Southeast Calgary Schools: Mahogany
The early education a child receives lays the foundation for a child’s future, and while much of this learning happens in a classroom or at home, all of a child’s experiences help create this foundation. One of the many benefits of living in a master-planned community like Mahogany is the ability to walk or ride a bike to and from school. With the arrival of two new schools in Mahogany, your children will be able to enjoy that simple pleasure, developing a sense of independence and learning all about their community’s network of pathways and parks.
Currently, there is one newly finished school in Mahogany, Divine Mercy Elementary, on Mahogany Boulevard. However, the Alberta government green-lit a new Calgary public school Mahogany Elementary School. Mahogany Elementary will serve K-4 primary students beginning in fall 2022.
Divine Mercy Elementary School
The newest additions to the Calgary Catholic School Division, Divine Mercy Elementary school opened in 2018 and accommodates up to 750 students from kindergarten to Grade 6. There are currently 640 students enrolled for the 2019-2020 school year. At Divine Mercy Elementary, the school day begins at 8:20 am and ends at 2:50 in the afternoon, students who arrive after 8:20 must go through the front doors to get a late pass.
Divine Mercy Elementary offers a well-rounded, faith-based education. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, the school also offers students a variety of supplementary courses included in the career and technology foundations (CTF) options. CTF options are open to all students in grade 5 and 6 students.
The CTF program allows students to explore their interests and passions and provides students with the opportunity to build their understanding of the world around them as they identify and apply career and life skills. CTF options available at Divine Mercy Elementary include animation, coding, crochet, cooking, fit 4 life and the maker olympics, which allows students to design, experiment and invent. At the same time, they explore the world of science and engineering.
Along with career and technology options, all Calgary Catholic School Division schools have support within the regular classroom through the diverse learning support program. Each school has a diverse learning teacher (DLT) who coordinates a wide range of support to assist in programming for students with diverse learning needs. Assistance may include assessment, learning support plan development, individual or small group instruction, assistive technology, coordinating special education placement and/or accessing health-related services, including speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, in-home and mental health support. If a student is transferring from another school, the diverse learning teacher also works with teachers from other schools to support successful transition planning.
The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment. Kindergarten registration is ongoing throughout the school year, and the child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration. The Alberta Government has made changes regarding kindergarten entry age for the 2020-2021 school year. Children must turn five years on or before Dec 31, 2020. The amendments to the School Act are in effect for all Alberta school boards as of September 2020. For the 2019-2020 school year, the registration dates for kindergarten remain the same; a child must turn five on or before March 1, 2020.  See some great Mahogany Homes for Sale.
For working parents, the school also offers a before and after school childcare service for Divine Mercy Families.
