Press Release
Portland, Oregon. Earth. (March 8, 2023)- Ecliptic Brewing is excited to launch the next beer in their Special Release Series: Super Phaser Hazy Double IPA. Shipping March 15th in 16-ounce cans and draft, this beer is a souped-up version of their fan-favorite, All The Time Series Phaser Hazy IPA.
Super Phaser Hazy Double IPA is brewed with pale malt and Imperial Juice Yeast. Flaked oats and wheat help create a soft mouthfeel, while extra hop doses add incredible aroma and juicy hop flavor. This punched-up version of the company’s original flagship hazy IPA features Azacca, Mosaic, El Dorado, and Citra hops and clocks in at 8% ABV.
“I thought it would be a fun project this year to take Phaser Hazy IPA to the double IPA level,” says Owner and Brewmaster, John Harris. “We added an extra 1.5 pounds of hops per barrel in the dry hop to really elevate the aroma and flavor. As the beer’s label copy says, ‘we've given her all we’ve got’ – which is a fun nod to Star Trek.”
Super Phaser Hazy Double IPA will be released in 16-ounce cans and draft throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network on March 15th. Visit Ecliptic’s website for up-to-date details on this release and potential release events.
Super Phaser Hazy Double IPA "WE'VE GIVEN HER ALL WE'VE GOT CAPTAIN!!" Super Phaser Hazy Double IPA takes our fan-favorite Phaser to the extreme. With a higher ABV and extra doses of Azacca, Mosaic, El Dorado and Citra, this recipe dials up the juicy hop flavor to an absolutely stunning degree.

Quirky, cool and authentic – that’s Astoria!
Quirky, cool and authentic – that’s Astoria!
If you’re a movie buff, put Astoria, Oregon on your list. This Columbia River port town, where grit meets hip, has often been referred to as “Hollywood North.”  Though it was “The Goonies,” the cult classic that put the city on the map back in 1985, there have been a number of other pictures filmed in the area over the years. The list includes such notables as “Kindergarten Cop,” “Short Circuit,”

Evermore
Pairing: Ginny Weasley x Reader
Summary:  And if you're ever tired of being known for who you know, you know, you'll always know me
Warnings: none
Word Count: 943
You strolled along Diagon Alley, a parcel containing your new robes under your arms. It was rare that you came down here, not usually one for crowds, but you were in desperate need of a new cloak. You passed by the Weasley twin’s joke shop and gave George a small wave when he spotted you through the window. You hadn’t spoken much these last few years, yet he still greeted his kid sister’s old best friend with a warm smile. You continued down the cobblestone streets, making your way to the Leaky Cauldron so you could floo home, but a poster caught your eye.
In the window of Quality Quidditch Supplies rested a picture with familiar red hair and freckled skin. The picture moved, showcasing her brilliant smile. It was a picture of Ginny Weasley, quidditch star, wizarding world icon, and someone that you used to know.
Once upon a time, Ginny had been your best friend. Nights spent together under blanket forts and days spent running around the school grounds. Times hadn’t been great back then, the war brewing and tensions rising. Ginny had experienced her fair share of tragedies, the diary and the consequences of her family joining the order, but the two of you always made the best of the dark times. You found light in each other’s company, reveling in the happiness that filled you both when you were together. But you hadn’t spoken in years. After the war and after graduation she made something of herself while you stayed behind and watched. Over the years you slowly lost touch, your lifestyles so wildly different that it was hard to even be compatible any more. You watched through stories in the newspaper as she went out and found new friends, replacing you with others who matched her celebrity status.
Despite the distance, you still thought of her sometimes. Of her fiery red hair and her burning wit. She had always been a force to be reckoned with, off and on the quidditch pitch, and it was no surprise that she had become as successful as she was. Sometimes, late at night, you wondered if she thought of you too.
You tore your eyes away from her picture, scanning the words across the poster.
Special Guest Speaker: Ginny Weasley, seeker for the Holyhead Harpies.
Your breath caught in your throat as you scanned the words, realizing that not only was her picture in the window, she was on the other side of the glass. You looked into the shop and spotted a crowd of fans gathered around a podium, seemingly waiting for her. You internally fought with yourself, attempting to decide if you wanted to see her or not. Your heart yearned to just catch a glimpse of the woman who had understood you so deeply in your youth, but your brain wanted to shield yourself. What if she wasn’t the same? What if she didn’t want to see you?
As you silently mulled over your dilemma you heard a cheer from inside. Your head snapped up to see that Ginny had taken her place on the podium. She smiled widely and you were immediately transported back to your days at Hogwarts. Nights sneaking into the kitchens, days spent lazily by the black lake, and ditching the yule ball to run through the courtyard in your fancy dresses. Your heart was beating wildly against your chest, every adolescent feeling for the girl racing back. It was no surprise that you had loved her as more than a friend when you were fifteen, how could you not? And now years later, it appeared that you still did.
You tentatively pushed open the door of the shop, taking a deep breath as you did. Your mind was racing with a million questions. Was she the same as she had been back then? Would she want you here? Would she even recognize you?
You slipped into the crowd, standing near the back and observing how she spoke enthusiastically to the crowd, her passion shining through her brown eyes and flushed cheeks. She was just as beautiful as you remembered. You watched as she waved around her hands as she spoke, a habit that you had noticed in your third year. You couldn’t help but smile. Something about being in the same room as her, even after all these years, made butterflies erupt in your stomach and the corners of your mouth quirk up involuntarily.
“Sorry for rambling,” she said with a smile as she finished answering the question, “Any other questions?” she asked. She scanned the room, looking for raised hands. Finally, her gaze rested on you. She paused and you saw a million thoughts pass through her eyes. You gave her a soft and earnest smile, hoping that it didn’t appear too sad.
Ginny took a deep breath before her face broke out into a grin that was impossibly wide. She seemed lost in your stare for a moment, ignoring the hands waving in the air. You felt your smile go wide as well, your chest swelling with affection. Her trance was finally broken when one of the moderators on stage tapped her shoulder. She blinked in surprise as if just remembering where she was and what she was doing. She called on a random person and began answering their question, but every few words her glace would wander towards you again, a small smile gracing her lips every time her eyes met yours. Her wandering gaze gave you hope that she was the same soul you’d known all of those years ago. And maybe, just maybe, she was finally ready to know you again.

‱ Richard Winters
Richard Davis Winters, was an officer of the United States Army and a decorated war veteran. He is best known for having commanded Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division, during World War II.
Winters was born in New Holland, Pennsylvania, to Richard and Edith Winters on January 21st, 1918. The family soon moved to nearby Ephrata, and then to Lancaster when he was eight years old. He graduated from Lancaster Boys High School in 1937 and attended Franklin and Marshall College. At Franklin and Marshall, Winters was a member of the Upsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and participated in intramural football and basketball. He had to give up wrestling, his favorite sport, and most of his social activities for his studies and the part-time jobs that paid his way through college. He graduated in 1941 with a B.S in Economics. He obtained the highest academic standing in the business college. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army to fulfill a one-year requirement of service, although he later wrote in his memoirs that at the time he "had no desire to get into the war" and that he had volunteered so that he would not be drafted later.
Winters enlisted in the United States Army on August 25th, 1941. In September, he underwent basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina. He remained at Camp Croft to help train draftees and other volunteers, while the rest of his battalion was deployed to Panama. In April 1942, four months after the United States entered World War II, he was selected to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia. There he became friends with Lewis Nixon, with whom he served throughout the war. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry after graduating from OCS on July 2nd, 1942. During his officer training, Winters decided to join the parachute infantry, part of the U.S. Army's new airborne forces. Upon completing training, he returned to Camp Croft to train another class of draftees as there were no positions available in the paratroopers at that time. After five weeks, he received orders to join the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (506th PIR) at Camp Toccoa in Georgia. Winters arrived at Toccoa in mid-August 1942 and was assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th PIR, which later became better known as "Easy Company" in accordance with the contemporaneous Joint Army/Navy Phonetic Alphabet. Serving under First Lieutenant Herbert Sobel, Winters was made platoon leader of 2nd Platoon, earning a promotion to first lieutenant in October 1942, and made acting company executive officer, although this was not made official until May 1943. The training at Toccoa was very tough. Of the 500 officers who had volunteered, only 148 completed the course; of 5,000 enlisted volunteers, only 1,800 were ultimately selected for duty as paratroopers.
On June 10th, 1943, after more tactical training at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, the 506th PIR was attached to Major General William Lee's 101st "Screaming Eagles" Airborne Division. Later in the year, they embarked on the Samaria, and arrived in Liverpool on September 15th, 1943. They proceeded to Aldbourne, Wiltshire, where they began intense training for the Allied invasion of Europe planned for spring 1944. In November and December 1943, while Easy Company was at Aldbourne, the tension that had been brewing between Winters and Sobel came to a head. For some time, Winters had privately held concerns over Sobel's ability to lead the company in combat. Many of the enlisted men in the company had come to respect Winters for his competence and had also developed their own concerns about Sobel's leadership. Winters later said that he never wanted to compete with Sobel for command of Easy Company; still, Sobel attempted to bring Winters up on trumped-up charges for "failure to carry out a lawful order". Feeling that his punishment was unjust, Winters requested that the charge be reviewed by court-martial. After Winters' punishment was set aside by the battalion commander, Major Robert L. Strayer, Sobel brought Winters up on another charge the following day. During the investigation, Winters was transferred to the Headquarters Company and appointed as the battalion mess officer. Following this, though Winters tried to talk them out of it, a number of the company's non commissioned officers (NCOs) gave the regimental commander, Colonel Sink, an ultimatum: either Sobel be replaced, or they would surrender their stripes. Sink was not impressed and several of the NCOs were subsequently demoted and/or transferred out of the company. Nevertheless, Sink realized that something had to be done and decided to transfer Sobel out of Easy Company, giving him command of a new parachute training school at Chilton Foliat. Winters' court-martial was set aside and he returned to Easy Company as leader of 1st Platoon. Winters later said he felt that despite his differences with Sobel, at least part of Easy Company's success had been due to Sobel's strenuous training and high expectations.
In February 1944, First Lieutenant Thomas Meehan was given command of Easy Company. Meehan remained in command of the company until the invasion of Normandy, when at about 1:15 a.m. on June 6th, 1944, D-Day, the C-47 Skytrain transporting the company Headquarters Section was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire, killing everyone on board. Winters jumped that night and landed safely near Sainte-MĂšre-Église. Losing his weapon during the drop, he nevertheless oriented himself, assembled several paratroopers, including members of the 82nd Airborne Division, and proceeded toward the unit's objective near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. With Meehan's fate unknown, Winters became the de facto commanding officer (CO) of Easy Company, which he remained for the duration of the Normandy campaign. Later that day, Winters led an attack that destroyed a battery of German 105mm howitzers, which were firing onto the causeways that served as the principal exits from Utah Beach. The Americans estimated that the guns were defended by about a platoon of 50 German troops, while Winters had 13 men. This action south of the village of Le Grand-Chemin, would later be called the BrĂ©court Manor Assault. winters was successful in destroying the battery, in addition Winters also obtained a map that showed German gun emplacements near Utah Beach. On July 1th, 1944, Winters was told that he had been promoted to captain. The next day, he was presented with the Distinguished Service Cross by General Omar Bradley, then the commander of the U.S. First Army. Shortly after, the 506th Parachute Infantry was withdrawn from France and returned to Aldbourne, England, for reorganization.
In September 1944, the 506th PIR parachuted into the Netherlands, near the village of Son, north of Eindhoven, as part of Operation Market Garden, a combined airborne and armored operation. On October 5th, 1944, a German force attacked the 2nd Battalion's flank and threatened to break through the American lines. At the same time, four men in an Easy Company patrol were wounded. Returning to the headquarters, they reported that they had encountered a large group of Germans at a crossroads about 1,300 yards (1,200 m) to the east of the company command post. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Winters took one squad from 1st Platoon, and moved off toward the crossroads, where they observed a German machine gun firing to the south, toward the battalion headquarters, from a long distance. After surveying the position, Winters led the squad in an assault on the gun crew. Soon after taking the position, the squad took fire from a German position opposite them. Estimating that this position was held by at least a platoon, Winters called for reinforcements from the rest of the 1st Platoon and led them in a successful assault. Later it was discovered there had been at least 300 Germans. On October 9th, Winters became the battalion executive officer (XO), following the death of the battalion's former XO, Major Oliver Horton. Although this position was normally held by a major, Winters filled it as a captain. The 101st Airborne Division was withdrawn to France soon afterward. On December 16th, 1944, German forces launched a counter-offensive against the Western Allies in Belgium, commencing the Battle of the Bulge. The 101st Airborne Division was trucked to the Bastogne area two days later. Still serving as XO of the 2nd Battalion, Winters helped defend the line northeast of Bastogne near the town of Foy. The entire 101st Airborne and elements of the 10th Armored Division battled about 15 German divisions, supported by heavy artillery and armor, for nearly a week before General George Patton's U.S. Third Army broke through the German lines surrounding Bastogne, reopening ground supply lines. After being relieved, the 2nd Battalion attacked Foy on January 9th, 1945. On March 8th, 1945, the 2nd Battalion was moved to Haguenau in Alsace, after which Winters was promoted to major, and Winters took over as acting commander of the 2nd Battalion.
In April, the battalion carried out defensive duties along the Rhine before deploying to Bavaria later in the month. In early May, the 101st Airborne Division received orders to capture Berchtesgaden. The 2nd Battalion set out from the town of Thalem through streams of surrendering German soldiers and reached the alpine retreat at noon on May 5th, 1945. Three days later, the war in Europe ended. After the end of hostilities, Winters remained in Europe as the process of occupation and demobilization began. Even though he had enough points to return to the United States, he was told that he was needed in Germany. Later, he was offered a regular (non-reserve) commission, but declined it. He finally embarked from Marseille aboard the Wooster Victory on November 4th, 1945. Winters was recommended for the Medal of Honor for his leadership at Brécourt Manor, but instead received the U.S. Army's second-highest award for combat valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. After leaving the Army, Winters worked for his close wartime friend Captain Lewis Nixon at Nixon's family business, Nixon Nitration Works of Edison, New Jersey, rising to become general manager in 1950. On May 16th, 1948, Winters married Ethel Estoppey. In June 1951, Winters was recalled to active duty in the Army during the Korean War. He was ordered to join the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, but he was given six months to report and in this time he traveled to Washington, D.C., to speak to General Anthony McAuliffe, in the hope that he could convince the Army not to send him to Korea. Winters unfortunately was desired for his service and then reported to Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he was assigned as a regimental planning and training officer.
While at Fort Dix, Winters became disillusioned with his job, finding that he had little enthusiasm for training officers who lacked discipline and did not attend their scheduled classes. As a result, he volunteered to attend Ranger School, where he passed and became a Ranger. He then received orders to deploy to Korea and traveled to Seattle, where, during pre-deployment administration, he was offered the option of resigning his commission, which he accepted. Winters was discharged from the Army and became a production supervisor at a plastics adhesive business in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 1951, he and his wife bought a small farm where later they built a home and raised two children. In 1972, Winters went into business for himself, starting his own company and selling animal feed products to farmers throughout Pennsylvania. He retired in 1997. During the 1990s, Winters was featured in a number of books and television series about his experiences and those of the men in Easy Company. Despite the many accolades he had received, Winters remained humble about his service, most notably due to the popular miniseries Band of Brothers. During the interview segment of the miniseries Band of Brothers, Winters quoted a passage from a letter he received from Sergeant Myron "Mike" Ranney, "I cherish the memories of a question my grandson asked me the other day when he said, 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' Grandpa said 'No...but I served in a company of heroes'." Winters died on January 2nd, 2011, at an assisted living facility in Campbelltown, Pennsylvania, 19 days before his 93rd birthday. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease for several years. Winters was buried in a private funeral service, which was held on January 8th, 2011. His wife Ethel died in 2012, at age 89.

This is the [incomplete] story of Oregon beer, part 2
This is the second part of the story of Oregon beer.
Read This is the [incomplete] story of Oregon beer, part 1
This talk is based on an Oregon Encyclopedia article I wrote.
Last February I gave a talk at the Oregon Brewers Guild dinner. None of us knew what was ahead for public health, the economy, and social change. I love giving talks and will certainly repurpose this one, but for now, here are the slides and script with a few additions to reflect the pandemic shut down and updated screenshots from the beer guides.

In the spring of 1980, Charles and Shirley Coury, who had owned a vineyard for 13 years in Forest Grove, opened a brewery Portland. They called it Cartwright Brewing Company (Cartwright was Shirley’s maiden name) and their first offering was 150 cases of a mild, English-style ale called Cartwright Portland.
Coury found century-old beer beer-making recipes in “beautiful, old brewing textbooks” in the stacks of the Multnomah County Library. He also made Legal Lager and Deliverance Ale, the latter an attempt to raise money to keep the business open. The beer was nearly $1 per bottle, which was more than customers expected to pay; but the price point wasn’t the issue, the inconsistency was. Although Cartwright closed in 1981, it roused consumers’ appetite for a locally made, small-batch beer, but it also inspired the brewers who came a few years later.
Tumblr media
The mid to late 1980s were an exciting time for Oregon Beer.
Richard and Nancy Ponzi, also winemakers, opened Columbia River Brewing (later called BridgePort) and brothers Kurt and Rob opened Widmer Brewing (they added “Brothers” to the company’s name a few years later). Karl Ockert, a recent UC Davis graduate with a degree in winemaking, joined the Ponzis summer 1983 at their vineyard. He and Ponzi were interested in beer and began planning a brewery and portfolio of ales. One became their namesake: BridgePort Ale. Others followed: the award-winning BridgePort India Pale Ale, Blue Heron Pale Ale (named after Portland's official city bird), and a barley wine named "Old Knucklehead." BridgePort was acquired by The Gambrinus Company, owned by Carlos Alvarez, in 1995. Brewery operations ceased in February 2019, and the brew pub closed the next month.
Kurt Widmer enjoyed homebrewing and full-flavored beer. After seeing Chuck Coury’s brewery he knew he had a chance at success. His brother quit his job, his father came out of retirement, and his sister in Germany joined as a partner. Their first beer was a Dusseldorf-style Alt and in 1986, they introduced their "Hefeweizen" to America. Rather than a traditional Hefeweizen characterized by distinctive yeast flavors, this was an unfiltered version of their existing wheat beer (Weizenbier) and used Cascade hops. They served it with a slice of lemon to accentuate the citrus flavors of the Cascade hops. In 2007, Redhook Ale Brewery and Widmer Brothers merged to form a new company called Craft Brewers Alliance, which was later renamed as Craft Brew Alliance. In January 2019, Widmer Brothers Brewing closed its taproom after 22 years. In November, 2019 Anheuser-Busch purchased the remainder of CBA.
Fred Bowman started homebrewing after receiving a “How To” guide from high school friend Jim Goodwin, who was also a talented jazz musician. They brewed test batches in Bowman’s basement and were soon joined by high school friend Art Larrance. In 1984, Bowman and Larrance had a franchise agreement for Portland Brewing Company to produce Bert Grant’s Scottish Ale and Russian Imperial Stout and had leased the 58-year-old Holly Farms creamery building in Portland, but they needed more money before they could open. The two raised $125,000 with a common stock offering and leased equipment from Imperial Leading in Lake Oswego. “Mac” MacTarnahan invested $25,000 and in 1992 they named MacTarnahan’s Pale Ale after him; it became the Portland Brewing’s flagship brew. By 1998 the company was in financial trouble, and that year MacTarnahan bought $3.5 million in debt in exchange for stock. Portland Brewing Company merged with Saxer Brewing Company of Lake Oswego in 2000. In 2004, MacTarnahan, then 88 years old, sold the company to Pyramid Breweries of Seattle. In 2008, Pyramid was acquired by Magic Hat Brewing Company, which was subsequently bought by North American Breweries and then by the Costa Rican company Florida Ice & Farm Company.
McMenamins is famous for brewpubs, music, and hotels. Many of their locations are in rehabilitated historical properties and at last nine are on the National Register of Historic Places. McMenamins was founded by brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin, who grew up in northeast Portland, Oregon. Their influence began in 1974 with the opening of Produce Row CafĂ©, which soon made a name as one of Portland's first bars devoted to quality imports and craft beer. Don Younger’s Horse Brass Pub, which opened in 1976, was also an essential component in increasing consumer access and awareness of imported and local beer, as well as provided a community space to share beer experiences. In 1985, the McMenamins opened Oregon’s first brewpub in the Southwest Portland neighborhood of Hillsdale with brew master Carlos Santos. They didn’t adhere to a style and their beers were often unsettling to brewing traditionalists; they used ingredients like blackberries, apples, blueberries, spices, and candy bars. Their first theater pub, and the first in Oregon, was the Mission Theater & Pub (1987). The company then entered the broader hospitality business starting in 1990, when they converted a 74-acre site (that at one time served as the Multnomah County Poor Farm) into McMenamins Edgefield.
Tumblr media
One major event that impacted the trajectory of the beer industry in Oregon in the 1980s was legislation that married production and sales.
Before 1985, brewpubs were essentially illegal in Oregon. The state’s post-Prohibition laws said alcohol manufacture and retail could not occur on the same premises; instead, breweries had to work with a third-party distributor to add taps and sell their product. Bowman, Larrance, the Ponzis, the Widmers, and the McMenamin were instrumental in lobbying to legalize the marriage of production and on-site sales.
In early 1985 House Bill 2284 proposed a brewery-public house license that would allow the brewing and selling of malt beverages at the same location; however, wholesale beer suppliers feared new brewpubs would cut into business and launched a counter campaign. On May 9, 1985 HB 2284 was tabled and died. The second bill, SB 813, proposed a bed and breakfast license to permit the sale of beer and wine, as well as a brewery-public house license for manufacturers producing less than 25,000 barrels of malt beverage. On July 13, 1985, Governor Vic Atiyeh signed Senate Bill 813, the “Brewpub Bill,” into law. It allowed brewers to make and sell beer on the same premises, key for increasing revenue and gaining new customers.
Although growth over the next 10 years was slow, throughout the 1980s, four other breweries opened in other parts of the state: Full Sail Brewing (Hood River) and Oregon Trail Brewery (Corvallis) in 1987, and Deschutes Brewery (Bend) and Rogue Ales (originally in Ashland) in 1988. Portland has always had the largest concentration of breweries and Central Oregon has seen exceptional growth, but breweries have opened in new areas to attract diverse consumers. Examples include Calapooia (1993, Albany), Cascade Lakes Brewing Company (1994, Redmond), Terminal Gravity (1996, Enterprise), Barley Brown’s (1998, Baker City), Walkabout Brewing (1997, Medford), Ninkasi (2006, Eugene), Fort George (2007, Astoria), and Block 15 (2008, Corvallis).
Tumblr media
A maturing industry needed skilled brewers and since its establishment in 1995, Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program in the Food Science and Technology department has led brewer education. Homebrew clubs and organizations around Oregon have also provided training for future professionals. Founded in Portland in 1979, the Oregon Brew Crew is one of the oldest and largest home brewing clubs in the United States; it is appropriate that their meetings are held at F.H. Steinbart, a homebrew shop founded in 1918 and the oldest in the country. Other pioneering clubs include the Heart of the Valley Homebrewers (1982, Corvallis) and the Cascade Brewers Society (1982, Eugene).
The Oregon Brewers Guild fills an important role as a non-profit advocate for the state’s breweries; founded in 1992, it is one of the nation's oldest craft brewer associations. Two other important organizations to support increased gender equity in brewing started in Oregon. The Pink Boots Society was founded in 2007 by Teri Fahrendorf, former brewmaster at Steelhead Brewing in Eugene, as a professional organization to support women in the brewing industries. In 2011, Pink Boots members created Barley’s Angels as an educational community for consumers; it became its own organization in 2012.
In addition to more breweries to choose from, consumers had other ways to engage with beer. The Oregon Homebrew Festival, established in 1982, is the Pacific Northwest’s oldest homebrew competition; others followed, including the KLCC Brewfest Homebrew Competition and SheBrew. The Oregon Brewers Festival (established 1988) is one of the nation’s longest running and largest craft beer festivals; others throughout the state include the Portland Craft Beer Festival, the Festival of Dark Arts in Astoria, Bend Brewfest, and Mt. Angel's Oktoberfest.
Tumblr media
The increasing popularity of homebrewing and accessibility of imported beers certainly had an impact on the preferences and palates of consumers, as did writing about beer in the public press. Fred Eckhardt was a well-known advocate, critic, educator, mentor, and historian, and his written work on beer and brewing encouraged generations of people to think about beer in new ways. Inspired by a 1972 visit to Anchor Steam Brewery, Eckhardt became an avid proponent of tasteful, complex craft brews. He urged people to focus on flavor, style, and experience in the Oregonian, and also wrote regular articles in national industry publications like Celebrator Beer News and All About Beer. He rose to prominence with his 1970 A Treatise on Lager Beers, a guide to homebrewing and the evolution of lager beer, and 1989 The Essentials of Beer Style.
The Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives acquired his papers in 2015, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to preserve and provide access to materials that document such important moments in this history.
In more recent years, as print publications have folded, blogs, podcasts, and news aggregate sites have dominated Oregon beer news and information. Reporting about the beer industry has changed a lot in the past year, and I am grateful that there are still web sites like New School Beer and Brewpublic, as well as notable journalists and authors like Jeff Alworth, Denny Conn, and John Abernathy reporting on local issues.

Electronic, paper, oral histories? I’m interested in collecting all the things that document the industry. In the last year we’ve added collections from the Oregon Brewers Guild, Widmer Brothers Brewing, the Pink Boots Society and Barleys Angels.
We have Fred Eckhardt’s papers, as well as Denny Conns and a collection of research materials from Pete Dunlop. Other collections include Master Brewers of America District Northwest Chapter Records, the Oregon Hop Growers Association, and scanned collections from both Fred Bowman and Art Larrance.
Find a list of all collections and oral histories on the OHBA guide.

Despite some of you readers who think I live a life of leisure (snicker) and am travelling all the time, I really don’t. Sure, I have trips, but they are spaced apart. My last extensive time away from town was in August.* So, it was time for Emee and I to get away. Where to? Originally we thought about going up to the San Juan Islands but originally we thought we had less time** so we decided to head out to Long Beach, WA again. It’s about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Portland, close enough that a weekend can be made out of it, far enough to feel like a getaway. Oh yeah, there would be the beach!
We left on the evening of Friday October 26, after I got off work. We got to Long Beach around 9 PM, arriving at the Adrift Hotel where we’d spend three nights. We actually had a view of the ocean from our room! We chose the Adrift not only because of its proximity to the ocean, but because of the Pickled Fish, its restaurant which makes delicious New Haven-style pizzas! (We knew this from the last time we visited the area in July.)
Saturday was mostly spent lounging around the hotel. We made a quick cruise to the beach before the rain moved in for the day. Late October is a crapshoot for weather on the Northwest Coast, but the weather mostly stayed decent throughout the trip with Saturday afternoon into evening being the exception. Oh, and Emee got a massage from the on-site spa. Bonus!
Sunday had better weather, a mix of sun and passing showers. This time we decided to do a bit more exploring. We didn’t bring bikes, knowing that the hotel had a fleet of no-charge rental bikes.*** These are your basic no-frills “beach cruisers” ubiquitous to beach towns. Most of them were from a brand called Firmstrong, a company I wasn’t familiar with, but are a brand specializing in entry to mid-level cruisers. I have no issue with single-speed beach cruisers in situations like this, but it would have been nice had there been a few extras like a bell, front basket, and oh, fenders, and if the fleet would be oh, maintained a bit. Both our bikes had chains that look like they last saw lube during the Carter Administration. But with a few adjustments, they were okay for a bit of cruising.
We first hit the North Jetty Brewing about a mile from the hotel, on the main drag on the Long Beach Peninsula. And it was good timing, as a good shower passed on through as we were enjoying the brews. After the liquid sustenance, we pressed south to around the entrance of Cape Disappointment State Park. We intersected the Discovery Trail. a paved bike path that runs from the town of Ilwaco, through the park, and them north to Long Beach. We followed the trail south for a bit until it turned inland at Beard’s Hollow, a former bay now turned into lowland marsh. We found a nice side trail down to the beach, right at the point where the rocky headland of Cape Disappointment meets the Pacific Ocean. We watched the setting sun for a bit, then headed north back to the hotel.
And oh man, was it a workout with those bikes! Emee’s Strava said it was just about eight miles but it felt longer. The wide saddles and not well kept bikes did not help. As I said, I have no problems with a nice heavy “beach cruiser” (technically my Schwinn Heavy Duti falls into this category), but hotel bikes are hotel bikes. Next time we’ll probably bring our own bikes along.
Anyways, we rounded out our evening with a sit-down Mexican dinner at a restaurant that was a bit
further than we thought it was.**** We passed through the heart of Long Beach. During the summer, this touristy downtown would be hopping, but on a rainy Sunday night in late October, it had the feeling of a ghost town. We did pass by a few drinking/eating establishments which looked to be occupied by the locals, and weirdly enough the arcade was open.
On Monday we got in the Emeemobile and left Long Beach. Our destination for the day would be Astoria, about 20 miles south and across the oh-so-wide Columbia River. We would be spending the night at the lovely Commodore Hotel, an old hostelry that has been converted in the last decade to something like a boutique hotel. The prices are pretty reasonable, and most importantly, it’s in the heart of downtown. While Astoria is no big city (population 10,000), it does stretch for a few miles west-east along the river. So getting something central would mean being able to just walk to the various attractions easily.
We first did a pit stop at Buoy Brewing right on the river. We had some lovely beer while looking out on the river at all the big ships waiting to move up to ports upriver (like Longview or Portland) or cross the dangerous Columbia Bar out to sea. Oh yeah, we also listened to the barking of California Sea Lions, which are all along the waterfront. There’s actually a glass panel on the floor to see all the Sea Lions underneath the building!
For dinner, we hit up Fort George Brewing to have some delicious pizza along with the beer. We had a good view of the river, and all the ships were lit up like Christmas trees.
And like that, the trip was over. After a good breakfast on Tuesday morning, we drove back to Portland. We wished we had more time, though. Another day in Astoria would mean more time to explore, like check out the Maritime Museum and go get the great view from Astoria Column. Thankfully, it’s not that far away!
*Okay, to some of you, having a trip only two months ago is extravagant. My apologies.
**The San Juan Islands are just far enough away, about 4 1/2 hours by car to the ferry terminal (longer by train), plus the logistics and added time of the ferry rides.
***We also borrowed them on Saturday for a short trip.
****We could have drove, but wanted to park the car for a couple days. And the rental bikes didn’t have lights.
A weekend on the coast Despite some of you readers who think I live a life of leisure (snicker) and am travelling

Archaeology Roadshow 2018
I spent Saturday at my 4th PSU Archaeology Roadshow, and this year I brought Anna (lead student worker in my department AND the Deschutes Brewing Archivist).
Tumblr media
We had lots of fun things to share, including beer, hops, some yummy crunchy barley, and of course a bunch of books. Fortunately, Corvallis Homebrew Supply had all the ingredients we needed...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yes, basically the weather was perfect.
Tumblr media
I did get asked “why are you here??” a couple of times, and I reminded people that beer has deep roots in ancient history. Here are a couple of quick articles in case you doubt me!
Beer in Ancient Egypt.
The Beer Archaeologist.
The Archaeology of Beer.
The dawn of beer remains elusive in archaeological record.
But we didn’t serve anything that was actually ancient. We did have a range of different styles that were significant to the story of beer in Oregon for different reasons.
Hair of the Dog’s Fred: We house the Fred Eckhardt Papers and I did an oral history with Eckhardt in 2014, so this was a bit of a no-brainer to add to the line-up, but it is also indicative of how connected the community of brewers, journalists, and consumers are. Give these a read and you’ll see what I mean.
http://www.newschoolbeer.com/2017/04/hair-dog-brewing-blends-history-time.html
https://hairofthedog.com/beers/
https://hairofthedog.com/beers/Vintage_Fred.asp
http://ithinkaboutbeer.com/2012/07/02/hair-of-the-dog-brewing-fred-batch-86/
And here’s some info on Alan Sprints and the brewery.
https://www.beeradvocate.com/articles/3881/alan-sprints/
 https://brookstonbeerbulletin.com/beer-birthday-alan-sprints/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_of_the_Dog_Brewing_Company
Tumblr media
This Heater Allen lager was a nice nod to a traditional style, but one that people at the event noted wasn’t exactly what they’d expect from a lawnmower lager. Learn more about the beers and the company in these articles:

https://drinks.seriouseats.com/2014/02/guide-german-beer-styles-differences-between-pilsner-bock-marzen-hefeweizen-kolsch-beer-history-essentials.html
I also did oral histories with both Lisa and Rick Allen, so make sure to check those out if you want to know more about them.
Tumblr media
Our nod to the new was Riverbend’s Man-Go-Fluff Yourself, which was the beer with the most “wow, I don’t usually like beer like this” (meaning fruit, IPA, trending, canned, etc).
http://riverbendbrewing.com/brewery/
https://beerandbrewing.com/got-milk-examining-hazy-ipa/
Tumblr media
Look right first, because these links are info about the Fort George Suicide Squeeze, which is a regular beer that started as a 3-Way Collaboration recipe.
https://fortgeorgebrewery.com/about/
http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2010/02/fort_george_brewery_taking_ove.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_George_Brewery
https://fortgeorgebrewery.com/3-way-ipa/
https://fortgeorgebrewery.com/beer/suicide-squeeze/
Then look left, because that’s the Upland Sour Ales PearPawSterous beer! Upland is a brewery in Bloomington Indiana.
Tumblr media
Upland Sour Ales and Cascade Brewing teamed up to make PearPawSterous. This brew included paw paws from Indiana and pears from Oregon; these fruits were swapped and the same recipe was used, but these beers were noticeably different. It was a super way to show how water, place, etc make a difference.
Here’s info about the beer:

Here’s info about the fruits:

Want to know more about Art Larrance and Cascade Brewing? Listen to my recent oral history.
Tumblr media
Anna brought Black Butte Porter and Pacific Wonderland Lager from Deschutes, which were crowd pleasers, but also nice “anchors” for the tasting.
I’ve done a BUNCH of interviews with Deschutes folks, past and present.
Tumblr media
And finally, beers from a brewer I am interviewing next week!

The Norblad Lobby
Tumblr media
Independently owned and thoughtfully restored, the Norblad was built in 1923 and is the longest running hotel in Astoria. This minimal 17 room hotel is intentionally curated with value in mind. Each room features carefully chosen finishes, with high-quality pieces throughout while keeping the feel laid-back and comfortable.
The Norblad Hotel is truly in the heart of downtown astoria – situated within one-block of:
Fort George brewery Blue Scorcher Cafe Reach Break Brewing Nourish Juice Mai Tong Thai Bridge & Tunnel Bottleshop Pilot House Distillery
Reveille Ciderworks Astoria Co-op & Grocery Malama Day Spa The Hot Box Bbq Doe & Arrow Liberty Theater Street 14 Coffee
While at the Norblad, you are never more than a short walk from the best that Astoria has to offer. www.norbladhotel.com/ ======================================================== HIST. NAME: Miller-Jeffers Building
COMMON NAME: Miller-Jeffers Building ADDRESS: 443,475 Fourteenth Street 13599 -1389 Duane Street 1350 Exchange Street CITY: Astoria, 97103 ORIGINAL USE: hotel, retail, office PRESENT USE [1998]: retail ARCHITECT: John E. Wicks BUILDER: John Slotte Company THEME: commerce & urban dev STYLE: Late Commercial w/Classical detailing
SETTING: west side of 14th Street, length of block between Duane and Exchange Streets; three full elevations exposed, one half elevation exposed
SIGNIFICANCE: architecture
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A.C. Miller and J.H. Jeffers, proprietors of the Sunflower Diary, hired architect John E. Wicks to design this concrete and brick, two-story business block. The John Slotte Company was awarded the contract and construction began in April of 1923.
In September, 1923, Miller and Jeffers instructed the architect to change the second floor plans to provide for 36 hotel rooms instead of the various suites of business offices originally planned for that floor. In November, 1923, a ten-year lease on the second floor was signed with George F. Norblad, and in January, the Hotel Norblad opened its doors.
The Bank of Commerce, which had been operating out of its post-fire location in the basement of the courthouse, moved into their new quarters in the building and opened for business February 28, 1924. This was the first bank to open in permanent quarters since the fire disaster.
Other original building occupants were McLin Hardware Store, Cobban Music Company and the Alien Cafe, the first restaurant to open in permanent quarters in Astoria. Currently the building is occupied by the Compleat Photographer, The Frame Shop, Jim’s Vacuum Center, Yvonne’s Secret Garden, Grandma’s House and The Community Store, a natural foods grocery store.
This building is significant for its connection to architect John E. Wicks and contribution to the historic streetscape through its quality of design and retention of detail. The old painted wall signs are an additional attraction.
This building is rare in that it has two doorways with terra cotta surrounds. Only a handful of buildings in the downtown district include these classically detailed entries. The glass and pressed tin canopy is the finest canopy in the area. The building is also significant for its incorporation of a hotel, a common trend during the historic period.

Press Release
Portland, Oregon. Earth
Ecliptic Brewing of Portland, Oregon and Sierra Nevada Brewing of Chico, California have teamed up to brew a Cosmic Collaboration beer. Secchi Hoppy Wheat Ale will be the fourth release in the series for 2023, shipping June 21st in 16-ounce cans and draft.
“When I first started brewing,” says John Harris, Ecliptic’s Owner and Brewmaster, “Sierra Nevada was it. The ‘OG’. I am honored to be able to do this collaboration with them and Ken Grossman, their Founder. We decided to make a wheat beer for June. There’s lots of hop flavor and brightness from the hops”.
Ecliptic + Sierra Nevada Secchi Hoppy Wheat Ale starts with Pale and Wheat Malts and is hopped with Strata, Amarillo, McKenzie, and Citra. Real orange and lemon peel add a citrusy flavor to this fruit-forward beer. It is named after a mountain range on the Moon, “Montes Secchi,” paying homage to the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains, and it clocks in at 6.5% ABV.
Terrence Sullivan, Product Manager for Sierra Nevada, says, “Ecliptic Brewing’s founder, John Harris, has been a pioneer in West Coast craft beer for more than 30 years. His innovation has blazed a trail for an entire community, and he has influenced brewing up and down the coast. Over the years, our breweries have shared insights, knowledge, and friendship—along with a few great beers. We’re honored to join forces on Secchi Hoppy Wheat Ale, highlighting the unique flavors of the Oregon landscape.”
Ecliptic + Sierra Nevada Secchi Hoppy Wheat Ale will be released in 16-ounce cans and draft throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network on June 21st. Stay tuned for a release event in Portland with Terrance Sullivan on Jun 27th. Visit Ecliptic’s website for up-to-date details on this release and event.
Ecliptic + Sierra Nevada Secchi Hoppy Wheat Ale
Brewed with our friends at Sierra Nevada Brewing, this Hoppy Wheat Ale is named after a mountain range on the Moon. With pronounced hop character from Strata, Amarillo, McKenzie and Citra, this fruit-forward beer finishes crisp with a touch of citrus from real orange and lemon peel.
ABV: 6.5%
IBU: 55

Tumblr media
More and more, lately, I read hand-wringing laments about “all these new, sub-standard breweries” and, as I said in a previous post – “All These

Tart and fruit-forward, with minerality from the Amphora. This beer is the very first of what will be a series of beers made using our Amphora. An Amphora is a stone or ceramic vessel, historically used for fermentation and storage of beverages. Like an oak Foeder, the Amphora itself imparts character into the beer, creating complexity we would not be able to achieve in a stainless steel fermentation vessel. Commercial Beer in Oregon: Cheers to Charles Barrett, Henry Saxer, & Henry Weinhard!
I was looking for some sources on Prohibition in Oregon for a student and stumbled upon a bunch of words I wrote for my Oregon Encyclopedia “Brewing Industry in Oregon” article. There were many words I couldn’t include, but it seems good to put them in a series!
The story of brewing in Oregon is intertwined with immigration, railroad and shipping, natural resources, prohibition and the suffrage movement, urban renewal, labor relations, and community involvement. The first commercial operations were small, but access to high quality water and ideal conditions for growing hops set the stage Oregon’s vibrant beer industry.
Liquor was popular in the West as early as the 1830s, when fur traders distilled a beverage known as “Blue Ruin,” which they traded with local Natives. Men stationed at Fort Vancouver imported beer, and missionary Hiram Bingham wrote in 1829 that they cultivated and malted barley for beer and anticipated “exporting in small quantity.”
Tumblr media
Hard liquor was popular with early white settlers, and some engaged in small-scale brewing, but it wasn’t until the 1850s that commercial beer production began in earnest in Oregon.
Beer arrived in Oregon before it was a state. Oregon’s first brewery was advertised on August 12, 1854. It joined ads for barley, clothing, whiskey, bakeries, wagon shops, and temperance hotels. By 1859, Jacksonville, Oregon City, Portland, and The Dalles all had breweries.
By and large, most early brewers or brewery owners were German, or came from Central Europe, and that heritage was part of their identity and the styles they produced.

However, some came from England and France (from the Alsace region), and a surprising number of the first brewers in the state were from Switzerland.
Small breweries opened throughout the state, some in remote small towns, serving a specific industry or the town that supported it. These breweries had a ready customer base involved in industries like mining, logging, fishing, and canning. One example is the 1875 Akerblad Brewery in the town of Gardiner, population 200, which produced beer for millworkers and sailors traveling the Umpqua River. Mercantile shops selling alcohol, saloons, and breweries were often among the earliest businesses.

From 1854 to 1916, there were between 92 and 125 licensed breweries. In Gold Rush towns, mountainous logging communities, and busy urban areas many breweries were short-lived and annual or biennial ownership or name changes were regular occurrences. This makes it difficult to accurately calculate the dates of operation or number of breweries operating before national Prohibition in 1920. Sometimes an advertisement in a local newspaper was the only business record.
Tumblr media
For example, the first verifiable record of a brewery in Oregon is advertisement in the Oregonian. English-born Charles Barrett’s Portland Brewery and General Grocery Establishment, opened on Front Street in 1854 and sold merchandise (sperm candles, salt ham, matches, stone jugs) and alcohol. His shop operated for a few years and though business details aren’t provided, among other alcoholic beverages like whiskey and port wine, he sold ale in casks and bottles. By 1860, Barrett’s ads reflected the transition in the goods he sold; rather than operating under the moniker "brewery," he sold fruits, stationary, newspapers, and novels. In the years that followed, Barrett became a successful and wealthy bookshop owner with a tumultuous personal life. According to court records and newspaper articles, he had an acrimonious divorce during which he claimed two of his children weren't actually his, and his daughter murdered her husband in San Francisco after he left Portland with his mistress and her money. Barrett died in 1873.
Details for the second brewery in Oregon were also mainly recorded in ads.
Tumblr media
Swiss-born Henry Saxer immigrated to the U.S. in 1850 and to Oregon several years later. In 1856, he opened the Liberty Brewery at what is now 1st and Davis street. The earliest advertisements for the brewery lists Louis Behrens as a partner; two years later Saxer was the sole proprietor and Behrens had opened a brewery in Oregon City. The Liberty Brewery sold lager beer, and early ads indicate that Saxer would pay cash for barley. Saxer moved to Lewiston, Idaho, but soon returned to Portland. According to an 1866 ad, he owned the California Wine Depot, which sold domestic and international wines, and in his obituary, he was credited as being the man who brought California wines to Portland. Beyond his contribution to the alcohol trade, in 1870, he founded the German Benevolent Society (later German Aid Society) and was the first president in 1871; Henry Weinhard was also a member.
Tumblr media
However, in terms of facility size, production, and promotion, Henry Weinhard’s City Brewery in Portland was in a class of its own. Weinhard, now a well-known Oregon beer icon, took brewing to a new level in terms of facility size and scope of distribution. Portland’s most famous pre-Prohibition brewer opened his first business in Vancouver, Washington in 1856; he ran it for six months, before moving to Portland to open brewery with George Bottler on Couch and Front. Within a few months he was back in Vancouver and had opened the Star Brewery with John Meany, who sold Weinhard his shares 1858. Weinhard maintained ownership of the Star Brewery until 1864 but moved back to Portland in 1862 to open a brewery with George Bottler, which they called the Bottler Brewery. That same year, Weinhard bought the Liberty Brewery. In 1863, Bottler and Weinhard opened the City Brewery, which absorbed Bottler Brewery’s small operation; Weinhard bought out Bottler in 1866. Bottler died of pneumonia in Munich in 1868 of pneumonia and Henry Saxer was an executor of the estate. When Henry Weinhard died in 1904 Paul Wessinger, his son-in-law took over. Wessinger inherited an impressive business: the year after Weinhard’s death the City Brewery produced 35,000 barrels, far and above any other brewery in the state. The Wessinger family remained involved with the Blitz-Weinhard company until 1999 when the facility was closed by the Miller Brewing Company. Following the closure of the Portland brewery in 1999, Henry Weinhard's was brewed at the Olympia brewery in Tumwater, Washington until that brewery was closed in 2003. Some of its beers were brewed under contract at the Full Sail Brewing Company until 2013. Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve brand, which some credit as a transition drink between macro and micro beer, survives today and is currently owned by MillerCoors.
These three early and important brewers in Portland were joined by others throughout the state. They operated facilities that were very small and quite large, and many are excellent illustrations of how changes to transportation networks and technology, the importance of family, and the challenges of Prohibition changed the course of brewing in Oregon.
