Hello! I'm wondering if you can recommend any good sources to learn about precolonial history of what's now southern Utah?
I know people who live near the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments who are anxious about Trump reducing the protected lands again, like he did in his last presidency. I've been trying to learn about these places, but I am not doing a good job finding out what I'm interested in - a sense of the history and how it all connects together.
Thank you! No worries if this is not your area or you don't have time for this. I've never sent a tumblr ask before, so am unsure of proper ask decorum. I enjoy your blog, and a recent post made me think you might have suggestions :)
Thank you!
Utah is a little bit farther north of where I study (my research focuses on central and southern Arizona and western New Mexico with a bit of northern Sonora and Chihuahua), but is an important part of the history of the Southwest, particularly as an interaction zone between the Puebloan farmers and the more frequently nomadic Rocky Mountains and Great Basin peoples like the ancestral Utes and Paiutes and later Diné and Comanche. Though I don't do a whole lot of work there, several of my colleagues do!
Some resources that might be of interest to you:
Introducing the Fremont, an issue of Archaeology Southwest Magazine that brings together articles aimed at a popular audience about the archaeological cultures of central and northern Utah;
The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, the modern group of five federally recognized tribes who co-manage the Bears Ears monument;
The Utah American Indian Digital Archive, a somewhat cursory but helpful hub of Utah-specific Native history;
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, a really fantastic archaeological research and education center in southwestern Colorado that does a LOT of research on the northern Southwest, including southern Utah. Their American Indian Knowledge section has videos and interactive timelines on the history of the region, as well as this video presentation about Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings in southeastern Utah in 1150–1300 CE. They do a LOT of webinar videos for the public on different archaeology topics of the US Southwest.
If you want to look into the archaeological work, the archaeological culture-term for the ancient peoples of Utah and Nevada is "Fremont culture," and people working in that area include Katie K. Richards and James Allison. Working with Ancestral Pueblo sites in southern Utah is Ben Bellorado, with ethno-historic Ute rock art in Colorado and Utah is Mairead Doery, and with Navajo history and archaeology is Wade Campbell. (You'll notice that most of these people have connections to Crow Canyon. This is because Crow Canyon is THE place to go for northern Southwest research!)

Sandra “Sandy” Milton, 28 (USA 1990)

28-year-old Sandra Earles Milton had a high school education and was an assembly worker at a household appliance factory. She had already been married as a teenager and then divorced from an abusive husband. Now she was a single mother taking care of her 3 kids.
When Sandra’s kids were 10, 5 and 7, she was pregnant with her 4th baby. It is unclear if her ex-husband was the father.
Probably feeling too overwhelmed for another baby, Sandra hired a babysitter for her kids and then drove to an abortion facility called Toledo Medical Services in Ohio. The abortionist was Carl Armstrong. The abortion was done at 10:00 AM and she was discharged for the 90-minute drive home to Sandusky.
Sandra was already in terrible condition by the time she got home. The babysitter was so alarmed with Sandra’s symptoms that she stayed at the house with the children for three hours as the young mother slipped in and out of consciousness and suffered pain and abdominal swelling. The babysitter called the abortion facility three times, but the first two times the facility insisted that the symptoms were normal. The third time the babysitter called, she got no response at all, so she called an ambulance instead. Sandra was pronounced dead on arrival at Fremont Memorial Hospital at 6:01 PM.
The autopsy found a 1-inch gash in Sandra’s uterus. Her abdomen was full of blood. She had bled to death at home with her children— all without outwardly losing a drop of blood.
Protestors at the abortion facility that killed Sandra advocated for justice and even distributed copies of her death certificate. As one activist told the news, “…everybody's always saying, “Give us proof. Give us proof.” We had the proof right in our hands. We didn't want Sandra to lie cold and dead in her grave and forgotten.”
Even with some hard circumstances in her life, friends described Sandra as "always happy, always bubbly. She always had places to go and things to do." Known as Sandy to her loved ones, she liked card games, attending ceramics classes, pizza and watching movies. Her death was not only an injustice but a tragedy, with a community hurting from the loss of a mother, daughter and friend.

Personal Tax Planning California: Smart Strategies to Save More
Managing your taxes effectively is crucial for keeping more of your hard-earned money while staying compliant with tax laws. Personal tax planning California can help individuals reduce their tax liabilities and maximize savings through smart financial strategies. Whether you’re a salaried employee, a freelancer, or a small business owner, proper planning ensures you take advantage of every available deduction and credit.

In this blog, we’ll explore key tax-saving strategies to help you optimize your financial future.
1. Understand Your Tax Bracket
One of the first steps in personal tax planning California is knowing your tax bracket. The U.S. tax system is progressive, meaning the more you earn, the higher your tax rate. Understanding where you fall within the tax brackets can help you make informed decisions about deductions, investments, and contributions to tax-advantaged accounts.
2. Maximize Tax-Deductible Contributions
A great way to reduce taxable income is by contributing to tax-advantaged accounts such as:
401(k) or IRA: Contributions to these retirement accounts lower your taxable income while helping you save for the future.
Health Savings Account (HSA): If you have a high-deductible health plan, contributing to an HSA allows you to save money tax-free for medical expenses.
Flexible Spending Account (FSA): This account helps cover healthcare and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars.
These contributions play a vital role in tax planning for individuals California, as they can significantly lower tax burdens.
3. Take Advantage of Tax Credits
Tax credits directly reduce your tax liability, making them more valuable than deductions. Some common tax credits include:
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC): Designed for low- to moderate-income individuals.
Child Tax Credit: Provides relief for families with dependent children.
Education Credits: The American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning credits can help offset higher education costs.
By leveraging these credits, you can reduce your overall tax bill effectively.
4. Organize Your Deductions
Itemizing deductions can sometimes result in greater tax savings than taking the standard deduction. Common itemized deductions include:
Mortgage interest
Property taxes
Medical expenses exceeding a certain threshold
Charitable donations
If your deductible expenses exceed the standard deduction amount, itemizing can be a beneficial strategy for personal tax planning California.
5. Plan for Capital Gains and Losses
If you invest in stocks, real estate, or other assets, capital gains taxes can impact your earnings. To minimize taxes:
Hold investments for more than a year to benefit from lower long-term capital gains tax rates.
Offset gains by strategically selling underperforming investments.
Consider tax-loss harvesting to balance out taxable gains.
Effective capital gains management is a crucial part of tax planning for individuals in California who have investment portfolios.
6. Seek Professional Tax Planning Assistance
Tax laws are constantly changing, making it essential to have expert guidance. A professional tax planner can:
Identify the best strategies based on your income and financial goals.
Ensure compliance with California tax laws.
Help with filing tax returns accurately and efficiently.
Conclusion
Effective personal tax planning California requires smart strategies, proactive decision-making, and expert guidance. At Optimize Accounting Solutions, we specialize in tax planning for individuals California, helping clients reduce their tax burdens while maximizing savings. Our expert team ensures you take full advantage of tax deductions, credits, and legal tax-saving opportunities. Craft Beer Festivals: Why They’re a Must-Attend for Beer Lovers
Few experiences can rival the excitement and charm of a craft beer festival for beer enthusiasts. Such a collection allows those attending to sample a vast range of craft beers, mingle with fellow fanatics, and support local breweries while coming together in such a beautiful setting. The best part if you are in the Bay Area and looking for a lively experience; visiting a craft beer festival hosted by a brewery in Fremont would be a no-brainer. Read on for why.
Discover New Flavors
Craft beer festivals are the perfect place to explore a diverse selection of beer styles. Whether you prefer hoppy IPAs, smooth stouts, or fruity sours, there's something for every palate. Breweries often use these events to showcase seasonal or experimental brews, giving attendees a chance to taste creations that might not be available elsewhere. For instance, a Fremont brewery can include small batch-only releases within the festivals for local beer enthusiasts to experience unique, locally inspired flavors.
Support Local Businesses
A craft beer festival is an excellent opportunity to support the local breweries and business ventures. Often, the organization behind the event comes from within the brewing community itself, and funds are channeled into funding various initiatives within the area. Whenever you visit a Fremont-based brewery's event, you will be contributing to the development of Fremont craft beers and funding enthusiastic brewers' ongoing high-quality work.
Meet the Brewers
One of the best things about craft beer festivals is the opportunity to meet the people behind your favorite brews. Brewers are usually present at these events, and they are more than happy to share their knowledge and discuss their craft. Engaging with brewers from a brewery in Fremont, for example, can provide valuable insight into the brewing process, the inspiration behind their creations, and the challenges they face in the industry. This personal interaction adds an appreciation to the beers you like to drink.
Enjoy a Sense of Community
Apart from being a stage for great brews, these festivals are essentially social events for people to share their love and company. Whether going to the festival with friends or strangers, these craft beer festivals share a sense of camaraderie among beer aficionados. Therefore, a brewery holding a festival in Fremont means that locals as well as visitors may gather easily to socialize with those who share one's passion for craft beers.
Learn About Beer Culture
If you’re new to craft beer or want to deepen your knowledge, a festival is a fantastic place to start. Many events include educational sessions, such as beer tasting workshops or discussions on brewing techniques. A brewery in Fremont might even offer guided tours of its facilities during the festival, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite beers are made. This is an experience that enhances your understanding of beer culture and appreciation of the craft.
Matched and Food Pairings
Food and beer go hand in hand, so naturally, craft beer festivals feature a variety of gourmet food options to complement the brews. From gourmet food trucks to curated pairing situations, these events show how different beer styles can enhance the flavor of different dishes. Imagine enjoying the perfect pairing meal from a Fremont brewery while enjoying their latest craft beer release—it's an experience that doesn't get better.
Exclusive Merchandise and Souvenirs
Craft beer festivals often have exclusive merchandise, such as branded glassware, apparel, and other memorabilia. These are perfect keepsakes or gifts for fellow beer enthusiasts. A brewery in Fremont hosting a festival might even collaborate with local artists to create one-of-a-kind designs that reflect the community's spirit and creativity.
Entertainment and Activities
Apart from beer, most festivals would feature live music, games, and many more. These can be other additional sources of entertainment to cater for the rest beyond beer consumption. A brewery in Fremont might hold performances by local bands, DJs, or engaging interactive activities, providing an electrifying experience for all.
How to make the best of a craft beer festival
-> To fully appreciate your craft beer festival experience, consider the following tips:
-> Research breweries and beers so you can determine which ones are must-tries.
-> Drinking water during the event will help you keep pace and not get dehydrated.
-> If you are tasting multiple beers, it is necessary to have a safe ride home.
-> The popular events can get crowded, so it is better to arrive early and have ample time to explore without feeling rushed.
-> Jot down the names of your favorite beers and breweries to revisit them later.
Why Fremont is a Perfect Destination

Patricia Skeels, BJU Class of 1961.
Born in Roseburg on Dec. 4, 1938, to Thelma (Joyce) and Freddie Rae Scherner, Patsy had three siblings: Carolyn Scherner, Marilee Scherner Olson and Thomas Scherner. She attended Fullerton II Elementary, Central Junior High (destroyed by the Roseburg Blast of '59) and graduated from Roseburg High School in 1957, where she met her high school sweetheart, Fred Skeels. Patsy attended Linfield College in McMinnville before transferring to Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where both she and Fred graduated with degrees in education. Their first two children, Diana Liz and Leanne Marie, were born in South Carolina and their third child, Serena Lynn, was born in Astoria, Oregon.
After graduate school at the University of Oregon, Patsy taught eighth grade English at Joseph Lane Junior High in Roseburg while Fred taught math at Fremont. They were active members of the Conservative Baptist Church (now Wellspring) and taught adult Sunday school classes over the years.
Patsy and Fred raised their three daughters in the home they built on the North Umpqua River, with the little girls lending a hand. The river became an integral part of their lives, offering swimming, fishing and blackberry picking. Patsy taught her daughters to ride and train horses as well as how to show confidence by writing and speaking clearly. Patsy's life passion was reading. From sixth grade until she could no longer see the words, she read at least a book a week. This habit led her to acquire extensive knowledge of literature and the world, which she shared through incisive wisdom at opportune moments.
After retirement, Patsy and Fred built a home on Tenmile Lake, a gathering spot for family and friends. She welcomed everyone into her home without judgment. She spent countless hours at the lake researching and documenting family history. For their 50th wedding anniversary, Patsy took the entire family to Disneyland where Patsy and Fred had visited on their honeymoon.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Frederick Verl Skeels, daughters Diana Liz Dettwyler of Salem, Oregon, Leanne Marie Bennett (Steve), of Twin Falls, Idaho and Serena Lynn Morones (Tony), of Idanha, Oregon, 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Marilee Scherner Olson.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on July 25, 2024, at Wellspring Bible Fellowship in Roseburg at 2245 NW Kline St. A reception in the Fireside Room will follow.
