The wings were there: faux feathered, quilted, tulle, tinsel and star-spangled. So were the crystal bustiers and bras; the lacy thongs and boudoir silks. So were the superstars: Lisa, hopping off a motorcycle and hip thrusting in little bits of leather; Tyla, shimmying in hot pants; Cher, in sparkling cargo pants and a corset.

And so were the supermodels, almost all of ’em: Gigi and Bella Hadid, Paloma Elsesser, Joan Smalls, Ashley Graham, Valentina Sampaio, Kate Moss and her daughter, Lila. Even Eva Herzigova and Carla Bruni, the 56-year-old former first lady of France, strutting down the runway in a lace body stocking. Even, especially, Tyra Banks, in leggings, a silver waist cincher and a cape.

All the ingredients were there for the rebrand of the rebrand of the Victoria’s Secret show, six years after the whole shebang was canceled under a cloud of shame and in the wake of #MeToo.

That was when the world suddenly woke up to the fact that what had been billed as a camp spectacle of madonna/whore kitsch was actually complicit in creating a culture that prioritized a certain body type over all others and that treated women simply as vehicles of male fantasy. (Naughty Santas! Naughty lion tamers! Naughty Rob Roys!)

And that was when the lingerie giant that had successfully branded women-in-underwear as “angels” embarked on an extended period of shrinking market share, soul-searching, corporate reorganization and public pledges to devote itself to female empowerment. It was an about-face so extreme and hard to swallow that the world actually started calling for the return of the wings.

So VS obliged. But in a fashion show in which, the voice-over before the show announced, “the women hold the reins.” Where “on the runway, it’s all about the women.”

Was it?

Only if you still buy into the idea that every woman shares a similar fantasy, which involves a not-so-secret desire to playact as a present in a giant bow, waiting to be, literally, unwrapped.

Yes, there were more body types on the runway, including trans bodies, than there had been in the past and more women of a variety of ages. Everything was shoppable during the livestream, meaning that the actual lingerie was more accessible than absurdist. (There was no fantasy diamond bra.) There were even some pajama bottoms and a sheer bias-cut slip dress or two from the designer Joseph Altuzarra.

Almost all of the models got wings, or at least a robe with a train, rather than some of the more egregious accessories of the earlier shows. Many of those wings looked, like the undies themselves, easier to wear than the old 30-pound versions. But a lot of them also looked as if they had been bought at the Halloween store down the street. And there is a difference between celebrating real physical diversity and celebrating people whose fame is greater than any size.

Maybe it was the smoke machine, maybe it was the pink confetti that rained down from the ceiling at the finale, maybe it was the model Doutzen Kroes getting her crystal-strapped stiletto stuck in the runway, but in the end the whole thing seemed less like a step forward than a hokey high school reunion. A gathering of the formerly most popular, dressed up in the finery of yesteryear, reliving a moment that had taken on, in the haze of nostalgia or the real complications of the outside world (or just the disco lighting), a deceptively rosy pink glow.

But it also prompted the same reaction that seeing a room full of people in their old prom dresses does: What were we thinking?

At this point, no matter how it is framed or who is behind the curtain, the Victoria’s Secret show is simply a relic of another time. That doesn’t mean that women can’t have fun with lingerie — or, indeed, with VS products — but that this particular way of displaying it should be retired. There’s a distorted history that lies under the lace that cannot really be erased.

If there’s one thing that really isn’t a secret, it’s that parading scantily clad bodies, no matter what size or age, down a runway is simply not about empowerment. It’s about objectification — even if it’s equal opportunity objectification. And that there are as many fantasies and definitions of sexy as there are people in the world and that many of them (maybe most of them) don’t involve wings.

In this au, no one is related. It primary focuses on the bad friends trio, mainly Marianne who studies to be a french teacher. She has hourglass figure with big tits and butt. Julia swears she would fight Amelia next time she sees her. No one makes her friend cry like that. Carmen makes sure Marianne stay hydrated and has enough tissues for her tears. She thinks Carmen's warmth is very comforting and Carmen copies what Marianne does to comfort her by gently running her hand in her hair.

Next time Julia sees Amelia, it doesn't go as Julia planned. She starts to confront her about bullying her friend but Amelia ignored her. "I don't listen to creepy guys who makes people believe he's a woman when he's just a creep using women's bathroom to look at women."

Eli, Sakura and sometimes Madeline take some times to sit down and drink tea together. Madeline is shy at first, but Sakura and Elizabeth both make her feel welcomed.Madeline is a bit jealous that Sakura has a girlfriend and Elizabeth has lovers. She has troubles making friends outside of her roommates and would like a partner to cuddle with. She often confines herself in her room, especially when Amelia or Elizabeth's friends are over. Both Madeline and Elizabeth find Amelia way too loud anyway. Since Sakura notices this, she would either bring Amelia to her bedroom or they would hang out at Amelia’s apartment.

More rage filled Julia's whole body when she hears Amelia openly misgenders and bullies her like that. Separating this because I wanna talk about Monika, Veronika and Johanna a little.

This is the coat in question, found by the lovely @skarsgard-daydreams who has some amaaazing Merkel fashion posts. *The coat* has haunted me in the best possible way.

“Ahhhh, there you are my beauty.”

To an outsider, it may have sounded as though Merkel was addressing his girlfriend, the woman who shared his apartment and captured his heart. But his eyes and hands weren’t on the woman he professed his love for, instead he was stroking up and down the arm of the damned fur coat he had purchased a week earlier.

She knew it was ridiculous to feel jealous over an inanimate object, but her breaking point came when the previous night Merkel had insisted that the coat stayed on during sex. Men Suck No Matter the Nation - Emily in Paris Episode 2 Recap (Spoilers!!)

First of all, where the hell did Emily get this French-teaching rosetta-stone thing she is listening to? It tells her, “my name is Marc” should be “mon nom est Marc,” which, while a direct translation, is not correct French, and if she used it that way, any French person would laugh in her face.

Anyway, the episode starts with her running again (I hate people who run. Get over yourselves.) She quickly stops to fat shame some artwork and then returns to her building where she somehow goes to the wrong apartment again. She’s so stupid, and I hate her. This show is fantastic.

She steps in dogshit (which gave me serotonin, not gonna line) and then posts on her social media about it. Somehow, she knows the word “merde” but not “je m’appelle.”  This is where we see she has somehow gone from 230 followers to 1435 followers, all in the time it takes her to get dressed. Also, Emily JUST now notices her interactions, which is unbelievable for an average person, let alone someone who posts as much as she does, and especially not for someone who is supposed to work in social media marketing!!

She then proposes a marketing campaign to her boss, Sylvie, who points out that...uh, exclusivity is the whole point of exclusive brands? Luxuries aren’t luxuries if everyone has them? Sylvie is right a lot, I’m noticing.

At a work-party, Emily gushes about a marketing campaign she did for a vaccine where whenever someone googles “tropical vacation,” “paradise,” or “beach,” her product would come up. First off, that is not how that product would be marketed. Second of all, if that were true, everyone involved was terrible at their jobs; the marketing people for her product, the marketing people for tropical hotels and resorts, heck, even the people in charge of google search results. If you googled a tropical resort, and the first thing that came up was a vaccine for an illness you might get there, that’s not going to make you want to get the vaccine; it’s going to make you want to vacation somewhere else.

Emily then gets approached by one of her company’s clients, Antoine, who sucks. I know Emily is big-dumb, but no woman, in 2020, is THAT oblivious to being sexually harassed. They’re at a work function, and he’s talking to her about lingerie and pleasing men, then tells her she smells like “expensive sex.” I know you can’t necessarily tell a big client to get fucked, but she doesn’t even seem uncomfortable. It feels like the audience is supposed to interpret this as perfectly normal, which makes me quite uncomfortable. Also, not nearly as important, but “the best way to learn a language is in bed” seems like bad advice. I just feel like the vocabulary you would learn would be pretty limited.  

Though Antoine wants Emily on the team for his perfume, Sylvie insists that she would be a better fit for a lubricant for old women, vaja-jeune. And I know that this is because Sylvie is jealous of Antoine giving Emily attention; still, Sylvie is right (AGAIN); this is a better fit for Emily, who has experience in pharmaceuticals. 

Julien then comes over and reveals that Sylvie is Antoine’s mistress, which, like, Sylvie could do so much better.

Emily, carrying the most hideous handbag of all time, meets up with her new friend, Mindy, who explains French affairs to her. There is no way that Emily had no idea about mistresses in France, unless she grew up under a rock. Emily is so naive that it isn’t endearing; it’s annoying. I hate her with a passion. This show is fantastic.

 At this dinner, we learn that Mindy abandoned being rich as fuck to be a nanny, but it’s okay because now she has her “freedom”, whatever the fuck that means. The next discovery is that Emily is a Karen, who thinks she can “teach the chef a thing or two about customer service.” Just when I thought she couldn’t get any worse.

The chef turns out to be the hot guy whose apartment she keeps trying to break into, so she eats her steak without making him recook it. She discovers that she’s wrong and says it’s “surprisingly tender,” and only Emily is dumb enough to be surprised that meat that’s less cooked is more tender.

In the next scene, we see her boyfriend, Doug, who is supposed to get on a plane in the next five minutes, call to tell her he isn’t coming. It feels like he could’ve called maybe a BIT earlier. He tells her that he doesn’t want to explore Paris alone and that she should quit her job and come home because he “doesn’t know how to do long-distance.” Here’s an idea, Doug, you could fucking try?! I mean, this guy SUCKS. I hate him. SO MUCH. I actually hate him to the point that it makes me kind of...like Emily. I know, shocking, right? Emily breaks up with him, thankfully (and obviously).

Then, she posts on her Instagram about the old lady-lube and, apparently, Brigitte Macron tweets about it. You know, Brigitte Macron? The First Lady of France? Who definitely spends her time tweeting links to Instagram posts from accounts with like 5000 followers, referencing her dried out vagina? I’m all for suspension of disbelief, but come on. The episode ends with her coworkers toasting her over this and calling her their “vaga-jeune,” which translates to “young vagina.” Kind of seems inappropriate for her coworkers to call her, but maybe that’s just me.

"The extended monologue of Police Capt. James Coy, the leading man, yesterday prevented the conclusion of the drama 'Are We Immoral or Are We Merely Beautiful?' presented by Earl Carroll's 'Vanities' in Jefferson Market court. Next week: Essex Market court.

"That, in the language of the theatre program, is what happened on the second day of the courtroom run of 'Vanities' special command performance.

"Coy-by-name-and-nature, Capt. Coy stole the show, from the time he said mincing Faith Bacon was 'stark naked from the nape of her neck down to her heels,' until Magistrate Maurice Gottlieb suddenly adjourned the hearing on Wales law indecency charges with the explanation that he had important business to transact.

"If Earl Carroll, Jimmy Savo, the low comedian, and the eight beauties the police are attempting to jail for their antics in the current revue at the New Amsterdam theatre are jealous of Coy's performance yesterday, they must take advantage of their day on the court stage in Essex Market on Tuesday next.

"Coy, kittenish ex-star of 'Pleasure Man's' courtroom run, gave a monologue that for stark realism matched the supposed stark nakedness which caused Wednesday's matinee raid at the New Amsterdam and the arrest of the eight coryphees--Naomi Ray, Irene Ahlberg, Eileen Wenzel, Faith Bacon, Kay Carroll, Constance Trevor, Betty Veronica and Frances Joyce.

"Blushing furiously, Capt. Coy began by identifying Miss Bacon, who not only wore clothes, but even furs in court-a gray fox fur choker, a gray-and-blue sports ensemble and a purple cloche hat.

"Q: 'Now, Capt. Coy, your version, please?' said Assistant District Attorney Louis Wasser. A. 'I bought two tickets for the "Vanities" performance at a ticket agency near the theatre and went to my seat which was marked "M," the tenth row.' " 'Tell us everything you saw in the theatre?' interrupted the magistrate.

" 'But your honor,' said Wasser. 'that will take all day.'

"'Well, then will you continue with the alleged objectionable scenes?' Gotlieb replied. A. 'The first scene I considered objectionable showed a number of females lying on their backs on the stage. The defendant, Faith Bacon, came down the center of the stage, swinging two large fans, and danced. When she turned during her dance I could see her naked body from the nape of her neck down to the heels, from a side and rear view.'

" 'Could you see the front of her body?' asked the magistrate. A. 'No, she swung her fans in such a manner that only her face was showing.'

"Capt. Coy, who objected later to being styled an expert, described the entrance of Miss Bacon onto the stage, clad similar to Lady Godiva, in long blonde tresses and with two fans instead of a white charger.

" 'Was she naked?' Magistrate Gotlieb asked. 'Absolutely and positively,' the captain replied.

" 'Do you wear glasses?' asked Attorney Vorhaus. A. 'Only for reading.'

"Q. Did you notice a gauze curtain between the dancers and the audience? A. Yes, a curtain of thin gauze.

"Q. But still you insist that with eyes that need glasses to read with and a distance of thirty-five to forty feet away you were still able to see whether or not Miss Bacon wore absolutely no clothing? A. Absolutely, she was stark naked.

"At this point the star in question smeared on some lipstick and turned her eyes heavenward in utter boredom.

" 'If I had a couple of fans here I would show how it was done,' said Coy waving his hands in circular motion. The crowd roared but newspapermen recalled the splendid imitations Coy had given when prosecuting Mae West and her cast in 'Pleasure Man.'

"For a time Magistrate Gotlieb considered clearing the courtroom, but officers circulating through the 300 men and women restored order and quieted the laughter that followed Coy's offer to mimic the dainty Faith Bacon.

"Q.- 'Will you admit the stage was darkened?' asked Vorhaus. A. - 'Sure, partly darkened,' said Coy.

"Q. - "Were you shocked, captain?' said the magistrate. A.- 'I certainly was shocked, your honor.'

"Several times during Coy's testimony smill Jimmy Savo would grit his teeth and make utterances under his breath at the captain. Carroll and others in the defense group would laugh and pat him on the shoulder to quiet him.

"Attorney Benjamin J. Rubin, who defended the show girls, was next to cross-examine Coy. He said:

" 'Your honor, it is my intention to show that all stage dances are meant to bring out an illusion.' Turning to Coy, he said:

"Q. 'Do you know what the illusion of a dance is?' A. 'No.'

"Q. 'Have you ever seen Isadora Duncan dance?' A. 'No.'

Naomi Ray and Savo came on the stage and she said to him: "Now, I'll tell you how to dress a window." She sent him over to Miss Frances Joyce and he started removing her stockings, under her direction.'

"Q. 'Was she sitting?' asked Vorhaus. A. 'No, standing.'

"Q. 'While she was standing did he (Savo) kneel down to remove the stockings?' asked the magistrate. A. 'Yes.'

" 'Then,' when on Coy, 'Miss Ray said, "Do you follow me?" and Savo said, "I'm way ahead of you." Then he went to Miss Kay Carroll and took off her gown--'

"Q. 'Was she--was she standing there then in her--er-er-er-what shall we call it--lingerie?' asked the magistrate. A. 'Yes,' said Coy.

" 'Go on, go on.'

" 'Then, while she was putting on a gown with a fuller and wider skirt her bloomers dropped off and Savo put his head under the gown to adjust the apparel. I could put on the bloomers without putting my head under the dress.'

" 'I didn't,' Savo muttered. 'I did not.' Carroll and the others quieted him.

"Coy was the target of a barrage of questions from Attorney Vorhaus concerning a visit he made to the New Amsterdam theatre on Wednesday a few hours after the raid.

"Q. 'What did you go there for?' asked Vorhaus. A. 'I went to see whether any of the crimes were still being committed and intended to make summary arrests, for the persons were out on bail.'

"With Coy's testimony finished, the magistrate said:

" 'I have important business to attend to, and we'll adjourn until next Tuesday and resume this trial in Essex Market court.'

"Objections by Wasser brought no answer from Gotlieb.

"As though the pale Carroll, who hints that rivals instigated the raid on his 'Vanities,' hasn't enough court troubles already, the Shuberts crashed down on him with an injunction suit yesterday.

"Seeking to force Carroll to discontinue the sensational under-sea ballet-a big feature of the current 'Vanities'- the Shuberts charge he stole the idea for which they paid good, hard cash.

"The Shuberts say they bought the American rights to the idea after they saw the under-sea balley in the famous 'Folies Bergere' of Paris."

Coy, Ex-Elephant Washer, Proves 'Vanities' Lewdness

"This ex-Maharajah of Baluchistan--otherwise Capt. James Coy, official police censor--convinced Magistrate Maurice Gotlieb in Essex Market court yesterday that Earl Carroll's latest 'Vanities' is, or was, an indecent performance.

"Cross-examination of Coy revealed his identity as the ex-maharajah. Before becoming a police officer-and later the moral watchdog of Broadway shows-the captain confessed he had worked for a circus washing elephants for 50 cents a day.

"His laundry work was done in the morning; so Coy was able to pose as the maharajah on the elephant line, when the crowds trooped into the circus grounds for the afternoon performance.

"The captain, who caused the arrest of Carroll, Jimmy Savo, the pantomiming comedian, Faith Bacon and seven other beauties of the 'Vanities' cast, freely admitted that rajahing and washing elephants was the limit to histrionic experience.

"But he so graphically reiterated previous testimony and stuck to his description of scenes 5 and 12 in the 'Vanities' so tenaciously that Magistrate Gotlieb said he was convinced that the 'Vanities' had been a lewd performance.

"He gave Louis Vorhaus and Julius Kindler, Carroll's council, until Thursday afternoon to file briefs, but he said:

" 'I believe that nudity existed in this show, and whether indecency takes place on the stage or any other public place in the jurisdiction of the courts of New York, the defendant must respond.'

"The 'defendant' means Miss Bacon, principal in the fan dance, Carroll and Savo with Irene Ahlberg, Constance Trevor, Eileen Wenzel, Frances Joyce, Kay Carroll, Naomi Ray and Betty Veronica, the latter seven participants in the window dressing scene, considered objectionable by Coy.

"All arguments by defense consel could not change Gotlieb's position and he brought the hearing to a close by saying:

" 'There is much at stake for the defendants, and it will do no good to file a defense here, for it has gone out of my jurisdiction.'

"This remark seemed to indicate that the magistrate had determined to hold the defendants for trial in a court of record.

"Just as he did at the first session of the Vanities courtroom scenes, Coy stole the show from the time he was called to the stand for questioning until he was excused.

"The first question was by Kindler, conducting the cross-examination.

"Q.-Captain, now in your previous testimony you testified that the defendant Savo put his hand under the dresss of the defendant Joyce and his head under the gown of defendant (Kay) Carroll. Is that your recollection? A.-He put his head under the Carroll dress and his hand under the dress of the defendant Joyce. That is true.

"Q.-Can you tell me what hand he put under the dress? A.-Yes, it was the right hand because it was the right stocking he took off.

"Q.-You're absolutely sure of that and even from where you were sitting you can tell us how he did this? A.-Absolutely, if you bring the defendant Joyce here and the court permits it-

"(The Court) 'We'll have no such demonstration as that here. Let that be settled once and for all.'

"After several minutes of wrangling over technicalities in which the court, prosecuting and defense attorneys figuered, Kindler asked Coy:

"Q. Now, in that window dress scene 'A Window at Merl's,' Miss Ray was posing as the owner of shop and was instructing Mr. Savo how to dress a model. A.-That's correct.

"Q. You could see from where you were sitting all right? A. Perfectly.

"Q. But you didn't notice any panels in the dress which you say Mr. Savo stuck his head beneath did you? A. Not to my recollection.

"Q. But you know that Miss Ray took the first dress off the defendant Carroll and put on another dress, don't you? A. Yes, I saw that distinctly and the defendant Carroll was standing on the stage in her underwear.

"Q. And you didn't see any panels in the dress into which Savo might insert his head without placing it under the skirt? A. No, it looked like an ordinary evening gown to me.

"Kindler: Do the panties fall off this defendant Carroll? A. (coyly) Yes, the little panties fall down.

"Q. Does Savo put the panties on? A. Yes, he puts his head under the dress and is concealed from the audience--

"(Court) Do they fit up to the waistlines? Panties do don't they? I don't know much about panties.

"Coy: I saw the defendant Savo deliberately (an objection against this word caused him to leave it out of his answer) take the edge of the dress, and pull it over his head, which disappeared under the dress, and to my mind he put the bloomers back on the woman Carroll.

"At this point, Savo's mouth twitched and his hands were rubbing nervously while Carroll, who sat in a high backed chair, nibbled at his well manicured fingers and a half a dozen wrinkles secured fixtures on his brow.

"Kindler: The dress going over Savo's head might have been an accident, captain? Coy: (half-smiling) Absolutely not accidental.

"At this point, Kindler waved a page from a New York paper in the air and shouted at Coy: 'Did you not give this interview?'

"(Court) Please don't screech or yell.

"Kindler: Did you see 'Lysistrata'? Yes.

"Q. Did you say that, in your opinion, 'Lysistrata' was not obscene because it was an artistic production? A. I don't recall saying that.

"Q. When you saw the Vanities performance was the audience laughing? A. I don't know. I wasn't laughing. I was shocked.

"Here Attorney Vorhaus resumed the cross-examination.

"Q. How old are you captain? A. (after some hesitation) Going on 49 and I've been 20 years on the force.

"Q. You have been referred to here several times as captain. What is meant by that? A. (sarcastically) It means a grade above lieutenant.

"Q. (Vorhaus) Well, does it mean that you're a captain because of your own histrionic ability or talent? A. Because I do my duty.

"Q. But you have been an actor, haven't you, Capt. Coy? A.-Well, I used to be with the circus. (Coy appeared not to like it and his face became flushed.)

"Q. (by Vorhaus) What did you do in the circus? A. Well, I'll tell you. They used to say that I had a big job with the circus. I used to wash elephants. And O, yes, I was the Maharajah of Baluchistan, the High Potentate, but in reality I was merely a supernumerary getting 50 cents a day.

"The answer seemed to stop Attorney Vorhaus for he asked no more than a couple of other questions and Assistant District Attorney Wasser asked:

"Q.-Captain, how many nights did you see the pants drop? A.-On Monday and Tuesday nights.

"Q.-Then it couldn't have been accidental? A.-No.

" 'The people rest,' said Wasser.

"As other defense counsel sought to question Capt. Coy, the magistrate said:

" 'That's all, that'll be all. You can go now captain.'

"Vorhaus moved to have the case thrown out.

"Magistrate Gotlieb responded by telling Vorhaus that a defense in Magistrate's court would be wasted endeavor and in his opinion the dance by Miss Bacon was sufficient to convince him the show was immoral.

"More than 500 persons who gathered at 2nd Ave and 2nd St. were dispersed by a squad of patrolmen who allowed none but those having business in the court building to enter."

I also searched to see what the turnout of this case was. Apparently, Coy went ahead and demonstrated the fan dance during the trial, using his straw hat to represent the fans, but the jury wasn’t amused. The jury would not indict, but Carroll agreed to drop the scenes with almost-nudity from his show. Also, of the women who were arrested, only the ones who were directly involved were held. So that means Betty was soon let go, along with three of the other dancers. 

Also, Earl Carroll was used to flirting with trouble. He’d previously served jail time for exhibiting a naked/half-naked (depending on who you ask) girl at a party in a tub full of (then) illegal alcohol during the 1920s, even though he tried to claim the liquid was ginger ale.

Callot Soeurs was one of the leading fashion design houses of the 1910s and 1920s.

Callot Soeurs opened in 1895 at 24, rue Taitbout in Paris, France. It was operated by the four Callot sisters: Marie Callot Gerber, Marthe Callot Bertrand, Regina Callot Tennyson-Chantrell and Joséphine Callot Crimont.

The eldest sister, Marie, was trained in dressmaking, having earlier worked for Raudnitz and Co., prominent Parisian dressmakers, and they were all taught by their mother, a lacemaker. The sisters began working with antique laces and ribbons to enhance blouses and lingerie. Their success led to an expansion into other clothing.

In 1900, they were featured at the Paris World's Fair. That year, they had a staff of two hundred and did two million francs in sales. By 1901, they had tripled their workforce and doubled their sales.

Callot Soeurs's day dresses were well-received at the 1915 Universal Exhibition in San Francisco. In 1916, Henri Bendel was the largest buyer of Callot Soeurs in New York City.That same year, American Vogue dubbed the sisters the Three Fates, and declared them "foremost among the powers that rule the destinies of a woman's life and increase the income of France."

During World War I, American support was vital to the continued success of Callot Soeurs. While European sales fell, American buyers would order between 300 and 800 pieces every July. In response to the proliferation of knockoffs in the 1910s and 1920s, Callot Soeurs regularly placed advertisements in The New York Times listing the official retailers of their designs.

In 1919, Callot Soeurs moved to larger premises at 9-11 Avenue Matignon.

In 1920, Marthe Callot Bertrand suddenly died and the widowed Regina Callot Tennyson-Chantrell retired to care for her son. Marie Callot Gerber single-handedly ran the house for the next seven years.

In the 1920s, Callot Soeurs established branches in Nice, Biarritz, Buenos Aires, and London. A January 1922 article in Ladies' Home Journal claimed that "Callot probably has more rich clients than any other establishment in the world. They come from South America, from South Africa, and as far east as Japan.

Marie Callot Gerber died in 1927. Her obituary in Le Figaro commented: "One of the most beautiful figures of the Parisian luxury business has now disappeared."

In 1928, Pierre Gerber, Marie Callot Gerber's son, took over the business but could not survive in the highly competitive market and, in 1937, the House of Callot Soeurs closed and was absorbed into the House of Calvet (Marie-Louise Calvet); under the Callot label. However, World War II made matters difficult in France. Similarly to what happened with the House of Vionnet in 1939, Calvet and the Callot label finally closed in 1952.

They both pretend to be other people. He pretends to be Emmett Carver, henchman for Enzo “The Ruby” Crawford, an infamous gangster. She goes by Belle and pretends to love Enzo.

In reality, he’s Alec Hardy, an undercover detective investigating the East End gang’s activities.

In reality, she’s… well, Hardy doesn’t know her real name and doesn’t want to learn it. That way, he can’t betray her. But he knows she’s friendly and smarter than she pretends to be. He knows she fears Enzo.

Hardy went undercover a year ago. The Metropolitan police needed a copper from outside London to investigate the corruption amongst their own officers. Enzo’s gang has contacts in every police station, every branch of the government, every bank. Blackmail and bribery are the bricks and mortar of his criminal empire. He deals in illegal betting, protection rackets, black market weapons and opium. He built his reputation on cruelty: as far as Enzo’s concerned, everyone is fair game, even women and children. His nickname “The Ruby” is a reference to the colour of blood. The story goes that he loves to keep the stains on his clothes after a murder.

In the name of public protection and justice, Hardy replaced his suit and tie with rolled up shirtsleeves and steel-capped boots. Traded his police badge for the dark red suspenders symbolic of Enzo’s gang.

They told him he’d have to work his way up the ranks of the criminal organization. It could take months, years even, before Enzo trusted him with sensitive information. So for now, he’s relegated to menial tasks: surveillance, deliveries, dodgy transactions. Hardy’s not built for intimidation, but his accent alone forestalls backtalk.

Most policemen fear retaliation against their loved ones if their cover is blown. It’s not a problem for Hardy anymore. He came back from the Great War to find out that, while he was fighting for his life in the trenches of France, Tess had fallen in love with another man. They tried to put it all behind them and rebuild a life, they had a baby, but it only delayed the inevitable: Tess left and took their daughter with her. After that, for Hardy, becoming another person didn’t seem like such a bad idea.

One task he didn’t expect was driving the boss’s floozie to and from his home.

These days, so many young women wear short dresses and makeup, at first he can’t tell whether Belle is a prostitute or fashionable. On the drive back, she counts bills, but it doesn’t mean anything either. Enzo sees other girls, of course, but Belle is his favourite, the only one he sends a car for.

Hardy watches her in the rear-view mirror. A cloche hat sits low over her blond bob and obscures her kohl-rimmed eyes. She gnaws at her bottom lip, wrings her hands in her lap. He escorts her to the fourth floor of the hotel, in the lift, she takes deep breaths. When the doors open with a ping, a smile springs on her lips.

“Honeybear!” she says, running into Enzo’s arms.

She arrives with bright red lipstick and returns home without it, as if Enzo himself drained the colour out of her.

Hardy wonders if she once cared about Enzo. Is he blackmailing her? What does she need the money for? Does she have other clients? And he wonders why he wonders about her so much.

They’re long car rides; she lives on the other side of town. But he comes to appreciate these moments more than any others. She sits in the back and therefore cannot see his face. He can relax. Somewhat.

She’s friendly to everyone from members of the gang to the hotel staff. Hardy’s grumpy attitude doesn’t deter her. It starts with small things, a kind smile, a funny comment on the latest Chaplin movie, a snack shared. “Did you bake those scones yourself?” he asks. She laughs and it fills the whole car. The tunes she hums that haunt him all day (“Are you lonesome tonight? Do you miss me tonight?”). The shine of her sequined dress against the drab backseat of the model T’s interior.

One day, he finds out she’s lying about where she lives. She forgets a novel in the car, but when he tries to return it to her, he finds she’s not a tenant in the building where he drops her off. He doesn’t try to find out her real address. The less he knows and all that… She doesn’t want anyone in the gang to know where she lives. Smart lass.

He gives her the book back later, and she immediately notices he’s read it. “What did you think of Poirot?”

For a second there, he panics, thinks she’s asking because she knows he’s a detective. “Too intelligent,” he answers carefully.

“I hope this Agatha Christie will write other books. Have you read Evelyn Waugh?”

They begin exchanging novellas and paperbacks, a book club of their own with little notes in the margins like coded messages. He tells himself it’s innocent, yet he hides the books carefully.

He eats some of her taffies. She drinks from his flask.

When she’s in a hurry, she changes outfits while he drives. She adjusts her garter straps when she knows he’s watching in the rear-view mirror.

He pays her a compliment. Her hand brushes against his in the elevator.

“Laters,” she says with a wink when they part ways. And he watches her hips sway, heart in his throat, as she walks down the hotel corridor to meet Enzo.

Theirs is a friendship built on things unsaid, on averted gazes, on lingering nothings. It’s fog. Unsubstantial, yet it can swallow the whole city.

Maybe it’s a test. A trap. Set up by Enzo himself. It’s plausible. More than. But he’s pretending to be another man, so he might as well pretend he’s the kind of man Belle could be attracted to.

Every day, he awaits the request to fetch her with a knot in his stomach: dread or eagerness, he can’t tell.

He drives slower. Stops fully at every sign. Offers to wait if she has errands along the way.

Now, when he stops in front of her fake house, he kills the engine. They share a cigarette and companionable silence.

He never invites her to sit at the front. He needs the physical barrier between them. To keep rumours at bay. To control his own yearnings.

It’s one of those days, when it seems winter will never end, that she tests the boundary. She leans forward, elbows atop the back of the front seat, chin rested on her hands. Very close. He keeps his eyes on the road and his hands firmly on the wheel, but he’s acutely aware of her proximity. Her perfume isn’t light or floral or sweet, it’s tangy, raw cocoa and smoke, linens tangled in heated bodies. It’s raspy like a tongue along his scruffy jaw. He swallows thickly, squirms on his seat. She brushes something off his shoulder. Her fingers linger on the worn out cotton. The first human touch in months that’s not a shove or a jab. His blood fizzles.

“Sit back, it’s not safe,” he says.

“If you really cared about my safety, you wouldn’t take me to him.”

Her anger isn’t directed at him. It’s unwarranted, but it cuts him deep. He halts the car on the side of the road.

“You only have ask,” he says, eyes trained on the windshield.

He’d lie for her. He knows it with blinding clarity.

“But if I didn’t go, then I wouldn’t see you,” she says.

He arm dangles over, on his side of the car. An offer. An overture.

His heart pounds in a way it hasn’t since the trenches. A flush creeps up his neck. He brushes the back of his fingers down her skin, from elbow wrist. He grazes her palm. Their little fingers wrap around each other.

If he drove away, who would find them?

“Emmett,” she says softly.

She doesn’t even know his real name. None of this is real, he tells himself. Then why is it so hard to let go of her hand?

“Maybe another time,” she says. “Keep driving or we’ll be in trouble.”

He hates himself for pressing on the gas pedal.

She leans over every time now. Always near, forgiving.

Hardy’s superiours at the Metropolitan police think she’s valuable. She might know something, sensitive information overheard or confessed by Enzo in a moment of post-orgasmic weakness. “Befriend her,” they say. He doesn’t want to use her, doesn’t want her mixed up in this. The car is parked in front of the house that’s not her house. She smokes the last of their shared cigarette and flicks it out the window. Normally, she’d leave now, but she stays. She runs a finger under his collar, as if smoothing it. He slopes down, rests his cheek on top of the seat, mirroring her position. She’s so close, his vision blurs, but he’s too tired to make his eyes focus.

“I won’t see you next week,” she says.

“Why not? What’s wrong?”

“I mean, ‘cause Enzo will be in Bristol.”

“Right.”

“It’s like a vacation for me.”

“What will you do?”

She shrugs. He wonders if she’ll propose they meet. There’s a moment of silence, a pregnant pause, a crossroad of possibilities.

“Anyway.” She chuckles nervously. “Maybe I’ll learn to cook.”

“Lord have mercy.”

It’s only the next day, when the effect of her touch and smile has somewhat faded, that he realizes the significance of her words. If Enzo is in Bristol, he may be trying to create an alliance with the gang up there. He should warn the police right away. Yet he waits. Waits for someone else to mention the trip, but no one at his level seems aware the boss is out of town.

The next day, he’s asked to fetch Belle, and he thinks it’s too late to alert his colleagues now. But when she comes out of the hotel, her hair and lipstick are intact. She got paid to sit by herself in an empty hotel room. Obviously, they’re doing everything to keep the illusion the big boss is still in London. If word gets out, they’ll narrow down the list of suspects real fast.

Unaware of Hardy’s inner turmoil, Belle is in a great mood. As soon as they round the corner, out of sight, she wraps her arms around his neck from behind. Her breath brushes his ear when she says, “take the scenic route”.

Driving by Hyde Park is the closest thing to a scenic route London has to offer. They stay in the car, they can’t risk meeting someone they know. He drives around three times, and, through the window, they watch springtime London blooming to life: sheep graze on the lawn, children run, pushing old tires with sticks, young female factory workers stroll arm-in-arm.

Belle’s hand slips inside his shirt. His heart drums under her touch. He nearly crashes into another car.

He drives until the sun descends on the horizon.

It’s the happiest he’s been in a long time, but the dilemma eats at him. An alliance between London and Bristol means a wider network of criminal activities— wider than ever before— and more innocent bystanders caught in that web. But they’re faceless, anonymous bystanders whereas Belle is so very real. She’s flesh and bones and loveliness. Her life would be on the line. His too, he realizes belatedly.

In the end, his conscience wins. He’s a cop, not a crook. He sends the superintendent a coded message and waits with fear in his heart.

The next week, he’s sent to fetch Belle again. As usual, he escorts her to the fourth floor, but he keep his hand poised near the butt of his revolver. This time, Enzo shows up to welcome her.

“Hello, Babydoll.”

She jumps in his arms. “Honeybear! I missed you.”

Hardy grits his teeth and ignores the pang in his heart. He’d have preferred a bullet.

Rather than go back to the pub that doubles as the gang’s HQ as he usually would, he stays nearby. He sits in the service stairwell, attentive to any sound out of the ordinary.

A few hours later, she comes out, and one glance from her tells him she’s unwell. A tense silence fills the elevator, it’s not the place to talk.

In the car, she rests her forehead against the window and follows the path of raindrops with her finger.

Did they question her? Threaten her?

“You alright?”

“Yeah… I liked my little vacation.”

“What happened?”

“Enzo was pissed. Something happened, and he thought I’d said something I shouldn’t.”

Hardy gripped the wheel so tight his knuckles turned white.

“I didn’t even know what he was talking about. What could I have said?”

He hates the hint of doubt that creeps up his spine. The paranoid voice that asks: does she really not remember what she revealed about Bristol or is it a test?

“After a while, he believed me. I think. But then he wasn’t… as nice as usual.” Her voice is thin, vulnerable.

Anger flares in Hardy’s chest, and he punches the car horn. “Did he hurt you?”

“Not exactly. But I’m just, really—” She rubs up and down her own arms. “Can I come to the front?”

He parks the car in the shadow of a tall oak tree. She’s out and back in in a flash.

His whole body is still taut with anger. She slides closer on the seat, and it’s restraint now tensing his muscles.

“It’s okay, Emmett, don’t be shy.”

It’s not shyness, it’s survival. Full of hesitation, he stares at her. She’s so beautiful, and she needs him. A lump rises in his throat.

“Can I get a cuddle? Please.”

He thinks of the hand-grenades he used during the war.

He breathes out slowly, and opens his arms. He’s pulled the pin, there’s no going back now.

Seven seconds before the explosion.

She snuggles up to him, head on his chest, arm around his torso. His blood sparks to life.

He tightens his embrace around her. Holds on to her. Protects her.

His thawed heart swells against his ribs. Warmth spreads out from his chest.

Belle tilts her head back, gaze searching his face. She gently wipes the hair off his eyes and cups his cheek.
