Discover Excellence: Top 10 Schools in Fremont Unified School District
Fremont Unified School District: Early Development and Formation
Fremont Unified School District (F.U.S.D.) in California is famous for its main priorities, which include academic success, student and staff diversity, and available educational programs.
F.U.S.D. experiences high enrollment and caters to the education needs of a diverse population. Schools, from elementary to middle to high school, play a different but essential role in providing education within F.U.S.D.
Fremont, situated on the East Bay in Northern California, started establishing its schools and colleges in the late 1800s as the population increased.
The schooling organization forced the creation of several small school districts, which eventually merged to form what is today's Fremont Unified School District.
Consolidation and Growth
The district's present shape developed partially in the mid-20th century through consolidation.
Smaller districts such as Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and others consolidated into F.U.S.D.'s formation to improve the districts' administrative efficiencies, increase access to valuable teaching tools, and equalize educational opportunities for a rapidly expanding student population.
Educational Milestones
Over many years, F.U.S.D. has recorded various achievements in its education agenda, focusing on excellence, effective teaching methods, and stakeholders' engagement. This district has often changed its curriculum to ensure students and their future needs, produce job-ready personnel, and excel in education.
Community and Diversity
Fremont is no exception when it comes to its diverse population; indeed, F.U.S.D. is rich in the diversity of its students and study offerings.
Culturally, there is a spirit of diversity, and the district supports diversity and should regard multiculturalism as a strength element to help students of different cultures.
Mission San Jose High School
What was formerly an elementary school became a high school in the Mission San Jose region, which remains one of F.U.S.D.'s premier schools. Generally, M.S.J.H.S. has challenging academic programs; it provides many Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses that will enable students to prepare for college life.
It is solid in Science, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics, better known as S.T.E.M., with well-performing Robotics and Academic Decathlon teams.

That is why Washington High School has a welcoming attitude to learning and vibrant student leadership, which played a significant role in its high rating among the F.U.S.D. schools.
Kennedy High School
Kennedy High School's academic success is one of the critical features necessary for choosing an educational establishment. The school offers concentrative courses in medical and growing engineering fields in the Kennedy district.
Kennedy High influences its learners to be innovative, competent community leaders through participative leadership and service learning.
Robertson High School
Robertson High School is known for providing flexible education methods, including alternative education programs and customized learning solutions. The school caters to a diverse student body so that students can set their timetables.

Many prestigious features have been found about Mission Valley Elementary School, such as the emphasis on academic rigidity, professional approach to education, and child care.
The Mission Valley neighborhood school is evaluated and features provisions for early literacy, S.T.E.M., and C.C.A.S. It also focuses on parents' involvement and cooperation with the school through participation in learning activities affecting Mission Valley Elementary students.
Gomes Elementary School
Still, Gomes Elementary School is one of the most successful schools, focusing on the student's achievements and the usage of modern approaches to teaching.
Located in the Warm Springs district, it enrolls students in a program of studies that stresses academic learning and incorporates enriched music, technology, and Physical education. Gomes Elementary values diversity and culture by educating everyone fortunate enough to be part of the society.

While the Bay Area may seem to many like a wide mix of transplants from other places, one actually doesn’t have to look all that closely to find small-town vibes and long-time native families in our local suburbs. The city of Sunnyvale has been home to the Kaprelian and Henell families dating back to the 1950s. Brad Kaprelian and Lindi Henell began dating in the late 1970s, both of whom went to Fremont High School. Read complete news at svvoice.com.

very in my feelings about the tropicana and vegas in general right now
#sometimes it feels like if we do ever manage to make it back to the valley nothing will be the same#the trop has been imploded#which means the flamingo is the last bastion of old-school midcentury vegas#(at least on the strip. fremont street still has some old holdouts and there are still individual ancient casinos around but still.)#i know nothing survives in vegas forever but like. we lived there only ten years ago and so much has changed#i still can't believe fontainebleau actually fucking opened! like WHAT???#that place had been under construction years before we moved there. during our entire time there. and for years after coming back to mn#ik most of the strip as i knew it still exists but losing three awesome midcentury Rat Pack-y casinos in fifteen years makes me so sad#(actually more like seven MCM casinos in the last seventeen years bc several others got imploded right before our arrival)#i love mcm architecture and that era of vegas so so so much and i hate seeing it torn down#i teared up when i was on the bus to work one morning and we went by the sahara as the sign was midair being taken down by a crane#that building had been so beautiful inside (minus the nascar bits ofc) and i had to see it get demolished.#sometimes progress doesn't feel like progress. sometimes it just feels like destruction.#las vegas#i just want to go home

Wow.
I can't leave to enjoy a few days vacation without the world falling apart?
Hybe vs. Min HeeJin. Not on anyone's bingo card this year. I have not caught up on everything but who tipped off Hybe about her dastardly plans? The timing of it all... and her little extemporaneous skit she did for a press conference was perhaps part of her plan to turn public opinion in her favor? She claims to have invented kpop or at least made it what it is today but out the other side of her mouth says she hates idol culture?
Hybe's not here to play, they will not be nice. I see no benefit to her for showing us the not so pretty side of the idol industry. Maybe that's her problem, she can't see what she's doing because she's too far into it. Thirty years in the business will make you lose your objectivity. She has no idea she is coming across as a greedy, spoiled, entitled, manipulative, narcissistic, emotional female in a male dominated industry. Basically a nut case.
The lady had a tremendous opportunity to perhaps take ownership of her company in due time, become a great example for female leadership in a country where corporate culture is steeped in chaebolism. Instead she squandered that and thinks she will come out on top. Did she miss the Hybe vs. SM Entertainment episode from last year?
Anyway.
RM's new album! RPWP!
The Monochrome pop up store is doing well!
Jin will be back after 6 Fridays!
In other news. I went to Las Vegas. This is what I saw:
The Bellagio Fountains. They're huge. The Bellagio is SWANK. I looked for Jimin in Dior and Tiffany, Hobi in the Louis Vuitton store, Namjoon in the Bottega Veneta store, but none of them were in there. There was no Calvin Klein store.
When Hobi, JK and Tae were there watching the fountains dance to Dynamite, they were standing here:
Passed by Allegiant Stadium a few times. It's huge.
Drove out to Seven Magic Mountains. I am happy to report the lowest boulders had no writing or graffiti. They were amazingly huge as you can see.
Joon's pic of the above rocks:
Went to AREA 15 and it was HUGE and amazing! It's impossible to show everything that its about, there are multiple buildings and installations and activities, gift shops, bars, etc. We went into the Omega Mart (mega art) experience which led to a maze of fantastically created chambers, each different from the last one, all pulsing with animated lights, texture walls, ceilings and floors.
And ate at Hobak Korean BBQ. We couldn't find out which tables the members of BTS sat at but I got a pic of the Butter album they all signed. There were other autographs from other famous Korean celebs but the BTS signatures were displayed in a more prominent place on the wall.
We also scoped out The Sphere. Also HUGE. The concert space is arena sized. I don't know who was playing there that night but the parking lot was filling up.
We also walked the Strip.
The Fremont Street Experience. That's an animated video screen overhead with ziplines running through the length of it. It's two blocks of casinos, restaurants and gift shops. People are also doing busking and shows at street level.
Hoover Dam, view of the dam from the highway bridge and view of the highway bridge from the dam. Spent a few minutes on the Arizona side.
Hiked in the desert. Saw cactus and wildlife. Drank a lot of water.
Drove to the Mojave Desert Preserve in California just to say we did.
We hated leaving. It was a fun trip. But damn, I have so much stuff to catch up on now. Hiatus my ass.
If Vegas is on the BTS comeback tour I promise I will be there this time.
We gambled at the airport on our way out. The slot machines were next to our gate. And in the baggage claim area. But as you can see, its not just about gambling there.
In case you didn't get it, everything in Vegas is HUUUGGE and FARRRR. Walk a lot, spend a lot of money.
Overall, Las Vegas was clean, the people were extremely friendly and welcoming of course, they might be teaching hospitality as a school subject there, I don't know.
#what happens in vegas stays in vegas#until i post all my pics here#so regretful that i didnt go to ptd in vegas#we also unknowingly drove past the millenium dance center#where bts rehearsed while in las vegas

I have seen you post about it forever and yet I still haven’t been able to parse what it is or what it’s about. What’s Fremont County?
HAHAHAHA i was wondering how long it would take for someone to ask this!!
fremont county monster hunters is a monster of the week rpg campaign i've been playing sporadically for the past 2.5 years. (and when i say sporadically i mean we've played 4 arcs in about 6 or 7 ~6 hour sessions over the past two and a half years). and because of how long we go without playing (and because we are moderately obsessive people), we get reeealll hiatus-brained in the interim. i am irrevocably obsessed with it.
the premise is that the party is a group of people who can see through the Glare (like the Mist from pjo), who all attend fremont county community college in *mumble mumble* pacific northwest america. i always imagine it as northern california but i honestly don't know if there's a more specific location?
there's a prophecy involving the world ending in fire, and the five people who are there for it. (presumably to stop it, but the prophecy is pretty vague and the only person who has access to it recently lost their clairvoyance) but before that happens, we fight vampires and stuff
that's the short version. i'm gonna talk more about it though bc i can talk about this campaign forever
i play shay song, photo/journalism major first, reluctant Chosen One second. he found a meteorite sword in the woods a few weeks after his dad died under mysterious circumstances, and he's been fighting monsters ever since! he's down to earth and moderately neurotic, and desperately wants to just be normal. (sucks for him though, because that is straight up not going to happen)
also in the party are:
shamsiel, the divine. she's a cherubim sent by The Bureaucracy, a consortium of angels that's essentially a corporate office. she's been tasked with protecting shay and ensuring the prophecy comes to pass. she's a fish out of water who doesn't exactly know how to interact with people, and she's devoted to her cause above all else. i talk about her and shay most on here bc her player is also on tumblr (hiiiii sofie)
levi, the monstrous. a obnoxious rich boy and literal demon. he's sent by his demonic father to do ?????? carry out his demonic bidding? it's unclear. he likes to hang around the party and make passive-aggressive comments and be helpful when it's convenient for him. he's also shay's roommate! they had a homoerotic streak going that was probably a thinly veiled excuse for my partner an i to flirt with each other in the most roundabout way possible before we started dating. he also kidnapped a beloved npc in the most recent session! we're gonna beat him up
anna baker, the spellslinger. absolute sweetheart and heart of the party. she started learning magic and took on a superhero moniker to fight monsters and crime! (<- this doesn't come up nearly as much as it should, btw. i want a tales of ba sing se episode about cold turkey asap) oh yeah, that moniker was "cold turkey". her catchphrase is "you're about to quit crime... Cold Turkey." she's the best.
claire fitz, the mundane. currently in the "denial" stage of realizing she's a lesbian. she's a culinary arts major who carries around a fireaxe. she's kind of weirded out that she's part of this prophecy, but she's very capable and helps about as best she can. she's also lying to all her high school friends! they all think she's going to yale right now! what's that about???
and mila, the seeker! former cheerleader, constant conspiracy theory enthusiast. she's 100% convinced that aliens are real and will do her best to make sure you believe too. psyched beyond belief that she was right and monsters are real. will hold your hands and say "i don't need you to believe. i just need you to trust me and open your mind to the possibilities." kind of miffed that she isn't part of the apocalyptic prophecy, but it's fine.
also, notable npcs!
don powers, shay's former soccer nemesis. business major. kind of a dick, but we're trying to reform him. buried the hatchet with shay recently due to, uh, a common enemy forming. canonically in love with alder as of arc 4.
alder caine, don's roommate. my favorite. got into some shady deals with demons, and now they're hunting her down! levi kidnapped her in the most recent session!
nin, former clairvoyant. elected to give up their powers recently, with aid from the bureaucracy. it was sus as fuck! also dating anna. they're cute
there have been four arcs so far
from rush till prom, the vampire frat arc
the vengeful spirit stick, the cheerleader ghost arc
the switching hour, the doppelganger bottle episode
the deck of many flings, the tarot/love spell episode
ok that's the broad overview. i could talk about this for hours but i will leave it at that :) there's an in-character twitter feed i made though

Who are Kip's coworkers at Smiling Friends?
Thank you so much for asking! I’ve been wanting to delve into the next generation of Smiling Friends! You know about Kip Pimling and Boss Pim, the whimsical and optimistic father-daughter duo of the company, but here are the others:
Gwendolyn Schmendolyn (née Pik) is the only other field worker of the company aside from Kip. As the two who interact with clients the most, these ladies conduct all of their missions together much like Charlie and Pim famously did decades ago. Gwen is not so cynical but pragmatic in her outlook; she knows there’s a time and place to be playful, but something about her strict personality is really funny to the youngest clients and never fails to make them smile. She treats kids like adults in a good way, and Kip is strongest when she’s helping to heal the inner child in adult clients who need a little whimsy. They both have very different skillsets that are both essential to the job, allowing them to work with clients of a wide range of ages and maturity levels. They should be the perfect team.
If they weren’t each other’s sworn enemies.
Gwen is a firm believer in workplace fairness and believes Kip is breaching it by working under her father. She’ll accuse Kip of being a nepo baby for receiving a kiss on the head from Boss Pim, even though he does that to all his employees. Even when Pim gives Gwen certain opportunities over Kip, even though he treats the ladies equally, Gwen still has some snarky comment ready for Kip about her daddy’s girl privilege. Kip absolutely hates this. Not only that, but she’s jealous that Gwen is so good with kids. Kip loves kids! And would love to make them smile! But no, they all want Gwen. She has no idea why they want that stony husk of a woman. If she bothered to ask Gwen anything about her life, she’d learn that she has her own little ones at home and plans to have more.
Kip may also be a tiny bit jealous of Mr. Schmendolyn but let’s not unpack that
The bottom line is that Gwen and Kip make their clients smile at the cost of constantly making each other frown. Kip likes to think of herself as tolerant and forgiving but she’s clearly not around Gwen, instead regressing back to the more aggressive and petty tendencies she hates so much about herself. And Gwen, as much as she seems to be like this all the time, has a softer side that Kip doesn’t get to see outside of professional matters. They bring out the worst in each other as much as a part of them wishes the opposite.
Jerard “Jerry” Fremont helps make clients smile too, but not in the usual way. To keep up with the times, Smiling Friends has started offering virtual services, which is Jerry’s area of expertise. Despite his older age he is very technologically adept, having grown up during the earliest days of the internet and maintained a steady online presence through his whole life. From MySpace to the new MySmile chat rooms, Jerry has seen it all. Because of his computer skills, he’s also put in charge of most of the spreadsheets and other online paperwork. He’s also a go-to for a lot of IT problems, alongside his much younger coworker Bit who is also very tech savvy. Jerry is also incredibly kind, always making an effort to personally connect with colleagues and clients alike. During his lunch breaks you’ll often find him reminiscing on the good old days with Boss Pim or catching up on life with one of his coworkers. Both Kip and Gwen adore Jerry and really wish they could go on missions with him instead of each other, but the other thing about him is that he’s extremely, painfully shy. He’s tried going out on field missions, truly, but his anxiety was so debilitating that he couldn’t do his job at all. So, he stays in the office, leaving Kip and Gwen stuck with each other.
Bit Bidi is the social media manager and marketer of Smiling Friends, a full-time job in this extremely tech-driven world. Fresh out of school, Bit knows all the young people’s slang and keeps up with all the latest trends down to the very minute they come out, which makes him great at knowing what will sell. He’s constantly on the run working on everything from billboards to social media deals, usually all at the same time. His attention span is literally nonexistent but it works for the nature of his job. The brainrot is terminal and he speaks exclusively in meme references that make his coworkers go, “Bit what the fuck are you talking about.” However, he seems to really get what the people want, as just one seemingly utter nonsense meme posted by him on the Smiling Friends account brings in millions of dollars and lots of new client calls within seconds. Nobody knows how Bit does it, but his genius is unmatched in that way.

title: a heap of broken images (2/3)
pairing: kim wexler x lalo salamanca
rating: M
summary:
“The last time Kim threw up was on the way from Red Cloud to Lincoln, at age sixteen."
"And I will show you something different from either Your shadow at morning striding behind you Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you." t.s.eliot - the waste land
.
The last time Kim threw up was on the way from Red Cloud to Lincoln, at age sixteen. Her mum blamed it on her reading a book while on a bumpy road, but it turned out she had gotten the scarlet fever, immediately missing the first two weeks in her new high-school. Not that it mattered much: they moved to Fremont two months later, the book she had read on the road (Crime and Punishment) - along with most of her clothes - abandoned at that shabby Lincoln apartment.
As she washes her face in the sink of the nearest bathroom, she doesn't remember whether she had even, had ever, finished that book. She remembers the heat in her cheeks and the sudden fever rash, spots all along her lanky body, the telltale sign of the illness, red like berries, red like blood.
Yes, Lalo Salamanca has those telltale sign of illness as well, red exclamation marks around him. He needn't even open his mouth, no, because he might be an illness himself, hollow and horrible - all hunger. He could see it in his grin, the delight when she noticed the blood stains on him. And even if her brain knows that secondary sources are to be taken with a pinch of salt, she still can easily imagine now what Pete said: Jorge De Guzmán sitting in the blood, with the calmest of faces, with the surest of hands. Those two, the ones who tried to kill him, never stood a chance.
There is still bile in her throat as she stands before the mirror to smooth the folds on her skirt, her shirt, her face. No matter. She has to go back, has to see this through, because she cannot bear to think of the future yet, the one which seems to turn muddier by the seconds.
Let's try to plan this by hour then, says her practical self. First MDC officials, then the persecution, if needed. And when Jimmy comes home, we will plan the rest together. Tackle each problem one by one.
Except.
When is Jimmy coming home, huh? says her other voice. Is he coming home around the time your father will? Haven't you learnt anything?
But for Kim, this hypothetical loss is so unbearable that she shooes it right away.
Okay then. Let's be practical, not ethical. How about giving Salamanca up? If you do it now, right today, he will rot in prison for the rest of his life and you and Jimmy can start anew.
Except they can't.
Because Jimmy has already agreed to help, has already helped: first Varga, then another man in the cartel, and finally Salamanca himself. Criminal activity, in the starkest sense. And you don't get witness protection if you help criminals. You get prison, or something that makes you feel like you're in one.
Under the current circumstances, giving up Lalo means giving up Jimmy. Jimmy and what comes with him. A life of -
Let's look at it from a different angle then, the voice continues, what if there are no bigger fish to fry than this Salamanca? Who knows how important he is? After all, they did try to murder him this morning.
But, she counter-argues. That's probably quite normal in the drug-business. If not a shiv, then poison or a bullet in the back.
Wondering would have to wait though. If her client lets anything slip in the future, she will be first to take a mental note of it and use it later, but right now, she has more pressing issues. No point in chasing alternatives while reality awaits. And ultimately she shouldn't get her hopes up, really: Salamanca doesn't look like a guy who lets anything "slip" either by fate or circumstance, unless he deliberately wanted someone to bite.
And just for the record, she tries to remind herself while shooting one last look at her reflection in the mirror, the actual ethical choice would really be giving Salamanca up.
.
"Miss Wexler" stutters Pete as he spots her in the shabby corridor, aiming for the door again. "I thought you have gone home."It's true that Kim left the room in such a hurry that the words she threw at Pete in passing couldn't have made too much sense.
"Just got some water" Kim answers levelly and catches the guilty look on the guard's face. "What?"
The strained voices from the end of the corridor answer her question.
The end of the corridor - where the chipped door stands, slightly ajar.
"So sor..." starts Pete, but Kim is already rushing past him, past the flyers, past the weathered door, her reluctance to return forgotten.
Inside, there is a scene.
Besides her client, there are three of them. And Kim heart sinks. Because in the bright-light of this cubicle room, she recognizes Gina Khalil, the assistant district attorney, almost instantly. She is the only one Kim knows, but doesn't bring any relief: the man he is talking to - a young man with glasses and a pasty complexion - seems like a lawyer. He must be the Center's representative. And worse still, just behind the accused there is another man, in a wrinkly suit, with graying hair. Most likely a cop. Ninety-eight percent.
Just between the trio sits Salamanca, still handcuffed, the very image of curiosity and calm. He is very still.
Everything is working against Jimmy and her, but just a second after entering the room, Kim sees immediately she has one great advantage against these three. Each of them want something different.
And they seemed to have just arrived at an impasse.
"...clear that we need to write him up, then move him to PC before we face another scandal like this" says the spectacled man with the pasty smile. "It's clear that he is in danger here. God, if this gets out, we're in it. Remember that Florentine fella, Tim? The amount of asses we had to kiss after that..."
"Do you hear yourself, Simon?" cuts in Khalil, before Tim, the detective could answer. "He clearly needs to be moved to Los Lunas, as soon as, not protective custody."
"Excuse me" says Kim, one leg in the room, the other still outside. Hardly any air left between the five of them.
Heads turn.
"Who are you?" asks Simon, the ninety-eight percent lawyer.
"Kim!" exclaims Khalil. "We didn't expect you."
"Well, maybe you should have" Kim says - meets Khalil's eyes with a dare. "Since I'm representing Mr. de Guzmán in Saul Goodman's absence."
Khalil's jaw drops. So does Simon's.
Behind them, the detective looks weary. Like he doesn't want to be here.
And Kim, who is otherwise very wise in reading people's expressions, cannot pinpoint what Lalo Salamanca is thinking at the moment. He has a careful kind of mask on, almost humble. Emphasis on almost.
She looks back to the corridor, where another guard steps near Pete, and starts to talk to him in a low voice.
Just perfect.
"Well" says Kim, and decides to step in for good, close the door. All in, all rise, or something akin to it. "If we are going to discuss this case out in the open, without any previous, written arrangements, we might as well sit."
She cuts her way to the table, sits next to her client who still smells metallic, who now casts his eyes downward, the very image of civility. He has long, dark lashes: they cast zig-zag shadows under his eyes.
It's a strange detail to notice here, in this moment.
"We are simply talking possibilities, Miss Wexler." Simon points out. "Important distinction."
"No, Simon" argues Khalil. "We are talking about possible new evidence, under our very eyes."
While Simon starts a mundane monologue about protocols in PR within the center, and just while the cop moves to sit just in front of them, papers in his hands, questions scribbled on a notebook, Kim slightly turns to Lalo, voice just audible.
"Did you say anything?"
Lalo shoots him a quick, and very ugly look, which she translates to "no".
"... care less about publicity" Khalil lashes back. "The Whalen-case is still in progress. And Mr. de Guzmán is facing, as the judge aptly summarized, severe charges."
"And he was warranted bail" points out Kim. "Because your witness was unreliable."
Gina Khalil's shrewd eyes narrow.
"Kim. Be reasonable. We are adults here. Do you think what happened last night..."
"This morning." Simon corrects her, uncaring both women shoot him a murderous look.
"What happened earlier" continues Khalil, voice icy. "cannot be a coincidence."
"Do you think Fred Whalen's family orchestrated an assassination as retaliation?" asks Kim in a bland voice. "Because that would be quite ridiculous, wouldn't you say?"
"Gina" says the cop suddenly, voice deep, soothing. "How about we all take a seat and explain ourselves a bit better. Simon, would you join us, too, please?"
After both the attorney and representative grudgingly sat down, the cop turns to Kim once again, palms open, face friendly.
"Ma'am, my name is Detective Tim Roberts. I'm sure you know Miss Khalil. And this is Simon Ellis, from the Center."
The detective sighs, gets a linen handkerchief from the pocket of his shirt, and dabs his face with it. Must be the lights, must be the humidity.
He leans forward as he puts back the linen in his pocket.
"The District Attorney's Bureau asked me this morning to inquire some more from your client, you know, to hear his side of the story. We're not sure what happened, and it would be a great help if we could, y'know, clear the air. Would do good for Mr. de Guzmán as well."
Oh, I'm sure it would, thinks Kim. Would get him a free pass straight to Los Lunas.
She must tread cautiously.
"We are ready to make a formal statement as of today" she says after a small pause. "A written, well-formed statement, without any external or unwanted pressure."
"Except a man was killed. Another injured." inserts Khalil, brows knitted together. "Do you see how that would overthrow regular bureaucratic procedures?"
Kim stands his ground.
"I do not, really. The men we are talking about tried to murder my client, so, Gina, do you see how putting the blame on him is unfair?"
"No one is blaming anyone." intervenes Roberts. "We are following a lead."
Kim turns to the fidgeting lawyer, changing strategy.
"What is the Detention Center's answer again?"
"Well, it's an offer, rather." says the young man, every inch self-important. "As you might know, one of the assailants survived, but has been unconscious. Until he wakes, we are prepared to offer Mr. de Guzmán his own cell in Wing C. It won't mean unnecessary inconveniences given the doctors predicted the assailant may wa-"
"Ellis!" the detective raises his voice. Seems the lawyer isn't fond of tact.
"That's okay" says Khalil, eyeing Roberts, then turning to them. "Let this be a warning. Either Mr. de Guzmán talks or the assailant will. So why not turn this to your advantage and prevent libel if you have nothing to hide?"
"Interesting point." Kim reaches for the two papers next to Lalo's hands, jaw tight. Strange, but she dares not look at him. "But Mr. de Guzmán hasn't been incarcerated yet and has full rights to express his own wishes and complaints, if necessary."
"What complaints?" blurts out Ellis.
"Let me see" says Kim, placing the papers in front of them. "First: despite being the one attacked, I do not think you provided my client with any kind of medical care. Second: he is still in the uniform he was attacked in - you didn't even let him wash his hands. And third, you have engaged with him without my or Mr. Goodman's presence. From where I'm standing, these all sound like violation of rights."
This takes Ellis by surprise. But not the detective, who looks at Jorge de Guzmán, blinking slowly.
"Are you sure you don't want to talk to us now?" he motions to the handcuffs. "Last chance, probably."
And before Kim can say but a word, Lalo speaks.
He addresses Ellis, not the detective.
"Could my family visit me in Wing C?"
Kim tries to order her face in a way that doesn't scream of complete shock.
The other party doesn't bother with trying.
"Wha... I mean... I'm sure that could be arranged." stutters Ellis, pasty face white under the strain of the last fifteen minutes.
"My children too?" asks Lalo, tilting his head.
"Sure."
"And her?" he asks, gesturing to Kim.
"Naturally."
"Good" nods Lalo, and leans back, seemingly done with the conversation.
"Are we done?" asks Kim, echoing thought.
"Miss Wexler" starts Ellis with a special kind of condescension. "About the complaints..."
"We can discuss it at the forecoming meeting, I hope." she hands him both sheets, fleetingly checking if Lalo has filled them, which he did, probably when she was busy vomiting up bile in the bathroom. "Here you are. One of them has become redundant in light of my client accepting his new cell."
She stands up exactly when Lalo decides to stand up.
It's strange how big he is, not just in the physical sense necessarily, but his allure. A new tenseness enters the room, Kim can see Roberts' eyes widening, almost an instinct, and Khalil lean back, suspicion turning to concern. Stupidest still is Ellis who is strangely unaware of this twist in the atmosphere.
"Sure" he says, grudgingly, still seated. He checks the first paper, the request for an out-of-court hearing. "I will send an officer to move Mr. de Guzmán to his new cell."
Deep in thought, it only occurs to Kim when they are already packed and ready that she didn't finish talking with Lalo.
"Actually, can I have a word with him alone before you take him? Preferably somewhere with coffee?"
Elliot, who stands closest to that shabby, weathered door shouts out to Pete to lead them to the small patio.
"Ten minutes" he says airily, before hurrying out.
Detective Roberts doesn't spare them a second glance or a goodbye.
Unlike Gina Khalil.
"I'm going to call Ericsen tomorrow" her voice is stern, as if Kim was a schoolgirl caught sneaking out. "All of this is very unlike you, Kim."
And while her voice is hard, her eyes have pity in them.
.
"That was a pretty load of bullshit you pulled" says Kim unceremoniously, sitting down, careful to show her back to Pete, who is on the other side of the glass doors surrounding the small garden. The sun, like a disappointed father, glared down on them with full force, shade nowhere. Kim has spotted a huge green lizard sunbathing on the sandstone mural just in front of the tired bench they occupy.
Could be worse.
At least, the first round is over, and there is air outside, with the sweet-smelling wind occassionally tugging on Kim's slightly wrinkled, sweaty shirt.
She has brought coffee, which Lalo declined with a wave of his hand. He would never say, but Kim sees that he enjoys the sunlight, the five minute freedom the small patio gives, however artificial. Tilts his head back, drinks it in, eyes closed legs stretched. His hands are still cuffed, the skin reddened and dry under the metal. Under this natural light, the red of the blood looks positively brown, as if Kim has poured down half a liter of coffee on him. Or more.
"Ver la paja en el ojo ajeno, eh?" Lalo squints his eyes, amused. "Letter of complaint and the like. Tienes algunas pelotas..."
"You wanted results" retorts Kim calmly. "Here they are. First problem solved, second is incoming."
"You really thought of everything, huh." he stretches his arms, the tattoo dancing in the movement.
"I like to be prepared" says Kim, searching her bag for the de Guzmán file. "You got this story strong? How long will it hold?"
"It's not going to be a problem if Goodman arrives with the money."
"And if he..." Kim cannot finish the sentence, the thought, the scenario. Even now, life without Jimmy is like living without her shadow. She feels like a halfperson.
Focus.
In this moment, in this garden Lalo is peering down at him, with a leering sort of anticipation. Does he get off on pain, Kim wonders.
"Well, then you and I are going to have a problem." he says, voice kind, eyes cruel.
"Okay, let's say he turns up in a week. Would that still work?"
"Sure" laughs Lalo. "Ay, cualquier cosa por la reina!"
She sighs. She might have to invest in a Spanish dictionary if they are to meet daily.
"Okay, they are going to try sweating you today. What is Jorge de Guzmán doing in Albuquerque?"
"Raising children with his lovely wife."
"Do you really have a family?"
Lalo makes a sound between a whistle and a sigh.
"Doesn't everyone?" he raises his brows. "Don't you?"
"You know what I mean."
"Goodman got me a real nice gringo family. That's what your lot likes, no?"
"What, children, too?" Kim wonders who Jimmy paid and for how long. God.
"Yes!" Lalo stretches the final 's', stringlike. "Family means a lot to me. Do you have children, Mrs. Goodman?"
"No." Kim wonders when did their harmless conversation turn dangerously personal. There is a boundary to set. "But my life won't interest the lawyers."
"Mah, but we are talking, no? Where's the fun in just formalities?" he puts his cuffed on his chest. Heart on sleeves. Most of his nails are bloody.
However focused she tries to be, a sickening suspicion suddenly arises in Kim's mind: Lalo Salamanca looks like he copied most of his movements from pictures, or old movies. He even exaggerates a bit, like in those black and whites, to make it more dramatic. Make it more human.
She supresses a shudder.
"We don't have too much time. What about the debt story?"
Lalo mock-pouts, leans closer. This time, he smells of the sun, and something tart. It's far better than blood.
"Let's say.... that my father used to work on a farm where they worked him hard, for little money. He asked the owner, who was... let's say a Chilean, he asked him one day for a great sum, for us, for his family. But he put interest on the loan over the years... y mi padre no pudo soportarlo, my dad couldn't take it. He died, so it was my task to pay the debt. And I did" something black glimmers in his eyes. "But that owner...well he never lets go."
"They will want to know the name of the Chilean."
"It's an old story" shrugs Lalo. "I'll say I have some mental problems."
Well, that's apparent.
"Where was de Guzmán born?"
"Juárez, 1962."
"You couldn't forge a fake American ID?" asks Kim sarcastically.
Lalo's face freezes at that, but only for a second.
"Why, you know these parts better?" he asks, all low.
"No, I wasn't born in New Mexico." it slips out easily, although there is a siren going off in her head. Trouble.
Behind them, the door opens.
A slice of Pete's face appears, a warning.
"Two minutes."
Kim waits until the door closes again.
"Okay, so when did you get married to your lovely wife?"
"I dunno, three years ago."
They are sitting very close now: Lalo's elbow touches hers. Under the brown blood, he has freckles and birthmarks, a constellation on the skin.
"What's her name?" asks Kim.
Lalo shrugs.
"Will give her one while I'm eating my lunch." he cooes. "Come on, I need your number."
According to protocol, he isn't allowed to carry any paper with him inside the cell, so Kim writes her number on his outstretched palm, skin dry and warm. She thinks of the desert, and Jimmy, wandering with seven million bucks that will save Lalo, but damn him at the same time. And it will damn Jimmy too. Maybe that's why he is taking his time.
The blood on Lalo's palms has dried a long time ago.
When Kim presses the pen down, specks of residue fall on the bench, fall on her skirt.

Mugshot Monday - "Presidential Slogans Mug" by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild with Ethiopia Light Roast by Peace Coffee
No other US presidential candidate has ever run a campaign with the slogan, "CONVICTED FELON".
It's feeling like former president and current GOP front-runner Donald Trump may be unable to shake this new political slogan as it appears to be sticking. He was found guilty of 34 felony counts on May 31.
This Political Slogans mug was made in 2013, so it doesn't include Trump's MAGA "Make America Great Again" slogan.
I bought it after the the 2016 election, I had not realized that Reagan's slogan "Let's Make America Great Again" was co-opted by Trump's campaign.
So I thought it'd be cool to familiarize myself with these historical slogans.
I remember many of them from school like: "Who? Who? Hoover", "For a New Deal" and "I Like Ike".
But there were some others that I didn't know, like: "Keep Cool-idge", "Give 'Em Hell Harry!", and "Turn the Rascals Out". 😂
It doesn't look like mug maker is going to refresh the design to include modern slogans, but I'd make a case to go with the felon one rather than the MAGA one for 45.
Has someone created a red MAGA hat yet that says "CONVICTED FELON"? Guessing we'll see it soon enough. I think it's quite fitting.
Btw, for all you political nerds, here's a list of all the slogans on my mug matched to presidential campaigns. Enjoy!

What is the headverse version of Stephanie Brown like?
Daughter of registered nurse Agnes Crystal Bellinger-Brown and Arthur Brown*, Steph grew up in the shadow of not only her father's criminal career and eventual death, but also the destruction of large parts of Gotham by Bane. Her mother became addicted to prescription painkillers and Steph struggled at school, constantly getting in fights despite (or because of) her intimidating intellect and perfect test scores.
Inspired by a mix of resentment for her criminal father and her memory of Batman's actions in defeating Bane, Steph became Spoiler, undermining her father specifically before branching out to Gotham's larger criminal underbelly...naturally bringing her to the attention of Batman, though it was ultimately his apprentices Tim Drake and Harper Row would become most significant her life. Steph and Tim would date briefly, but Harper would go on to be the love of Steph's life, helping to raise her child Leslie while Steph was in med school.
While always Spoiler at heart, Steph played a few roles in the Gotham Knights, filling in as Robin and Batgirl alongside Tim and Cass, and eventually spending some time in the role of Nightwing before Cheyenne Fremont eventually took the mantle. While capable in a fight, Steph's inventiveness and quick-thinking always served her better than the martial arts Cass was champion in.
The father of Steph's child, Broderick March, has a connection to Batman as well, the stepson of Bruce's older sibling Samantha Thomas Wayne when they were living as "Lincoln March" and feigning a loving marriage to Rebecca March (The Court of Owls' Doctor Leviticus). With Rebecca's experiments on both Brody and Dexter Dent (at the time reconditioned to believe he was a fictitious child named "Turner Hayes" supposedly orphaned by Batman), it remains to be seen if Leslie Brown carries any generational side effects from the traces of Electrum in her father's body...
*former host of the game show Think Thank Thunk, source of an infamous bit of lost media after Arthur attempted to murder three people associated with the show. The footage is believed to be in the possession of the Wayne Estate.
