ok hear me out you guys keep asking and i don’t have anything proper that i could offer you just yet BUT i saw an ask a while ago where someone said lewis isn’t going to renew his contract next year and saying “i won’t join another team” isn’t saying “i’ll be here next year i trust this team” etc etc etc and like, i hate myself for it but walk with me for a second here……………..

Lewis is the one to drop the bombshell of his retirement. Not his camp, not Merc, not PR. There is no tidy Instagram post in black and teal, no quote on quote, no text box announcing the retirement of one of the greatest. It’s Lewis who types it up, a hundred words max, and before he puts it on his story he calls Toto and lets him know.

Toto is in his office in Brackley, behind his big desk, glass walls, open door policy, looking out at a bunch of his employees steadily working away and none of them realise, none of them understand what is happening in the very moment he picks up the phone, what it does to him to hear the words, “I’m sorry man” and “I don’t wanna be the next Alonso” and “I can’t do another season of this” and “I need to let it go”. Toto’s world shifts, bends, and slowly glides off its axis. A funny joke, he thinks at first, before the realisation hits.

Toto has experienced many a crisis in his life. Some of them more serious, more real than others, but each one of them prepared him for the next, for what’s to come. His body catches up quicker than his brain. It’s the physical signs first, of going into fight or flight. Blood pumping, trouble breathing, sweaty hands, mouth dry. Racing heart. Funny expression. A racing heart. He’s always thought of himself as having a racer’s heart, especially in moments like this. He can calm himself, he can self regulate. He can manipulate himself, breathe through it, pretend he’s behind the wheel, pretend this is a life or death split second kind of decision calling for nothing but calm and steady hands.

He does; breathe through it. If there is one thing he is, steadfast and unswerving, it’s a leader. Responsibility sits tight in his neck as he seeks out his team, first the closest five, then senior personnel. He is not going to make this into a huge thing - it is - but he will have to make his people aware before Lewis lets the rest of the world in on his secret. Word is going to spread fast.

It does; spread fast. Toto was given an hour. He uses it wisely, types out a company wide announcement, and then another email, a more personal one, to the PR department. Tells them to leave things until tomorrow. There is no point in rushing this.

Toto leaves his office at 5 on the dot. Turns off his computer, does not take any documents, does not take any work to look at later, just shoves his travel mug into his bag, grabs his jacket and makes sure to turn the lights off on his way out.

When he gets home, Christian’s Range Rover is parked where it’s always parked, in the left space next to the stone steps leading up to the front door. It stands a little wonky today, the left front tyre kissing the grass. It’s an unusual sight. Christian is very particular about his car, and his lawn.

The dogs yap at his feet when Toto walks through the door, drops his shit on the sideboard with no mind to clean up after himself. He drags his feet through the foyer and into the kitchen. It’s still light out, it’s July, and Christian has opened the patio doors to let the warm summer breeze in.

His face has something critical to it when he locks eyes with Toto, crow’s feet deeper than usual as he watches him approach. Toto can feel the weight of his gaze on him, how he drags it up his body, down, up again, only to settle on his face for good.

“Colleague or husband?” Christian asks.

“Husband,” Toto says and folds himself into Christian’s opening arms, tucks his face into the crook of his neck and inhales deeply, allowing himself to just close his eyes and breathe. No need for pretences here. Car in the gravel, engine off, steering wheel dislodged and hands in his lap. It’s okay if his fingers shake. Christian knows he’s not a racer by heart.

Since Vaughn is a coffee-holic, I came up with a HC that he collects fun mugs! Not just any random mugs, but cute mugs with funny quotes, logo's, or just cool one's that he thinks are worth collecting. He has cartoon mugs, mugs in the shapes of animals, he and Goro have a matching cat mug (but Vaughn's is red and Goro's is black), he has an Aldecaldo's mug that Panam made for him. Whenever he traveled, he bought mugs from antique shops. he has a whole cabinet filled with them! :)

Well he's not really a "creature" type of person aha. Also, the only rat he adores is Cockroach, otherwise he steers clear. He's not scared of any of them either, he's pretty used to seeing weird crawlies around NC on a daily basis. He does find snakes fascinating, but he wouldn't keep one as a pet. He'll just admire from a distance.

I love this question, uwu. Vaughn smells so good. *twirls hair* He smells like nature a lot, but in a good way. He smells like freshly mown grass and rain water, mixed with his cologne that he wears, which has a faint musky smell to it but also it kind of gives off a hint of floral. (It's also a major aphrodisiac to a certain guy hehe). Some people often wonder how the hell he manages to smell so good when he's always out in the desert getting dirty, but he never reveals his secrets, lol.

A plus one? Nah, and Goro had none of those when they met and got together. It was never something Vaughn really cared much for, even though he's covered in both. He thinks tattoo and piercings are hot for sure but it isn't something he prefers. As a matter of fact, half the people he hooked up with in the past, 98% of them didn't have one or the other, or either.

One of the nurses came by my room earlier to tell me I had a phone call, so I went to the phone room. Surprisingly enough, it was Jeff. He was all like, “So, how’re you making out in there?” Yeah, I could practically hear him cackling internally. The son of a bitch is getting a real kick out of this shit. At least someone’s laughing, I guess. I practically hissed into the phone, like, “I’m bored out of my fucking mind, no thanks to you.” He’s laughing, like, “Welcome to my life, man!” I was smiling despite myself, but at least he couldn’t tell.

I asked him if he wanted to go downstairs and watch some of his favorite movies after breakfast, knowing full well there was no way he would say no to making me sit through The Emperor's New Groove again (I reached acceptance on that last night, so I was prepared). We went downstairs and he wrapped himself up in a blanket like a five-year-old and sat next to me on the couch while we watched a cartoon Incan clone of him tyrannically run an empire and then promptly get turned into a llama. He can quote this entire movie. I cracked up a couple of times despite myself.

Secure (insecure)

I got into it a bit with Jeff just now because he left the house yesterday afternoon and didn’t come back overnight. When he came home, I asked him where he was. He just shrugged and said he was out with friends. I asked him which friends. He laughed out loud and told me I was acting like a jealous boyfriend. I got mad, raised my voice, and basically said, “I’m sorry for getting a little concerned considering what happened the last time you left the house and didn’t come home.” He just stared me down for a good ten seconds, and then started laughing. I told him it wasn’t funny. He said, “Yes, it is funny. You think I’m suddenly going to get my ass handed to me every time I go out? Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?” I just walked out and came up to my room. I already feel terrible. I shouldn’t have brought it up. I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with me. I’m trying to resist going back out there right now to try to talk to him and apologize for being an insecure piece of shit. I need to give him some time to cool off.

Strength

I brought him a travel mug full of coffee for the way back, but I made sure to make it regular strength just to annoy him a little. It definitely annoyed me to have to get up at five in the fucking morning because this jackass can't leave other people's shit the fuck alone.

I don’t know how many times we’re going to have to do this before he gets it into his thick head that maybe this shit isn’t the best use of his time. He needs to get a damn hobby or something.

Originating in Baldur’s Gate as just another second-story gang, they eventually came to specialize in brokering confidential and illicit information for the criminal underworld. After operating alongside Nine-Fingers Keene for years upon years within Baldur’s Gate, the Roses infiltrated Waterdeep — and, more specifically, the Xanathar’s Thieves’ Guild. They operated out of both cities for around a decade before relocating the entirety of their operation to Waterdeep. They never returned. According to Nine-Fingers Keene, they remained loyal to her until the end.

Much of the Roses’ true history is all but lost to the ashes. What can be agreed upon is this: they were very well-respected by Nine-Fingers, and the Guild leader before her. The Roses were known for their discretion, their creativity, and their tight-knit sense of community. Save for one exception, they only ever had seven members at any given time: one for each of the seven capital virtues. Upon joining the gang, each Rose gave up her name in favor of her virtue. Be it by design or by chance, these women were never true to the virtues they embodied. Perhaps that was the whole point.

According to records kept by Bursar Uktar of the Nine-Fingers guild, the last-known Roses were as follows:

Since Vaughn is a coffee-holic, I came up with a HC that he collects fun mugs! Not just any random mugs, but cute mugs with funny quotes, logo's, or just cool one's that he thinks are worth collecting. He has cartoon mugs, mugs in the shapes of animals, he and Goro have a matching cat mug (but Vaughn's is red and Goro's is black), he has an Aldecaldo's mug that Panam made for him. Whenever he traveled, he bought mugs from antique shops. he has a whole cabinet filled with them! :)

There was a fearful mess in the room, and piles of unwashed crocks in the kitchen.

This is in contrast to their hair-raising spic-and-span cleaning last night. Dwarves play fast and loose with guest obligations.

"Bravo!" said Balin who was standing at the inn door looking out for him.

Balin must have watched Bilbo's whole mad dash, and sounds pretty amused :D

There was a very small pony, apparently for Bilbo.

It's just funny that Bilbo is so small he can't even ride a normal-sized pony. Really puts Bullroarer's immensity into perspective.

His only comfort was he couldn't be mistaken for a dwarf, as he had no beard.

Does he not wish to be mistaken for a dwarf as a matter of general course, or does this come specifically after being familiarized with Thorin & Co.?

They had not been riding very long, when up came Gandalf very splendid on a white horse. He had brought a lot of pocket-handkerchiefs, and Bilbo's pipe and tobacco.

A kind gesture, no doubt. Now, did Gandalf remain behind knowing that gathering Bilbo's effects would take longer than 10 minutes, or did he also enjoy sending him off to run? Or did he not want to give him a ride on his horse? Or some combination?

At first they had passed through hobbit-lands, a wide respectable country inhabited by decent folk, with good roads, an inn or too, and now and then a dwarf or a farmer ambling by on business.

So dwarves aren't uncommon in hobbit-lands, though other races do seem to be.

Also the mischief seemed to have got into the fire. Dwarves can make a fire almost anywhere out of almost anything, wind or no wind; but they could not do it that night, not even Oin and Gloin, who were especially good at it. Then one of the ponies took fright at nothing and bolted.

This doesn't sound purely mundane. Actually, it doesn't really sound like the trolls, either. The pony, maybe, though the trolls are still far off, but surely trolls don't have a fire-damping AoE.

Others said: "These parts are none too well known, and are too near the mountains. Travellers seldom come this way now. The old maps are no use: things have changed for the worse and the road is unguarded. They have seldom even heard of the king round here, and the less inquisitive you are as you go along, the less trouble you are likely to find."

What makes the mountains scary? Trolls? Smaug? And by the way, which king?

"Bilbo Baggins, a bur--a hobbit," said poor Bilbo,

He's warming up to his role pretty quickly! This and his decision to pickpocket the trolls.

Trolls seem to just spring fully formed from the mountains, with names and identities and clothes and appreciation of food and wealth. Why is this sentence in present tense?

Trolls simply detest the very sight of dwarves (uncooked).

This despite not recognizing a hobbit at all. I wonder if it's anything to do with the dwarves' mining activities.

"Dawn take you all, and be stone to you!" said a voice that sounded like William's. But it wasn't.

I'm not quoting it all, but Gandalf must be a pretty good imitator, getting all the trolls' voices, including the accent, well enough to trick them even while they're on guard for more voices from the shadows. The only question is if that's magic, or a mundane party trick.

They searched about, and soon found the marks of trolls' stony boots going away through the trees. He held out a largish key, though no doubt William had thought it very small and secret. It must have fallen out of his pocket, very luckily, before he was turned to stone.

So trolls have stony boots even before turning to stone themselves, and it sounds like their clothes turn to stone with them? That or the lucky part is just that falling to the ground made the key more noticeable. My guess is that the key is a secret from the other trolls, but if it's meant to be hidden in the event of a mugging, it raises the question of what would scare a troll. Particularly given that so far the only way to fight a troll has been with trickery.

"As I was saying I met two of Elrond's people. They were hurrying along for fear of the trolls. It was they who told me that three of them had come down from the mountains and settled in the woods not far from the road: they had frightened everyone away from the district, and they waylaid strangers."

Even elves fear trolls, and their emergence from the mountains is an event worth noticing. Trolls are an uncommon and fearsome sight. Also, someone's got close enough to confirm their number.

So, I love The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings, but I haven't read them since I was a kid. Obviously, a reread is in order, and that's how I'm getting myself out of my months-long non-reading rut. To increase my absorption and retention, I'm also doing a book journal! And at my dear bestie @hartmannyoukaigirl's suggestion 💖, I'm posting a bit of it here.

This will just be some noteworthy quotes and a bit of my thoughts on them. If something I mentioned seems obvious, it's because it's been such a long time. If I don't mention something, it might be because I've already seen it discussed around here frequently or otherwise that it's obvious, or that I've noted the quote for myself but don't have anything to say about it.

The Hobbit, Chapter 1 - "An Unexpected Party"

There is little or no magic about them, except the ordinary everyday sort which helps them to disappear quietly and quickly when large stupid folk like you and me come blundering along, making a noise like elephants which they can hear a mile off. one morning long ago in the quiet of the world, when there was less noise and more green, and the hobbits were still numerous and prosperous

These quotes make it sound like The Hobbit would have taken place on Earth, not Middle Earth, like a more usual fairy tale with imps and brownies and the implication that if you believe hard enough maybe you can still see them. Placing it in Middle Earth makes it sound like inter-racial relations declined some time after the events of LotR. Sad to imagine :(

It was often said (in other families) that long ago one of the Took ancestors must have taken a fairy wife. That was, of course, absurd, but certainly there was still something not entirely hobbitlike about them, and once in a while members of the Took-clan would go and have adventures.

Of course this quote has been discussed endlessly, but I'm just going to say that given that a fairy wife is clearly absurd, and yet the Tooks are certainly unhobbitlike, I have to wonder what the true reason is for their proclivities. And is the absurdity of a fairy wife the existence of fairies or the willingness of a hobbit to marry one?

"Not the Gandalf who was responsible for so many quiet lads and lasses going off into the Blue for mad adventures? Anything from climbing trees to visiting elves--or sailing in ships, sailing to other shores! Bless me, life used to be quite inter--I mean, you used to upset things badly in these parts once upon a time."

Even climbing a tree is an adventure. What occasion did Gandalf have to cause a hobbit to climb a tree? Was that even intended as an adventure or was it just so bizarre that it stuck in Bilbo's memory? Hobbits have visited elves, perhaps as recently as within the last 50 years. Were these "quiet" hobbits the aforementioned Tooks, or genuinely respectable and supposedly entirely unadventurous hobbits? And Bilbo is clearly more adventurous then he'd like to believe; is that just his Tookishness or is that common to even ordinary hobbits?

"Dwalin and Balin here already, I see," said Kili. "Some four, I should say by the sound," said Fili. "Besides, we saw them coming along behind us in the distance."

I'm not quoting it all, but the dwarves all come in separate small groups, and though travelling close together, aren't coordinated. A measure to avoid the unlucky thirteen?

On silver necklaces they strung The flowering stars, on crowns they hung The dragon-fire, in twisted wire They meshed the light of moon and sun

The Silmarils?

As they sang the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and a jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves. Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.

The dwarven song is explicitly magical.

they were all looking at him with eyes shining in the dark. "We like the dark," said all the dwarves.

Dwarves have reflective eyes, perhaps night vision.

"Where are you going?" said Thorin, in a tone that seemed to show that he guessed both halves of the hobbit's mind.

Given his smoke ring games with Gandalf, Thorin definitely has magic about him. I'm sure Bilbo is easy to read, but it's also possible that this is better than a guess.

"may the hair on his toes never fall out!"

Is that a genuine hobbitish blessing, or is Thorin guessing? He could be assuming an analogy with dwarvish beards. Bilbo doesn't comment on it.

"If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. You may (possibly) all live to thank me yet." "That would be no good," said the wizard, "not without a mighty Warrior, even a Hero. I tried to find one; but warriors are busy fighting one another in distant lands, and in this neighborhood heroes are scarce, or simply not to be found." "That is why I settled on burglary--especially when I remembered the existence of a Side-door."

Gandalf clearly appreciates the importance of Roles. I suspect this passage had a great influence on Terry Pratchett.

"From what it says on the map I should guess there is a closed door which has been made to look exactly like the side of the Mountain. That is the usual dwarves' method-- I think that is right, isn't it?"

Gandalf sounds like he's unsure... but he's been around enough that I'm surprised by that. I think that, actually, he may be explicitly giving Thorin the opportunity to confirm him so as not to be speaking over a very important dwarf about a matter of dwarvish culture.
