I know I’m a bit late, but I wanted to say HAPPY PRIDE!
The deathcare profession is becoming a lot more diverse as more and more young people come into it, and it’a great to see. I personally work with several fellow lgbtqia+ people at my funeral home and it’s such a nice feeling of solidarity in an industry that is historically white, male and cisgendered.
Along with the progress though, I also think it’s very important to talk about what everyone can do to help protect themselves and their identities when their time comes.
I think of a case years back of a trans woman whose hair was cut and who was put in a suit by her family’s request for her visitation, because she’d passed away in an accident, and her parents were her next of kin, they completely disregarded and disrespected her identity after she died.
If you are a queer person, especially someone who identifies with a different gender than you were assigned at birth, and don’t feel comfortable with the idea of your family being in charge of your end of life care or funeral arrangements, there are a couple of things you can do:
-Fill out an Advance Directive. This is sometimes called a Durable Power of Attorney or a Living Will. This dictates that, should you be incapable of making your own medical decisions due to coma, illness, injury, etc, the person you ASSIGN is in charge of those decisions.
-Sign a Designee form. This is crucial if you want to designate a specific person to make decisions about your body disposition and funeral care. POWER OF ATTORNEY ENDS AT DEATH. Your power of attorney will NOT be able to make post-death decisions on your behalf. You need a Designee form for that!
Both of these forms can assign any willing person that you chose to be in charge of these decisions. This person does not have to be related to you, they could be a friend, roommate, non-married partner, metamore, in-law, whoever you feel the most comfortable with, and who is willing to sign the form.
You are NEVER too young to have these forms. If you are a young person, re-visit them every couple years and make sure the other person on them is still willing to be your POA/Designee. You can re-do these forms as many times as you need. In most states they should also be FREE and require only a notary public and witnesses!
Forms should be available on your state’s .gov websites!
I wish all of you a peaceful and happy pride season, and as always,
Memento Mori

Ok I could be completely wrong and seeing patterns that aren’t there (it wouldn’t be the first time) but I think Ed Sheeran and Sabrina Carpenter might come out tomorrow. I think they’re the next dominoes to cascade or FALL after Shawn Mendes. Let me explain
Tumblr media
The 10th and 11th 🎃 messages -> Oct (10) and Nov (11) -> “the turn of the decade beFALLs the facade” -> “it was the end of a decade (the end of Oct or 10th month) but the start of an age” -> Change -> revolution/The Hunger Games ⚡️🏹😈🎯🔥 -> HALLOWEEN COSTUMES in the 11th 🎃 message -> Ed's gay little monkey meme costume and Elton John esque pfp (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) and Sabrina's Tinkerbell costume 🧚 (Tinkerbell connects to the Peter Pan metaphor, growing up = coming out of the closet 🚪) (Sabrina is the one on the rollercoaster 🎢) -> Enchanted Forest and fairy wings 🧚 in 10th 🎃 message (OUT Of The Woods, “screaming color 🌈,” “somber woodland fairies”) -> “I hope your Halloween is enchanted” in 14th 🎃 message -> passing the torch/relay race/Paris Olympics/Nothing New, “she’ll know the way and then she’ll say she got the map from me” // “my bare hands paved their paths,” (x) -> Death with Dignity in Gracie’s playlists // Die With A Smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars // funerals 🖤 // my tears ricochet eras tour performance and visuals // Billie’s Hit Me Hard and Soft album cover which is her free falling out of a closet door and drowning in the deep end (the deep end in Gracie’s Risk and Under/Over, Lizzy’s Pushing It Down and Praying, “softer, harder, in between”, Gregory’s Mistakes, Guilty as Sin?, “you’ve made your bed now lie in it”) -> Castles Crumbling (PLURAL bc multiple artists’ castles are crumbling in this mass coming out, there’s an intentional ‘s typo which connects it to the “i’s” in the 14th 🎃 message and to all the other intentional glitches/errors) -> Lizzy’s All Falls Down -> Jump Then Fall -> Birds of a Feather/The Albatross -> 2nd 🎃 message -> Gregory’s The Fall and Before the Sun (55 mile signs and Gaga’s Smile being changed to sMILE on Spotify) (x) -> All Too Well (Sad Girl Autumn Version) bc autumn is FALL 🍂🍁 -> “autumn leaves FALLING DOWN like PIECES INTO PLACE” 🧩 -> “and all the pieces fall right into place” -> “and just like clockwork the dominoes cascaded in a line” -> Gracie’s Cool, “I'm actin' bored, it's my right, after all the love that you bombed” -> “tick tick tick of love bombs” -> tick tick tick BOOM 🧨🌋🕰️ (TNT, the reticent volcano) -> going back to the Halloween costumes, Taylor was dressed as a squirrel and there was Project Acorn bc the mass coming out movement (The Story of Us/The Manuscript/the film) is “nuts” lol (x) -> Ed Sheeran’s insta having an acorn and 🍂 for his Autumn Variations album -> Run ft Ed Sheeran (the relay race metaphor) -> Red being a FALL 🍂🍁 album

I think this all ties into the election too hence all the red, white, and blue and 4th of July easter eggs lately 🇺🇸 (Gregory’s Before the Sun mentions the 4th of July). And I think that’s why Karlie (Miss Americana, KARma) wore the Kill Bill costume 👀 -> Better Than Revenge Spotify canvas and TSMWEL eras tour visuals -> shattering glass ceilings -> “The Mountain: ‘You can say I like girls or boys; So call it what you want, call it what you want’” in the anon message -> Coldplay’s iAAM (i Am A Mountain): “I got this feeling that the ceiling is for bursting through…I got this feeling I can summon up lightning…Everyone taking aim, Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain” -> “Dear reader when you aim at the devil make sure you don’t miss” ⚡️🏹😈🎯🔥 -> The Archer/Katniss

I kinda want to start planning my funeral not because I think I'm going to die or want to die but because I don't want a god damn church service. The thought of a Christian funeral, which is undoubtedly what would be planned for me by my family, is nauseating. I know I won't be there to be mad about it but fuck! If someone shares the gospel at my funeral I'm gonna resurrect so I can punch them in the face.

Why didn’t HW have a horse drawn carriage at his funeral procession?
Although most Presidential funerals look very similar and follow many of the same traditions established over the past 150+ years, each President tailors their individual service in their own way with personal touches. When they begin planning for their funeral (a process which begins soon after they become President and is frequently updated throughout the rest of their lives) It's almost as if there is a menu of ceremonies that they can pick and choose from as they update their funeral plans over the years, and there are often small differences in each funeral to honor certain aspects of a Presidents life. For example, as part of the music played during his procession and services, Gerald Ford requested that the fight song of his beloved alma mater, the University of Michigan, be performed. And when Ford's casket was brought into the U.S. Capitol to lie in state, instead of going directly to the Rotunda, it made brief, symbolic stops near the chamber of the House of Representatives (to honor his nearly quarter-century of service as a member of the House), as well as near the Senate chamber (to honor his brief service as president of the Senate -- one of his Constitutional duties when he was Vice President).
Even though their respective state funerals featured much of the pomp and ceremony of other Presidential funerals, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford both chose to use the Presidential hearse for the full funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol instead of having their caskets placed on the horse-drawn caisson. In Bush's case, he made the choice because he felt the horse-drawn caisson was too slow -- which is kind of funny considering he was dead and probably didn't have any other plans. Ford used a motorcade during his funeral procession so that his casket could pass by several places that played a part in his long life and career. His motorcade passed through Alexandria, Virginia where Ford and his family lived when he first became President -- while the White House was in transition following Richard Nixon's sudden resignation, President Ford actually commuted to work at the White House every day from his family's modest suburban home. Ford's hearse also made at stop at the National World War II Memorial to honor his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

I thought embalming was standard practice for burials, but it turns out that even in the US, where embalming is unusually common, only about 50% of corpses are embalmed. It's primarily to preserve corpses that won't have their viewing for a while, or who need to be transported, or who died violently and need to be "patched up". There's no benefit to embalming for the burial or community health benefits during decomposition underground, natural burials are fine.
Anyways, seeing as Jason Todd's funeral only had four people at it, I'm positive there wasn't a viewing and he wouldn't have been embalmed. Which is probably good. idk if you can come back to life if all your blood is formaldehyde

I have a headcanon where people conjure flowers at funerals but what are other ways people imagine magic could change funeral customs? especially considering a society with two recent wars...
