Even though Fidan was born in Izmir, Türkiye to Aydin and Sevda Temel, she remembers nothing of those origins. The only means she has for the history of her roots comes from the stories of her parents and older sister, Meliha. She has since visited Türkiye in her young adult years during a pilgrimage over east in the world.

Growing up in Briar Ridge was perfect for a creative child like Fidan. It was a place the girl’s imagination could flourish, especially with the nurturing and encouragement from her immigrant parents.

When Fidan was supposed to be focusing in school on her coursework, she was busy drawing buildings and furniture from visions and ideas in her head. On the weekends her mother would take her to the flea market and a few other shops with her and they would pick up relatively inexpensive pieces for Fidan to work with. Teachers easily picked up on her sketches and the detailed plans she would make in her notebooks, something they would couple with her strong scores in mathematics, and encouraged Fidan on a path to work in architecture and design.

When she was sixteen she would take a ride into the city and photograph buildings, to the point where she collected so many great shots around the city that she amateurly published a photo book showcasing the beauty and artistry that could be found where most didn’t give more than a passing glance to.

To Fidan's surprise the book sold out in the few stores that actually carried it.

By then she was in shop classes; woodworking and welding. She devoured any kind of art class she could get her hands on as well as any type of crafts class. It wasn’t that she had the bug for art or working with her hands, it really was something innate for her. Something her father would say she got from him.

University was really where she figured out exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Professionally, at least. When she'd been just fourteen her older sister Meliha had been in an awful accident that resulted in some brain trauma. In the immediate recovery and with significant memory loss, no good answers from doctors, while she left Post-Its of reminders around Meliha's hospital room, Fidan contemplated a future in neurology. She wanted to help. Seeing her sister's pain and suffering twisted her heart but as Meliha began to make some recovery, the artist in her couldn't resist a change from pre-med to architecture. The bachelor degree hung proudly in her office was earned from Rice University, one of the top architecture schools in the country.

By the time of graduation she had already launched her own furniture business, custom designs and perfectly crafted, the business was titled Oblivion Designs. When she popped onto the scene, taking on an offer from a prestigious firm in the nearest big city, she made quite the notable reputation in the industry.

Gone away from home for the first time, living in Houston for university, had been life changing in good and bad ways. Aside from her academic success, Fidan met a young man and fell too hard for one of the university's top sports stars. The first two years of their relationship had been a dream, something that belonged in a sweet Hallmark movie someday, but that definitely hadn't been the way that it ended.

An injury changed everything for an athlete whose whole life surrounded a sport he might no longer be able to play. Narcotic pain medications had become an addiction and when in need for a fix he'd become a monster. Any physical abuse had been rare and minor, at least that's how Fidan chose to see it, a push/shove here or there was manageable. Only, as pain medication morphed into a heroin and cocaine addiction, the violence also shifted and got worse. That's when Fidan got out, knew things were done and he needed help beyond the support she'd tried to offer. Overdoses and failed attempts at rehab were not how she wanted to finish off her experience at university. The finality of their breakup destroyed him and one day he'd shown up at her place with a gun.

Being a witness to someone she love's deterioration, resulting in them taking their own life, had turned hers upside down. When Fidan returned home to Briar Ridge she was different. Like something dark and heavy had clung to her. Too thin, withdrawn, and despondent the only thing that helped had been the love of her family and once a week therapy. Eventually she'd been able to put on a mask and act as though everything were fine as she began conquering a career.

Shortly after settling in at the firm in the big city, Fidan began making customs once again. The firm was giving her experience and exposure while she grew her own business on the side, and as time moved on Fidan found herself moving away from the company and more into her own clientele that she’d managed to garner.

Personal Experience: A Story of Financial Revelation I don't know about you but it was not too long ago when I understood a little better how the financial blessing that comes from God works. To me, every pay increase, every promotion, and every business expansion that generated more money, I thought that God was blessing me so I could have more stuff. A bigger house, a newer car, expensive clothes, and more vacations. Again, I am not saying that there is something wrong with having all these things. But I never took the time to ask God; what do you want me to do with these extra resources? This is a very difficult question to ask because in many cases we are afraid of the answer. You see, is a lot easier just to be grateful and thank God for the financial blessings and go and spend the money in any way we want instead of asking Him what to do with it. Because if we are as obedient as we say we are and God tells us for example that we need to give that money away to help someone or to help a cause, we will think twice at least. If you are like me, sometimes you would be willing to disobey God and spend that money on what you want despite that you heard and understood God's instructions. As the saying says; it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission. And this is a big mistake. The Bible says in Luke 16:10 “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. Many times we ask God for more and bigger blessings. But how could God bless us more when we have shown Him that we cannot manage those financial blessings properly? God our Father wants to bless us in every way. But He will not give us something that we are not ready for and that we cannot handle properly. We are the hand in feet of God. So He works through us. Every time that there is a need in this world, He is looking for a faithful man or woman that He can bless so he or she can fulfill that need. For example; recently there was heavy rain for several days in Houston Texas. This caused flooding, and major disaster throughout the area. People lost their homes, their cars, and their personal properties. Many lost all their possessions and in a few hours became homeless. On top of that, many families didn't know where their next meal was going to come from. But there was Mr. Joe to the rescue. A local business owner who owns a big furniture store with several locations. Mr. Joe rented trucks so he could send employees and volunteers to pick up those families and bring them to his furniture stores. There, he provided shelter, clothes, basic needs, and 3 meals a day for every person that was there. And of course, he did this from the goodness of his heart and not expecting to make any money out of it. He just wanted to help people in need. You see, he was willing to shut down his business for as long as it needed to be shut down as long as he was doing what God put in his heart to do. He was God's bank. He has shown God for years that he can be trusted with plenty of resources. Every year during the Christmas season Mr. Joe gives away free furniture to families in need. So for years, God has seen Mr. Joe's character. And God knew that He could keep blessings on Mr. Joe because he was going to do the right things in a moment like this. God kept making financial deposits into Mr. Joe's bank. Blessing him financially every year more and more. Why? Because Mr. Joe shows faithfulness in the little things every year helping others with free furniture. WYNNEWOOD VILLAGE, OAK CLIFF 

Wynnewood Village in Oak Cliff was the largest shopping center in Dallas - before the era of malls. 

Unlike modern-day developers, who often fail to provide neighborhoods with the facilities necessary for everyday life, Angus Wynne and his advisers planned a large shopping center at the heart of their community.

Begun in the summer of 1947, by 1954 the Wynnewood Shopping Village had expanded to 150 shops on 53 acres with 6,400 parking spaces.

There were a movie theater, a post office, the Wynnewood State Bank, department stores, grocery stores, drug stores, restaurants, furniture and jewelry stores, doctors’ offices—even a hotel.

What made (and still makes) the Wynnewood Shopping Center unique is the fact that it is laid out like a “village”: shops are not crammed into one huge air-conditioned complex, but are housed in blocks of one-story buildings surrounded by trees.

Former businesses included Fred's Barbecue, Goff's Hamburgers, Montgomery Wards and Colbert-Volk: a dress boutique with a fully enclosed glass monkey cage located in the back of the store.

Shopping anchored to new vision Oak Cliff’s Wynnewood Village attracts more new stores with a Target-to-be

In late summer, a section on the north side of the sprawling Wynnewood Village will begin to give Oak Cliff shoppers an idea of what’s coming.

The 111,000-square-foot Target under construction has inspired more retailers to the center that has been a destination for Oak Cliff residents since 1949.

There’s no opening date yet for Target, but the coming-soon anchor store has inspired other retailers to commit to the property, according to Wynnewood’s owner Brixmor Property Group, which plans to spend $44.8 million on this phase of Wynnewood upgrades that started in 2023.

In all, Brixmor plans to spend more than $72 million to improve the property over four phases beginning in June 2018.

Three empty spaces have been leased in a building already occupied by Ross Dress for Less and Five Below.

Burlington is opening in 26,461 square feet next to Five Below.

James Avery Jewelry will be in a 2,252-square-foot space.

Bath & Body Works will occupy 5,800 square feet.

That section will have new facades and site work will be done towards the end of the summer, said Brett Milke, Brixmor’s vice president of redevelopment. “So you’ll kind of see that area and go, ‘OK, I see what they’re doing everywhere else.’”

Wynnewood, located just west of Interstate 35E at the corner of Illinois Avenue and Zang Boulevard, is already anchored by two grocers, Kroger and El Rancho Supermercado.

The shopping center has more than 80 stores, restaurants and service tenants, but they’re spread out with huge sections of parking and roads that Brixmor is working to make more approachable for cars and pedestrians.

“We will make traffic flow better. Now it’s kind of a free-for-all,” Milke said. “We want to get it more pedestrian-friendly because even though it’s a large property, people really do shop it on foot.”

The center draws 7.5 million shopper visits a year, Brixmor said. A Capital One Café will open in 2025 in a prominent corner space next to the historic Wynnewood tower sign.

The bank branch has seating, Wi-Fi and a counter to buy coffee.

There’s only one other Capital One Café in Dallas-Fort Worth, and it’s in Frisco’s Stonebriar Centre.

Others in Texas are in upscale properties including Domain in Austin, the Houston Galleria and La Cantera in San Antonio.

Target, which is next to the LA Fitness that opened in 2019, and its new parking lot are filling in a good portion of the property.

Brixmor will turn over the pad site to Target this summer and continue to work on Target’s parking lot.

Other existing buildings are being remodeled.

Last year Skechers opened in a 9,816-square-foot space.

“There’s a lot of commitment from our existing tenants, in addition to bringing in new stores,” Milke said.

El Rancho extended its lease and Kroger is renovating.

Milke is looking at a building behind Target that may be an opportunity for more local shops.

“Hopefully, we can demonstrate a good balance of national and local. Offer something for everybody.”

Foot Locker moved into a larger 10,000-square-foot space next to its former location and opened a new prototype store, Milke said.

Taco Bell, which faces Illinois, has agreed to knock down its building and replace it with its newest concept.

This year Wingstop moved next door into a larger space.

Smoothie King will build a new location in the former Wingstop space.

Brixmor had owned the property for about a decade when it started making plans in 2017 to renovate the center.

Plans for a theater were scrapped during the pandemic.

Oak Cliff was attracting more attention and investments.

Two miles north of Wynnewood Village, the Bishop Arts District had evolved into a popular area.

A Walmart-anchored shopping center opened three miles south on I-35 in 2015.

“We’re projecting to have a stable center when all this is done,” Milke said. “We’ll continue to try to meet the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods.”
