Mum, Great news I have a new favourite parent! . OK, just to keep you up to date. I have, since early January been my darlings 3rd favourite parent. After starting the Year of Less but Better, where I'm embracing minimalism and having a No Spend Year. This has meant a clamp down on wasteful spending and an overall reduction in sweeties, hot chocolates and lollipops in our house . This has not been well received by the cherubs. . Needless to say, when there are other sources of such goodies to be tapped, your truly becomes less important as a target of affection. . For the last 4 weeks, my dear husband has been firmly in 1st place due to his penchant for hot chocolate. My mum has been a close 2nd due to the ample sweet press in her kitchen. Whereas I have been holding onto 3rd position purely out of luck as there had been no one to usurp me. . That is, until now. . I had a meeting and my good friend collected my girl from school. When I picked her that evening, she ambushed me as I walked in. A face flush with excitement, she announces with much delight… . Great news mum, I have a new favorite parent. . I was delighted, this was the moment! After all the false alarms of late, this was it, the favorite parent slot was mine again. She was finally going to take me back into the fold and place me in my rightful position. . I moved to hug her but had to pause as she gushed, it's your friend mom, she's my favourite! She gave me cake! Really nice cake too. . You are in 4th place now and that's a good thing as you are not in 3rd place anymore, you didn’t like being there. 20. MALTA Michela - “Chameleon” SemiFinal 2, #11

As you’ve read in my previous update, I’ve booted Austria and Australia for being question marks and Spain for being in a genre I don’t enjoy. So what if I told you there’s an entry who combines the “flaws” of both Aus’es and Spain into one whole and... makes it work? Meet Malta!

ENTRY ANALYSIS

Every since its release “Chameleon” has proved it to be a smash hit in the Eurofan community and it’s not hard to see why: As you can expect from a Symphonix production, “Chameleon” is ~Trash-Chique~: it has your typical quotable fanwanking lyrics wrapped into a fun fastfood package. 

I mostly like the song for its pluck though. This bit:

is fucking brilliant. The scrappiness encompasses so much more than just the song itself, I initially had “Chameleon” lower on my list but every time I sat myself down to write this entry, I realized that I actually liked it way more than I thought I did. It just has a ~General Fighting Spirit~ that I can’t but help to respect, you know?

Having said all of that though, I still... kind of don’t like the song overall. :eek:. The rhythm is a bit... Crazy? as in ‘Crazy’ by Stanka Franka, that is. It sounds ~cool ‘n’ fierce ‘n’ funkeh~ but it’s just, you know, sassy in a nondescript way which is good!!! ...but others do it better. Plus, that drop... is something I may get used to one day, but right now you’ll have to accept this song just ain’t the one for me.

Qualification Odds: Borderline +

ANOTHER FRUSTRATINGLY DIFFICULT SONG TO PREDICT UGH UGH UGHHHHH. 😫😫😫😫🤢🤮😷

*Sigh*, FINE 😒  “Chameleon” is another one of those high risk/high reward entries which can swing wildly between “Smash Hit” and “Fan Flop” except the gulf is even wider than usual: At its ‘worst’, “Chameleon” will be an absolutey carcrash and at its ‘best’ it could become The Token Quirky Fourthplacer (like Loic, Blanche, Maggie Burger, etc), with some margin to finish in the middle with elements of either.

As for which outcome we’re getting, no bloody clue. The problem is that Malta desperately need to reinvent themselves in order to have a chance: They’ve hired the same people that made “Euphoria” and “1944″ happen and that’s already good IF (IF!!!) they get the staging right. 

The problem I see though is yet again the televote: EVERYTHING points towards a pro-jury strategy to me, which, good that you know your niche, but girl look where that left them in previous years - Fun fact: Malta have been in the jury top 10 EVERY YEAR since 2010, but have only been in the televoter top 10 twice. TWICE!! (and Ira probably wouldn’t have been had she not closed the NF 😂). It’s an uphill struggle, but if Michela does manage to ensnare televotes, she’s poised to do very well indeed.

Projected placement: 4th-13th in the SemiFinal. If she qualifies, 4th-15th in the Grand Final
