Exploring the Future of Web Development in Melbourne: Opportunities and Challenges
In the heart of Australia, Melbourne stands as a hub of innovation and creativity. As one of the leading cities for technology and business, Melbourne is experiencing a burgeoning wave of advancements in web development. Companies specializing in web development Melbourne, including web design companies Melbourne and website development Melbourne, are at the forefront of this evolution. With the fast advancement of digital technology, the environment of web development is always changing, bringing both tremendous potential and severe problems for local businesses, particularly in the field of small company web design Melbourne.
The Current State of Web Development in Melbourne
Melbourne is already home to a rich ecosystem of tech startups, established companies, and a multitude of freelancers in the web development scene. As businesses increasingly recognize the importance of having an online presence, the demand for high-quality web development services is witnessing exponential growth. This shift has prompted a myriad of web design companies in Melbourne to emerge, bringing with them diverse talents, skills, and approaches to digital design and development.
Furthermore, Melbourne's vibrant tech community fosters an environment rich with innovation. Collaborations between startups and established firms create a culture that thrives on shared knowledge, leading to the exploration of new technologies, frameworks, and creative solutions that enhance the overall user experience.
Opportunities in Web Development
Embracing Emerging Technologies
As technology continues to evolve, so too does the opportunity for web development professionals in Melbourne. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and progressive web apps (PWAs) into web development has the potential to transform how websites are produced and consumed. For local web developers, this entails adopting new technologies and strategies that may set their business apart from competition.
AI-driven design tools can assist web design companies in Melbourne to create websites tailored to users' preferences, enhancing user experience and engagement. Furthermore, embracing PWAs can lead to faster loading times and improved functionality, making websites more accessible across various devices.
Small Business Growth
Another exciting avenue in the Melbourne web development sector is targeted towards small business web design. As small enterprises recognize the need for a strong online presence, demand for customized, user-friendly websites is on the rise. Web design company Melbourne is evolving to meet this demand by providing cost-effective solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of small businesses.
Specialized services focused on local businesses can help level the playing field, allowing smaller enterprises to compete more effectively with larger corporations. Crafting websites that resonate with local audiences can foster brand loyalty and drive traffic, illustrating the vital role web development plays in business sustainability and growth.
Remote Work and Collaboration
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to remote work, leading many web development companies in Melbourne to embrace remote collaboration. This shift not only allows businesses to tap into a wider talent pool but also enables flexible working conditions that can lead to heightened creativity and productivity.
Remote work is particularly beneficial for small web design teams. These companies can minimize overhead costs while expanding their reach to clients beyond Melbourne, effectively transforming local businesses into global players.
Challenges in Web Development
Keeping Pace with Rapid Technological Changes
While the opportunities for growth are abundant, web development companies in Melbourne face the challenge of keeping pace with rapid technological advancements. With the continuous evolution of programming languages, frameworks, and tools, staying updated is imperative for survival in this competitive landscape.
Developers must engage in continuous learning and adapt to changing market demands. Failure to do so may result in outdated skill sets, rendering some companies incapable of delivering high-quality services that clients expect.
Cybersecurity Concerns
As more organisations shift to digital platforms, worries about data security and privacy have reached an all-time high. Website creation in Melbourne must face these cybersecurity problems straight on. Clients are increasingly looking for assurance that their websites are safe and that client data is properly secured.
Web development companies need to implement robust security protocols, compliance with regulations such as the Australian Privacy Act, and ensure that their development practices adhere to the highest security standards. Failure to do so might have disastrous effects for both clients and the company's image.
Over-Saturation of the Market
With the demand for web development services rising, Melbourne has seen a significant influx of new players entering the market. This over-saturation can make it difficult for established companies to maintain a competitive edge, particularly in the realm of small business web design Melbourne.
In such a crowded space, distinguishing oneself through unique selling propositions and high-quality service becomes paramount. Companies must innovate, not just in the technology they use, but in their marketing strategies and client engagement practices as well.
Navigating the Future of Web Development
To thrive in the changing landscape of web development in Melbourne, companies must adopt proactive strategies that embrace both opportunities and challenges:
1. Continuous Learning and Adaptation: Web development professionals should prioritize ongoing education and skills development. Whether attending workshops, online courses, or joining professional networks, investing in personal and team growth is crucial.
2. Focus on Security: Building robust security measures and being transparent about privacy strategies can help to establish trust with clients, making security a competitive advantage.
3. Niche Expertise: By specializing in specific industries or technologies, web design companies in Melbourne can differentiate themselves from competitors and better serve a targeted audience.
4. Enhanced Collaboration: Leveraging remote team dynamics can help companies tap into global talent while maintaining high productivity.
5. Client Education: There is a need for web development firms to educate potential clients about the importance of investing in professional web development. By clearly communicating the value of high-quality design and development, companies can foster stronger relationships with small businesses seeking web solutions.
The future of web development in Melbourne is bright, with ample opportunities for growth and success amidst the challenges that lie ahead. With a commitment to embracing technology, maintaining high standards of security, and focusing on client needs, web development companies can carve out their niche in this dynamic market. Whether through innovative platforms or exceptional small business web design, the avenues for creativity are limitless. By staying attuned to industry trends and client demands, web development firms in Melbourne can continue to thrive in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Why to Hire Mobile App Developers
If you want to build a mobile app for your business, it's important to hire a qualified developer. This will help you ensure that the app has the best features and functionality possible.
You have a lot of options to choose from when hiring an app developers in melbourne. These include freelancers, remote employees, or IT outsourcing companies.
Hire Mobile App Developers in Melbourne
Cost-effectiveness
Mobile apps are becoming increasingly critical to businesses. Research shows that customers spent an average of 36% more on apps last year than they did in 2017.
Developing a mobile app can be expensive, so it’s important to hire the right team for the job. Choosing a team of professionals who are specialized in your industry and know how to best serve your needs will help you cut costs without sacrificing quality or functionality.
The cost of hiring a developer depends on several factors, including location and experience. Generally, the more expertise a developer has, the higher his rate will be per hour.
Time-saving
Choosing to hire mobile app development company in melbourne is one of the most time-saving decisions you can make. Developing apps takes a lot of time, and even after launch, there are updates and enhancements to think about.
However, with a dedicated team by your side, you can focus on improving the functionality and refining the design without having to worry about time zones.
You can hire an in-house team or an external team of developers, depending on your business goals. The first option is best for small and mid-sized companies that already have a solid budget, well-settled SDLC (software development lifecycle), and need additional specialists.
Reliability
If you’re planning to hire mobile app developers for your company, it’s important that they are reliable. The process of developing an app can take several months and it’s important to choose someone who will be able to help your team deliver results.
Reliability can be measured through different methods, but one of the easiest ways is to measure test-retest reliability. It involves giving the same test to a group of people at different times and comparing their scores. This is commonly done by graphing the data in a scatterplot and computing Pearson’s r.
Scalability
Whether you are developing a mobile app for your business or personal use, scalability is an essential part of the process. Without it, your app will not be able to manage the increasing user traffic and run smoothly.
Using cloud services like AWS, you can set the parameters for auto-scaling to meet your future app usage demands. It is a reliable and flexible approach to scalability.
Scalability also allows you to implement new features quickly and easily. This helps you get more feedback and improve your app.
Before hiring a mobile app developer, ask about their scalability testing practices and performance monitoring techniques. You should also look at how they handle bugs and troubleshooting processes.
Security
When hiring mobile app development in melbourne, it is important to consider the security measures they will take. This will help ensure that your app stays safe and secure from hackers.
Moreover, it will also protect your customers’ sensitive data from unauthorized users. Businesses often gather valuable customer information through their apps and use it for a variety of purposes.
However, hackers have been able to access this information and misuse it for malicious purposes. Hence, mobile app security is an absolute must for any business.
When building your app, it is important to encrypt the information stored on the device and the application code. You can do this by using Transport Layer Security (TLS).

How to hire a mobile app developer in Melbourne?
Smartphones have formed an essential part of our daily lives, and their capabilities extend beyond simply receiving and sending calls and texts. It also includes more sophisticated yet crucial activities. Mobile applications are the differentiating characteristic of smartphones that make them so desirable. Mobile applications serve to enhance the functionality of smartphones, making personal and professional tasks easier and faster.
App developers Melbourne are especially important for businesses because they help them build an online reputation, get new clients, and increase income. More and more organizations are jumping on the mobile app platform and creating their own mobile app to communicate with existing and potential clients.
Any firm contemplating establishing its own app has three options: utilise an in-house IT programmer, engage a freelance developer, or hire a mobile app development company. The following are eight advantages of using a digital marketing agency for your app project. An application development business is made up of a team of specialists that includes project administrators, designers, developers, and so on. Each of these persons has a certain job to play, and collectively, they provide expert full-cycle services.
Tumblr media
Excellent for new businesses and large projects:
One of the primary advantages of choosing a mobile app development firm is that you will receive a wide range of expert services, ranging from business advising to business analysis, refers to decisions to aftercare assistance. Besides a freelancing would be unable to produce excellence in any of these categories, an organization will provide you with these services in an effective way. A professional design company is ideal for startup businesses since they can assist companies in developing a monetization plan already before the product is launched.
Expenditure:
Another significant advantage of selecting a mobile application development business over an in-house team or freelancer When you outsourcing or engage a development business, you should only be charged for the work that they complete for you; their invoicing may be per hour or a one-time flat amount.
Your payment will be in accordance with the terms of your arrangement with the organization. This reduces your overhead costs and ensures you have a more inexpensive operational and commercial expense. The expense of utilising an in-house team would have been greater since you would have had to pay for training and outfitting your rescue team.
Companies, unlike freelancers, cannot just pack their belongings and leave; they cannot simply vanish. This is advantageous to the client. Similarly, businesses are becoming increasingly concerned about security. They ensure that the client's applications and data are kept secure. It is simpler to put your faith in them than in freelancers.
Process optimization:
Choosing a mobile app development firm helps you to take advantage of workflow optimization. Your communications will be with the management team, who will provide you with regular updates on the progress of your project. You can quickly approve modifications or request changes.
A well-organized workflow will undoubtedly aid in meeting deadlines. Hiring a app developers Melbourne provides you access to a support crew that is available around the clock. In contrast to a freelancer, who may be absent due to personal reasons or overburdened by work, someone on a software development will always be accessible to respond to your requests.
Hiring a corporation also ensures continuity. If the primary developer on your project becomes ill or quits the firm, someone else may take over instantly with no wastage of information, money, or data. However, such advantages are not accessible to freelancers.
Reducing technical issues:
Doing mobile app development company business, especially online, may be tricky. There is a possibility of fraud or other legal difficulties. Hiring the services of professional mobile app developers might assist to minimise or lessen the likelihood of legal complications. Because these businesses are legal business organisations, they provide prosperity and security of mind. You may be confident that you will not be duped and that the firm will follow the terms of the settlement they established with you. The organisation will also relieve you of a lot of stress by managing all of the paperwork required to begin your job.
Organizations have a reputation, and they go to great lengths to defend it. As a result, they endeavour to provide high-quality items that receive excellent comments after launch. Hiring a development firm ensures that you will receive the highest quality since your app will be included in their portfolio. If your app looks awful, their portfolio will seem even worse. Also, if their customer service is poor, you will undoubtedly inform any other possible consumer that inquires.
The following point is related to this one. Companies that care about their goods are more competent at developing long-term trusting connections with their particular clientele. In the long term, concentrating on project execution for customers is more beneficial than focusing on the amount of receiving projects.
Associate Google
Google's mobile application development unit created this app. The software uses ai techniques. It is a voice assistant programme that allows us to communicate more effortlessly with their gadgets. It requires certain vocal instructions, so instead of just using your fingers to navigate around your smartphone, you may issue orders and the assistants will perform out your demand.
Detailed mobile app manufacturing
A mobile app development company development business may provide benefits that no one else can, whether you are a start-up, a mid-sized enterprise, or a large brand. Companies can assist you with everything that is a part of the mobile application development process, from a skill set spanning advanced technologies and disciplines to industry-tested commercial acumen.
These processes include business advice and analysis, concept appraisal, testing and debugging, and, finally, long-term maintenance and support. The finest thing is that the entire bundle is wrapped in a business, contract-based professional relationship. You may also seek their assistance in determining the ideal monetization approach since before you launched your app.
Low-cost application development
Users always know what you're paying for or how long you'll have to shoulder those costs. Similarly, employing an in-house mobile app development team would simply increase your costs for training, not to mention the expense of infrastructure.
Furthermore, mobile app development businesses must maintain a level of services that necessitates the use of up-to-date tools, licences, certifications, and software. As a result, you will avoid legal problems. Furthermore, because they have a larger clientele, they are well aware of what may go wrong throughout the procedure and are up to date on the current trends in the industry.
To avoid these situations and stay within your budget, the ideal approach is to engage a mobile app development firm. This is because transferring your needs to a specialised firm ensures that you are only charged for what they supply. You may also select from a variety of models such as fixed-cost, hourly, and so on.
Topped network accessibility
Hiring freelance mobile programmers is a dangerous business. Due to personal responsibilities or health concerns, they may be unavailable to make this project successful at critical periods. Furthermore, they are sometimes overburdened with employment and hence neglect to attend to your business.
That is not the situation with mobile app development businesses. If one of the programmers makes a decision or becomes ill, there has to be someone to take his or her place. Furthermore, you may contact them at any time of day or night to request help and servicing.
conclusion:
There are several advantages to conducting business through the digital media. However, this does not necessarily imply that you are free of problems in general. After all, the possibility of fraud and legal difficulties should never be neglected.
Another reason to always choose India App Developer businesses above other options Reputable firms assist you in reducing your possibilities of getting into legal pitfalls. As legal entities, they provide you with security and peace of mind, allowing you to rest comfortable with an agreement that clearly states all of the provisions.
Furthermore, they will assist you in obtaining all of the necessary documentation from the start. As a result, you will not have to go through an unpleasant procedure. The development organisation's package includes services such as business concept examination, analytics, and advice, development, along with operations and maintenance.
Because these services are provided by a single professional specialist, you establish a contractual connection. This method makes your job easier because you won't have to hunt for many contractors to handle different sections of the same project. Such advantages undoubtedly distinguish the app development firm from individual freelancers who may not be able to provide such services.

‘I was that kid who was hustling from an early age and had my first “business” at 14,’ says Cassie Byrnes. She even had a ‘very short-lived but very lucrative’ eBay business selling vintage clothes in the early days of online marketplaces.
A fascination with vintage fashion prints spurred Cassie to make the move from Brisbane to Melbourne in 2012 to study Textile Design at RMIT – despite having never been to Victoria before! Luckily – it was the right move. She quickly fell in love with textiles, and threw herself into her studies, working like ‘a psycho’ to excel in her course. Then, in 2016, not long after graduating, Cassie launched her own brand, Variety Hour, working freelance on the side to prop up her new business.
‘The year I started my business, my parents were on the verge of bankruptcy after working incredibly hard in their small business for the past three decades,’ she says. ‘It was heartbreaking, but I also knew I was completely on my own, there was no safety net and no one to fall back on. I definitely get my resilience from them. It also taught me that just working hard does not guarantee success, and you have to remain nimble and adaptable to change.’
Today, Cassie manages a team of five people, working from their dreamy Gertrude Street studio above the Variety Hour retail store! In-between designing new ranges for Variety Hour, and managing her retail store, Cassie still regularly collaborates with with big brands, designing prints for the likes of Nike, Anthropologie and Uniqlo.
Cassie has big picture goals for the future of Variety Hour. She wants to get her team up to full-time hours, experiment with new applications like jacquard weaving and embroidery, and do more to celebrate body diversity (VH clothes now go up to size 22!). In doing all that, Cassie sees the domino effect it has on supporting local manufacturing, creativity in the textiles industry, and promoting size inclusivity among Australian women.
Imagine if every day was as colourful as this!
First Thing
I wake up around 7am to the soothing sounds of my daughter either singing or yelling from her cot – my alarm now for the past 18 months.
I pretend I am asleep long enough for my husband to get Lottie up and start breakfast, then I lie in bed contemplating my existence in the world. Eventually I accept my reality but like clockwork it’s way too late and it’s a mad rush to get out the door within 20 minutes (in case you didnt realise I am  definitely not a morning person). Having once worked a solid decade in hospitality, I will forever be a night owl, unfortunately my daughter has still yet to receive that memo and I have to find a way to function in the mornings.
Morning
After getting into the car and breathing a sigh of relief, I turn on ABC Melbourne and listen to Virginia Trioli on my way to drop Lottie off at daycare in Fitzroy. I usually get sucked into hanging out with her adorable baby friends and chatting to the teachers before grabbing a coffee at Gabriel and making my way to the Variety Hour office, just around the corner on Gertrude Street.
The morning is a whirlwind of emails and planning out the day. I am a meticulous planner (because I am also a meticulous procrastinator) and have forced myself over the years to get more organised.
The team arrives between 9-10am and we gasbag about life, which eventually turns into chat about this week’s production dramas and what content we have on the horizon. Penny and I spend the morning creating content, today we are filming our monthly vlog. We finalise an upcoming photoshoot and go over our plans for socials for the week. Our office sits above our shop so I might head downstairs to check in with Hayley, our shop girl.
Lunchtime
I don’t really eat breakfast so by midday I am starving. I love having lunch with the team so I usually see someone start to prepare their lunch and I tag along for the adventure. Having lunch together means we can chat freely about non-work stuff and we always have interesting convos. It gives me a chance to let out all that pent up conversation that I have pushed down all morning while trying to focus on work.
Afternoon
I spend my afternoon bouncing around working with the team. I spend some time with Jess – our production manager. We currently have three collections on the go: finishing winter and getting the last production run from our manufacturer; sampling our Classics collection; and designing new cuts and finalising prints for summer. There are always a billion things to decide on, from choosing zip colours to how many centimetres we need to take off a sleeve.
I spend time with our designer sarah on our homewares collection, which is a work in progress at the moment. We feel a bunch of fabric strike-offs and look at samples. There is a lot of time spent in the office touching fabrics and discussing details people wouldn’t probably think about. Today Sarah and I had a great chat/debate about what is the perfect shade of olive.
Evening
At 5pm I clock off for the arvo and go pick up Lottie and make our way home. Between 5-8pm is baby/family time and I let myself have that and try to put work aside. My husband has become a domestic goddess since Lottie was born and normally cooks us all dinner. We have a pretty boring but delicious roster of favourites that are quick and healthy. We both play sports so sometimes one of us runs out of the house if it’s an early game.
After Lottie goes to sleep, I go up to the home office and start the night shift. I always get my creative work done in these hours because it’s quiet and uninterrupted. I still have not mastered getting print creation done while at the studio with people around, but I am sure that will come with practice.
I put on some terrible but fab TV like Real Housewives and paint in my sketchbook or work on a new print. This week I am deep into our new summer 2021 collection. I have to be asleep by midnight because anything later I am an actual mess of a human the next day and get nothing done. I wrap up work around 11pm.
Tumblr media

Cassie’s greatest moments of creativity come at night, so after dinner she heads to her home office, puts on some trashy TV in the background and gets to work with her paints and sketchbook. Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.

An explosion of colour! Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.
Right now I’m listening to, watching, and reading…
Listening: Love a podcast these days. My favourites are You’re Wrong About, How I Built This and The Indicator
Watching: Peppa Pig, CoComelon and The Wiggles
Reading: ‘Who Gets to Be Smart‘ by Bri Lee
I get my best work done when…
I have the entire day and evening in the studio. I usually do this on a Sunday while no one else is around and all is quiet in the world.
My productivity tool/tip is…
Turn your phone off and put it really far away (like, a different floor of your house). I deleted the email app from my phone a while back now because I read a great quote that called emails ‘someone else’s to do list’. I really try to keep things as separate as possible because my work and home life are so intertwined.
A philosophy I live and work by is…
Be a nice person.
Something I’ve learned the hard way is…
Creativity needs to be nurtured. When you are a creative that also happens to run a small business, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day running of things. I learnt back in 2019 that you need to work a daily/weekly practice into your routine. A time to ponder and experiment by sketching, painting or writing that you can look back on and draw from when looking for inspiration.
Variety Hour’s 2021 winter collection has just dropped! Shop online now, or pop in to their gorgeous shop at 155 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy (open Wed – Sun).

10 Inspiring Side Projects From Designers
Tumblr media
Side projects can help to demonstrate your passion and enthusiasm for design to future clients or employers and can create a great new addition to your design portfolio. Side projects are a way you can work on things you want to work on — rather than just ones which are bringing in the money. Whether it turns out to be artistic or experimental, it can be great in taking you out of your everyday routine and leave you with a true feeling of satisfaction.
There’s never been a better time to start a side project. Here are some of our favorite designer side projects, guaranteed to inspire.
Christopher Simmons – The message is medium rare
The Message is Medium Rare was a side project created by designer Christopher Simmons, who runs MINE, a San Francisco design office. He wanted a side project to find inspiration and stay creative and found that through looking at the world both critically and in wonder, that there were lessons to be learnt everywhere and insights to be had.
He decided to investigate this idea by eating a burger a week and sharing the lessons each one teaches. The design and concept of the project is wonderfully simple, yet easy to get lost in amidst the hidden meanings sandwiched between slices of bread, beef and ketchup. The project has featured in many press outlets and is a great example of how a side project can raise your profile.
Tumblr media
Davey Heuser – IconJar
Dutch designer Davey Heuser decided to take on a side project a few years ago, developing IconJar with fellow designer Curtis Hard. A Mac App for organizing and managing icons. It is essentially a library container that allows you to drop any icon in any format and organise them into sets (collections) and groups (folders). It’s easy to use and to export your icons both quickly and accurately.
It’s a great side project that is used by some of the biggest companies out there, including Google, Shopify, and Microsoft.
Tumblr media
Frank Chimero – The Shape of Design
NYC-based designer Frank Chimero decided to self-publish a book as his side project. Back in 2011 he created the book The Shape of Design, a small handbook about designing that Frank wished was available to him when he began his own career in the field.
The concept was originally given as a talk by Frank at the Build Conference back in November 2010, where he was encouraged by the response and decided to expand on some of its themes in a book. It’s now used in design classrooms all around the world as foundational reading and has grown its audience to include chefs, woodworkers, writers and other creatives, all of which praise the book highly.
Tumblr media
Nguyen Le – Process Masterclass
Nguyen Lee is an independent designer based in Melbourne who decided to start a side project teaching others about design. He called this Process Masterclass and it focuses on teaching new and aspiring designers how to improve their skills, provide more excellent value to their clients and create reliable design processes.
Over 1,000 designers have taken the course and this includes those who have worked at large companies such as Slack, Stripe, Framer, Ueno, Instrument, and Huge inc.
Tumblr media
Lauren Hom – Passion to Paid
Passion to Paid is the side project of designer Lauren Hom and is an online creative bootcamp on how to create a killer passion project that will kickstart your career. Lauren cites side projects as the no.1 reason she was able to grow her business as a freelance illustrator and find success at such a young age and this course is here to help others do the same.
Content includes how to improve your lettering skills, how to get paid for your work, and how to come up with your next big idea. The Passion to Paid course is currently paused until mid-2020, but you can join the waitlist.
Tumblr media
Chandan Mishra – Design Languages
Chandan Mishra is a designer from Pune, India whose side project is Design Languages. Developed with Varun Srinivas, it is a curated list of design languages and systems from a range of companies. It was born from the frustration of having to hunt for and research design systems, wasting time and hitting dead ends. It is a essentially a curated library for design languages, design systems, and front-end frameworks and it’s free to use too!
Tumblr media
Jessica Hische – Should I Work For Free?
In 2011 Jessica Hisch put together “Should I work for free” a flowchart which helps you decide if you should work on that project for free or not. In short, if the client is not someone you owe big time, you shouldn’t. Jessica is a letterer and was bored of people asking her to work for “free” or for “exposure.”
As well as the flowchart which you can download, Jessica also writes a blog and gives talk on design as well as running an online store where you can purchase prints, cards and her own custom fonts.
Tumblr media
Edoardo Rainoldi – Rooki.design
Rooki.design is the brainchild of Edoardo Rainoldi, a young digital product designer born in Italy but who travelled all around the world to work and study. The site was born from frustration in finding good, free resources for design students. Being a student himself, Edoardo found most articles and interviews online were catered for experienced designers and not those young, creative minds that need the help to start and grow.
All interviews and resources are catered for the young designer demographic and are free of charge.
Tumblr media
Davide Baratta – TypoStories
Typostories is a side project that was created by Davide Baratta, the design lead at Impero. It is a study about typefaces and font pairings and was created from the want to explore diverse typographic solutions while also staying up to date with the newest releases from his favorite independent type foundries. The site offers a study into typefaces and font pairings and features an assortment of typographic illustrations he was inspired to create.
You can currently see Vol.1 and he is working on Vol.2.
Tumblr media
Nicole Saidy – To Inspire About Design
Nicole Saidy is a digital designer from Beirut and wanted to start a side project to help inspire and teach people about design. She does this through her website, with many useful resources to help with designers — both established and newcomers — and also as a speaker and course author.
Her course “become a UI/UX designer” is made for those overwhelmed beginners who want to kickstart their career and has many helpful hints and tips.

How To Make The Most Of #WorkingFromHome
How To Make The Most Of #WorkingFromHome
Creative People

  Lauren Li, Interior Designer
It helps to have a nice area to spend time in, but above all, your working from home set up needs to be practical! We don’t have a lot of space, so I don’t keep things on my desk that I don’t need. I’d recommend grabbing a basket or plastic bag and just fill it with the things that aren’t work-related, and just sort it out later. I do like to have a nice leather mouse pad and some colourful storage accessories (Hay do some great stuff!) on my desk. I also like to burn a candle or use an oil diffuser or have some fresh flowers or foliage, just to keep the spirits up.
Another important element for your working from home setup is to have a comfortable but cute chair, I love the ‘About A Chair’ by Hay. It’s critical to have a desk as the designated space to work, rather than using your laptop on your sofa, or worse your bed! Even setting up on the dining table works, as long as you make sure you’re sitting upright in said comfortable chair.
I also need a good quality set of headphones for the conference calls that we’re taking with our clients and colleagues. When I’m actually trying to get some work done I find it helpful to have some background noise, so the radio or a familiar playlist in the background helps me. Although there is no lack of noise with kids around all the time these days!

Working from home as an illustrator is something I’ve done on and off for many years now – and there is an art to it. I’ve found there are some habits that help to minimise cabin fever and get things done.
Always get dressed in the morning: preferably not in trackies (obviously sometimes you are going to break this rule. Live it up!). The fact is, wearing real clothes brings you a level of dignity that moccasins and polar fleece will simply never be able to. Before I admonished it, I did once do a whole work-from-home winter in the one (matching) tracksuit and I did not, at any point, feel like a real member of society.
If you ditch the tracksuit and uggs, no surprise human contact – analogue or digital – will catch you unawares. I’ve both a) taken a video call with a whole panel and b) answered the door to a sharply-suited Jehova’s witness while dressed in a hoodie and fluffy pink slippers, fresh out of bed. I wish to repeat neither experience.
Also, try to maintain very disciplined work hours: eg 9–6 with a lunch break, then clock off completely at the end. This revolutionised my ability to actually pursue freelance full time. Before setting proper work hours, I’d regularly muck around all week then find myself having to work all night and all weekend – and that just ain’t right… for me anyway.
Alice has a brand new book out, called The Art of Cake! Check out this cute video of Alice talking about the book here, and buy it online here!

Honestly, I think my TEDTalk theme would be “Working from Home” because I have A LOT of opinions about it. I’ve been working from my home office for three years, and in that time I have developed a few rituals essential to my daily routine and productivity.
I split my day into before work, at work, and after work. We all know we shouldn’t be working in pyjamas, I especially know this because by 11am you’ll smell something gross and be shocked to discover it’s actually YOU. You’ll then have a shower and do your hair in the middle of the day and throw your whole day out of whack. So before 9.30am, I get up, make myself look decent and clean, eat breakfast and try and go for a walk.
In the ‘at work’ period of 8 hours I make a list of ACHIEVABLE daily tasks. There’s nothing worse than an overwhelming list! On this list I also put in lunch, my favourite part of the day, and an afternoon walk. Sometimes the walk doesn’t happen but I am more likely to do it if it’s on the list. Never underestimate the power and thrill of being able to cross something off a list. Some days will be super productive, some less so, just like if you were sitting in your work office.
My favourite productivity tools are: Trello for making daily work lists and using time management apps including Focus Keeper and Forest.

Creating blocks of time in your week for specific things (ie meetings, marketing, emails, analytics etc) helps keep you focused on just one task or area at a time. It’s so easy, particularly for people working from home for the first time, to get pulled in a variety of directions – doing Zoom meetings one minute, then responding to emails, then trying to get some marketing done then working on the eCommerce backend etc. This can be exhausting, inefficient and ineffective. When you set boundaries and chunk your work (time blocking), you’re more likely to focus and get real traction happening in that area, then you can move onto the next. Use this free weekly planner to map what a week might look like, then consider which tasks you could “chunk” into time blocks i.e. doing all of your marketing/admin 12-3pm Mondays.
Depending on your personality, working from home can be a paradise or a prison sentence. Regardless of your attitude towards it, having people to turn to can do wonders for mindset and mental health. From sharing funny stories and things that made you smile, through to venting your frustrations or working through problems, having a regular time to chat with friends in a similar boat can help. This may be fellow small biz owner friends, past colleagues or friends in a similar industry. Figure out a frequency (ie weekly) and communication medium (Skype, FaceTime, phone) and create a scheduled time to check in with one another. I have been doing this for years with three of my fave biz friends and it has been invaluable for keeping me motivated, personally and professionally.
Check out Fiona’s offline and online courses for small business owners, over at My Daily Business Coach.

One of the biggest learning curves is learning how much you can do, and how much time it actually takes.
To begin, you’ll probably overestimate how much you can fit into a day – a dangerous mind-frame that even has a name: time-optimism. You’ll need to adjust your expectations and schedule what can and can’t realistically fit into your time.
Also: be self-aware. If you’re easily distracted or get slack, discipline yourself by scheduling your entire day in advance, down to the hour, including breaks. And if you tend to work yourself into the ground … do the same thing! Enforce your breaks in advance. Know when to stop!
