Diving in Maumere: The Ultimate Diving Guide
If you love diving, then Maumere is the best place to be if you want to have the dive sites to yourself, unlike Bali, where you now see more tourists underwater than fish. Diving in aumere has lots of features that make it a great place for a wonderful diving experience. The proximity of the deepest ocean crack at 9000 meters gives room for plenty of big fish activity. It offers a stunning diving experience with turtles, sharks, and you might see whales if you visit in November.
1. Getting to Maumere
From Bali, getting to Maumere won’t take more than two hours, we have the new direct flights from Denpasar to thank for that. Garuda is the best airline to go with, they are very reliable and permit luggage weight of about 20kg. Getting to the dive resort from there will take just 20 minutes by car.
2. Where to stay when diving Maumere
Maumere is a remote location, if you are expecting a luxurious accommodation, strike that out. But that does not mean you won’t enjoy your stay in this relatively undeveloped place. Ankermi happy dive – a simple resort by to the sea – is the best place when diving in Maumere. They offer different kinds of bungalows like backpacker rooms with shared bathrooms, and luxurious bungalows (also called lilyponds bungalows). Besides the beautiful sea view surrounded by palm trees and fish ponds offered by this resort, those luxurious bungalows also have AC and hot water located on the side of the resort, offering a private sea view terrace with lounge chairs.
It is advisable to book three to four months in advance due to the popularity of this resort in high season, especially if you are interested in the staying in the lilyponds bungalows. The beach in front of the resort is not good for swimming because it is rocky nature. There is a little beachfront café where most people visit after diving; you can hang out there and share your diving stories at the end of the day. We saw two large yachts anchored in the bay during our visit, so this is a nice option for yacht owners.
The hosts are fantastic, Ankermi and his wife Claudia usually hang out with guests during sunsets to share fascinating local stories. I strongly advise you shun the review of this resort on tripadvisor, do not believe the bad reviews you see there. This place is simple but delightful.
2. Diving in Maumere
From the resort to most dive sites takes about 60 minutes. The area is not that crowded, we were there for 5 days, and we did not come across any other dive boats.
Ankermi diving is so cool, even though their noisy motorboat is not big enough and feels overcrowded when full. If you are expecting a luxury dive trip, you will be disappointed. Stay focused on the diving and go with the flow if you want to enjoy this dive trip.
You should also watch out for the many walls around the islands, covered in large stag coral tables and beautiful gorgonian fans (sea fans), and entwined with different varieties of anemone flowers and neon coloured Alcyonacea (soft corals), and lots of reef fish you can think of.
Despite its healthy coral, the water visibility can be limited but you can’t compare it to the 40 meters visibility that you usually get in places like Alor or Komodo. Diving in Maumere is really good, but I feel the water visibility might prevent Maumere from becoming one of the world’s best diving locations as it is a bit harder to get clear pictures.
One of the dive sites, Babi island has a unique surface interval that is a paradisiac beach. I don’t usually wish for longer surface intervals but I could have stayed on the Babi island beach for the whole day! During our stay, we saw dolphins on a daily basis; they enjoy swimming with the boat. An amazing experience even if we did not get to see them underwater.
3. Dive sites near Maumere
Check out the description below about the site’s features.
The Channel
This is a slop linking down to a sandy bottom, it is framed with big gorgonians, coral gardens, and sponges. You are more likely to see ribbon eels, ghost pipefish, lionfish and frogfish in this area. If you are lucky, you also get to look at hunting hammerheads and eagle rays in this area due to the strong current. The flow of current through this 2km wide channel is pretty strong, so this dive site is not for amateurs but experienced divers. You can down to the deeper part through the coral garden scattered with sand; this area features a giant mountain of sand with sea fans and coral blocks. You can observe the amazing underwater scene in this area (about 30 meters deep) featuring marble rays, eagle rays, tunas and mackerels on the sand surface. Continue flowing with the current until you arrive at the stunning coral garden.
The Crack
The crack was formed by an earthquake that ripped the reef open in 1992, lots of little fish and corals love to hide in this spot. It is located about 20 metres in a reef beneath the water, the length of the 70 centimetres crack is about 30 meters. You will find a steep wall filled with corals as the follow the crack. You may be lucky to see rays and sharks if you look down the crack.
Majella’s Ledge
This is a nice spot to view nurse sharks, reef sharks, and hammerheads – if you are that lucky. This deep ledge is located at 35m.
Marajagong
This region has a touch of everything you can ever imagine, it is a steep wall with different jutting platforms. Reach for the wall down the slope to the platform; it’s about 14m. This fantastic spot features different varieties of reef fish, lobster, frogfish, sharks, sea turtles, nudibranchs, octopus and colourful corals, this spot is well known for schooling tuna and mackerel.
Babi Island wall
Pulau Babi, also known as the pig island faces the Flores Sea and is bordered at the north end with coral reef. You will find a small tidal flat where two villages were built if you go down south. In 1992, a tsunami – with waves topped at 5.6 meters – hit Pulau Babi and destroyed the villages found on the flat sandy land. About 263 out of the 1093 people living in the location lost their lives to the tsunami. The villages had to be abandoned, and reconstruction was not permitted when the region was declared too risky to be inhabited. You will only find makeshift bamboo huts in the location currently, there are used once in a while for fishing.
You will find the barrier reef tappers at the southern end of the island, you will see a lot of crevices and crack with corals in the shallow. The Palau Babi wall is a nice drop off with lots of corals, and relaxing on the beach in-between the dives is amazing; we were opportune to see a few turtles and sharks.
Muck dive in front of the resort
There are different suitable dive sites on the coast for muck diving. You get to see frogfishes, mimic octopus as well as nudibranchs. Another unique feature about this dive site is that it features lots of endemic species. According to reports, Rudie Kuiter – a photographer – has catalogued over 1200 fish species in Maumere Bay alone, including species new to science.
5. Diving in Maumere: best time to go
Maumere also experiences rainy seasons. It is advisable you plan your diving in Maumere between April to October if you want to avoid the rainy season and enjoy a wonder, calm sea, and stunning visibility during your dives. The high season falls between July and August. It is advisable you book in advance to secure a spot due to the limited boat and accommodation capacity. You can also visit during November and December periods; you are more likely to see whales during this period. If you are a fan of large sharks, visit during April and May, these are the best periods to see a whale shark.
6. Other activities besides diving in Maumere: the Kelimutu volcano
An interesting thing about your visit to Maumere is that you get to do other things besides diving. You can visit the Kelimutu volcano in Kelimutu. Get the most out of your visit to Maumere by visiting this three coloured lake; it’s only 3 hours away from Maumere. If you plan on spending your whole day here, the trip is worth it. The hike is also easy; it will not take more than 30 minutes. The 3-colored lakes are unique for natural phenomenon. The constant changing of colours and different varieties of colour in the lake makes it so beautiful. The local inhabitants in this region see the lake as a place where the departed souls reside. They believe that the god of the afterlife, Mae, as well as the people who died, will sit at the base of the lakes according to their good deeds in life. Thus, the names of the lake are connected to it. When translated, they represent the souls of the people, the spirits of young people, and the spirits of soothsayers. The dramatic and unpredictable change in the lakes’ colour makes it one of the natural phenomena one needs to see; colour changes from blue or green to red or black. Furthermore, the steep road to the lakes is precarious, making it more mystical and mysterious. There is no strong evidence to describe what is responsible for the changes in colour, but scientist believes that volcanic gas activities are responsible for the chemical reactions between the natural minerals in the lakes.
Maumere is only a short direct flight away from Kupang and Komodo that both offer really good diving. Read my review of Kupang diving and Komodo diving. There is also interesting tribes encounters in West Timor and the possiblility to cruise Komodo water or stay in Luxury at Komodo latest luxury resort.

1. Great Barrier Reef:
The Great Barrier Reef, known as a World Heritage Site and is the only living structure visible from space, shimmers beneath the crystal-clear Coral Sea. It serves as a calming coral embrace for the Whitsunday Islands, protecting the waters from strong ocean surges and fostering the best conditions for sailing, cruising, snorkelling, and scuba diving.
The reef supports an incredible diversity of marine life, making it one of the richest ecosystems in the world. The reef is home to sea snakes, dugongs, giant clams, turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks, and rays, in addition to more than 1,625 fish species and 1,400 varieties of coral.
2. Whitehaven Beach:
Whitehaven, one of Australia’s most stunning beaches, is a magnificent seven-kilometre stretch of white silica sand and turquoise water. The largest island in the group and a popular destination for day visits and picnics, Whitsunday Island is home to this immaculate beach.
On walking pathways, you can explore the beach and the island. Hill Inlet, a charming nook at the beach’s northern end, is a highlight where ebbing tides swirl the crystal-clear water and blind white sand into marbled chaos of colour. It appears to be an abstract watercolour painting from above. Retreat Whitsunday
3. Sailing Trips & Cruises:
A sailing or fast boat is the most incredible way to fully experience the magnificence of this island paradise. As a result, you can visit more than one island in a single day. Numerous excursions include pit breaks where you may go snorkelling on the coral, hike in Whitsunday National Park, and use resort amenities.
You can ride a fast catamaran to the shore on the Whitehaven Beach and Hamilton Island Cruise. The nine-hour tour visits the beach’s highlights before continuing to Hamilton Island, where you can climb the trails, peruse the shops, and interact up close with Australian creatures at WILD LIFE Hamilton Island.
Hamilton Island:
You are looking forward to indulging in various activities and top attractions; Hamilton Island is the only Whitsunday island with a commercial airport. You can find a broader range of luxury accommodations from the luxury Qualia Resort on Hamilton’s northern tip to palm-shaded bungalows, family-friendly apartments, yacht club villas, and much more.
These are some of the things to do in Whitsundays, so pack your bags and escape yourself from the tensions & worries of life.
Since there are various activities to indulge in, water sports are one of the main attractions. Tourists can find several options to pick from while there is a thing to do some thrilling & exciting. Therefore, the trips to the Great barrier Reef and white heaven beaches are the central highlands of this island. Finding a waterfront Whitsunday retreat is excellent to live & experience the islands’ beauty.

5 Top Caribbean Destinations for Solo Travelers
5 Top Caribbean Destinations for Solo Travelers, a Guest Post by Jean Sullivan*
There’s nothing like having a trip to an island destination in the Caribbean. The clear water, the beautiful sand, and the warm temperature make it the ideal place to enjoy yourself. The Caribbean has many places that make fulfilling destinations. Here are 5 top Caribbean destinations for solo travelers.
Jamaica
You can never go wrong with a trip to Jamdown. It’s one of the best Caribbean destinations because of the great scenery, food, and rum. If you’re looking for a night out, you should try Rick’s Cafe and The Jungle.
You’ll love Negril’s nightlife with incredible music and great-looking people with whom you can vibe as you start to enjoy the island rhythm. If you’re a bachelor or bachelorette looking for that last trip with your gang before you tie the knot, Montego Bay may be the right place for you. There are spas and resorts where you can relax and unwind before you head out for the night.
Also, you can reserve a spot at the beach to get your party on with your friends. Whether you’re looking for that bonding moment before you hang up your hat or want to rock out by yourself, this is the perfect place in Jamaica for all of that. Enjoy all that Jamdown has to offer.
Sometimes it’s great to just get away from home and have your time to breathe a bit.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
It’s simply paradise. The coral reefs, natural feel of the land, and all-inclusive resorts make it a bachelor or bachelorette’s dream. Not to mention, you won’t feel like you’re paying an arm and a leg to go there.
While it’s always great to go here during the summer, March has the Punta Cana carnival. It’s quite amazing with all the great cultural events that take place in the city. If you like an adults-only vacation, you should consider going to CHIC, which has seven restaurants.
Also, the two swim-up bars are perfect for some mid-day action by having a few drinks, eating some appetizers, and getting into the water. Additionally, you can have a private area reserved that makes it feel as if you’re on South Beach. Enjoy the mermaid glass walls to keep you dry as you enjoy underwater.
If you still want a more natural break, Hoyo Azul is perfect because of the limestone. It makes an incredible swimming hole that feels like ancient inhabitants used this as a luxury.
You can always go mainstream by heading to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino here. Have some fun at the slots and enjoy the golf carts.
From the rich culture and people, you’ll love your time in Punta Cana.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
From the more tourist spots to Old San Juan, there’s a lot of adventure in this great place in Puerto Rico AKA La Isla. The capital of Puerto Rico is still a hot spot loved by many for the variety you get on the island.
It’s not just about beaches and water. Visit Casa Bacardi to go on a rum tour. You’ll get your bottle of rum and get in some tasting.
Even if you’re single, this is an excellent place to meet others because you get a history of the distillation process and more. If you want more of a romantic feel, it’s a good idea to check out the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico.
Here you’ll find some of the most exclusive and luxurious pieces the island has to offer. You’ll get a mix of boricua, Latin American, and Caribbean art. If you want to do something a bit different to start your day, this is a more relaxing place to do it.
Of course, you can check out El San Juan Hotel or other music venues, hot spots, and whatever else you need for an incredible night out on the town. There are plenty of places to groove and get your sip on for a fun evening out.
Turks and Caicos
If swimming is your thing, you can’t get any better than the bodies of water in this beautiful paradise. Turks and Caicos have the third-biggest barrier reef on the planet. The miles go on for swimmable water, and you’ll see some amazing sea life you don’t get to witness very often.
From the ivory sands to the turquoise water, you’ll love the beaches. Also, you can find a secluded beach to give your space and make it feel like a private tropical destination. If you want to get some shopping done, you’ll find everything from jewelry to souvenirs at Grand Turk.
After swimming with the fish in the barrier reef, you can relax by heading to Turk’s Head Brewery. Try some delicious local beers made for sipping and enjoying your time alone or with friends. From lager, amber ale, IPA, and light, you have different choices that you can try for your palate.
Beer lovers? Be sure to book a tour where you can see the process, try some free samples, and get your brew. The cost is $15, which includes an hour’s tour and four beer samples. Make sure you book ahead of time because they’re still following Covid-19 regulations to keep everyone safe.
Virgin Islands
It’s a party-central place with beautiful scenery from the wild and plant life. You’ll enjoy the diversity there as it brings in different cultures from American, British, and island lifestyles. If you’re a history buff, check out St. John’s National Park and Annaberg Plantation to get a feel of what colonial life was like back on the island.
If you’re looking to go during the low season, before the fall hits, go right before hurricane season starts in September. Since it’s a U.S. territory, you don’t have to worry about getting a passport.
You can never go wrong with the local cuisine from the conch fritters, callaloo, and potato stuffing. The food is also fresh, which just adds to its richness and flavor.
It’s a sporty place as well. You can enjoy some activities, such as skydiving, swimming, sailing, and more. Many Olympians come here and test the waters out because it just feels great.
Whether you’re in a St. John villa destination to get some privacy or going to Negril in Jamaica to take in a more hustle and bustle approach, the Caribbean is always an ideal choice for a luxurious getaway. Find a place that you can call your home away from home. It could be the solitude you’re looking for while you’re still single.

It was constructed in Singapore and opened in 1988 as the John Brewer Floating Hotel, It was positioned on the John Brewer Reef, in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. The seven-storey structure had nearly 200 rooms, nightclub, bars, restaurants, a helipad, and a tennis court. However, the hotel soon began to struggle financially.
It operated as the Four Seasons Barrier Reef Resort for a year until it was relocated to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 1989, operating as the Saigon Floating Hotel. It was moored in the Saigon River, near the Tran Hung Dao Statue, from 1989 to 1997. Colloquially known as "The Floater", it was a popular nightspot, but again ran into financial difficulties.
The hotel was bought by North Korea and taken to the Mount Kumgang Tourist Region which opened in 1998 on the border between North and South Korea. Australia declassified: 5 great alternative places
It is no secret that Australia is home to heaps of well-known landmarks, both natural and man-made. The continent has been on the charm offensive with its World Heritage Sites, and tempting the globe with its laid-back lifestyle and three-hour-long brunches. But famous attractions and delicious grub aren’t the only reason why so many visitors go back to the land Down Under – here are some hidden gems for new and returning visitors seeking unforgettable adventures.
Alternative dining experience – Eyre Peninsula’s seafood trail, Port Augusta, SA
Forget holes-in-the-wall, private kitchens or fine dining and go on a seafood tasting safari that lets you sample the best of what South Australia has to offer. Starting from Port Augusta, the journey takes you through many gourmet layovers along the coast. Get your hands wet and catch your lunch of tender blue crabs, feast on freshly harvested oysters on a farm tour at Coffin Bay, and dine your heart out at the many restaurants in the area. Travellers looking for an extended safari should check out the charming bed and breakfasts along the trail.
Alternative reef – Ningaloo Reef, Exmouth, WA
Image Source: Luxury Lodges of Australia
Ningaloo Reef is often overshadowed by its massive cousin, the Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s most talked about living organism. Hop on a short flight from Perth to Exmouth and hit the resorts located right at the fringe of this untouched 260km-long structure. Only metres away from the shore, expect to walk over to the reef without any snorkelling gear! Capture it all on Instagram (make sure your phone is waterproof) as you dive with whale sharks congregating in their natural habitat or catch the migrating humpback whales that skirt the beautiful coastline.
Alternative art museum – The White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney, NSW
Image Source: White Rabbit Gallery Facebook
Looking for more fun and quirk in your art? Look beyond the usual suspects like the Museum of Contemporary Art or MONA and head to the White Rabbit Gallery, a private art museum featuring only 21st-century Chinese contemporary art by collector Judith Neilson. Be intrigued by over 2000 works contained in a whimsical arena or take a breather from sensory overload and have a cup of tea at the museum’s teahouse. Best part of all? Admission is free!
Alternative national park – Kakadu National Park, NT
Australia’s largest nature reserve, the Kakadu National Park offers breathtaking hiking trails and vistas that easily rival those of the Grampians or Blue Mountains. Hire a four-wheel drive to explore isolated and inaccessible sanctuaries like the Gunlom Falls and the Ikoymarrwa Rock Pool, or jump on a cruise tour of the Yellow Water Wetlands that changes with the six seasons, constantly transforming the landscape. Camping tip: Stay at the bespoke Flash Camp in Cooinda during the dry season instead of roughing it out in a tent to get closer to nature!
Alternative drive – The East Coast, Tasmania
Image Source: Friendly Beaches Lodge/Great Walks of Australia
Equally as awe-inspiring as the Great Ocean Road, the tranquil Tasmanian East Coast is a treasure trove of stunning bays, wildlife, pristine beaches and lookout points that dot the island’s east coast. Break your journey along this 300km stretch from Hobart to St Helens and wander around pitstops like the picturesque Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires or stop for a scrumptious treat at the Darlington Vineyard.

Our work looks good up at the #uuflb #watercommunion ceremony yesterday! Thanks to our pastor, Reverend Lee Marie Sanchez, (pictured), for her appreciation and inclusion of my image. It was a special honor to have our work featured on the Orders of Service and I was invited to light our #chalice during the service's welcome portion and share an amazing 20" x 40" giant print of this stunning capture of Mount Otemanu on the main island in Bora Bora. Bora Bora is a 30.55 km2 (12 sq mi) island group in the Leeward group in the western part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of the French Republic in the Pacific Ocean. The main island, located about 230 kilometres (143 miles) northwest of Papeete, Tahiti, Bora Bora is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the highest point at 727 metres (2,385 feet). This is one of my favorite all-time shots in my favorite destination to date. The photo was taken while I was standing on the edge of the dock overlooking the magnificent turquoise waters surrounding the Four Seasons private beach. The Four Seasons Resort is located on Point Matira in Bora Bora, which has been voted #3 best beach in the world’ by U.S. News in 2019, behind Fiji and its neighbor, Tahiti. #borabora #mountotemanu #frenchpolynesia #southpacific #shotsbydubbs #photography #travelphotography #photographerlife #photophilosopher #turquoiseocean #blueocean #clouds #island #dock #sailboats #pointmatira #fourseasonsborabora #fourseasonsboraboraresort (at The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2MhL93nvu1/?igshid=1plgah9d2hw3u

What Are The Main Attractions Of Whitsundays?
Apart from the great barrier reef, the Whitsundays include seventy-four tropical islands with pearly beaches and well-known resorts. The Whitsundays islands stretch within the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia. Most islands surround dense rainforests, white-sand beaches, and hiking trails. The most popular things in the Whitsundays islands are fishing, snorkelling, sailing, scuba diving, and beach basking.
If you are looking for luxury island resorts, you can pick anyone to stay in the Whitsundays. As there are various options, including luxury eco-lodges, boutique resorts, and beachside campsites, you select any of your favourite ones. You can even choose luxury eco-lodges, back-to-nature bungalows, and exquisite boutique resorts to stay and benefit from the space. Additionally, the major attractions of Whitsundays are experiencing adventures through the seaplane, luxury yachts, and much more. You can book accommodations at the Waterfront Whitsunday retreat and experience the height of enjoyment.
You can visit the Great Barrier Reef in the dry season between May and October. This time of year is perfect as the humidity is low & visibility is better. We have described more about the attractions Whitsundays, which are;
Whitehaven, one of Australia's most stunning beaches, is a magnificent seven-kilometre stretch of white silica sand and turquoise water. The largest island in the group and a popular destination for day visits and picnics, Whitsunday Island is home to this immaculate beach.
On walking pathways, you can explore the beach and the island. Hill Inlet, a charming nook at the beach's northern end, is a highlight where ebbing tides swirl the crystal-clear water and blind white sand into marbled chaos of colour.
The nine-hour tour visits the beach's highlights before continuing to Hamilton Island, where you can climb the trails, peruse the shops, and interact up close with Australian creatures at WILD LIFE Hamilton Island.
4. Hamilton Island:
You are looking forward to indulging in various activities and top attractions; Hamilton Island is the only Whitsunday island with a commercial airport. You can find a broader range of luxury accommodations from the luxury Qualia Resort on Hamilton's northern tip to palm-shaded bungalows, family-friendly apartments, yacht club villas, and much more.
Finding a waterfront Whitsunday retreat is excellent to live & experience the islands' beauty.

New Post has been published on https://travelonlinetips.com/8-of-the-best-family-restaurants-and-cafes-in-cairns-and-port-douglas-2/
8 of the best family restaurants and cafes in Cairns and Port Douglas
The highlight reel from your family trip to the tropical end of Queensland may resemble a Disney box-office hit as you find Nemo on the Great Barrier Reef and swing through ancient rainforests like mini-Tarzans.
But you’ll need a separate foodie wish list (or your own genie in a lamp) to keep the family fuelled in between all the fun – and this list of family-friendly restaurants and cafes in Cairns and Port Douglas will be your best bet.
Muddy’s Cafe, Cairns
In between all the splashing at Cairns’ free lagoon, grab your famished mermaids and mermen and dry off at Muddy’s Cafe (right next door to the baby water play area and fenced playground).
You won’t need to whip out King Triton’s staff to encourage the kids to finish their meals with choices like crispy chicken slider, cheeseburger slider, and dagwood dog and chips. Keep up the tropical vibes with a strawberry, watermelon, rockmelon and pineapple juice or a mango, berry, sorbet and pineapple juice smoothie.
Open: 7 days from 7am till 8pm. Where: 174 Esplanade, Cairns. Hot tip: While you’re at it, make a splash at these other swimming spots.
Wharf One, Cairns
You’ll get a lot more than the bare necessities for you and your jungle cubs at Wharf One.
Mornings are best started with Wharf One’s dirty monkey: a banana smoothie with a sneaky shot of coffee. The little people’s brekkie menu offers up boiled eggs and soldiers, poached eggs and baked beans on toast, organic banana and Nutella toastie or French toast with banana and natural honey.
Before heading back to the jungle, try a fancy babyccino with chocolate powder, sprinkles, marshmallow and a cookie.
Open: 7 days from 7am till 5pm. Where: Wharf Street, Cairns. Hot tip: Once you’ve had your fill, head to the Fig Tree playground less than a one-minute walk away.
Prawn Star, Cairns
Unlike the Lost Boys, there’s no need to imagine your food when you board the Prawn Star! Take in the salty air as you chow down on the freshest prawns, mud crabs, cooked bugs, oysters and sashimi in the comfort of a floating restaurant at the Cairns Marina.
If your Lost Boys (and girls) are still developing their sea legs, avoid the plank and make your order a takeaway. You’ll find loads of tables and grassed areas nearby to set up a picnic (and possibly a food fight).
Open: 7 days from 11am till 9pm. Where: Marlin Marina, E Finger, Berth 31, Pier Point Road, Cairns. Hot tip: Mums and dads can order a bargain $5 beer or wine to wash the seafood down.
Ellis Bar and Grill, Ellis Beach
The menu items at Ellis Beach Bar and Grill don’t need an ‘EAT ME’ stamp on them. Big Alices can start the day with the brekkie bowl with cauliflower rice, BBQ mushroom, kale, kimchi, poached egg, chilli jam and guacamole; while little Alices can order mini pancakes or ham and cheese toastie.
Lunch and dinner highlights include a crab and calamari burger or smoked BBQ beef brisket. Kids will be left with a cheeky Cheshire cat-sized grin after gulping down calamari rings, battered fish, chicken nuggets or cheeseburger with salad and chips on the side.
Even if you’re late for a very important date, make sure you leave enough time to wander through the palm trees along Ellis Beach. Alice would recommend it.
Open: 7 days from 8am till 8pm. Where: Lot 13 Captain Cook Highway, Ellis Beach. Hot tip: They flip free pancakes for kids each Saturday from 8am till 11:30am.
Paradise Palms, Kewarra Beach
Even the grumpy old Mr Fredrickson from Up would be happy (okay, maybe not happy, but he might avoid his usual frown) if his balloon travelling house made it to Paradise Palms rather than Paradise Falls.
Either go for crispy pizzas all ’round – they come in kids’ size too – or order classics like burgers, seafood basket, chicken parmigiana or pepper steak; then pavlova with passionfruit if you want your dessert to be inspired by your surroundings.
Eager Wilderness Explorers can wander around the play village complete with super-slippery slide and climbing frame, play on the mini soccer field, or discuss recent badge wins in the Queenslander-style cubby. There’s even a fenced mini-adventure playground for under fives right near the restaurant terrace.
Open: Monday to Thursday 7am till 5pm, Friday to Sunday 7am till 9pm. Where: Paradise Palms Drive, Kewarra Beach. Hot tip: They also offer gluten-free bases for their pizzas if you need to cater to sensitive tums.
The Beach Shack, Kewarra Beach
The heart of Te Fiti might be in Kewarra Beach, so there shouldn’t be any need to leave this island (we mean, beach) for a long time, especially when the crew at The Beach Shack stock their menus with delights for the whole family.
Wednesday’s menu is rammed with tapas and slurpy oysters, so get ready to say, “I’m going to love you in my belly!”
And just like Maui, the shapeshifting demigod, your little voyagers can get up to mischief in the sand while you sip cocktails and take in the beach vibes.
Open: Wednesday 5pm till 8:30pm, Friday 5pm till 9:30pm and Sunday 3pm till 8:30pm. Where: 80 Kewarra Street, Kewarra Beach Resort and Spa, Kewarra Beach. Hot tip: The Beach Shack is open from May to December. Like the rest of us, they don’t like their food soggy, so the Beach Shack is closed during the wet season from January until April.
2Fish, Port Douglas
Forget a spoonful of sugar and grab a bucket of tasty prawns at 2Fish, the practically perfect seafood restaurant. Their menu is spot on with underwater delights like bug tails, crab dumplings and salmon chowder. Fishy kids’ taste buds will be high fiving over the grilled or battered fish or calamari served with chips and salad.
Before their grub arrives, the kids can test their crafty skills and draw on the paper tablecloth or get amongst the activity bag fun (note: no need to raid your Mary Poppins’ sized bag for dinner distractions this time!).
Open: 7 days, lunch from midday and dinner from 5:30pm. Where: Shop 11, Coconut Grove Complex, 56 Macrossan St, Port Douglas. Hot tip: Mary’s spoonful of sugar serving suggestion may not be enough. Sweet-toothed friends may drool over their dessert menu, too.
Port Douglas Surf Club, Port Douglas
The chefs at the Port Douglas Surf Club may have had a little advice from our French furry friend and extraordinary chef, Remy. They’ve kept some old faithfuls on the menu, but they’ve also mixed it up with coral trout tacos, taro chips and salsa, steamed pork buns and tempura prawn sushi.
Book a table on the big open deck and take in the Four Mile Beach views. Ahhhhh. The kids won’t need any encouragement to finish their meals as there’s an epic enclosed playground right next door to the restaurant.
Open: 7 days from midday till 8:30pm. Where: Corner of Mowbray and the Esplanade, Port Douglas. Hot tip: Walk off your meals along Four Mile Beach and grab some family holiday snaps along the palm tree-lined strip.
Want more ideas for kid-friendly food and babyccino options? Here’s a few to keep up your sleeve:
Waffle On, 64A Shields Street, Cairns | Pretty sure they’ll smell even better than Shrek’s mate Donkey’s waffles.
Gelocchio, 9/93 The Esplanade, Cairns | Just like Mr Geppetto remembers it.
Jaffle Head, 39 Lake Street, Cairns | The waft of melted cheese and precisely cooked toasty goodness would be enough to wake Sleeping Beauty herself.
Rusty’s Market, 57-89 Grafton Street, Cairns | Better known for their fresh fruit and veg and good value market cafe, Aladdin and Abu wouldn’t need to employ their 5-finger discount ways at Rusty’s.
Brewhaha Espresso Bar, 141 Barnard Drive, Mount Sheridan | The perfect spot for some hard-working dwarfs to caffeinate before a long day of work.
Apex Milk Bar, 24 Hoare Street, Manunda | One bite and you’ll be taken back to Radiator Springs where burgers and shakes are served with Flo-level smile and sass.
Mondo’s on the Waterfront, 34 The Esplanade, Cairns | You’ll be able to let it go with Mondo’s good vibes and marina locale.
Palm Cove Surf Club, 135 Williams Esplanade, Palm Cove | Eat your chips before the seagulls from Nemo start swooping and squawking, “Mine! Mine! Mine!”
Before you cut loose in the tropics, ask the locals for their tips. Adventure Mumma is all over the best things to do with kids in Cairns.
And just in case you need more inspiration, here’s a round-up of the 20 best things to do with kids in Tropical North Queensland.
No holding back now. Where’s your go-to family restaurant or cafe in or around Cairns?

At last, Bahamas sunshine…
At last, Bahamas sunshine…

New Plymouth Town, Green Turtle Cay © SV Crystal Blues
Crystal Blues finally escaped the freezing conditions and weather bombs of the US East Coast, clearing from Palm Beach and heading east across the Gulf Stream to the shallow banks that make up most of the Bahamas Island group. In eight hours we were across the stream and moved on to the banks, and eight hours later we were at Great Sale Cay, anchored in three meters of water for a peaceful evening.
We cleared customs and immigration at Grand Cay, and sheltered there for a few days, before heading East and South around the top of the Abacos island chain.
Three days ago we anchored at Green Turtle Cay and settled for a while, enjoying the (finally) calm weather and the friendly village atmosphere in New Plymouth town.
This is a community that dates back to the 1780’s, when British loyalists departed the United States after the war of independence and resettled here. The English language is different here, and the folks are proud of their heritage.
The waters are clear, and there is a decent tourism industry based around visiting boats and resorts. The famous Green Turtle Club provides marina, restaurant and bar services, competing with the nearby Bluff House to woo visiting boats and crews.
Perfectly positioned on the sea of Abaco, between the outer reef and Great Abaco Island, this is one of a string of barrier islands that really make you think about staying forever.
Of course this is winter, the low season, and the marinas are generally fairly empty, though there are plenty of cruising boats around, principally from the USA with a few from Canada. Winter weather brings a series of northerly and north easterly blows to this region, each of which seems to last four or five days. This morning, with another 35 knot blow on the way, we departed Green Turtle and moved further south to Great Guana Cay, where we will shelter for the next five days.
