The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli & Baloo (1997)
Tumblr media
It should go without saying but it apparently wasn’t obvious to Dee McLachlan: if you don’t have the means to make a Jungle Book movie, don’t make one. This film, not based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Second Jungle Book as the title suggests, is cheap and filled with irritating characters that have no business being there. It’s hard to imagine anyone enjoying this cash grab.
In India, 1890, Mowgli (Jamie Williams), the man-cub raised by wolves meets a trained monkey named Timo. Escaping with the animal towards the jungle, he is pursued by an American circus scout named Harrison (Billy Campbell), a snake-charmer named Karait (Dyrk Ashton), Timo’s rightful owner, Chuchundra (David Paul Francis) and Mowgli’s scheming uncle, Buldeo (Gulshan Grover).
Notice how few animals I mentioned in my brief synopsis. This is because of the razor-thin budget. It rarely allows for both animals and the young actor on-screen simultaneously. There are just enough scenes of Jamie Williams close to his friend and mentor, Baloo the bear, for him to have a spot on the title card. Otherwise, the animals in this picture do very little. Instead, make way for a bunch of human characters, none of whom you’ll care for. Before we dig into them, I want you to know that none of the animals in The Second Jungle Book talk. Instead, voice-over narration explains how they relate to Mowgli, who also has no real dialogue and therefore, no personality. This film depends entirely on you being familiar with Rudyard Kipling’s work, which explains the misnomer of a title. I’d bet my hat this film was only released to capitalize on the 1994 version of The Jungle Book, or perhaps rushed out to beat 1998’s The Jungle Book: Mowgli’s Story to the home video market.
Part of what makes the film's humans insufferable are their lack of personalities. Harrison is a plank of wood; a generic, competent good guy. Karait is a bit more interesting but only because visually, he looks like one of Lord Voldemort’s followers with his missing eyebrows, yellow pupils and tendency to stretch out any “ssss” sounds. By bringing him in, the picture manages to squeeze in a snake called Kaa. It’s The Jungle Book, and not a repurposed Tarzan script… we swear! As for Chuchundra, he's nothing but a bumbling would-be source of comic relief you wish would get swallowed by a tiger as soon as he enters the screen. We’ve saved the best for last. It’s the villain, Buldeo. Firstly, what are the odds the one person Harrison approaches about going into the jungle and finding a wild boy happens to be said boy’s uncle? He joins the search in order to kill Mowgli because if the boy returns to civilization, he’ll rob Buldeo of the fortune he inherited from his brother… except no one but him ever mentions his nephew Mowgli. If he hadn’t said anything, he could’ve saved himself a trip in the trees. And yes, in case you’re wondering, the boy was named “Mowgli” before wolves raised him. What a coincidence the animals who don’t speak human just happened to pick a human name for him!
Soon after the film begins, you’ll already be checking your watch, hoping this cheap production will be over. I was going to say the film was doomed from the start, that there was no way to make a live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book without the use of CGI… until I remembered the 1942 version featuring Indian-American actor Sabu, which is great! There are no excuses for this shoddy a film and no reason for anyone to watch The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo. (Full-screen version on DVD, December 2, 2018)

A thought: Moist von Lipwig, but more 18th c slang. For example:
Moist: So, just as I was about to track up the dancers and pike with the peeper, I got tapped on the shoulder, and Mr. Thingstable thought he'd made a canary bird of me, but sweet's my hand! I filed the Harmen's cly for the locksmith's daughter and I expect l'Il have a squeak and ride Bayard of ten toes in the blind man's holiday until I can get a prancer and buy a brush. Unfortunately, I'll need to play least in sight before I bilk here again, but at least I won't dance the Paddington frisk at Beilby's ball anytime soon.
Some poor watchperson who just joined the watch: *crying* "I don't know what you're saying!" Or
Tumblr media
Translation: So, just as I was about to run up the stairs and run away with the mirror, I got arrested, and the policeman thought he'd made a prisoner of me, but I'm quite dexterous (and therefore a good pickpocket)! I picked the policeperson's pocket for the key and I expect I'll escape and walk in the night until I can get a horse and go off. Unfortunately, I'll need to lie low before I cheat here again, but at least I won't hang anytime soon.

► I SOLEMNLY SWEAR THAT I AM UP TO NO GOOD ◄
“Love is a risk for anyone, but for me, knowing what love did for my mother, how could I not fear it?”

Reign Preference
Writer: im-a-writer—im-in-distress.tumblr.com
Fandom: Reign
Preference with: Francis de Valois, Bash de Poitier,  Leith Bayard, Stéphane Narcisse, Henry II of France, Louis Condé
Rating: #Romance
Words: 750+
Warning(s): N/A
A/N: So... 1) I found these on my computer. I don’t remember when I wrote them, but it wasn’t for this blog. Which means it was for the old one I used to share with a friend, which means it’s been... 6+ years? I don’t remember when I wrote them, but I thought they were good, and worth sharing. (As such, they are unedited.) So, I’m posting them, along with another set: here. 2) I will not be creating an OC-version for these. Better to just let them be what they are. 3) If anyone’s interested in preferences, request away. I really need an excuse to get back into writing. And 5) Read & Review. I hope you like them.
Francis II
As king, Francis is often surrounded by the guard and he can never get a moment alone with you. To see you across the table or at the end of the corridor and not being able to touch you is killing him. So he retires early to his chambers one night and sneaks out to see you, leaving his unknowing guards by his bedroom door. Bribing one of the maids into secrecy, he smuggles the makings of a picnic from the kitchen before going to meet you out by the lake’s edge—where he knows you go to escape. He surprises you, dropping down beside you with the basket, that smile of child-like innocence on his face. The two of you enjoy the picnic, talking about less complicated things than politics or the juicy gossip from court. You tell him about your home, who you were as a child. He says he’d like to visit with you one day—you say you’ll take him.
Tumblr media
Bash de Poitier
His new title of “King’s Deputy” keeps Bash busy most of the time, and by the end of the day, he usually just wants to crash. You know he feels bad, but it’s exhausting—what he does. So you decide to help him. You run to the stables and ready your own horse, before mounting and going to meet him at the entrance of the castle. His eyes light up when he sees what you were aiming to do, but he assures you that he’s not working today. Instead he climbs up behind you on your horse, and the two you take off across the open fields of France. You don’t know how long you ride, but when you stop, you no longer recognize the surroundings. You’ve reached an open meadow full of bright wild flowers dotting across the horizon. Bash helps you dismount, and then hands you his sword. You brighten as you he holds you from behind, showing you how to wield it. After you get the hang of it, he takes out a dagger of his own and you two spar as silhouettes on the sunset.
Tumblr media
Leith Bayard
The two of you act like the oldest of friends. Whenever you get a chance, you make trouble for each other. You’ll leave little trails for him to follow, aiming to confuse him into giving up and asking you straight out. He’ll interrupt any conversation you try to have with anyone, even if could get you both in a load of trouble. He words himself trying to make you blush, and you challenge him with seemingly innocent quips. It’s usually you who loses, as he’s just so charming. But those rare moments when you beat him—those make you feel invincible.
Tumblr media
Stéphane Narcisse
Aside from the smirks from across the room or the brush of a touch as you pass each other in the hall, you and Narcisse haven’t had any time together for a long time. You have to keep up appearances: keep your mouth shut where you’re opinion doesn’t belong, engage in polite conversation with the person next to you, smiling at their flirtations. But seeing one grab your arm and pull you close—he snaps. Narcisse makes a beeline for you, yanking you away from them and out of the room. He doesn’t stop until you’re in an abandoned corridor. His eyes bore into yours; you’re breathing shallow and heavy. He orders you to stop teasing him, that you smiling at someone else isn’t okay. Instead you tip your lips to his ear and whisper, “Let the games begin.”
Tumblr media
Henry II of France
It’s hardly state secret what you and Henry do behind closed doors, but it’s the moments you share in the open that you cherish the most. The light touches, the bright smiles, the way his eyes hold yours. He can’t tell you much. Your situation is complicated and fragile, but it never feels that way. And you never mind being the one to fill conversation, because he always listens with such intent. You wonder what kind of king he could have been if everyone had seen that side of him. But despite it all, you love the man he is now, because if everyone had seen him that way, you’d never have him.
Tumblr media
Louis Condé
Lord Condé was never entitled like the rumors of the family assured. It was refreshing to meet a royal who didn’t just view everyone else as pawn pieces. In fact, the very concept of the game made his head spin. You grew up playing it with whoever lost a bet to you, so teaching Condé seemed an easy task—It wasn’t. But it was rather amusing. The poor man refused to place any of his pieces in the line of fire, instead preferring to spend the entirety of the game running away from your pieces. You couldn’t really blame him. You were the best at the game.

Handbook Teaser
SP Faces: Skulduggery's Family Edition 2.0
Top: Carver Gallant, Skulduggery Pleasant, Confelicity Divine
Second Row: Francis Gadabout, Petulance Ruin, Uther Peccant
Third Row: Bayard Muchly, Sophrosyne Grace
Bottom Row: Apricity Delight, Respair Kempt
In the Handbook, all Skug's siblings have fully-fleshed-out backstories and personalities, and they all get a little section about their personal history. I have kept almost nothing from the Grimoire's "Abrogate Raze" sections, because like 98% of that storyline sucked ass. Also, some names changed, either for brainrot reasons - "Fransic Catawampus" is the stupidest fucking name in the entire series, fight me Lardo - or to fit the personalities I gave them.
