Campus E+E Celebrates Return to In-Person Events, Annual Celebración de Independencias

After a more than a year hiatus from hosting in-person events, Campus Events+Entertainment’s MACC organization is gearing up for its annual Celebración de Independencias this Thursday. In conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month, this special occasion commemorates the independence of nine Latin American countries.

“Now that we are back in person, I can help new students feel comfortable and find their community. When I came to UT, it was a culture shock. Then I got plugged in with E+E and found my place on campus,” said Committee Chair Suly Ramirez-Hernandez, a junior health promotion and health and society major from Dallas, Texas.

With a return to in-person activities, Ramirez-Hernandez says many students are seeking out E+E, the largest event-planning organization, to find their niche. Her committee, which now goes by MACC, instead of the full former name Mexican American Culture Committee, to be more inclusive of all Latin American cultures, grew from about 10 members in 2019 to 30+ this year. Ramirez-Hernandez says many of them are sophomores “trying to make up for lost time.”

“It’s easier to join a cultural committee where people share that identity with you. It’s important to bring people together under a united heritage,” she added.

All Longhorns are invited to experience these diverse countries and cultures through free food, music and trivia games at Thursday’s event, 6-8 p.m., in the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center Ballroom. And don’t miss the group’s eight other events this academic year, including campus favorites: Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1), Bailando (Feb. 13) and Flor Festival (April 17). Planning these events is a fun, team effort that helps students learn many marketable skills.

“Together, these Longhorns develop the concepts for each of their events and then execute every detail keeping the committee’s purpose in mind. They are able to celebrate diverse cultures while growing their event-planning, leadership and teamwork skills,” said committee advisor Lisa Kappil.

Pirate City is a unique place because of the proximity between the work-out fields and the fans. It’s also a place in which you can ���feel” baseball history while you watch the beginnings of another new year of baseball.

The Pittsburgh Pirates' Spring Training ballpark and minor league complex in Bradenton, Fla., has been home to the Prates since 1969.

The two complexes underwent $20 million in renovations as part of the team's new 30-year lease with the city before the start of the 2008 Spring Training season.

The upgrades included lights and a new visitor's clubhouse at LECOM Park and new offices, dormitories, renovations to the minor league clubhouse and a fifth practice field at the Pirate City minor league complex.

The same publication has previously recognized The Friendly City's ballfield as "Best of the Ballparks" in the Grapefruit League. LECOM Park has held the top spot among Florida Spring Training destinations since 2016.The baseball facilities at LECOM Park include two full grass fields professionally maintained year-round. Four bullpen mounds, a standalone multi-tunnel batting cage structure, home and visiting locker rooms, and an umpires' changing area provides ample space for a wide array of baseball activities. Competing with Amazon Go

Trigo makes Amazon-Go-like systems for supermarkets and retailers - they use computer vision, 3D mapping, loads of machine learning etc, and it means supermarkets can get rid of their checkouts. They raised some money and the interesting bit of the press release is probably this:

“Trigo's system allows shoppers to personalize their in-store experience by giving them the option upon arriving at the store to either "opt in" by identifying themselves via a loyalty program, effectively allowing the retailer to gain insights on their purchases; or "opt out" by choosing not to check-in and having an "unidentified experience". Shoppers will still enjoy the same benefits of the checkout-free experience either way.”

Elsewhere in checkoutless stores and smart grocery, smart shopping trolley co Caper has also raised more money and says it “is planning to work with sizable North American grocery chains and roll out more than 1,000 Caper carts over the next year”.

Also, Caper “has increased basket sizes by 10% and obtained high customer satisfaction ratings among its users”. That’s interesting because Amazon Go basket sizes are smaller than the average convenience store.

Other startups in the space include Zippin, Grabango, and Standard Cognition.

One in every five contactless payments will be blocked due to new rules - the new “Strong Customer Authentication” European financial regulation means cardholders will have to re-authenticate their cards in a cash machine every so often if they want to keep making contactless payments. But these measures won’t affect payments made via Apple Pay or Google Pay because they already have a second security factor: a face or fingerprint credential.

Future of work

The Uber law: California passed a law that would give employment rights to many workers in the gig economy. Uber say that oh no that won’t apply to them.

The Next Hot Job: Pretending to Be a Robot - ie remote-piloting things that look as if they’re autonomous.

BEIS committee MPs say that the UK doesn’t have enough robots: “The real danger for the UK economy and for future jobs growth is not that we have too many robots in the workplace but that we have too few.” 

Big Tech regulation

There are a lot of stories in this newsletter about the Big Tech companies. Obviously they do big and impactful things, but it’s also partly that since the early 2000s they’ve better understood that as technology lowers the barriers to entry they’re at risk of new, nimbler competition. So they need to create new barriers by innovating lots, buying companies, pursuing customer growth instead of profit, trying mad ideas and so on (all of which is good newsletter material). They’ve done it so successfully that eventually, it looks like the market isn’t very effective at providing competition and curbing excesses. 

That’s usually when regulators start looking. Fifty US attorneys general have signed on to an antitrust investigation into Google. They’ll be looking at the search and advertising business (initially?). Congress’s House Judiciary Committee is demanding internal documents from Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple and has asked other companies whether they have complaints about big tech. The FTC and the Dept of Justice in the US are looking at the big four, as is the EU.

Politics and data: weaponising GOV.UK?

“Cabinet Office to turn [GOV.UK] into a platform for ‘targeted and personalised information’ to be gathered in the run-up to Brexit”. 

UK watchdog eyeing PM Boris Johnson’s Facebook ads data grab - Facebook micro-targeting continues apace. The Information Commissioner’s Office: “This is something we are aware of and we are making enquiries”.

Other news

Local surveillance for your neighbourhood: “if a burglar strikes, they can check and see which cars were spotted in the area around the time of the crime, and pass that footage on to police”. But also “private citizens are unlikely to receive the same training, or be subject to the same oversight, as public employees. A neighborhood administrator could easily search local Flock records to track a spouse’s whereabouts.”

Measuring distance in battery life: "People no longer think about their destination being 10 km away or 10 stops on the tube. They think about it being 50 per cent of their battery away".

“Curve is a banking app that allows you to collate all of your bank cards onto one smart card. Think a wallet which is not a wallet, but is also kept in your wallet.” - the FT isn’t impressed with Curve’s lack of financial disclosure in its recent, very successful, crowdfunding.

Neobank Monzo now has 3m customers.

Walt Disney Studios Announces Film Schedule

The Walt Disney Studios has unveiled its upcoming slate following the recent acquisition of the Fox film studios, including changes to previously dated films and a number of major additions.

After kicking off with the record-setting success of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame, The Walt Disney Studios’ 2019 summer slate includes Disney’s Aladdin on May 24, Fox’s Dark Phoenix on June 7, Pixar’s Toy Story 4 on June 21, Fox’s Stuber on July 12, and Disney’s The Lion King on July 19. Fox 2000’s The Art of Racing in the Rain moves up to Aug. 9, and Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not will release on Aug. 23, while three films move to later dates: Ad Astra (9/20/19), The New Mutants (4/3/20), and Artemis Fowl (5/29/20).

The Studios’ 2019 slate rounds out with Fox’s The Woman in the Window on Oct. 4 and Ford V. Ferrari on Nov. 15, Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil on Oct. 18 and Disney Animation’s Frozen 2 on Nov. 22, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on Dec. 20, and Blue Sky Studios’ Spies in Disguise, moving from September to Christmas. Among early 2020 titles are Fox’sUnderwater on Jan. 10, a new Kingsman movie on Feb. 14, and Call of the Wild on Feb. 21, followed by Pixar’s Onward on March 6 and Disney’s Mulan on March 27.

The updated calendar also sets release dates for major franchises Avatar and Star Wars. With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker bringing the original Skywalker Saga to its conclusion, three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022. Four forthcoming Avatar films, expanding the vibrant world of Pandora, will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2021. In the holiday corridor for 2020, Fox’s West Side Story adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, will debut Dec. 18 in the pre-Christmas slot, with Disney’s Cruella opening Wednesday, Dec. 23, for the long holiday weekend.
