2024 Retrospective: Song of the Year

Honestly, I’m really glad this year is over. I felt like it was really weak for music, K-Pop in particular. There were some good songs, and some really good ones, but also a lot of songs that just left me feeling empty. Overall, I’m just really glad this year is over, and I hope 2025 will be better. Well, for music at least, the world is pretty fucked.

But that’s not really what I’m here to talk about, so let’s just start with my Top 10 favourite songs of the year.

1: Jaejoong – Concrete Heart

Jaejoong just knows how to write and sing a compelling ballad. And it’s not his first ballad about growing and moving on. Broken Mirror has very similar subject matter, but still sounds very different. I love both songs and would put them in my top 5 favourite Jaejoong songs, but I do think this song does it a little better. It’s genuinely heartbreaking to listen to, which can be attributed both to his outstanding voice and also to the way he sings. He really sells every emotion in this song, to the point that when I first heard the line: “But the truth is, I’m only human. Sometimes you gotta take the fall.” I almost started crying. And I did cry about Jaejoong this year, but that’s for later.

2: Forestella – Apocalypse

Honestly, this is one of the most showstopping songs I have ever heard. As far as their original songs go, I don’t think they are going to top this one any time soon. The build-up, the instrumental, their vocals, everything about this is just perfect. And to be honest, this might objectively be a better song than Concrete Heart, I just listen to that more. Also, it does feel a little wrong to have a Forestella song without Woorim. I hope they’ll re-record it with him, once he is done with his military service. He has been gone for long enough, to be frank.

3: Kenshi Yonezu – RED OUT

This song is living proof, that simply being shorter than 3 minutes doesn’t make a song bad. It’s 2 and a half minutes long and one of the most complete sounding songs of the year. It just is that well written, which is not something unexpected from Kenshi Yonezu. He just really knows how to write good songs. It also is one of the most badass and unique songs of the year. And all of that for a Spotify ad, somehow.

4: Ten – Dangerous

Out of all the NCT members, Ten really deserved a solo debut the most, next to Taeyong. The difference between them is that I actually enjoy the music he is making. His debut mini album is just a full-on vibe, and Nightwalker is an amazing debut. But for me, this song is where the party is at. It’s genuinely as suave as it wants to be and really just a banger. I wish it had a proper performance video though.

5: Alien Stage Round 6 (Till (Akugetsu) & Ivan (Park Byeong Hoon) - CURE)

I was really thinking about whether to include songs from Alien Stage or not, but this is my Top 10, so I get to choose what goes in here and this song is just absolutely amazing. Akugetsu is just singing his heart out in this song and Park Byeong Hoon is also giving his all for his last (canonical) performance in this show. I only got into Alien Stage in September, so I wasn’t in the Fandom when this first dropped, but I can imagine (and also track) the meltdown fans had about this performance. It really was both a win and a loss. A win because of the song and a loss because holy shit, what the fuck was that???

6: PITTA – G.T.H.O

The New Normal Life EP as a whole is really good and I was really debating which song from it to put in my Top 10. I decided on this in the end, because I listened to it the most. It’s just so fucking cool, honestly and an anthem for everyone who has to deal with shitty bosses and/or co-workers (aka: me, when this song dropped). It’s one of those songs you just don’t skip whenever it comes on.

7: K.Will – No Sad Song for my Broken Heart

Out of all the things that happened in 2024, I didn’t expect a sequel to one of my favourite music videos. But I do seem to be the only one who saw a sad ending coming. K.Will is the king of ballads. Of course, he isn’t going to release something happy. And he did deliver. Not only does the music video tear my heart out, but the song makes me want to put it in a woodchipper. His voice is just so layered and conveys so much emotion, it’s impossible to not feel something when this song plays.

8: Jeff Satur – Ghost

It’s definitely one of his best ballads. Jeff just has a beautiful voice, and this song compliments it really well. He really peaked early in the year with this song. That’s not to say his other releases were bad or anything. Ghost is just too pretty.

9: Epik High – ANTIHERO

Despite not being the biggest fan of rap or hip-hop music, this has to be one of my most listened to songs of the year. Epik High, and Tablo in particular, are just really fucking badass. And this song really reflects that. The line “Fall asleep on a throne, wake up in an electric chair” particularly lives rent free in my head. The lyrics of this song in general are just so well written. It also has become one of my go-to songs to sing along. If you play this at my funeral and I don’t shout “Hero” in the chorus, you know I’m really dead.

10: Kenshi Yonezu – Sayonara, Mata Itsuka!

And Kenshi Yonezu sneaks in a second song. Opposed to RED OUT, this one is more vibey and a lot more vibrant. It’s honestly just really refreshing to have a breakup song, that is more about looking forward to the future and being on amicable terms. I feel like that’s a pretty rare thing to write about. He also shouldn’t be able to make this sound cool, yet he does. That’s just the power of autism, I guess.

members: Bae Doo-hoon (worked as a musical theater actor and as a guest vocalist in the gugak crossover band, baritone~tenor range), Kang Hyung-ho (was working as a chemistry researcher, but he was a vocalist in an office band that won a workplace band competition, tenor~soprano range), Cho Min-kyu ( leader of Forestella, leggiero tenor) and Go Woo-rim ( basso profundo) (have won honorable mentions in vocal competitions)

The group was formed on JTBC's music talent show Phantom Singer 2,

The formation date is September 26, 2017,

They debuted in March 2018 with the album "Evolution".

Forestella is a combination of the English word Forest, meaning forest, and the Italian word Stella, meaning star, with the idea of making music that is as relaxing as a forest and as sparkling as a star. This is why fans affectionately call them Forest Stars.
