So with how endlessly vast the subject is, what with us flying for more than 100 years as humans, I would suggest most of all to try to dial into the era you most enjoy, and find media that fits that! You’ll find a favorite rabbit hole, even a favorite aircraft, and off to the three AM wiki crawls you go, ehehe!

As for some good general media- I’m a big combat flight simmer, so if that’s your cup of tea, you have some options, depending on how deep you wanna be- for the surface level, “fly planes and blow stuff up” things, Ace Combat is a ton of fun- the setting is deeper than you’d expect, the selection of aircraft is good in the modern examples (I’d suggest emulating or even finding an old PS2 and playing Zero, then 5, 6, 7, but if you can only get ahold of something modern, 7 is great!)

If you’re looking for deeper flight sims, you don’t have a ton of options for modern stuff that is on the light end, but when it comes to full fidelity flight sims, DCS is king. Each “module” is a fully-simulated aircraft, helicopter, etc, and some are better than others- the MiG-21 and F-14 by Heatblur are kind of the gold standard IMO!

There aren’t many good WWII flight sims in the modern age- the modern IL-2 games are expensive and don’t give you much by way of missions, War Thunder is… no. Please, don’t do that to yourself. And DCS HAS some WWII modules, but they’re kinda situational. If you REALLY want some WWII stuff, IL-2 1946 on Steam for ten bucks is older, but the flight dynamics, dynamic campaign generator, AI and mission editor have never been matched IMO.

I don’t have a ton of book suggestions, but! A great show for free on youtube is History Channel’s Dogfights- it’s a series that used 3D animations to recreate historical dogfights, often with the stories told by the pilots themseves when they were still around! It still holds up, and it’s great- Periscope Films on YouTube also has lots of historical promotional films from various designers and training films too, which are fun!

Flight Simulator (2020) takes some getting used to if you're familiar with flying a small aircraft. It's possible, and a lot of the experience is amazingly lifelike! But doing precise movements with the tiny little analog stick, that's annoying. I did manage my first landing with it in EDMS (though don't tell my old flight teacher how it looked; thankfully Straubing has a ridiculously long runway by Cessna 172 standards).

Still, this game will almost immediately have you google for game attachments with a proper yoke, proper controls and so on. And then you'll immediately reject that thought again because that shit is expensive. But how am I supposed to do a backtrack without proper differential toe brakes!?

The thing the game is most lacking is a proper way to trim, or maybe I haven't found it yet. Keeping the plane at roughly 3500 feet flying level at 110 knots should be easy, but no trim wheel and the built-in automatic trim system sure isn't doing anything useful, so you always have to hold the analog stick at just the right angle. Very annoying.

I do like the landscape updates. I've been able to find far more landmark buildings in Germany than I ever expected. Even if the buildings aren't modelled by hand, plenty of bigger sports stadiums and weird-looking hospitals and so on are very recognisable. This isn't really necessary for flying planes, but it is fun.

Anyway, if you're doing experiments with this as well, and are flying in the ED region, you need to take a look at https://aip.dfs.de/. That is the entire AIP (Aeronautical Information Publication) for Germany, for free! Doesn't even take a registration! I know other countries have had this for ages, but here this always used to cost money.

What this means is: All the approach charts for every single German airport, telling you where it is, how to fly there, the exact traffic pattern for landing there (Germany has some famously difficult ones to avoid noise for the areas below; take a look at the south-east corner of Landshut for a good example. You do an S curve final to avoid angering one specific farmer too much).

Go for "AIP VFR", then "AD", then it's sorted alphabetically. "HEL AD" has the helicopter landing areas (mostly hospitals). Note that some data is not up-to-date, though. That's the fault of the game. The AIP is current, but the game isn't. For example, EDKA got a much longer runway a couple of years ago (they finally finished construction during the pandemic), but the game still has the old, incredibly short version.

Anyway, those are just some random notes. I haven't yet decided whether I'll buy any expensive equipment or not, but it is more fun than I expected. Gotta do more landings.

World of tanks and war thunder research

Brief overview 

World of tanks and war thunder are each others only competitors as both of them are the two major titles in the multiplayer vehicle combat genre. There are many differences and similarities between the two but the main similarities are that they are both free and very predatory with their monetization. Some how the two biggest games in this genre are also some of the most hated by their own player base which I find quite amusing.

World of tanks or WoT

War gaming who made world of tanks have made multiple games for military vehicles those being world of tanks, world of planes and world of warships the most popular being world of tanks. The game I’m going to focus on is also world of tanks as I’m making a tank game so the other two games aren’t really relevant. World of tanks is what I want to call an arcade game but it’s not a literal arcade game it’s just not as realistic as most military vehicle games. Despite not being as realistic the tank models and statistics are still based off of real tanks or at the very least tank concepts which are often referred to as paper tanks by the community. World of tanks works off of a HP system similar to my own however it’s a bit more advanced as it takes armour thickness, armour angle and bullet penetration into account where as my game doesn’t. There’s this horrendous feature world of tanks has that tanks are invisible until one of your crew “spot” them which will revile them to you and your team however some tanks have better crew that can spot further which leads to tanks that you can’t see killing you even if you know where the shots are coming from you can’t hit them as the bullets won’t effect an invisible tank. On paper the idea sounds like it’d make it more realistic but it doesn’t it just makes it incredibly frustrating as you can’t do anything about the guy shooting you even if you know you should be able to because you know where they are. If I was wargaming to fix it being so aggravating I would make it so that if someone shoots you they are spotted so you can defend your self. If I was to add something I don’t already have in my game from world of tanks it would be how you can win the games by either killing all the enemy players or by capturing the zone at the enemies side of the map.

War thunder or WT

War thunder is all of the world of games in one you can play naval, air, ground and helicopters in one game. War thunder is also a combined arms game meaning you can play as a plane or helicopter in a tank match or plane in a naval match. War thunder is more focused on realism and has three main game modes realistic battles (RB), Simulator battles (SB) and arcade battles (AB). Realistic battles is the most popular mode as it’s a bridge between the two other modes simulator and arcade it has features of simulator which make it feel more realistic but also has features of arcade to make it easier to control the vehicles. Simulator battles is focused on realism and gives you full control of your vehicle whilst trying to make the mode feel as close to a real battle as possible. Arcade is madness your vehicles move a lot less realistically than in other modes and it tells you where to shoot your enemy which makes it a good mode to start playing with to learn the game. War thunder does HP differently to other games as the vehicles have a full damage model with all the comments of the vehicle in the correct place to its historical counterparts which can be damaged and destroyed to cripple your vehicle. In war thunder you can also repair you vehicle if you aren’t in a plane which is where I got the idea to add a repair mechanic. In my opinion war thunders realistic approach is much better and more fair as you can only be killed by someone that you can also have a chance to kill.
