Nex and Donald Insall Associates have been awarded Planning and Listed Building consent to renovate Exeter College Library, Oxford. The culmination of two years of collaboration, the proposals combine a sensitive programme of restoration with considered improvements to the library’s study spaces and accessibility.

The library was constructed in 1857 by George Gilbert Scott, one of a number of his works at Exeter College. The Grade II listed neo-gothic building was built as a two-storey range with an adjoining lower annexe in an ‘L’ formation, around the college’s Rector’s Garden. It sits next to the 17th Century walls of Convocation House, the Grade I listed historic court room of the Bodleian Library, separated only by a sliver of ground between buttresses.

Key to unlocking the tight spaces of the existing library is a modest single storey block – the Link block. Tucked between the party wall of Convocation House and the two wings of the library, the Link block has undergone many alterations over the past two centuries, with little original fabric remaining. What is presently a garden store and windowless strongroom provided the design team a pivotal opportunity to transform the circulation of the library. Through occupying this space and the gap between the Bodleian’s buttresses, Nex have created a new entrance to both wings of the library and new staircase and lift, making the library fully accessible. The new lift shaft will be hidden behind an existing stair turret. A further new entrance and stairs at the north end of the annexe add new emergency exits and allow flexible movement through the building.

The library was significantly altered throughout the last century, with many changes obscuring the original beauty and charm of Gilbert Scott’s design. With no construction drawings to work from, careful investigation of the building’s fabric and study of Gilbert Scott’s wider works informed the design proposals. Reflecting the architect’s modulation of light, the 1950s rooflights in the annexe will be replaced by clerestory windows, as in the St Pancras ticket hall. The involvement of acclaimed conservation architects and historic building advisors Donald Insall Associates was instrumental to decoding the layered history of the building.

The annexe is presently split by a mezzanine floor that bisects Gilbert Scott’s gothic tracery, resulting in an uninviting lower level. Nex’s scheme will restore the windows to their full height and insert a new mezzanine like a ‘bespoke piece of furniture’ across half the width of the annexe, designed to echo the library’s original bookcases. The adjustment returns the annexe to a single volume, improving the quality of reading spaces. Steel beams, added as reinforcement to the range floor in the late 19th century, will be replaced with a new hidden structure, allowing the original ceiling design to be fully revealed.

Building within the historic fabric of Oxford is always challenging, but this site required innovative solutions from the outset. The use of prefabricated hardwood laminated panels allows for structural interventions including a lift shaft and the new 14m cantilevered mezzanine to be partially pre-constructed with minimum assembly on site. On the first floor of the range, bookcases will be constructed to conceal a deployable fire curtain system, without disrupting the historic interior. Existing exposed services will be re-routed and hidden beneath the plinths of the bookshelves, in significant upgrades to the building’s services and environmental comfort and performance.

Nex have developed a timeless material palette which complements the craftsmanship of the original building, such as the cast iron panels to clad the new lift shaft. Celebrating several stained-glass windows created by Exeter alumni, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, the design team have proposed a reeded glass screen and artists’ installations in the new circulation spaces. The design builds on the history of the library, without obscuring its original beauty.

Nex’s proposals modernise the building while ensuring the character of the library is preserved for the next generations of Exeter students and the wider community. The project is expected to be completed by Autumn 2023.

Exeter College has been situated on Turl Street since 1315 and the current library has been in use since 1857.

The renewed library really will be a very special place in which to study.’

Perhaps most famous of Exeter College’s alumni is JRR Tolkien. It was in Exeter College’s library that he came across a book on Finnish grammar that sparked his interest in northern European languages, cultures and mythology, helping to inspire Middle-earth and his stories The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Work on the library will begin in June 2022, with the library scheduled to reopen in October 2023. During that period around five thousand books will be housed at Cohen Quad, Exeter College’s newest premises, on Walton Street. The library’s remaining books – those that are used less often – will be stored at a facility shared with the Bodleian Library, allowing them to be delivered promptly when needed. A marquee will provide additional study space.’

The real "Mr. Selfridge", or the "Earl of Oxford Street"

Harry Gordon Selfridge, Sr. was born on 11th January 1858, one of three boys. Within months of his birth, the family moved to Jackson, Michigan, as his father had acquired the town's general store. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, his father joined the Union Army. However, he abandoned his family, not returning home after the war ended.

Selfridge's two brothers died at a very young age shortly after the war ended, so Harry became his mother's only child. She found work as a schoolteacher and struggled financially to support both of them. Selfridge and his mother enjoyed each other's company and were good friends; they lived together all their lives

At the age of 10, Selfridge began to contribute to the family income by delivering newspapers. Aged 12, he started working at the Leonard Field's dry-goods store. This allowed him to fund the creation of a boys' monthly magazine with schoolfriend Peter Loomis, making money from the advertising carried within.

Selfridge left school at 14 and found work at a bank in Jackson, and then became a bookkeeper at the local furniture factory of Gilbert, Ransom & Knapp. However, the company closed four months later, and Selfridge moved to Grand Rapids to work in the insurance industry.

In 1876 he started as a stock boy in the wholesale department with Field, Leiter & Company, one of the most successful stores in the city of Chicago. Over the following 25 years, Selfridge worked his way up. He was eventually appointed a junior partner, married Rosalie Buckingham (of the prominent Chicago Buckinghams), and over the next decade, the couple had five children. Selfridge had amassed a considerable personal fortune. In 1904, Harry opened his own department store called Harry G. Selfridge and Co. in Chicago. However, after only two months he sold the store at a profit. He then decided to retire

In 1906, when Selfridge travelled to London on holiday with his wife, he noticed that although the city was a cultural and commercial leader, its stores could not rival Field's in Chicago or the great galleries of Parisian department stores.

Recognizing a gap in the market, Selfridge, who had become bored with retirement, decided to invest £400,000 in a new department store of his own, locating it in what was then the unfashionable western end of London's Oxford Street. The new store opened to the public on 15th March 1909, setting new standards for the retailing business.

Selfridge promoted the radical notion of shopping for pleasure rather than necessity. The store was extensively promoted through advertising. The shop floors were structured so that goods could be made more accessible to customers. There were elegant restaurants with modest prices, a library, reading and writing rooms, special reception rooms for French, German, American and "Colonial" customers, a First Aid Room, and a Silence Room, with soft lights, deep chairs, and double-glazing, all intended to keep customers in the store as long as possible. Staff members were taught to be on hand to assist customers, but not too aggressively, and to sell the merchandise.

Selfridge's prospered during World War I and up to the mid-1930s. The Great Depression was already taking its toll on Selfridge's retail business and his lavish spending had run up a £150,000 debt to his store. He became a British subject in 1937. By 1940, he owed £250,000 in taxes and was in debt to the bank. The Selfridges board forced him out in 1941.

Selfridge's wife Rose died during the influenza pandemic of 1918; his mother died in 1924. As a widower, Selfridge had numerous liaisons, including those with the celebrated Dolly Sisters and the divorcée Syrie Barnardo Wellcome, who would later become better known as the decorator Syrie Maugham. He also began and maintained a busy social life and entertained lavishly both at his home in Lansdowne House, located at 9 Fitzmaurice Place, Mayfair, just off Berkeley Square, and on his private yacht, the SY Conqueror, with VIP guests such as Rudyard Kipling cruising the Mediterranean.

On 8 May 1947, Selfridge died of bronchial pneumonia at his home in Putney, south-west London, aged 89, he was buried in St Mark's Churchyard next to his wife and his mother.

In 1951, the original Oxford Street Selfridges was acquired by the Liverpool-based Lewis's chain of department stores, which was in turn taken over in 1965 by the Sears Group owned by Charles Clore. Expanded under the Sears group to include branches in Manchester and Birmingham, in 2003 the chain was acquired by Canada's Galen Weston for £598 million.

Gothic Revival

Gothic Revival is commonly known as Victorian Gothic. It is also known as Gothic and Jigsaw Gothic. At school, college, and universities it is often referred to as Collegiate Gothic. Gothic Revival is an architectural movement which originated in the late 1740s in England. Its fame grew very fast in the early 19th century unlike the neoclassical styles common at that specific time and thus was one of the most influential styles of the 19th century. . Its roots were intertwined with deeply philosophical movement associated with a re-awakening of High Church. Designs were based on forms and patterns that were used mostly in the Middle Ages. A wide range of buildings were built and furnished during the Gothic Revival style. Serious study was combined with a more fanciful, romantic vision of Medieval chivalry and romance. Gothic buildings from the 12th to 16th century were a huge inspiration to the designers of the 19th-century. The Architectural elements that were applied to many Gothic Revival objects include pointed arches, steep-sloping roofs and decorative tracery . A trademark of the Gothic Revival style was the Furniture with elaborated painted scenes. In the second half of the 19th century there was a huge fascination for historical costume, especially that of the Middle Ages. Fancy dress occasions and parties were extremely famous at the time. The writings of A.W.N. Pugin, had a large impact on the style and theory of the Gothic Revival. Pugin is the person who encouraged architects and designers to work from the fundamental principles of Medieval art which included truth to structure, material and purpose. He was the one that organised the Medieval Court display at the Great Exhibition of 1851. John Ruskin was the most important art critic of his time. His interest in Medieval architecture was awakened by travelling in Europe which is where he made detailed watercolour studies. What Ruskin was mostly interested in was the decoration and colour of buildings. His two most important books are; The Seven Lamps of Architecture and The Stones of Venice. They had a huge impact on the Gothic Revival. Ruskin favored a return to the spiritual values of the Middle Ages which he had felt that had been lost in the mechanised and materialistic times in which he lived. William Burges was one of the most original designers in the 19th century. His work attracted a number of sources, including the arts of the Middle Ages, the Islamic world and East Asia. He designed two of the most opulent Gothic Revival buildings in Britain, Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch. Burges’s designs for furniture and metalwork are both inventive and elaborate. In 1834 a fire destroyed a lot of the old Palace of Westminster, the British parliament building and thus it was later decided that the new buildings should be built in the Gothic Revival style which was considered to be particularly British and so appropriate for the nation’s parliament. Charles Barry was the designer of the buildings and interiors of the new Palace of Westminster. His assistant A. W.N. Pugin was the person who provided much of the Gothic detail. This is the largest Gothic revival building in the world. The 19th century saw a great religious revival due to the fact that churches were restored and many new ones were also built, the majority being in the Gothic Revival style. All Saints’ in Margaret Street, London, was built in the High Victorian Gothic style. It is a development of the Gothic Revival which was less reliant on specific Medieval sources. A very noticeable characteristic of the High Victorian Gothic style is the fact that there are differently coloured bands of bricks on the outside and the polished coloured stone and richly patterned walls and floors on the inside. The 19th century is known as the great age of railway construction. The Grand Hotel which stands before the train shed, was designed by George Gilbert Scott. He is one of the most prolific Gothic Revival architects.

John Pawson strips back 18th-century church in London to celebrate original features

British designer John Pawson has collaborated with architecture studio Thomas Ford & Partners on the sensitive refurbishment of the St John at Hackney church in London.

The overhaul, which is Pawson's first church project in the UK, focuses on reinstating and accentuating the Grade II*-listed building's original design that was hidden by past renovations.

Pawson and Thomas Ford & Partners have also introduced a number of contemporary furnishings and facilities to the church, including a dark oak stage and sound system.

This is to better support the church's function as a place of worship but also an art space and events venue, which has seen it welcome the likes of Coldplay and Florence and the Machine in recent years.

The updated entrance is now accessible by ramps

"The vision driving the refurbishment of this east London church was always of a 'cathedral of creativity', where architecture and people can come together in the richest ways possible, for a variety of purposes and activities, sacred and secular," said Pawson.

"As a designer, it is my belief that such creativity is stimulated and fostered both by the detail of a physical environment and by the character of its atmosphere."

The interiors have been stripped back to its original plan

St John at Hackney is the Anglican parish church of Hackney in east London. Its current form was designed in 1797 by architect James Spiller.

As part of the project, the church's 18th-century exterior and roof have been restored and repaired, while its main entrance portico has been remodelled with ramps for wheelchairs.

Dark oak panels line the walls

Inside, alterations made to the building in recent years have been completely stripped back in order to restore the simplicity of its original Greek Cross plan – a type of church with a square central mass and four volumes of equal length on each side.

Two small chapels in the north and south wings have then been added, alongside the raised stage that doubles as a sanctuary – an area around an altar within a church.

At the rear of the building, a series of compact rooms have been built over four storeys, which include office space, a green room and storage, connected via a new staircase and lift.

To unify each of the new areas with the nave of the church, their walls have all been lined with ribbed, dark oak panels. This also conceals the wiring of new building equipment.

"I have used new architectural elements to define the different spaces and functions within the body of the church," explained Pawson.

The panels have a ribbed finish that echoes the church's columns

Pawson' choice of dark oak panelling takes cues from St John at Hackney's original organ and timber pews on the balcony, while the ribbed detail echoes the fluted finishes of structural columns.

This is designed to reconcile the old elements of the building with the new, while also creating contrast with the otherwise white interiors of the church.

St John at Hackney is complete with a new minimalist, circular font and processional cross designed by Pawson, alongside a light wood altar and matching lectern.

New signage all around the churchyard has been created by EBBA, while Es Devlin is currently developing an installation called Shared Sky that is due for completion in 2021.

Another notable church redesign by Pawson is the minimalist St Moritz Church in Augsburg, Germany. Here, he teamed Portuguese limestone floors with dark-stained wooden furniture and added pieces of onyx over the windows of the building to softly diffuse light.

More recently, he stacked up 61 tree trunks to create a chapel for rest and contemplation on a cycle route in southwest Germany. It is accessed through a rectangular opening carved out of one side of the structure.

As Downton Abbey finally hits the big screen on Friday, you may be interested to know that its glorious location is also home to another British classic.

This beautiful corner of the North Hampshire Downs is also Watership Down country, with its deep green forests and rolling wheat fields inspiring local writer Richard Adams’s classic novel.

Discover it all from the Watership Down Inn, a renovated Victorian pub with rooms, and popular with locals – including Adams, who celebrated his 93rd birthday here, three years before his death in 2016.

Four garden suites have been added to its three existing inn rooms. There’s a sense of mischief here – a huge painted rabbit on the exterior gazes balefully down on to a large outdoor terrace, and rooms are named after the novel’s characters.

The style is modern country. You’ll find original floor tiles and honey-toned wood in the convivial bar and restaurant areas. And the bright, spacious garden suites have cool slate floors, scrubbed-wood furniture and huge bathrooms. Each has decking overlooking the gardens. Chef Steve Gilbert serves hearty classics, as well as vegan curries and salads featuring buffalo bocconi from neighbouring Laverstoke Park Farm, which is owned by former Formula 1 champion Jody Scheckter.

We strolled for 15 minutes, passing 18th Century churches and 19th Century thatched cottages, to the Bombay Sapphire gin distillery. A handsomely restored Georgian mill, today the working distillery features two wonderfully surreal botanical glasshouses. Another short walk away is Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants: a gorgeous nursery (and winner of 22 Chelsea Flower Show golds). Through it all runs the River Test, its fast-flowing waters bursting with trout.

It still powers the distillery, and it’s a lovely seven-mile ‘mill walk’ from there to Whitchurch Silk Mill. Britain’s oldest silk mill, it uses traditional machines to produce material for costume dramas, including Cranford and Titanic.

Ten miles away is Highclere Castle – aka Downton Abbey. Resplendent in Capability Brown-designed gardens, the imposing castle is a hotbed of fine art.

USP: A characterful pub with rooms, close to Watership Down and Downton Abbey locations, with stacks of local attractions.

We finally made it through the outer door of St Wystan’s church in Repton…and stopped. Two huge columns flank the inner door and, scattered around the porch are fragments of ancient masonry. carved medieval grave slabs and Saxon crosses. It was a good start.

Once through the modern inner door that replaced its heavy, barred predecessor, we were on familiar territory, though every church is different and each one holds a portion of a wider history. Repton church is dedicated to St Wystan, a son of the royal Mercian line, who was murdered in 849.

“His corpse was carried to a monastery which was famous in that age, called Repton, and buried in the tomb of his grandfather, King Wiglaf. Miracles from heaven were not wanting in testimony of his martyrdom; for a column of light shot up to heaven from the spot where the innocent saint was murdered, and remained visible to the inhabitants of that place for 30 days.” Florence of Worcester.

The church was first built in the 700s, although much the current fabric of the building is medieval, with 19th century restorations by Arthur Blomfield. The square tower now sports a tall and incongruous spire dating to around 1340 that is visible for miles around.

The font is one of the first things you notice. Like the Cross in the village, it is octagonal, but where the Cross is plain and simple, the font is richly carved and dates only to the nineteenth century.

The stained glass is spectacular. Apart from one small fragment of medieval glass, the windows are Victorian and by Dudley Forsyth and James Powell & Sons. It is unusual to find so many windows by the same maker, and while aesthetically it brings the hotch-potch of history together, it does so at a cost. The character created by the mingling of many eras and makers cannot be replaced.

There are the usual complement of tombs and memorials in the body of the church, some of them impressive. My favourites though are somewhat simpler, although I would like to have words with Gilbert Thacker, whose memorial is an unusual, monochrome one in alabaster. The incised images show Gilbert Thacker, who died in 1563, with his wife, their two children, and a small dog. Thacker inherited the Priory Church and monastic buildings from his father, Thomas, who was Thomas Cromwell’s steward at the time of the Dissolution of the monasteries. The Priory was his ‘reward’ for his part in the destruction and his son, Gilbert, was responsible for pulling down most of the complex of buildings.

There is a rather endearing plaque to a priest and schoolmaster, who linked church and parish ‘by the sunshine of his presence’. Another, to a headmaster of the school, mentions his ‘strict, but kind administration of his trust’ and ‘the respect and affection of his scholars’. This is a blatant example of how the truth of history can be perverted, for the same master was ‘a big, bullying man, a strict disciplinarian and ferocious flogger’. When the boys heard of his illness, they went wild, broke out of school in search of ale and cake, and, at his death, smashed furniture. Not a great legacy of ‘kindness’ and ‘trust’…

By far the most noble of the memorials, though, is to a knight. The full length effigy sleeps to one side of the chancel arch, his armour marred by the graffiti of countless generations of schoolboys. There is no name carved upon his tomb, but from his arms and insignia, he is thought to be one of the Fraunceys of Foremark, probably Thomas, who died in 1482. Nicholas Fitzherbert married Robert’s daughter and thus inherited Tissington, where his descendants still reside and which we had visited quite recently.

Not only does Tissington give us a bit of a connection to our patch… but we had seen the family arms at Breedon and remarked upon them. The Frauncey family name is not far removed from that of my writing partner…

We wandered the church as we do, taking in all the details… but really, there was only one thing we wanted to see…the crypt. On my first visit, it had been locked and I was really hoping that this time, we would be lucky and could see it together…
