“I read that beauty has historically demanded replication. We make more of anything we find aesthetically pleasing, whether it’s a vase, a painting, a chalice, a poem. We reproduce it in order to keep it, extend it through space and time. To gaze at what pleases—a fresco, a peach-red mountain range, a boy, the mole on his jaw—is, in itself, replication—the image prolonged in the eye, making more of it, making it last. Staring into the mirror, I replicate myself into a future where I might not exist.”

June 19 The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
The artworks on display at MOMAK's 2nd Collection Gallery were my favourite out of all the galleries I visited in Kyoto. I was particularly fond of a set of three silkscreen prints by Tadanori Yokoo. The prints, titled Torture, depict a woman suspended by rope in 6 different states. The use of fluorescent orange in each of the prints made them stand out from the surrounding works.
I have never seen sculptures quite like the pieces in Alexia Petsinis' 1983 Collection 'Tea and Coffee Piazza'. The experimental sci-fi nature of the works feel like they could only exist in cartoons. I spent a considerable amount of time admiring each piece as they brought me so much joy.
Fukuda Heihachiro's works on paper scrolls were another highlight of MOMAK. The presentation of the works was so unique and inspiring. I particularly enjoyed 'Eggplants' and 'Bamboo'. The fan/rainbow like shape that the paper has been cut out in and stuck onto the scroll was unlike anything I have seen.
