That’s right, it looks like I’m holding poop. But this is an excellent fire starter made by nature. These special fungi are called King Alfred’s Cakes and legend has it that in the 9th Century when the king was hiding from the Vikings, a peasant woman gave him shelter. The only proviso was he had to look after her cakes that were cooking while she went out. He thought that stuff was servant-biz obvs and promptly forgot the cakes which burnt to a cinder. To hide his embarrassment he then discarded all of the cakes throughout the forest. This fungi has special properties that mean once dry they can ignite very quickly and maintain an ember for days. This apparently allowed our ancestors to keep them lit while travelling between camps and made lighting fires much easier. I’m going to give it a go and see whether they maintain their embers in our log burner overnight. . . . #kingalfred #kingalfredscakes #fungifriday #fungifacts #bushcraft #bushcraftuk #campfirestories #daldiniaconcentrica #vikings #firestarter #outdoortype #camping #mushroomhunting #foraginguk (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKoK8fkhD51/?igshid=rja8od3pf2z4
