i returned to Tokyo in mid-March, about a year after my last visit. while last year's trip was entirely a solo photography outing, this time around i had company with me with our primary goal being to shop 'til we dropped. having been a visitor to Japan every year (save for the three years of hiatus during the pandemic), i figured that it was about time i relaxed a little on the photography. yet, i somehow found myself lugging my DSLR and Lomo'Instant Wide with me after last year's bold proclamation of only focusing on one camera during my travels. granted, it was kind of what i did with the L'IW to some fairly mixed results.
for the most part, i've realised how cumbersome the L'IW camera was to bring around - it's boxy shape and lack of straps lends no comfort when going about with it. switching between the L'IW and DSLR meant that i needed to put the L'IW away in order to shoot with the DSLR. in the end, i decided to completely focus on shooting with the L'IW - making this trip the first where i've shot less than 100 photos on my DSLR! furthermore, this trip being one that primarily involved family and a whole lot of shopping meant that the opportunities to shoot mostly went out the window.
however, despite all my gripes, i ended up exposing a significant amount of instant film during our eight day stay in Tokyo. a stop at Yodobashi Camera to pick up a 5-pack and a couple more at Don Quixote, and i found myself bringing home a stack of 70 exposed Instax Wides. i'd say that my experience shooting with the L'IW pretty much resembles that of my initial run with it back in 2017 - whereby overthinking tends to lead to over/underexposed shots. several other quirks have also made their presence known - the most nerve-wracking of the lot being that the exposed photos could potentially end up not ejecting properly after a shot. fortunately that only happened to two frames out of the 70 i've shot, but the cost to risk ratio (plus the botched shots from incorrect exposures, poor framing) is already too much for yours truly to endure. furthermore, the L'IW exhibited an odd sort of light leak in the form of a "light ring" which i initially thought was due to lens flaring. however, shooting in a dark subway also proved to cause this light leak to occur, thus, i surmised that it was yet another one of Lomography's poor QC which they love to market as "one of the charming quirks of their cameras".
while the L'IW was undeniably not the most pleasant of Lomography cameras i've shot with, i'd be lying if i said that the photos didn't turn out okay. some that did turn out okay captures the magic of analog film and "spontaneity" of the Lomography ethos so profoundly, that i wondered if any other camera could've produced these results. in addition, the novelty of shooting with instant film during my travels was something i'd never knew that i wanted to explore, so that kind of checks off an entry in a list i never knew i had to begin with. i guess it's still film after all, except i get instant gratification (or disappointment in some cases). nevertheless, one could say that i'm pretty much done with the L'IW for the foreseeable future - and after that long 7 year hiatus, i'll be seeing it again in another 7 years time. provided that it hasn't completely disintegrated by then.

I recently bought a Fujifilm Instax Mini 12, because I wanted to try instant photography and this was the most affordable option for me.
I like that this type of photography pushes me to be mindful. The pictures don't always turn out well and I am often a bit nervous when pressing the shutter and waiting for the photograph to appear. However, the satisfaction that I feel when I see that I've taken a good picture is greater than the one that I experience when shooting with my digital camera. It makes me really excited for film photography - I hope to delve into it in the future and I also hope to buy myself a Polaroid someday.
