Sanmao’s “Stories of the Sahara”, 《撒哈拉的故事》,素人渔夫 Amateur fishing man, Tâm Anh translated.
Once on Sunday, Jose was at company for over-time work, whole day not home.
I, to pass the time, took out all the money Jose has earnt during this year from March till now, counted carefully, noted down on a blank sheet of paper, awaiting him to come back.
To the evening, Jose was home, I placed the note paper in front of him, saying: “You see, during this half a year we have earnt, sum up, this so much money.”
He took a glance on the calculation I did, very glad, saying: “Hard to imagine, we have earnt this so much money; enduring the hard days in the desert, it worths our efforts.”
“Let’s eat out today, anyway we have this much money.” He joyfully proposed.
I knew he wanted to take me to dine at the National Hotel, very quickly I changed clothes to go out with him; this kind of reality was once upon a time.
“We want best-quality red wine, seafood soup, beef-steak for me, four helpings of prawns for my wife, ice-cream cake as deserts, also four helpings, thank you!” Jose said to the waiter.
“Lucky, today I have not eaten any the whole day, now we should have a big meal.” I whispered to Jose.
National Hotel was one under the organization of the Spanish Government; the dining hall was decorated very nicely like an Arabic royal palace, with very local ambiance, very comfortable soft lights, customers were not many; in here the atmosphere was fresh, no smell of dirt, knife and fork are kept clean to snow-like shining, table cloth was well ironed, soft music sound was like stream water flowing. I was sitting there, almost forgot we were in the desert, but seemed going back to our good old days.
After a while, foods were served, on a nice silver plate, a large row of fried prawns lined with green lettuce, glass filled with dark red wine.
“Ah! The blue bird of happiness is coming!” I exclaimed in excitement, looking at the dish.
“So delicious, from now on we should come here more often!” Jose sounded very generous that evening, like a tycoon.
Living in the desert for a certain time, it makes people learn a good thing: any little real-life enjoyment can bring about exceedingly heart-felt satisfaction and make people fly high. In other words, we take our senses more serious than our head.
Dinner finished, spent on it a fortune, we were very happy walking home, that evening I was a very happy person.
The following day, we of course ate at home; on the dinner plate there was one baked potato cake, one bread, a pot of water.
“We’ll share, wait I divide, this cake, you eat 2/3, I take 1/3.”
I was one hand sharing the potato cake, the other hand placing the bread in whole in the bowl for Jose, made it look quite full.

Till he read to ——“car maintenance 15,000 kuai, gasoline half year 24,000——” his voice was louder; he picked himself up.

Only us, can be considered as people who understand 'the art of living', hard days still we can endure, our living still can be considered as not too bad.
I was keeping quiet listened to Jose while he was making announcement on plan of expense cut. Then, I started to warn him: “This too economical, you are not afraid three months later we would either become crazy or commit suicide?���
Jose forced a smile: “Indeed, during holidays if we do not go out, we would be living sad to death.”
“Think about this, we do not go to Algeria that direction, travel inland no more; we go to the seaside. Why not take advantage of the over 1,000 km coastline here; we should go there to explore.”
“Go to the seaside, travel through the desert a round trip gasoline also costs a lot.”

Jose saw my big crab, again went to catch, got nearly 20 black-grey little crabs. He said: “The small one is called Nicholas, compared to big ones they are more delicious.”
The tide was gradually rising; we retreated to under the cliff, scraped off fish scales, washed the fish belly, full a big bag. I took trousers off, two trouser legs made a knot, poured all the crabs in, the bucket was also fastened on the rope, that way we climbed up the cliff. That weekend going out on exploration for the first time, could be considered as return with full load.
On the way home, I urged Jose: “Quick, quick, we drive back then call colleagues in the single dormitory to come for dinner.”
“You do not do salted fish?” Jose asked.

“Sanmao, today work seriously, you need to give good hands.” Jose was in earnest.
We were standing on the rocky edge; Jose went down diving; each time he caught a fish, rose up, he threw it to the waterside; I quickly came up to collect, kneed on the rock, I used a knife to scrape fish scales, washed fish belly, cleaned it up, then put the fish into a plastic bag.
Scraped two or three very big fish, my hands were already scratched bleeding, dip into sea water oddly hurtful.
Jose was under water floating sinking, continuously threw fish up onto shore; I worked recklessly, placed the well-cleaned fish lined up neatly in the bag.
“Earning money is not easy!” I shook my head talking to myself, knees started to swell red.

Car passed by castle-like boundering walls of the National Hotel, I suddenly got an idea, loudly called ——“Stop——"
Jose stopped the car; I barefoot got off, turned my head to look inside the gate.
“Hello, hello, ——” I softly called to Antonio at the counter.
“Ah, Sanmao!” He greeted loudly.
“Shuzzz, do not shout, where’s the back door?” I softly asked him.
“Back door? Why do you want to go back door?”

“Pug.” I loudly called out to him.
“Do you want to buy fresh fish?” I was so much hopeful, asked.
“Fish, where?” He asked.
“Inside our car, there are more than 20.”
Pug stared at me, shook his head strongly. “Sanmao, more than 3,000 persons in this army group, eat your more than 20 fish, enough?” He rejected.
“This is not necessarily; you first take to cook to see! Jesus’ 5 cakes, 2 fish, were enough to feed his more than 5,000 persons; how do you say?” I again asked him.
“Let me tell you, you go to post office front door to sell; over there most people passing by.” Pug showed us a way out. Of course, our selling target is Europeans; Sahara people do not eat fish.
So we again went to the stationery shop, bought a black board, a few pieces of chalk, again to an acquainted grocery we borrowed a scale.
On the black board, we drewn a jumping red fish, again wrote "Fresh fish for sale, 50 kuai per kilogram.”
When we drove to the post office front door, already 5 o’clock in the afternoon; air-mails, air-packages were arriving; a large crowd of people was there opening their mail-box, very much bustling. We stopped the car, put the black board in front of car window, car back door was opened up. Completed with these, face already blushed quite a lot; we ran to the sidewalk across the street to sit down, not even dare to look at walking people on the street.
A crowd of people one group to another walked by; no one stopped to buy fish. Sitting there for a while, Jose said to me: “Sanmao, didn’t you say we are amateur people? Amateurs don’t have to live by selling spare-time stuff!”
“Go home?” Really I also ran out of energy.
Right at that time, a colleague of Jose walked by, saw us he came to greet: “Ah! Out for fresh air?”
“No.” Jose shyly stood up.
“Are selling fish.” I pointed to our car on opposite side across the road.
This colleague was a single, also a rough-and-ready kind person. He walked out taking a look at the black board, again looked at car back space, got the situation, immediately he walked back, grasped us both across the street to the opposite site.
“Selling fish ah, you need to calling out to sell! You two are shy like this do not work. Come, come, I'll help you.” This colleague in passing hands pulled a fish out, held it in his hand, yelled at high pitch: “Yu——yo, sell fresh fish yo! 75 kuai per kilogram yo ——aiyo——fish ah!” He even took his own initiative raised the price.
The crowd was attracted by his yelling, immediately gathered up around; we overjoyed at the turn of our selling: more than 20 fish was a little thing, just after a while all were sold out.
We were sitting on the ground counting money, more than 3,000 kuai; then again looked around for Jose’s colleague; he has already walked far away with a grin.
“Jose, we should remember to thank him!” I told Jose.
Back to home, we were already exhausted. After a shower, I was in a towel yukata to the kitchen boiled a wok, put in a pack of noddle.
“Eat this?” Jose was unhappily.
“Just let's eat something. I'm almost exhausted to death.” I in fact did not even want to eat any.
“From early morning working that hard till now, you only gave me noddle, not eat.” He was mad, put on clothes to go out.
“Where are you going?” I shouted.
“I go eating out.” He said firmly, sound as hard as cement.
I could only also change clothes, chased him up, together we went out; the so-called eating out, of course could only be one place to go—— restaurant at the National Hotel.
At the restaurant, I whispered to Jose: “This world there’s only you this kind of person. Order the least expensive dish, do you hear me?”
Right at that moment, one of Jose’s bosses was clapping hands walking over, loudly he called out: “What a coincidence! What a coincidence! I am having no companion for dinner tonight; we three persons together then.” He by himself was talking and taking a seat.
“I heard today kitchen has fresh fish; how do you think, we take three fish to taste, this kind of fresh fish, not often seen around here in the desert.” He was again by himself talking.
The boss, accustomed to being a boss, forgot that he should also look at other people's face. Not a word to us yet, he said to the waitress: “Salad, 3 fish, wine, now, deserts later.”
The person-on-duty in the dining hall was exactly the one at noon in the kitchen buying fish from us; he was accidentally walking by our table, seeing Jose and I we were eating the fish we sold which now were served on dish at 20 times more of the price; his jaw dropped, like he was looking at two crazy people.
After the dinner, we and Jose’s boss competed for the bill, result Jose won, used up the money from selling fish at the post office front door to pay, only left some change money. Just then I sensed, these fish no matter was sold at 50 or 75 kuai per kilogram, was still sold at such a loss; we, after all, were in the desert.
The following day early morning, we overslept till late. I got up making some coffee, washing clothes; Jose was still on bed, saying to me: “Lucky, still we have that bill at the National Hotel we can collect; otherwise yesterday a whole day was miserable enough; gasoline cost we also had to offset, not to mention so much tireness and hard work.”
“You're saying the bill——that bill——”
I screamed, rushed to the bathroom, washing machine had already closed; out of the load covered up with soap foam, I took out my trousers, put my hands in the pockets to feel the inside——that bill has already been soaked with water, become soft and white a little heap; want to put them together also could not anymore.
“Jose, the last fish has also slipped away! We again will have to eat potato cake then.” I sat on the stone steps of the bathroom, crying and laughing out.

Agilenano - News: Because your home is now your workplace, gym, coffee shop, and primary care facility, you’ll need to keep it in good working order.
Under normal circumstances, “honey-do” lists and “weekend warrior” projects often get pushed aside by the daily grind. But in this bizarre new pandemic reality, that grind has ground to a halt. If there’s an upside, it’s that you have both time and incentive to knock out some of those around-the-house chores you may have put off. We spoke to a project manager and lead carpenter with a home remodeling business to find out what projects anyone can do to keep their homes in tip-top shape. And don’t worry if DYI isn’t your thing. Not only are these 11 tips easy for most anyone, but we even included a simple list of beginner tools to help build an essential toolkit you can be proud of. 11 Easy & Essential Home Maintenance Projects We spoke with John Wagner, a partner and project manager at the Twin Cities-based Waxwing Woodworking Inc. He identified 11 projects every homeowner should do to keep their house running efficiently and safely. And if you’re a renter, you can still check these things and let your landlord know. And while Wagner said you could easily get all these done during these social distancing mandates — some take as little as 30 seconds — at the very least, you could use this time to check all the items and make a plan for the next couple months. 1. Change your home air filter Filters should be changed monthly, and you should always have a spare one on hand. If you don’t, check the filter size and head on down to your friendly neighborhood filter (hardware/home improvement) store and pick up a bulk pack. Unless you have acute sensitivities to specific particulates, a filter with a “MERV” rating of 5 to 8 will be fine. A higher MERV rating will trap finer particles, but at some cost to the efficiency of your furnace. If you’re not sure what filter to use with your system, check the service manual or give a local heating contractor a call. Once you have the new filter, remove the old one and replace it, taking care to orient the filter for the direction of airflow. If you don’t have the size of the filter and direction of airflow written on your filter cover, now’s a good time to bust out the marker and get that done. 2. Clean gutters, check downspouts Take a walk around the perimeter of your house and check your gutters and downspouts. If you didn’t clean your gutters after the leaves fell last year, get to work. But don’t just leave that crap on the ground! (More on that later.) Downspouts should extend a minimum of 5 feet from the foundation to keep water from working its way into your basement. If you have a finished basement, a nice, long downspout could wind up saving you a ton of money. Most basement moisture problems arise from bulk water intrusion caused by bad slope and drainage. If your soil doesn’t slope away from your house (6 inches over 10 feet), that’s a major issue to address. Quick note: If you live in a cold climate, you should have a dehumidifier running from spring through fall (especially if you have a finished basement). 3. Prep garden, remove yard matter near your house Once you’ve thrown all your gutter goo onto the ground, pick it up. Rake up the old, decaying stuff from around the house so that soil isn’t building up against the house. If you put mulch around the house, it’s good to maintain 6 inches of clearance below the siding, especially if your siding material is a wood or wood composite. Personally, I like a 12- to 18-inch bed of crushed rock or gravel between the foundation and plants. That buffer will help prevent moisture and pests from working into the house. Plus, this is also a great time to plan for your vegetable garden. If the soil has thawed enough where you are, mix in some compost, and you’ll be ready to plant when the weather allows. Finally, now’s a great time for tree trimming. If you’re up to it and can do it safely, trim away dead or decaying branches and manage the growth of fruit trees. The University of Minnesota Extension has excellent resources for managing trees and gardening. 4. Clean air-conditioning coils First, you’ll want to clear away any plant growth around the condenser. Hook up your hose and decide how clean you want the condenser. You can either take the cover off (be sure to flip the breaker off inside) and clean from the inside out, or you can spray from the outside with the cover still on. Either way, spray at a downward angle until clean. If you’ve removed the cover to clean, you should be really proud of yourself — unless you damage the thin aluminum fins by folding them over. 5. Vacuum refrigerator coils Carefully walk out your refrigerator and start suckin’! Pull off the cover on the front that overlaps the wheels and vacuum that out. At the back of the fridge, vacuum the coils and motor. (No need to look behind the fridge, there’s definitely nothing there. Nope.) Just slide the fridge back. Be sure the fridge has an inch or so of clearance above it to allow warm air to escape. 6. Check siding for holes or other entrances for vermin, seal them If you had any winter guests this year, now’s a good time to check around the house to see how they got in. Start by following #3 above. Then, check for holes in the siding, gaps below the last course of siding (could be loose bricks or cracked stucco), or gaps that might have formed in your soffits. You can fix most means of ingress with better landscaping, steel wool, a good-quality caulk, or spray foam. Now, if you had squirrels or raccoons get into your attic through holes in your soffit or fascia, you might want to call a contractor. 7. Summerize snowblower, prep lawnmower for season If you’re not expecting more snow, get your snowblower ready to hibernate. Remove the fuel that’s in it and empty the fuel into a safe storage container (you can dump the fuel from the snowblower into your gas can). Don’t be a jerk neighbor and run your snowblower for 2 hours to burn off the fuel. Also, get some fuel stabilizer and pour that into your gas can before filling it up with gas. Next, clean up your snowblower. Lubricate any parts that move, pull the spark plug, and get a bit of oil worked through the motor by pulling the cord a couple of times. You might as well check to see if your augur blade is worn down or damaged; the same goes for the scraper blade. As for the lawnmower, if it ran well the year before, you should be able to fuel it up and get it going. If not, it’s generally a simple procedure to pull and clean the carburetor, replace the spark plug, and complete an oil change. Now, if you’re feeling frisky, you can check and sharpen the mower blade. Disconnect the spark plug, flip the mower, and remove the blade (you’ll need a wrench). Clamp the blade in a vise or clamp it to a sturdy table. With an angle grinder and a sanding pad, give the blade a few passes at a 30-degree angle. If you’re left with a rough burr on the back side of the edge, knock it off with a few passes of a file. If you don’t have an angle grinder, you can use a sharpening stone or a file, but it takes much longer. 8. Check washing machine filter, clean dryer vent This one is pretty straightforward. First, check your washer’s manual on how to clean the filter. It will probably say something smug, like, “Clean this filter monthly.” But there’s another inlet filter that’s also super easy to clean. Turn off the water supply, disconnect the hose, and remove any particulates. This is an especially important task if you have older, galvanized supply lines in your home. Cleaning the dryer vent is super important, too. First of all, your vent should be a rigid pipe, and the joints should be lapped so that lint isn’t accumulating at the edges. Disconnect the pipe from the dryer (just pull, and you might have to cut some tape) and check the vent on the dryer. Clear or dirty? Any toys in there? Next, take a look into the pipe. Slide a vacuum hose up there with a brush attachment. Now, head outside to the dryer’s exhaust port. On the outside of the house, check to see if the damper closes smoothly or if lint has accumulated there and was letting freezing-cold air into your house all winter. Clean it. Reattach the pipe and re-tape those joints with a quality foil tape. If you have a flexible vent pipe, switch to a rigid pipe. Rigid pipe will vent more efficiently, trap less lint, and is overall safer. 9. Check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors Test ‘em all! Change the batteries. If any of the units are old, replace them. Many new units come with sealed batteries and are good for 10 years. You should have a minimum of one smoke and one carbon monoxide (CO) detector on each floor, a smoke detector inside and outside of each bedroom, and a CO detector within 10 feet of each bedroom and sleeping area. 10. Upgrade your thermostat Get and install a smart thermostat. Personally, I like the ecobee. Chances are that your energy provider offers some kind of rebate, which will offset some of the initial cost. It proved super easy to install in my home, even though I didn’t have a C-wire. The savings started immediately, the unit is super intuitive and functional, it looks nice, and the sensors prioritize heating and cooling occupied spaces. Why do it? Because a super-easy way to save money and energy, as well as limit emissions, is to not be such an energy hog. Sign up for off-peak energy and adjust your thermostat settings so that your house is 65 degrees in the winter and 76 degrees in the summer. Some people may require different temps for health reasons, but your house doesn’t have to be 70 degrees all year ’round. 11. Check water heater The more adventurous among you may want to try a little water heater maintenance. Three things to do here: Check the pressure relief valve, check/replace the sacrificial anode, and flush the water heater. Testing the pressure relief valve will get a bit of scalding-hot water on the floor. So wear sturdy shoes. This one is better to watch — I recommend the trove of good info on the This Old House channel on YouTube. This is really a show, don’t tell fix. Check out some of the channel’s videos below. So if you have the luxury right now, you could start a savings account for your home. A good rule of thumb is to save 1.5-2% of your home’s value every year. If some of the systems in the house aren’t in great shape or are older, save a little more. For some perspective, a full replacement of a forced-air furnace and AC condenser can easily run up to $10,000 or more. Basic Toolkit for Home Maintenance To tackle most home improvement projects, you’ll need some rudimentary tools. Gaster leaned over the edge of the railings, a cigarette to his teeth that filled his ribcage with smoke. Wisps of the gray vapor leaked from the openings of his white turtleneck, only to be lost in the air wavered by the Core’s heat. He let a sigh, the grin on his skull stretching more as his frame relaxed in the heat.
The day had been relatively sluggish for Gaster. With the Core long since completed, he found himself at ease for the past few month, years of overworking himself having taken its toll on his soul. As dull as they could be at times, he still enjoyed the slow days, his only real responsibilities being checking up on his assistants and the maintenance of his pride and joy. Despite his protest, Asgore had strictly ordered him to take it easy for now, wanting him to recover from almost killing himself from exhaustion. So, as of now, Gaster executed his responsibilities and made sure everything was in order. That was what he was doing this day, and he expected it to be just the same as any other day.
“It looks great, Doc,” his assistant commented, approaching his superior with a small smile on his face. A smaller rabbit monster from Snowdin, Cot was a cheerful and eager young mind, if not just a bit on the dull side when it came to large projects such as this. “Not a single pipe burst in nearly a month.” Gaster couldn’t help but grin to himself, leaning further onto the railing overlooking the magma pit that the entire structure was perched over. The hot material could be heard moving sluggishly through the pipes, being used to power the entire Underground. A feeling of pride welled up inside of him as he looked upon the well-running machines of Hotland, the fruits of his hard labor. “Everything is running smoothly,” he hummed, his magic spelling the symbols directly above him for the other to read. Everyone who knew the monster would have to be able to decipher these symbols if they truly wanted to communicate with him, as his natural dialect was almost indecipherable.
“Go home,” he told his assistant. “You’ve earned it for today. I’ll wrap up with few more status checks of each focal point. Should only take a good fifteen minutes.” His assistant nodded dutifully before wishing him well and leaving for the day. Gaster watched him leave, finishing up his cigarette and crushing it between his phalanges. The heat didn’t bother him; it didn’t bother any skeleton, really, as their bones were rather tough and resistant to extreme temperatures. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the crumpled up filter into the heat below, soon to burn and be forgotten. He watched the scorching magma bubble and churn, finding a soothing comfort in it. It calmed him in a way.
As he had said he would, he made his rounds through the Core, making sure everything was in a perfect state before he could leave for the day and go home for a well deserved nap. However, just as he was about to hand up his lab coat and head for the door, he suddenly heard a loud thump in one of the pipes. Gaster jumped slightly and furrowed his brow ridge, looking over at the array of metal tubes that were used to transport the magma around the Core. His eyelights quickly inspected them for any trace of a collapse or dent in the sturdy metal, but it all looked clear. It must have just been a rock that had gotten caught in the flow of the lava, not yet molten by the heat. Perhaps it had fallen from the roof of the cavern, quickly sucked up by the pipes underneath the Core.
He let out a sigh and turned back around to grab his work satchel, when he heard it again. It was a loud thud, like something heavy had crashed into the inside of one of the large pipes, this time further down the system than before. It was as if the sound had moved with the flow of lava. However, when he checked again, there was no damage to the pipes, which is something a large rock would have cause should it have hit the metal with such force. Despite the lack of damage, his curiosity and worry grew and he decided to follow the pipes back to the center to see what exactly was causing the noise. His main guess as of now was that somehow a large rock had been sucked into the pipes and needed to be removed. It wouldn’t be the first time, but damn was it a pain.
As it turns out, he got his answer sooner than he had expected.
He followed the metal pipes at the same pace as the noises, the thumping slowly growing louder and louder with Gaster’s worry directly increasing as they went on. He prepared a few bones and magic hands in case something gave way. Pipe bursts were unexpected and needed to be fixed immediately lest they risk the Core becoming unstable, which would lead to power outages and just a general mess of a problem all around. Luckily, there were emergency cooling systems and tools all around.
Funnily enough, everything seemed just fine, despite the banging.
