Indeed, that month Adam Kredo reported in the Washington Free Beacon on these dissidents’ shock at Tabatabai’s appointment. They claimed she had parroted the regime’s position in multiple public appearances, and that her father was part of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s inner circle.

In April 2021, several House members requested a review of Tabatabai’s security clearance. In response, the Biden administration dismissed these claims as “smears and slander”.

Even more astonishingly, Tabatabai runs the office overseeing hostage negotiations. Three weeks after the October 7 pogrom, a reporter asked the White House spokesman, John Kirby, whether it was appropriate for Tabatabai to be in such a position given the claims made against her.  Kirby stalled. Tabatabai is still there.

WASHINGTON ― Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan were released from Russian custody Thursday as part of the biggest prisoner exchange between Washington, Moscow and four other governments since the Cold War.

The exchange of 24 prisoners follows months of negotiations and marks a rare moment of cooperation between Russia and its geopolitical adversaries in the West after more than two years of Russia's war in Ukraine.

The prisoner swap involves the release of 16 individuals previously detained in Russia in exchange for eight individuals held in the U.S., Germany, Norway, Slovenia and Poland.

Turkish intelligence had announced that it agreed to provide logistical support to facilitate the swap.

Flight tracking site Flightradar24 showed a Russian government plane that had been used for a previous prisoner swap involving the United States and Russia had flown from Moscow to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, on the border with Poland and Lithuania, Reuters reported.

In exchange, Germany has agreed to release Russian hitman Vadim Krasikov, who has been jailed in Germany since 2021. The release of Krasikov was the biggest concession to bring Gershkovich, Whelan and others home. Names of the other Russian prisoners involved in the deal were not immediately available.

Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, who was arrested in Russia in 2020, and another journalist, Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian-British dissident, were also released from Russian prisons in the exchange.

In addition, five wrongfully detained German citizens and seven other Russian citizens − each political prisoners in their own country − will be released and allowed to leave Russia.

Families of Gershkovich, Whelan and others gathered at the White House Thursday to learn about the long-awaited release of their loved ones.

Signs of an imminent exchange began emerging Sunday after lawyers and representatives for prisoners reported some of their clients missing from detention centers and prisons throughout Russia.

The U.S. State Department says Russia weaponizes political prisoners, wrongfully detaining them for various reasons. Russia disputes this and either designated them as dangerous extremists or claims they are spies.

In July, Gershkovich was convicted, unusually swiftly, on espionage charges he denies. He was given 16 years in jail. The previous largest prisoner swap with Russia took place in 2010, involving 14 people. Gershkovich was held in Russia for 17 months.

Whelan, a former U.S. Marine, had been imprisoned in Russia since December 2018 on espionage charges his family and the U.S. government have called baseless. The U.S. classified him as wrongfully detained. Whelan was convicted by Russia in 2020 of spying and was sentenced to 16 years in a maximum-security prison colony.

Russia in 2022 traded basketball star Brittney Griner, sentenced to nine years for having cannabis oil vape cartridges in her luggage, for arms dealer Viktor Bout. Bout was serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S.

Of course, strong critical analysis is required to best understand youth media engagement, which is explored in Week 8’s reading → 

In “New Media and Informal Learning” from The Routledge International Handbook of Children, Adolescents, and Media, Rebecca Herr Stephenson describes the relationship between new media and learning through three main frameworks: New Media Literacies, Genres of Participation, and Connected Learning. These frameworks have informed research studies in many disciplines and “...identify technical proficiencies and social practices conducive to successful learning with and through new media” (2021, pp. 467-468). There is a strong emphasis on classifying different types of participation, or literacies, and how they shape young people’s learning and identity-building in the digital age (469). There is also an emphasis on youth organizations and programs that aim to teach these participation skills and help youth navigate unequal educational landscapes (470). As we discussed in class, frameworks are an important method of forming a common consensus about how we talk about children’s media use. They are also critical to understanding how we need to combat barriers to access to ensure that all children develop an understanding of the technologies that will shape their lives. 

While the general Canadian curriculum includes mandatory media education, much of this learning happens outside of traditional classroom contexts. In fact, depending on resources and instructors, it’s arguable that many kids may learn more about new media from their daily Tiktok scroll than a media lesson in school. For this blog post, I want to take a brief look at how “...informal engagement with new media – even when that media is not designed with explicit educational goals in mind – can lead to substantial and valuable learning” (468).

With an average user age of twelve years-old, Roblox players’ engagement with social issues is an unprecedented look into the educational potential of youth-centered new media. Herr Stephenson writes that “Games are opportunities to connect socially, to explore and experiment, develop expertise, and learn to participate with and through media” (471). Activism on Roblox allows kids to learn about social issues that they otherwise may not have exposure to. It also teaches them about the vast potential of new media itself, such as the power of online activism and collective action through the Internet. Finally, this sort of engagement is a valuable form of identity-building for youth; kids’ exploration of social issues within platforms and communities they’re comfortable in allows them to more freely explore their identities and where they situate themselves in the world. It also helps them develop their own values and political stances, independent of their parents. While I explored a more structured, purposeful educational Roblox space for Week 8’s Padlet activity, it’s fascinating to see the different types of learning that comes from such a vibrant platform. I’m genuinely amazed at Roblox’s ability for all kinds of learning, both formal and informal, and how formative it likely is to kids growing up today. 

Of course, there are dangers to youth engagement with new media. While new media provide numerous opportunities for learning and growth, there are equally as many opportunities to learn hate and bigotry, as indicated by the rise of the Alt-Right pipeline.
