activities into more colorful experiences. For me, it’s easier to see the peculiarities and ridiculousness that life brings after I smoke. If you want to make people laugh, you have to know how to laugh yourself. And with so much chaos and technological stimulation, sometimes it can be hard to see the humor in life. But weed makes it easier. That’s why I took a dive into the lives of comedians to gain a better understanding of the inherent connection between cannabis and comedians, and the role the plant plays within the comedy community.

Doug Benson

Who else is more fit than quintessential cannabis comedian, Doug Benson? From his show Getting Doug With High to his documentary Super High Me, Benson’s been a major cannabis advocate and has deeply contributed to the destigmatization of cannabis. But the herb didn’t become a part of his repertoire until later in life.

 “I was a late bloomer, not getting into cannabis until I was 28-years-old,” says Benson. “Other comics on the road turned me onto it. And after a few years of smoking whenever it was available, I started buying my own cannabis, talking about it on stage, and then, eventually, I’d get high before going on stage. Cannabis helps me to access my silly side, so I like to write and perform when high. And pretty much everything else I do is under the influence of cannabis.”

Benson’s view on the role of marijuana within the realm of comedy is unique because he’s been able to weave it into his creative identity in a way that’s genuine to who he is as a performer and human being. I asked Doug why he thought so many comics consumed cannabis, and he says that, essentially, they have the most fitting schedules for it.

“We’ve got the time for it,” he says. “We can get high all day because we work at night, then we can get high all night because we don’t have to get up in the morning unless we have to catch a flight, or do morning radio or tv. But I can do those things high, too!”

And if you’ve ever seen his stand-up (or Getting Doug with High) you’d know he’s a master at getting high and doing his job– a lifestyle many would consider a dream. When it comes to a crowd he’s performing in front of, however, he prefers them to be in the sweet spot: not too high nor too stoned. “The drunk audience is too loud and yell-y,” he says. “The high audience is more polite but can get a little too quiet. I think the perfect level of F-ed up for an audience member is to arrive high and have just one or two drinks. I like to assume that’s what most of my fans do.”

When it comes to consuming cannabis, Benson’s a versatile guy. His favorite method of consumption is taking bong rips. “[They] get me where I want to be the quickest,” he says. When that’s not available, he enjoys puffing blunts–but ones without tobacco (take note, people!)

 “That’s gross,” he says. “I’ve never smoked cigarettes or cigars.”

Benson doesn’t discriminate, though. He loves weed in its many forms. “I love that there are so many ways to consume cannabis!”

He says he enjoys dabbing if he’s going to sleep soon after, while vape pens are nice when you’re in places where smoking is prohibited (which comes in especially handy when you’re on the road and visiting places, like Texas). Edibles, Benson explains, are ideal for plane trips–just as long as you don’t sit in an emergency row. “If the aircraft goes down,” he says, “you don’t want to be high and responsible for logistics.”

Touché.

Jesus Trejo

Jesus Trejo is fairly new to cannabis and tends to gravitate towards CBDdominant strains, like Harlequin. Trejo prefers to minimize the effects of THC and finds that strains heavier in CBD put him in a happy mood with less paranoia and intoxication.

“For the longest time I stood clear of marijuana, but with time and research, I was able to find strains that help me instead of intoxicating me,” Trejo says. “CBD brings a level of focus and non-judgment to my train of thought as I convert premises to jokes. I try not to go on stage medicated because my performance is adversely affected when I’m under the influence. I move around a lot on stage, and if I smoke beforehand, it usually doesn’t go too well.”

Trejo says he prefers performing in front of a high audience rather than a drunk audience for a number of reasons.

“The major difference between performing for a drunk audience versus a high audience is the attention span, for sure!” he says. “With a drunk audience, you’re dealing with amplified versions of people’s personalities whereas with a medicated audience, you’ll find they follow the narrative of the jokes more but the laughs maybe a little delayed, but they are listening. Listening is a big part of stand up, which is why I’ll take a high audience over a drunk one any day.”

When asked why he thinks comedy and cannabis go hand in hand, Trejo, offered some useful insight regarding some of the struggles comedians face.

“I think a lot of comedians flock to cannabis because of its wide array of benefits including: medical reasons, a creativity boost, relaxation, or simply for the good o’ hangout,” he says.

But he also notes the social effects of the plant as another reason it’s used by so many comics.

“Cannabis has the tendency to bring people together, especially within the comedy community,” he says. “Comedians love hanging out with each other after shows, giving each other joke tags, recounting a good night of comedy, or just roasting one another over some good o’ puff, puff pass!”  

Trejo makes a valid point: so much of being a comedian involves being a member of a larger community of comics. And there’s truly nothing more fun than smoking weed with some of the most intelligent and highly entertaining people in the world.

Ms. Jessimae Peluso

Jessimae Peluso (MTV, Sharp Tongue Podcast) also turns to marijuana to unlock her silly side and jump-start her creativity. “Cannabis is my favorite ingredient for creativity!” she passionately exclaims. “It shuts out the negative narrative in my mind and allows the fun goofball some stage time. I can smoke and write but I cannot smoke and perform. I’d get too distracted by some lady’s furry jacket, and I’d probably stop doing comedy and start petting the jacket.”

When asked why she thinks comedians consume weed, Peluso says that it’s a way in which comedians–and people, in general– experience relief from life’s pains. “Most of my comedian friends have severely traumatic pasts,” she says. “A few of those people also suffer from addiction. I think cannabis provides some reprieve from the pain and allows the mind some calm in order to create without the side effects of pharmaceuticals or narcotics”.

In terms of consumption preference, Peluso is a flower-power love child. “I’m an old soul and old school lady who loves flower,” she says. “I recently smoked sun grown Strawberry Cough from Humboldt Farms. [It was] DEE-LISH-US! [I] love a nice j[oint], or a cute little-packed bowl. One of my favorite new ways to [get stoned in the morning] is with my Wake & Bake mug! You can simultaneously drink coffee and smoke kush.”

Queen Wolfie

Rachel Wolfson, better known as ‘Wolfie,’ has been smoking since she was 19-years-old and is known for her cannabis-driven weed memes @wolfiememes. Wolfie explains that weed and comedy are compatible because, in essence, it gives comics the ability–and relief–to pursue their art.

“Comedy and cannabis go hand-in-hand,” she says. “It’s a substance comedians just gravitate toward naturally. I think the reason so many comedians consume cannabis is because a lot of us have anxiety, trouble sleeping, mental health issues, or just enjoy smoking weed”.

For Wolfie, cannabis is an integral part of the creative process– and sometimes a part of her performances. “ I think it helps with my writing,” she says, “and depending on the show, I think it helps with my performances. Some shows I don’t prefer to smoke right before because I think it affects my energy since I’m already low energy. However, if it’s a weed show, I’ll probably smoke like eight blunts before and one right on stage.”

The connection between cannabis, comedy, and creativity is so evident it’s tangible. Whether comics use the plant regularly, recreationally, or medicinally, one thing is certain: we aren’t going to stop using it anytime soon.
