Chest rising in falling in quick and angry puffs as you tuned in on the secret you had discovered only a mere night ago. The sounds you had heard upon entering your home. Spotting those all too familiar sneakers by the front door.

Oh, man, you were seething with rage. And hearing those moans, that fragile voice calling out your brother's name. That might’ve been one of the darkest moments in your life. Close behind the videotapes of your father, that has scarred you for life.

And when you entered Nate’s room, you found the one thing that changed your outlook on dating or women. Although Nate was part of the blame, Cassie fell under his spell. She knew half the fucked up shit he’d done in the past, yet, she still followed through on fucking him. She easy. She wasn’t endgame material and you should’ve realized that a while ago.

But that had been the night things changed between you and Cassie. You couldn’t look at her like she was a normal human being. If anything, now, you looked at her like a piece of property- Nate’s property because that was what she was now. It had been the same with Maddy and it was now happening with your girlfriend. 

She broke up with you not long after that night, and she was surprised to find you took it so easily. Thinking that she ended things peacefully with you and carried on with her days. But she should’ve been able to see the dark look in your eyes when she ended things. Although you did love her, she was far too gone to be saved. A piece of property was what she was now. Except, there was one thing you knew about Nate’s property and it was that he didn’t like that property to be touched.

So, here you were, standing in the far corner of the party ensuing around you. Falling Back by Drake blasted in the background as you continued to stare at your ex. Seeing her smile and enjoying her time with your brother. Feeling that guttural rage begin to build and build each moment you watched. The fact that they were happy, genuinely happy with one another was a shot in the back. Not only by your brother but by Cassie as well.

You wanted to set their world on fire. Just the idea of them suffering as you slowly widdle down their psyche was just blissful. Pretty fucked up, but the fact that Cassie had practically moved into your house, you weren’t merciful anymore. Especially now that you and your father spent most of the nights with football on, beers in hand, and hoping that the casters’ voices can block out the moans belonging to Cassie.

No, they didn’t deserve your mercy. They didn’t deserve the side of you that would roll over and accept the reality of the situation. So, when you spotted Lexi in the crowd talking to Kat, a lightbulb ignited in your mind.

Downing the rest of your drink, you made your way across the busy living room and to the kitchen where Lexi was. Entering, you moved past the two girls and to the bottles on the counter. Kat had dismissed herself to pick up Ethan’s call, giving you the chance you needed.

She glanced over, scoffing at the sight of her sister drunk and being with Nate. “She’s going to get her heart broken in no time. After everything he’s done, she still goes to him.” You offered a red solo cup to her, pausing her ranting as she thanked you before she continued. “I mean, how dumb is she?”

Squinting your eyes, you stared at the blonde. “I mean, I dated her, so I can confirm that she is quite dumb. Maybe a few screws loose as well.” Your statement made the girl laugh, enabling a smile to form on your lips.

A lot of your friends didn’t exactly align with your brother as you hung out with drug addicts and the gossip girls of East Highland. Lexi was a part of that group and there was a genuine friendship you had with her. But, if you wanted to get some payback, you would have to twist it in a way that may piss Cassie off. Just the first stab into her heart that might show that this was just the start.

So, with nothing so much as a warning, your arm wrapped around Lexi’s waist and you pulled her into your chest. The squeak that fell from her lips made you smile, tilting your head as you stared down at the girl. “Just play along.”

“Y/n, what are you-” Lexi couldn’t help but stop herself, glancing in her sister’s direction. Finding the blonde watching intently of the position Lexi had found herself in. But the longer she stared at her sister, the longer she found reasons as to why she should listen to you. To get payback. To get revenge.

So, she looked up at you, glancing down at your lips before back up at your eyes. And it was her turn to take you by surprise, taking your breath away with her lips slamming against yours.

The kiss wasn’t what you thought capable from the bookworm. Everything you knew about Lexi was innocence. That and the fact that after a long night of drinking, when Cassie left the room to grab more beer, Lexi had confessed that she was a virgin. Wanting your advice on what may get her past this stage in her life. But feeling this and experiencing it would’ve fooled you if you never were exposed to the vulnerability she had shown.

Lexi’s hands drifted down, moving just past the hem of your jeans and resting over the growing tent. A deep guttural moan was swallowed by the girl, who couldn’t contain the smirk that formed on her lips. The desperate need for air was slowly becoming faded with the need for something more grew.

But it was short-lived by a livid blonde who wasn’t afraid to shove Lexi away and sweep you away. Looking over your shoulder, you gave an apologetic smile to Lexi. She was still trying to recover from the intensity, face red and lips beginning to bruise. It was adorable.

And when you found yourself pushed against a door in a room with no lights on, you couldn’t help but smile in amusement. Finding the amount of anger written on Cassie’s face to be adorable coming from someone who had no right to be this angry.

“Hello, Cass,” you greeted smugly.

“What do you think you’re doing with my sister? Going to use her to get back at me?” Cassie spat.

“Well, it got us alone, didn’t it?” You inquired, making the girl hush. A sigh fell from your lips, shrugging. “We’re just getting to know each other a bit better, you know?”

“Don’t be a fucking asshole. You look like a little pussy doing this. You know that, right?” Cassie said. “I mean, you are acting like a child by trying to have sex with my sister after I broke up with you.”

And some part of you felt horrible doing what you were doing. This wasn’t just to get some sort of moment of euphoric galore. If you wanted that, you would’ve told Cassie to fuck off and just fucked Lexi. At least there, things may have worked out better. But this was a plan that you were making up on the fly. You were scheming to get back at your brother and Cassie.

Once more exorcising spirits or using them like WWX does, doesn't stop them from reincarnation, you all gotta stop this when the only thing that is said is if resurrected WWX doesn't fulfill his "term" HIS primordial soul is forever destroyed based on the usual points of Mo Dao usage that is performed by everyone else that is not Wei Wuxian (i.e. Jin Guangyao, Mo Xuanyu, Xue Yang and Su She).

The nature of this “sacrificial ritual” was a type of curse. The caster was to harm themselves with a weapon, making cuts on their body and using their own blood to draw the array and write the spells within. They would then sit in the center of the circle and give up their mortal body to evil spirits, using the annihilation of their soul as the price to summon a nefarious, malicious ghost. This was all done in order to request the fulfillment of a wish. Thus, it was the opposite of “possession.”

This is the part that I can see confusing others, but, with doaist belief, there are several souls, the human (living one, the three hun and seven po that remain in death). Mo Xunayu did not sacrifice his right of reincarnation just the living one he had at the time, and frankly the one that is cared about in the moment as that is where karma is accrued in order to be judged throughout the circles of Diyu until a soul is purged clean to enter their next reincarnation cycle, samsara. Your karma only follows you based on what you did in your wordly life in consequence and a soul is thusly free to garner further negativity or, better itself to enter the next samsara. When it comes to the Po that stay it can be for any reason, and are liable to rise apart from the "human" as they are only the emotions left at the time of death or, of the "human" daily actions that were strongest. Once the hun souls (these ARE essentially the parts of the person that are essential in spirit and is the primordial existence of that life) are all reunited within Diyu, the human can move on. The Po can still roam the world and why funerary rights and respect are performed and met.

While both were forbidden magics of ill repute, the difference was that the former was much less popular than the latter. After all, few wishes were so strongly desired as to make someone willingly sacrifice everything they had. This was why the technique had been nearly lost after centuries of disuse. The examples recorded in ancient books had only a handful of cases that were backed by reliable evidence, and every single one of them had been for revenge. Every malicious ghost summoned by the ritual had fulfilled the caster’s wishes perfectly, in cruel and bloody ways.

He also did not make anything to do with this ritual or any of the actual mo dao curses (a whole one which we see in book which is the one hundred holes and what it's backlash is for Su Shi using it). What Mo Xuanyu does is also true Mo Dao as it is manipulating the primordial spirit self of another and his human existence. It is a disruption of several Samsara and consequence that will be righted, good or bad for either. Wei Wuxian's cycle just started anew sooner as he was given life again and paid for his karma with his previous death, as reiterated through the novel and himself. Mo Xuanyu has only swapped their places in samsara and death and life.

But the tough thing was, the Sacrificial Ritual followed the will of the caster first and foremost. So it didn’t matter how much he objected… He was already inside this body, which was a silent acknowledgement that both parties had formed a contract. He had to fulfill the wish of the caster, or the curse would rebound, destroying the possessor’s primordial spirit and extinguishing it forever.

Following the rules of karma and Samsara, Mo Xuanyu already gave his place in the human world, he fulfilled his part of the ritual as needed and will eventually reincarnate based on whatever karma he accrued in that life. Wei Wuxian still has to fulfill the wants of that sacrifice before he is free to do as he wants as his primordial humanity is what will be destroyed, the part that always is made to enter Diyu in order to reincarnate.

In all of this, it is not gui dao, as gui dao uses what is already in existence in order to be used with the many Po souls that can arise and still be found in the likes of graves and disturbed places. Po can be disturbed even after years of rest and why you also do not bring negativity into temples, ancestral worship places and areas, or the graves itself. Po being the emotionality left to the world are prone to aggression and can make themselves rise as jiangshi 僵尸, stiff corpse, or as the work calls mutations of them 走尸, zou shi, walking corpse and 凶尸, xiong shi, fierce corpse. None of these retain human characteristics other than the po it relies on that already have existed before Wei Wuxian was present.

I have said this before but I'm expanding on this as it fandom falsely put the onus of this all on Wei Wuxian still for a sacrifice. Or to put the death of Mo Xuanyu, the caster, on Wei Wuxian, who wasn't sure why he had been summoned back to life and was not expecting that. Wei Wuxian had already been dead, nor within that thirteen years he had been, conspired, as what most Mo Dao users do when they break their nascent souls, to eventually revive physically.

In the very first chapter it has already exposed that the moniker of the book is false. The practitioners of Mo Dao are Mo Xuanyu, later Xue Yang, Su She and Jin Guangyao, not Wei Wuxian who we see works in a totally different medium of physical cultivation and meditation that does not warp or manipulate a soul itself to become defiled, the po wandering the human world are not the human soul that are being made into jiangshi. The point of Mo Dao is to corrupt a living soul (the self usually)by evil manipulations.

Wei Wuxian is not, never was, a Mo Dao demonic cultivator, nor was the first as there were centuries of techniques for this, and his crafting of ghosts is falsely defined within the same category. This is also foreshadowed with his argument with Lan Qiren about the exorcism and suppression of ghostly spirits being the only orthodox means of dealing with them, and the lack of understanding orthodox clans approached spirits as a social taboo.

Progg (Monster)

(The flip side of the Mamuta, I simply HAD to do the Smoky Progg. I was a bit conflicted, whether or not to make the progg human sized or whether to maintain the pikmin scale, and I decided I'd keep it Mamuta sized. So this is a tiny undead fey that blights your lands in revenge for wrongdoings! I know PF fey don't technically have souls, but Rise of the Runelords features a ghost dryad and it's basically the foundation of Golarion canon, so.)

Progg are undead created by the sorrow and hatred of small, benevolent fey when killed in an unholy place. They are driven to blight the land they inhabit, killing plants, choking out livestock, and tormenting the peasantry. Progg have a knowledge of who they once were, but only distantly; whatever connections they made and emotions they felt as a fey are diminished to near nothingness. All a progg feels is an insatiable need to destroy life, especially plants. To this end, progg frequently target stores of seeds, flowers in bloom, and young sapling trees- a land blighted by a progg may not only lose this year’s harvest, but all future harvests if no help comes.

Progg, notably, have little desire to harm humanoids; they will defend themselves if threatened, but if there is a suitable target of young plant life to destroy, a progg will often focus its attention on moving there, even if it’s in danger of being destroyed itself. Good-hearted monster hunters know to sanctify such areas, as progg can not see nor enter such a place- although more unscrupulous adventurers may let the progg carry out its destructive mission in exchange for free hits.

Living plant matter treats a progg as though it was corporeal; it is damaged normally from the natural attacks of Plant creatures and weapons made of living wood, and cannot pass through living plants. Any wooden structures or weapons not made of living wood affect the progg normally, however.

Prestige Class Spotlight 14: Daivrat

The relationship between mortals and genie-kind is sometimes quite tense, and often imbalanced, with one ruling over the other, whether it be by physical might or magic. Few places is this more true than Qadira and the greater Kelesh Empire, there powerful conjurers mastered the art of binding genies to their service. Many wonders and structures across the empire owe their creation to genie labor or wishcraft, and many such genies remain in servitude even now, waiting as only an immortal can for the day when the culture changes and they and their kin will be freed, either to go on their merry way, or to exact their revenge.

But not every spellcaster in the land is a genie binder, nor do they necessarily view the elemental beings as potential or current slaves. Indeed, the Daivrat, a word that roughly translates as “genie-friend”, are quite the opposite, viewing genies as equals, trusted advisors, and comrades.

Such mages offer to help the lot of genie-kind, be they slave or free, and can expect to gain willing favors from such beings in kind, even from the most vicious and domineering varieties.

While none would choose to control genies as their counterparts would, daivrats are in a position to bargain fairly with genies that they either encounter or call upon with magic, and if there’s anyone that a genie would look for loopholes in their contract for or offer wishes genuinely without twisting them, it would be to a daivrat that has proven true and good as their word.

So let’s take a look at them!

The requirements for this prestige class include third-tier magic, focus on conjuration, and a greater mastery of certain lore (thereby making in available at around the same time for both full and mid casters), as well as knowledge of the four elemental languages and peaceful contact with a genie, making this a decent option for most casters outside of minor ones.

Naturally, they also progress with their mastery of their magic for all but the first level.

Each daivrat also specializes in either an element or elemental damage type, making appropriate spells harder to resist. Naturally, this later improves.

With their reputation and familiarity with genie customs, these mages are quite adept at both identifying and endearing themselves to genies of all stripes.

These mages gain the service of minor incorporeal genies they can call upon to retrieve spell information during their daily preparations, giving them access to a spell they would not normally have access to, even from outside their normal spell list or casting tradition. However, the unfamiliarity of these spells means they require greater magical energy to cast, less so if it was a spell that they could theoretically have learned on their own.

Their reputation with genies also bolsters them when they summon or call genies, making summons last longer and it easier to bargain with them.

They also gain a ward against an elemental damage type from their study of the elements.

Powerful daivrats earn the service of a lesser zhyen genie, which serves as their familiar.

The most powerful of these mages become so infused with elemental energies that they become partially genie-like themselves, gaining elemental resistances and a tougher body.

If you want to play a mage that works with genies, but really don’t want to deal with the controlling aspects of being a genie binder, this prestige class may be for you. Gaining buffs to the DCs of your favorite element, as well as being able to get an extra spell from any source each day is fun, as is the elemental resistances. However, the core of the class is in the buffs they gain to diplomacy and negotiation with genies, so only consider this prestige class if you know the game will have lots of opportunities to interact with them. Additionally, consider how different classes interact here. Divine casters might be even friendlier with genies due to having planar ally instead of planar binding, while a more martial caster might use the class to add spells beyond their combat-focused list to their arsenal each day, as well as fight alongside genies and elementals directly. Also, if you’re not also diving into the genie binder, consider picking up the summon genie spells from People of the Sands.

The flavor of this prestige class implies that the character is at least on good terms with genies, and that lends itself to a lot of good story beats like genies, including efreeti, asking the character for aid. As a GM, you should consider how to fit such things into the story, and also when they would be disruptive to the plot you are trying to tell.

Ever since learning of the existence of planes beyond the material and fey realms, Kersta of Bloomwood has been eager to learn as much about these new friends as possible, which led to her studying conjuration magic and later the art of befriending elementals and genies. For their part, most genies are amused by the flighty and adorable gathlain, and are usually willing to aid her.

One normally doesn’t think of genies when thinking of Bolgara Marsh, but rumor has it that it was once host to great elemental power. Finding these sunken ruins won’t be easy, but if the native vodyanoy are treated respectfully, they might be convinced to show the way. It's…his… blood…,” Ragnar said through shuddering breaths. Nicolas was looming over him and all Ragnar could think of was that he was now under the headsman’s ax. Nicolas took a minute to process that piece of information and was frustrated. Why doesn't anyone ever give him a straight answer? He was stonewalled when he used reason and here he was, stonewalled again, when he had acted on a violent impulse. 

Nicolas stood to his full height and the band of light in his hand pulsed outward. Ragnar screamed again as he watched the light pass over and through him. Suddenly, Nicolas knew what the light pulse did and he laughed. It was a deep, long belly laugh. The involuntary action shattered whatever remnant of fight that remained to Ragnar. A dark stain spread across the lower part of his cloak.

Holding up his left hand to show the colorless light to the terrorized priest he asked in between laughs, “Do you know what this is?”

It was a monumental effort for Ragnar, but he managed to barely shake his head. 

“Animadverte. Marking of the Soul. Astral magic is intensive on the casters' mana for two reasons. One, it requires a ritual to be performed in order to map out the target's soul. The other reason is having to overcome the target's soul defenses.” Nicolas looked at the light, mesmerized. 

“This spell takes the first part of that problem and negates it almost completely. This was something that was only ever even theorized. With the mana consumption alone, I should be dead from casting it so many times, and yet here I am using it as a torch. I've ripped away the left arm of your soul, Ragnar, and it was consumed. It's gone. Forever. There is no growing it back.” 

At that, a pulse of light passed through the cowering man. His soul was marked once again. Nicolas pushed through the astral plane, using the power of Animadverte to guide himself. With an understanding of the spell structure, Nicolas realized just how crudely he had used it. He saw the look on Ragnar's face the moment he closed the hand on the first finger of Ragnar's remaining hand. 

“You've got one more chance before I start taking chunks,” Nicolas said. Some part deep within him wanted to do it, to rip and tear Ragnar apart, to go and rip everyone apart. In the darkest depths of his labyrinth of a soul, The Voice stirred. The violent impulse intensified. The only reason he didn't act on it was his wanting of answers. Answers he might be able to get out of someone else. 

“P-p-p…” Ragnar stuttered. 

“Use your big boy words, Priest,” Nicolas said, icy coldness swept through every syllable. He tightened his grip on Ragnar's soul and began to pu-

“PACT! PACT! PACT!” Ragnar shouted the words. A sickly purple light radiated off Ragnar's upper chest, as he threw himself into the floor. 

Nicolas knew very little about Pact and Sealing magic. It was the only discipline of magic that required the use of crystals as an external mana source. Due to this, it it's utilized primarily in the security of information. 

Glyphs will always follow three simple rules, regardless of their complexity. The first is the same rule that applies to all magic theory. Simple does not mean easy. The strength of the seal is relative to the mana infused within it, not the seal lines themselves. Finally, do not attempt to break a seal without adequate knowledge of who, what, and why. Who created it? What is it sealing? Why would this need to be sealed or unsealed?

A relatively good thing about seals is that they won't kill those who break a pact. It will make those who break them wish it did though. Nicolas thought on the last bit of information. 

“Who, what, and why?” He asked out loud. The intensity of the purple hue was dimming. It was at a snail's pace, but it was dimming. Nicolas was starting to pace, the purple light of Ragnar's Pact Seal faded into darkness, the only light in the room was from Nicolas's spell. 

“You're a priest of, uh, something. You're wearing the symbol of The Brood,” Nicolas said. The only sounds in the room were his boots scraping the rocky ground and Ragnar's whimpers. “Show me the seal again.” Ragnar hesitated, but complied. 

The seal itself was about the size of Nicolas's hand. It looked like it had been carved directly into his skin and left a scar. Surprisingly, none of the scar tissue felt raised. It was two circles, one was smaller and inside the other. At the very top of the inner circle was a triangle, equal on all sides, stretching down until it was spitting the circle into equal halves. At what would be the center of both our circles, was the tip of the second triangle as it copied the same pattern. Inside the ring created by the two circles were fuzzy symbols that Nicolas couldn't make out. He let out a slow whistle. Simple does not mean easy.

“I don't even understand how they even made this. There's no marks from an etching tool, it's not burned on, nor tattooed. It's not even ink. There's nothing you can tell me?” Nicolas asked, caught between a feeling of frustration and excitement. It's not on the skin, maybe the muscle or bone?

“I… I can't. It goes against..” Ragnar said, pointing at his chest. This was the first time he had spoken in a while. Nicolas watched as the light grew in intensity again, but stopped and slowly died down. 

The old man looked ancient now, his wrinkly skin was torn up and down his only working arm. He looked like shit. 

Ragnar took a breath in and steeled himself before saying, “He's testing you.” The purple light grew but fizzled out a second later. 

“So he is involved with the whatever-the-fuck blood that was in the chalice?” Nicolas asked. Frustration was steadily winning in the race against his excitement. He felt an urge to send the pulse out again. Ragnar said nothing. Nicolas let the urge win. The Animadverte Spell swept across the entirety of the room. 

That's when Nicolas noted two big things. There were no scars to be felt from Ragnar's seal because it wasn't carved into the skin. If Nicolas hadn't been touching it, he doubted he'd even believe what he was seeing. He couldn't make out the letters because they weren't on the material plane, they were on the astral. Ragnar's seal was carved directly into the man's soul. That's when the other thing happened. 

“Greetings, child. It's time we talked.” The Voice said.

A reason why I was reserved about my Arcane powers is that the blood curse bound me. Because of it, I was highly vulnerable to blood magic. Blood mages cast psychological spells often on me, and it drove me crazy like a mad demon. Now that my curse has gone after I killed P, my murderer, I am now free of all restraints related to the curse.

I used this chance to bond more with my Arcane prowess. Luckily, my buddy and disciple Alderman was the head of the prestigious Heddwich Arcane Academy in Pangaxylia, another realm. My insights and the academy’s activities tremendously improved the speed by which Arcane knowledge developed, eventually closing into becoming a pseudoscience.

A crucial aspect of the arcane is the mind of its caster. A spell might produce a highly unpredictable effect if the caster was not in their right mind. There are countless times a small spell I cast turned out to be entirely different when my mind was not right.

When this girl came to my office here on Earth asking me to help her with her Arcane Impotency, I was intrigued to help her. After all, this is the very first time Alderman asked me to help in such a case. He would usually patronise me and do everything from his end, so I’m glad he finally treats me like friends we are and ask me to help him.

However, Elsa’s magic attacks weaken if she is angry in any form. She had to control her temper when facing her family’s murderer to exact her revenge. Master Alderman was lost trying to find an alternative for her cause, so he recommended her to see me.

“Purging your emotion is essentially killing your soul while leaving the body intact,” I told her such a horrifying answer when she begged me to purge her of human emotions. “After all, such emotions were why you wanted to put Wusari in her place. If we purge it, not only would you become vegetative, you would lose Arcane, and you would lose your intents. It's killing you inside in a literal sense.”

“So what should I do?”

I demonstrated a fireball spell. It was a small fireball. But once it touched Elsa, a blaze of fire surrounded her—yet it kept a safe distance, so she was not set ablaze.

After the blaze of fire ceased, I gave her the insight I believe she will come to understand later. “Control it. There is always a time and place for everything. Putting your emotion at the right time and situation will incredibly give you an advantage. Don't suppress your feelings. Allow them to go wild but make the time and place for everything. Give your emotions a chance rather than letting them be in a heated conflict within you, and only then would your Arcane benefit from tranquillity.”

Once the hun souls (these ARE essentially the parts of the person that are essential in spirit and is the primordial existence of that life) are all reunited within Diyu, the human can move on. The Pocan still roam the world and why funerary rights and respect are performed and met.

While both were forbidden magics of ill repute, the difference was that the former was much less popular than the latter. After all, few wishes were so strongly desired as to make someone willingly sacrifice everything they had. This was why the technique had been nearly lost after centuries of disuse. But the tough thing was, the Sacrificial Ritual followed the will of the caster first and foremost. So it didn’t matter how much he objected… He was already inside this body, which was a silent acknowledgement that both parties had formed a contract. He had to fulfill the wish of the caster, or the curse would rebound, destroying the possessor’s primordial spirit and extinguishing it forever.

In all of this, it is not gui dao, as gui dao uses what is already in existence in order to be used with the many Po souls that can arise and still be found in the likes of graves and disturbed places. Po can be disturbed even after years of rest and why you also do not bring negativity into temples, ancestral worship places and areas, or the graves itself. Po being the emotionality left to the world are prone to aggression and can make themselves rise as jiangshi 僵尸, stiff corpse, or as the work calls mutations of them 走尸, zou shi, walking corpse and 凶尸, xiong shi, fierce corpse. None of these retain human characteristics other than the po it relies on that already have existed before Wei Wuxian was present.
