Nearly all of our faults are more forgivable than the means we use to hide them.

Absence extinguishes small passions and increases great ones, as the wind will blow out a candle, and blow in a fire.
François de La Rochefoucauld, from ‘Reflections; or Sentences and Moral Maxims’, tr. J.W. Willis Bund & J. Hain Friswell

The luminous cropping up of the invisible, the elegant if eerie symmetry of coincidence, could not be “proven” systematically. The fact of love cannot be explained, and the luminosity of art cannot be systematized either. The fact of their existence imposes itself upon the receptive mind; where there is no receptivity, they in effect cease to exist. Behind La Rochefoucauld’s little gem of cynicism, “There are people who would never have loved had they never heard of love,” lies the truth that the belief fathers the capacity.
— PAUL WALDO SCHWARTZ ⚜️ Art and the Occult, (1975)
