Listed: Infinite River
Tumblr media
Photo: Doug Coombe
Infinite River is what happens when four veterans of the Detroit underground find themselves with a little extra time on their hands. Coming together during pandemic times, Gretchen Gonzales Davidson (Slumber Party, Universal Indians), Joey Mazzola (Sponge, Detroit Cobras), Warn Defever (His Name Is Alive) and Steve Nistor (Sparks, Daniel Lanois) let the music start to flow, using guitar, harmonium, tanpura and percussion to create a sound that’s equal parts arcing, droning and shimmering. “Their brand of drift is especially soothing and sublime,” Bryon Hayes wrote of their debut album Prequel, calling it “the perfect prescription for the current zeitgeist.” And the good news about that is: with at least two more full-lengths on the way (Space Mirror is due next, on August 18th), there’s enough to go around for everyone.
Speaking of spreading the love, guitarist Gonzales Davidson does some of that below with a list of some of her favorite music, much of which you’re sure to hear traces of in Infinite River’s sound.
Funkadelic — Maggot Brain
youtube
Funkadelic’s first few are just mind-blowing but this one… this one with the opening monologue and then that sundown-on-an-eclipsing-universe guitar solo. Just… damn.
Seventh Sons — 4am at Frank’s
youtube
I could put many ESP releases on this list: Godz 2, Albert Ayler’s Spiritual Unity, Cromagnon…. all make the world we drive through a little more chaotic and knowing. But Seventh Sons…this record shatters so many music genres in a true celebration of life. It is a crazy record. It is a perfect record.
The Flaming Lips — American Head
youtube
I have loved the Flaming Lips for a long, long time and admire their ability to keep releasing incredible music after all these years. This newest one is full of beautifully catchy melodies wrapped up in what seems to be dark, autobiographical subject matter… there is some heartbreaking stuff on here. And yet the music rises above and provides an epic experience.
Can — Tago Mago
youtube
Nothing much to say about perfection. Tago Mago is perfection. How the hell did anyone ever create something of this beauty? Just the first few tracks alone…those drums on “Paperhouse” — those drums that define Krautrock– FUUHHHHHKKKK — and then going right into “Mushroom”… taking off to Venus with a beat that is almost impossible to define. I love putting Tago Mago on the car stereo when trekking through the desert, watching the world around me turn alien.
The Dead C — The White House
youtube
How can I say it more clearly: yes, this is the album from Dead C that brought all of their weirdness together beautifully however, anything Michael Morley touches… one of the main Dead C members… is worth a deep gander. His new record, in the guise of the band Gate… is brilliant as well. I remember when Universal Indians opened for the Dead C in Detroit, and thinking — life could not get better. Galen, Aaron Dilloway’s band, was also opening, and it was so funny because Justin Allen, another Galen member, was grounded that night so they had to play without him. Anyway, The Dead C has been one of my favorites since the 1990s.
Simon Finn — Pass the Distance
youtube
The ultimate in stream-of-consciousness freaky folk music, Simon Finn’s Pass The Distance is a beautiful train ride through an enhanced artistic mind.
And a couple songs to consider for your listening pleasure…
Loren Mazzacane Connors — “Haunted House”
youtube
LMC has crafted such a unique guitar style, that he is sometimes overlooked in the grander discussion of life-after-John-Fahey. But don’t let that stop you from digging into his genius. “Haunted House” is his dark, sultry beautiful version of the blues… oh damn that slide guitar and his whispered vocals. Gives me chills every time.
Dino Valente — “Children of the Sun”
youtube
The rough life of Dino Valente, the original singer for Quicksilver Messenger Service who was thrown in jail for pot possession (oh sorry…FLOWER possession…should use the new lingo) right as the band was taking off. He would end up getting released and playing with them again. But it is his solo record that I love the most… with the songs of tough knowledge bleeding everywhere. This song is devastating. How does he produce an operatic tragedy in the confines of a song with just a guitar and vocals? WE ARE ALL CHILDREN OF THE SUN!
William Onyeabor — “Atomic Bomb”
youtube
I love the crazed funk that William lays down. “Body and Soul” is another great track of his… worth listening to… but “Atomic Bomb” — what the HELL is that sound he is putting together? It is not of this time… yet not of the time it came from. Did Randy Newman get sucked into an effects pedal? How much acid is in the water in Onyeabor’s Nigerian homeland? I mean… how did he make this groovy sound? I listen to it… I take it in… I love it… I get down… wayyyyyy down… and I have no idea how it exists.

Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Time to watch one of James Dean’s last films. He died a month before this was released.
Tumblr media
The above scene was completely improvised by James Dean. He told the cameras to roll and said, “Just want to try something.” They kept it for the opening credits.

"If I had one day when I didn't have to be all confused and I didn't have to feel that I was ashamed of everything. If I felt that I belonged someplace. You know?”

Why is “the new kid” trope ever something to pick on? I always found the new kid to be the most exciting. There’s always possibility with a new kid.

Buzz Gunderson: You know something? I like you. Jim Stark: Why do we do this? Buzz Gunderson: You've gotta do something. Don't you?

God, how terrifying. Poor Buzz. He was a bit of a bully, but he didn’t deserve that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is this child more honorable than his parents?! They want a good kid, but they won’t let the kid be a good kid. They’re awful.
“Jim who? I’VE NEVER HEARD OF YOU!” Hangs up. Seriously? Like, so what? Who cares if you’ve never heard of him. Could be a new friend from school. What a dickhead.

Fun fact: The pool in this film was first used for Sunset Boulevard.

Film: Rebel Without a Cause
“Rebel Without a Cause“, ein Klassiker, der seine Längen und Lücken hat.
INHALT: Jim (James Dean) ist ein Außenseiter, der nichts weiter will, als dazuzugehören. In der Schule wird er ständig gemobbt, doch statt dem Problem entgegen zu treten, ziehen seine Eltern lieber mit ihm in eine andere Stadt. Diesmal will Jim alles anders machen und lässt sich zu einem gefährlichen Autorennen mit der…

Heavy-Duty Trucks Play Crucial Role in Growing E-Commerce
Tumblr media
Experienced entrepreneur Frank Mazzola began his career in the financial services industry. He was employed by several Wall Street investment banks before he established his own investment firm. Later, Frank Mazzola shifted to real estate, particularly in industrial outdoor storage. Among many other business interests, he serves as president of Fleet Parking Solutions LLC, a fleet parking provider in Hasbrouck Heights Borough, New Jersey, that serves all sizes of fleet vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks.
The U.S. Department of Transportation classifies large trucks based on gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR). Heavy-duty trucks are vehicles with GVWRs that exceed 26,001 pounds. Among the other vehicles classified as heavy-duty trucks are buses, cement mixers, dry vans, mobile cranes, refuse trucks, and tractors that pull refrigerated trailers.
Heavy-duty trucks have played a critical role in transporting consumer products as e-commerce experienced sudden growth during the COVID pandemic. The health crisis has changed the behavior of consumers worldwide. Consumers have turned to digital shopping, which subsequently increased the demand for e-commerce delivery. The World Economic Forum has reported that in 2020, there was an increase of 25 percent in e-commerce deliveries. It is expected that from 10 to 20 percent of this growth will remain beyond the pandemic.
According to the American Trucking Association, nearly 72 percent of all movements of consumer products in the US were carried out by heavy-duty trucks. The Global Market Insights Inc. added that the market for new heavy-duty trucks will hit $450 billion by 2027.

Demon Seed (Donald Cammell, 1977) Cast: Julie Christie, Fritz Weaver, Gerrit Graham, Barry Kroeger, Lisa Lu, Larry J. Blake, John O'Leary, Alfred Dennis, Davis Roberts, Patricia Wilson, Dana Laurita. Screenplay: Robert Jaffe, Roger O. Hirson, based on a novel by Dean R. Koontz. Cinematography: Bill Butler. Production design: Edward C. Carfagno. Film editing: Frank Mazzola. Music: Jerry Fielding. I'm still more afraid of insufficient human intelligence than of artificial computer intelligence, but I appreciate the prophetic quality of Demon Seed, a film that finds itself resurfacing today amid our uneasiness about social media and the invasion of privacy. Whenever I address my Echo Dot as "Alexa," I will be reminded of Julie Christie's Susan trying out voice commands on her wired house, which has turned from a servant into a jailer and rapist. The movie, unfortunately, looks a little cheesy today -- the cinematography is occasionally murky and the set-ups cluttered -- and it lacks a leavening sense of humor, which often makes horror sci-fi more fun and frightening. I question the waste of an actor of Julie Christie's caliber in a role that's mostly a passive woman-in-jeopardy cliché. And for that matter, why is the only woman scientist in the film Chinese? Are we stuck in the "sinister Oriental" mode here? There's a lot of muddle and loose ends in the plotting: What's the point, for example, of Susan's work as a therapist for a young girl, other than to use the kid as a bit of leverage that Proteus can wield in his torture of Susan? And why do we learn so late in the film that Susan and Alex lost a child, who died of leukemia, some time after we are told that one of Proteus's first achievements was a cure for leukemia? Still, Demon Seed holds its place as an unsettling view of the future that has become our present.

Transportation and Logistics Systems, Inc. Stock Jumps 300%; Revenues Spike Toward $30 Million Annually
Transportation and Logistics Systems, Inc. (OTC: TLSS) stock is in rally mode with shares trading higher by more than 300% since last week. Investors are embracing the company's recently published (unaudited) financial results that show a yearly revenue run rate approaching $30 million. Also, the company announced last month that they are again expanding its operations by acquiring the assets of GRC Trucking, Inc. That deal will leverage GRC's more than 30 years of experience to TLSS and add additional depth to the company's already diversified services platform. Also, the company announced that it has taken several immediate steps to address and seize upon the heightened logistical demands of its eCommerce partners, and the general public, as a result of the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Explicitly, Frank Mazzola, Chief Operating Officer of PrimeEFS and ShypDirect, TLSS' primary delivery brands, stated, "TLSS is partnering with its customers, which includes some of the leading eCommerce companies in the world, to enable them to fulfill their delivery commitments and ensure people have the vital supplies they need during this crisis. He added, "To meet the increased demand, we are hiring more drivers and adding new routes in our seven states of operation as more and more people are being asked to stay in their homes."
Before the demands from the global pandemic, the e-commerce market is expected to become a more than $4.8 trillion economy by the year 2021. And, while investors focus toward the large-cap players in the sector may have been prudent just two months ago, the demands created by this spreading virus have created substantial opportunities to logistical services players like TLSS.
Expanding Services To Fill Burgeoning Demand
Transportation and Logistics Systems, Inc. is already in growth mode. Unlike many small-cap logistics companies, TLSS is a revenue-generating company that posted more than $18 million in income in 2018 and is projecting a sharp rise in the coming quarters. And, that was before the current health crisis that has made online purchasing and delivering a critical component of general commerce. Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) is proof that the demand is substantial and is real.
TLSS also noted that in cooperation with its eCommerce partners and to ensure its ability to handle the heightened demand, the company has increased the hourly wage for all of our drivers by $2.00 per hour. The temporary initiative is intended to support and reward its logistics team for their dedication and commitment to ensuring timely delivery of essential products and services for both its customers and the end-user. TLSS reiterated that during these trying times, its clients can count on the company to be a responsive partner to maintain the consistent flow of goods to the general public.
Logistics In Demand
In 2019, CNBC reported that Bank of America expected a more than $1.4 trillion B2B e-commerce market by the year 2021. At that time, most investors paid attention only to the e-retail side of the equation. E-retail giants such as Amazon, eBay, Walmart (NYSE: WMT), and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) were the apparent beneficiaries of the exploding market, and their stocks responded accordingly by sending valuations to near all-time highs in 2019.
However, as these global leaders have seen share price valuations deflate as the Coronavirus continues to spread, the companies that lean toward fulfillment are not getting hit as hard. And, they shouldn't, especially with the cost of business declining due to depressed oil presses and the sharp increase in delivery demand.
In other words, investors, without disregarding the enormity of the current health crisis, are focusing more on the companies that are essential to completing the logistics processes to help curb the spread of the virus. Why? Because unlike manufacturing and distribution companies that are feeling the pressures of declining demand for some products, other logistics channel providers offer a valuable service that is experiencing heightened demand.
Thus, finding the opportunities that are an integral part of the logistics process makes sense. It makes even more sense to find the companies that offer substantial valuation propositions. Transportation and Logistics Systems, Inc. may fit that scenario well.
A Broad Suite of Logistics Systems
Transportation and Logistics Systems, Inc. (TLSS) brings much to the table in terms of having the ability and resources to become a significant provider of services to the e-commerce sector. Already a revenue-producing company that is expecting to report more than a 100% increase in revenue compared to 2018 results, TLSS has assembled a diversified suite of services that can help to expedite shareholder value and grow into a more suitable market cap valuation. Before the planned GRC acquisition, services already included "at home" delivery, last-mile delivery, and mid-mile transport services. Each of these logistics offerings provides necessary components for completing any e-retail transaction. Moreover, TLSS provides line-haul transport, which serves as a connection between manufacturers, distributors, and hub-to-hub outlets. The GRC asset purchases extend those capabilities.
Here's where the importance of TLSS gets more pronounced. Whether the first step of the distribution process begins by air or sea, the final stage of the e-retail transaction will require a land-based logistics partner roughly 90% of the time. And, TLSS is already well-positioned in that capacity.
TLSS, as an example, has actively proven itself to demand hungry clients by creating processes that meet or exceed consumer and client demands by integrating faster delivery times, offering specialty services, and integrating advanced tracking systems that include the use of telematic devices and synchronization to clients' networks and software. In other words, TLSS is providing its clients with a suite of services that are often overlooked by the final recipient. But, its clients have not.
However, despite the services appearing common to any transaction loop, not all transportation companies offer a competitive set of logistics and transportation options that are comparable to TLSS. And, it's those distinctions that expose opportunity.
Coronavirus Adds To Delivery Demand and Expectations
One of TLSS's subsidiary companies, PrimeEFS, is already positioned to assist e-retailers to quickly respond to consumer expectations. In fact, just as 5-day delivery has become somewhat of an outdated expectation to consumers, PrimeEFS is building its reputation by meeting and exceeding market demands. Consumers need products "tomorrow."
To that end, TLSS's subsidiary, PrimeEFS, has an established e-commerce logistics platform in place that provides line-haul, mid-mile, and last-mile services. The company is also positioned to maintain its presence in the fulfillment loop by extending its end-to-end solutions from distribution centers or manufacturer's docks to consumer doorsteps.
PrimeEFS is led by an experienced management team that brings decades worth of logistics experience to run operations and manage key client relationships. Their implementation of a 24/7 Network Operating Center (NOC) integrates with their clients' tracking and update systems that facilitate seamless delivery and transaction details to both the drivers and the company's clients. While these matters are mostly taken for granted by the consumer market, that's not the case for vendors. Client companies, manufacturers, and distributors are laser-focused on using only the logistics providers that can protect their brand image and expectation.
Organic Growth With Increasing Assets
While PrimeEFS itself is a significant asset, TLSS is unique by controlling an additional set of intrinsic assets. First, unlike competing companies, TLSS is an asset-based carrier that employs its staff through W-2 engagement. In other words, they do not use independent contractors to facilitate company functions. Second, TLSS only uses equipment that is owned or leased by the company, with maintenance being done in-house. Third, because TLSS manages its fleet and staff, the company may be in a significantly better position than its competition to achieve safety, reliability, and overall company performance.
Perhaps most relevant to the asset-based structure is that as the market continues to develop, e-commerce companies are trending toward, and even mandating, that their transportation service partners be asset-based. Thus, TLSS may be ahead of the curve when it comes to procuring and expanding new and current client relationships.
And, while TLSS has guided toward substantial growth in the coming quarters, the focus on creating higher shareholder value by seizing real-time opportunities to expand its services by scaling into metro markets is also a work already in progress. Moreover, strategic acquisitions, like the one announced with GRC Trucking, can bring additional diversified opportunities by opening new geographic markets that can leverage the experience and assets of the company to a broader client base. Notably, TLSS has suggested that there is an ample pool of quality logistics companies nationwide that can be accretive to the company quickly expanding routes and client connections.
TLSS Adapts to Client Systems and Expectations Of Crisis Demand
As a primary concern, even the best companies need to stay focused on the most essential component for success -customer service. Failing to maintain a competitive advantage or not responding to change can transform a leader into a follower quickly. TLSS is addressing that reality with action.
The primary advantage of TLSS's growing success is that they can become experts on their clients' platform.
This expertise allows TLSS to integrate seamlessly. Referring to themselves as technology agnostic, TLSS understands the value of using a client's systems rather than connecting other, third party logistics systems. The ability to connect to its clients' network also helps to deliver transparent, accurate, and timely records that provide a superior level of trust compared to companies that utilize third-party systems. Each of these components are assets that offer TLSS an advantage over competing providers.
Further, TLSS maintains strict records about the health and performance of its fleet in Fleetio, an industry-recognized fleet management and maintenance system that is audited daily by company management. The results of proactively maintaining its delivery assets help to ensure that its trucks and vans are 100% operational, which produces the company's high on-time delivery times and enhances the safety of its core asset – its drivers.
In addition to focusing on its fleet and personnel, TLSS offers its NOC platform that provides its clients the real-time status of every delivery and shipment. The program also provides clients with geographical location, when the shipment will arrive, and if any issues have transpired during its transportation. These advantages are important to the client and allow them to communicate with their own customers with facts rather than speculation. In effect, NOC is a valuable asset that closes the communication loop between the supplier, TLSS, and the end customer.
Global Demand Exposes TLSS's Strength
Undoubtedly, the world is witnessing trying and unprecedented times relating to the Coronavirus. And, as much as people would like to turn off the investment screen, the reality is that investors are still managing and deploying capital. For that reason, keeping an eye on an opportunity for long-term growth is ongoing.
Well managed, asset-based, and significant logistics partnerships are only some of the factors bringing attention to Transportation and Logistics Systems, Inc. The real measure comes from their opportunity to participate in a trillion-dollar e-commerce economy, where reputation and performance matter. And, its from those inherent assets that TLSS can expand its revenue base and leverage asset-based utilization levels to their fullest potential. Combined, this asset-based logistics provider may already have the pieces in place to drive substantial long-term growth.
And, after this current crisis passes, TLSS may be in an even stronger position to maximize its growth strategies.

Tom Richards joins 21GRAMS as co-global chief creative officer
Tumblr media
W2O advertising and marketing agency 21GRAMS has appointed Tom Richards as its co-global chief creative officer.
He joins the firm from Havas Lynx where, as chief creative officer, he grew the UK healthcare communications agency’s creative department to more than 100 and led the company to win the Lions Health Healthcare Agency of the Year in 2018.
He said: “I have always admired 21GRAMS and its philosophy of finding what makes people tick, and creating work that really ‘gets’ them. Work that doesn’t just compete with other brands, but anything fighting for the audience’s attention.
“It’s not every day you get to be a part of, and help build, a new kind of health agency – one with a passion for creativity at its heart and soul. The leadership team has great chemistry and delights in doing things differently, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
21GRAMS joined W2O in January, adding to the group’s recent acquisitions of Arcus Medica, ISO.health and Radius Digital Science and continuing the expansion of its advertising and digital capabilities.
In his new role Richards, who will remain based in the UK, will serve as a creative partner to the US-based Frank Mazzola, who’s one of the company’s founding members and its other co-global chief creative officer.
He said: “Ask any agency in health, around the world, who would be on their wish list, 9 out of 10 will say Tom Richards. The work he’s led consistently shows the industry what great looks like. Not just in ideas that break the norms of traditional advertising, but in craft.
“As someone who came up in copy, and Tom in art, we complement each other well. I’ve been a fan for years, so it’s an honour to partner alongside and see what we can do together. The goal is to open doors no one knew existed for the industry.”
Meanwhile, Richards’ previous agency Havas Lynx recently promoted its executive creative director (ECD) duo of Jon Chapman and Paul Kinsella to chief creative officers (CCOs) to drive its creative vision.

Terror In a Texas Town - “Yes I Have Killed Many Whales”
Last night we watched this B Western from the late fifties, starring one of my favorite actors from the period, Sterling Hayden. Now, Hayden wasn't really all that good of an actor, but he had an interesting backstory, a great unique look and a wonderful booming baritone voice, and he could really shine in the hands of a talented director (Kubrick in 'The Killing' and 'Dr. Strangelove', Altman in 'The Long Goodbye' or Coppola in 'The Godfather'). In this one, he plays the son of a swedish seaman, who has been killed by greedy landbarons over his farm, and the movie starts out with an unusual main street showdown between a guy with a two gun rig (dressed in black, so you can assume he's the bad guy) and Hayden armed with nothing but a whale harpoon. We spend the next hour and twenty minutes flashing back to see how we get there, and then are paid off with a harpoon to the gut (did you expect anything else?). Also features Sebastian Cabot as the 'always eating' robber baron, and Nedrick Young as the gunman who does his bidding. Unfortunately, Hayden is saddled with a hilarious Swedish accent throughout which makes some scenes more unintentionally funny than they were probably meant to be.
While researching this movie I ran across a wonderfully entertaining review online. I ended up spending a lot of time at this site reading some of this guy's other reviews of forgotten and overlooked B movie treasures. Nice stuff.

Hemophilia, humor and a hipster host: Genentech spotlights its new YouTube reality show
CANNES, FRANCE—A reality show about hemophilia? And it's a comedy? That would be Roche’s Genentech and ad agency 21 Gram’s new YouTube series called “Challenge Accepted.”
Each 15-minute episode of the show, which premiered last week, features a different patient, coach and lesson for the primary target audience of boys and young men with hemophilia and their parents. It gets that lesson across using humor—and some magic tricks.
Hosted by magician and comedian Justin Willman, the first season features six episodes that tackle issues such as relationships, sibling rivalry and depression, aiming to reach not just patients but their parents, too. One episode encourages viewers to step out of their comfort zones.
“Because people are born with it and they’ve had it for life, it impacts a lot of their life beyond just bleeding. We wanted to talk about all those things that they experience,” said Suha Patel, Genentech marketing principal in hemophilia, presenting the case study here at Lions Health.
But Genentech wanted to engage patients in an offbeat way. 21 Grams research outlined the challenges—such as breaking through to a difficult-to-engage audience and addressing topics viewers wouldn't want to talk about. And then they had an "aha!" moment.
Frank Mazzola, 21 Grams’ chief creative officer, explained that the team realized the way to do it was “the same way any culture has made every once-uncomfortable issue mainstream.” Through TV shows.
They shot the six episodes in nine days, and it was not your average commercial ad shoot. The worst storms in a decade hit California during the shoot. Finding a cast of rare disease patients wasn't easy. Plus, the team was working with a limited budget and within strict regulatory deadlines.
And then there was the challenge of being the first.
“Health does not like to be the first at anything,” Mazzola said. “When you do it, though, it’s an amazing thing and hopefully you open the door for other people.”
Patel agreed. In fact, she had told Mazzola she built the Lions Health talk around healthcare marketers' general reluctance to take risks. But as she said: “I often say you can decide in the morning if you want to be courageous or do you want to be comfortable? If you want to be comfortable, do the brochure. … If you want to be courageous, know it’s going to be a hard year.”
Her advice to other companies after the year of the show, from creation to debut, is to make sure to take the whole company along on the journey. Inform everyone, including medical and legal departments, about what’s going on—from the beginning brief to the final production—and help them buy into a different way of doing advertising, she said.
Mazzola distilled his lessons learned to three key points: Never underestimate the power of entertainment, remember that medicine is still the best medicine but laughter helps and, lastly, lighten up.
“It’s health, but there are definitely different emotions other than inspiring or overwhelming or scary or any of those things, and it’s really time that we start looking at that,” he said.
