International recognition has been a long-sought goal for Somaliland, a region in northern Somalia that has enjoyed de facto independence since 1991. But the groundbreaking agreement has created shockwaves in the region and fury in Somalia, which views it as a hostile violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.[...]

While Somaliland insists that recognition has already been agreed upon and settled, Addis Ababa has been reluctant to firmly address the matter of statehood. In a published communique, the government said it had yet to formally recognise Somaliland. But social media posts by Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs official Mesganu Arga this week appear to support Somaliland’s interpretation of the deal.

The ambiguity of the messaging continues to fuel speculation. A draft of the agreement has yet to be published, but all indications suggest that it would all but nullify a 2018 tripartite treaty cementing ties between Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea, details of which were similarly never made public.[...]

Domestically, conflict with Faro militiamen in Amhara and unrest in Oromia has weakened key support bases for Abiy. Failure to make payments on Ethiopia’s eurobonds at the end of 2023 has also heightened pressure on the prime minister.[...]

There are also domestic woes in Somaliland, which has known relative stability for decades. The enclave is struggling with an uprising by local clan militia who pushed its forces out of the disputed town of Las Anod in August.[...]

Diplomatic ties between them date back to the 1980s when Ethiopia supported Somaliland rebel fighters who helped win its de facto independence in 1991, the same year Ethiopia became landlocked after Eritrea’s successful war of independence. Ethiopia continued to use Eritrea’s Red Sea ports until the two states severed ties and fought a 1998-2000 border war, which killed 70,000 people. Since then, Ethiopia has used Djibouti’s port as its main trade conduit, but the billions Djibouti is believed to charge Ethiopia annually in port fees has had it exploring alternatives in Sudan, Somaliland and Kenya since the mid-2000s.

Agreements between Ethiopia and Somaliland over the use of its Berbera port date as far back as 2005, but issues including logistics and potential harm to relations with Mogadishu have prevented Addis Ababa from implementing a wholesale shift from Djibouti. In 2017, Ethiopia acquired shares in Berbera port as part of a deal involving Emirati logistics management company DP World to expand the port and turn it into a lucrative trade gateway catering to the needs of 119 million Ethiopians. At the time, Somalia denounced the deal as illegal. Ethiopia did not follow through on commitments and eventually lost its stake by 2022.[...]

After Somali independence in 1960 and until the end of the Cold War, the status of Ethiopia’s Somali region, its second largest by area, has been hotly contested between the two countries. The region, also known as Ogaden, is home to ethnic Somalis, who make up about 7 percent of Ethiopia’s population. It has witnessed numerous conflicts. One was the Ogaden War from 1977 to 1978, which killed tens of thousands of people before Ethiopia, with the assistance of Soviet military advisers and Cuban troops, reasserted dominance over the land.

Under the governments of Ethiopia’s Mengistu Hailemariam and Somali President Siad Barre [supported during the war by the US], both countries supported rebel factions in each other’s countries, which would go on to weaken and eventually lead to the overthrow of both leaders by 1991.

Somalia has never regained the stability it knew during the Barre era. [...] A considerable segment of Ethiopian troops has been part of the African Union peacekeeping mission mandated to fight the rebels in Somalia. Their semi-permanent presence in the country since 2006 has fuelled further resentment.[...]

Meanwhile, Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip has had a ripple effect, including most recently, Houthi rebel attacks on ships in the Red Sea, impacting the strategic Bad al-Mandeb Strait [just off Somaliland's coast]

Digimon Adventure: I watched this when it aired in my country in 1999! I was 7 and was hooked instantly. It helped me through dark times and kept me motivated, for that Digimon Adventure will always mean a lot to me! I'm still a Digimon fan and have been trying to get back into it (it's hard because it's so important to me that I'm stubborn tho lol) though recently I found out Junie is also a big fan so maybe I can take that plunge! :')

Sailor Moon: again I was obsessed with it since I was a little girl! I was a major Sailor Moon fan, and I remember actually having a figurine of her! I lost it as a child. I remember how I was strapped in the car seat when it fell down where your feet rest, but at my age I was too short to reach it so I cried for it and my dad said he'll get it for me! Surprisingly he couldn't find it? The car moving must have jostled it. I still think about it....despite that I think SM is BAD. LMAO like it's super badly written and I despise Usagi. However I adore the other scouts (ngl Haruka is also veering into annoying to me...) still the concept is so fun! And it's hella assthetic so I reblog and re-tweet it like mad. Lmao

Vision of Escaflowne: I LOVE THIS SERIES SOOOOO MUCH. It still holds up for me! I was obsessed as a kid and I watched it again during my second trip to Somaliland while I lay in agony lol (I was 23!) Like the show hits! I watched it...4 times? And I want to again! There are story beats that still stick with me. The art style can get some getting used to (it's the noses...) but tbh it influenced my style, haha. The movie looks better but the changes I heard made as made me vow to never watch it. 😒

Inuyasha: this was the first series I watched as a kid where I was like "this is foreign...this is...ANIME!" Because unlike the other anime they didn't give the characters English names nor did they make the openings and endings English! I'm actually a Rumiko Takahashi fan! This is how I got into her works but also again...like omfg it's embarrassing and not really good, like damn. She has this thing about toxic relationships lmao (except Maison Ikkou if iirc? That was just sweet!) I always have Hot Takes about Inuyasha but it'll always be a part of me.

Saiyuki: the first time I watched Saiyuki it was the movie, it was the middle of the night and I used my parents money to buy it on pay per view WITHOUT asking permission!! I fell in love instantly but was so scared and played dumb when they got the bill and was like "who paid for that!?" It took some time for me to properly get into it, it's dark and can be triggering but I really fell in love with the cast and story! It's very intriguing.

Bleach: it really spoke to me as a kid who's family has spooky ooky shit in its bg hahaha. That and how Ichigo is! As an older sister who'd do anything for my siblings and pushes themselves too far for that...Ichigo is just very relatable. Lol

Katekyo Hitman Reborn: I believe I was 16-17 when I finally got into Reborn? I knew of it vaguely because my two older brothers were into it before me! I don't remember how I started reading it (I have never properly watched the anime), but I did and got obsessed! I was all over this website called Quizilla devouring KHR works! This is how I stumbled onto Jojo! She wrote about the Varia, and I messaged her to gush about it. It's been 15-16 years since then!! I honestly think I'm very attached to KHR because of that. Sure there are fun concepts and I love how I can rotate the characters in my mind but damn it's...a mess. High key embarrassed when I admit to liking it to non-fans. 😭it's very "please don't think badly of me, I beg!!" LMAO

Princess Tutu: ABSOLUTE BANGER! I watched it 3 times and imma watch it more in the future, I know this. If you haven't watched it, you should!

Kingdom Hearts: hehe! Adding this because it has a manga that I've read parts of! Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: what if I told you I only got into this series because it has Jojo's name in it...still! I became obsessed. I love Araki's style of storytelling and art. It pushes me to be true to my own style, no matter what! It's definitely an influence for me.

Now I find them kinda cute...!

Card Captor Sakura: This is the series that got me super into Clamp. I'm adding this because despite the issues I have with their work, it influenced me greatly! It's the reason I'm working on my own universe the way I do. I also want to have a large cast of characters that appear in each other's works. :')

Golden Kamuy: No lie I think this is the tightest written weekly shounen manga ever. No if ands or buts. I think it's wonderfully written and incredibly compelling! It's also very silly? Reminded me of Gintama with how outrageous it could get 😭 still the core themes of the story are about imperialism and colonization so it's also got a lot of serious topics. If you get into it JUST READ THE MANGA! THE ANIME IS SO POORELY PRODUCED.

Conservative calls to deport Representative Ilhan Omar over comments she purportedly made about Somalia have no legal merit, experts tell Newsweek.

The progressive Democrat, a Somali American and Muslim, has been under fire for remarks she allegedly made to Somali American constituents that have been viewed over 7 million times on X. Omar, a Somali American and Muslim, seemed to address a deal struck by Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland with landlocked Ethiopia to give it access to the sea.

Republicans, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, have openly called for Omar to be deported, with the latter saying: "She flaunts using her position as congresswoman to protect Somalia's border while our border is invaded by MILLIONS of illegals who are a danger to America."

Immigration lawyer Rosanna Berardi told Newsweek that since Omar is a naturalized U.S. citizen, calls for deportation lack legal ground unless the individual in question gained citizenship through nefarious means such as fraud, misrepresentation or membership in certain organizations—or being dishonorably discharged from the U.S. military if citizenship was based on military service.

The Minnesota representative's statements, whether accurate or taken out of context, are also protected under the First Amendment, which extends not just to U.S. citizens but also to public officials who routinely express opinions on foreign and domestic matters and do so without fear of legal repercussions—especially deportation.

"The Immigration and Nationality Act allows for deportation/removal of individuals due to criminal activities, violations of status or violation of immigration law," Berardi said. "Deportation for expressing political views, particularly those covered by the First Amendment, is not legally supported. Political speech does not constitute a valid basis for deportation.

"In essence, we have a series of sound bites here that are legally baseless. Typical political banter."

Stephen Schnably, a law professor at the University of Miami, told Newsweek that calls for the deportation of a sitting member of Congress for expressing personal views—whether accurate or spun by political adversaries—is "far beyond the realm of any reasonable response to her remarks."

"It's just not in the cards, deportation as punishment for a U.S. citizen," he said. "That is something that just cannot be done."

He said that even if Omar's statements, as attributed by some conservatives, are taken at face value, favoring foreign country interests over U.S. interests "is not a First Amendment violation to do that." Members of Congress can say what they want, and ultimately, voters have their say in elections.

The situation would potentially be different if Omar did not hypothetically register as an agent of a foreign government, comparing Omar's casual remarks to criminal charges against Democratic Senator Bob Menendez. The New Jersey legislator and his wife are accused of accepting bribes, including gold, cash, a luxury vehicle and payments toward a home mortgage, allegedly in exchange for advancing their interests, as well as those of the Egyptian government, in his role as the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

But in Omar's case, there is no indication that anything of that sort—of "committing a well-defined crime where conduct or actions are not in accordance with a statute that is not constitutional."

Politicians make similar remarks all the time, Schnably added, saying there is nothing unusual about foreign policy positions that favor one country over another in a dispute.

Omar's alleged statements, backlash

According to one translation of Omar's remarks first shared on X by Ambassador Rhoda J. Elmi, Somaliland's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar purportedly said that she was "Somalian first, Muslim second" and "here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system."

Omar is also alleged to have said that "as Somalis, one day we will go after our missing territories."

But Omar has refuted the retelling of her statements, calling the viral clip "not only slanted but completely off," adding that she "wouldn't expect more from these propagandists."

Another translation posted online by Abdirashid Hashi, a researcher and Somalia analyst, states that Omar said that Somalis "are sisters and brothers, supporting each other, people who know they are Somalis and Muslims, coming to each other's aid."

Per that translation, she also said: "While I am in Congress, no one will take Somalia's sea. The United States will not back others to rob us. So, do not lose sleep over that, O Minnesotans. The lady you sent to Congress is on this, and she is as cognizant of this interest as you are."

Greene bashed Omar and her comments in an X post, saying: " Patriots, you must show up big in 2024. We have a country to save and people to deport."

"Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport!" DeSantis wrote on X.

In the past, DeSantis has singled out Omar as allegedly propagating antisemitic movements within Congress. In January 2022, after a group of people wearing Nazi symbols made national headlines for yelling antisemitic slurs on streets and highway overpasses in the Orlando area, DeSantis said he would not let others shame him for his support of Jews.

"I'm not going to have people try to smear me that belong to a political party that has elevated antisemites to the halls of Congress, like (US Rep.) Ilhan Omar, that have played footsie with the (boycott Israel) movement," DeSantis said at the time.

The Liberation campaign which finally drove the Italians out of Ethiopia conditioned the nature of the country’s international relations in the 1940s. The prominent role that the British played in the process, for their own global strategic reasons, gave them a position of ascendancy in Ethiopia. The tripartite competition among Britain, France and Italy for control of Ethiopia in the pre-1935 period was replaced by unilateral British domination. This fact was given legal embodiment in the agreements that Ethiopia was forced to sign with Britain in 1942 and 1944. On the basis of these agreements, and under the convenient excuse that the continuation of World War Two required making adequate provisions for Allied defence, the British came to assume extensive control over Ethiopia’s finance, administration and territorial integrity. In the first Anglo-Ethiopian Agreement of 1942, although the British nominally recognized the ‘free and independent’ status of Ethiopia, almost every article underlined its dependency and the preponderant role of Britain... In short, the status they reserved for the country was aptly expressed by the term they chose for it, despite protests: Occupied Enemy Territory Administration.

All this was clearly not to the liking of the emperor. While grateful to the British for helping him to return from exile to the throne that he had lost five years earlier, he was not prepared to stomach for long the curtailment of his prerogatives. What he aspired to was the reconstitution of his autocratic powers on an even more solid base, in partnership with the British, but not through subservience to them. What the British sought was apparently to drag the country back to its pre-1935 level, depriving it of even the few benefits of Italian colonial rule. The second Anglo-Ethiopian Agreement, signed in 1944, went some way to restore Ethiopia’s sovereign rights. The precedence enjoyed by the British minister over all other foreign representatives was lifted. The Ethiopian government regained its freedom to appoint foreigners of any nationality as advisers or officers.

While the Agreement of 1944 thus gave the Ethiopian state a relatively greater margin of independence, the British none the less still retained substantial control over the country’s destiny. This was particularly evident with regard to Ethiopia’s territorial integrity. Taking advantage of their strong military presence in the country, the British took control of both Eritrea and the Ogaden. Soon, they started to devise plans for the future: in both cases, these plans envisaged the severance of the territories from Ethiopia. The Ogaden was to be added to British Somaliland and the former Italian Somaliland, to form what was rather ominously christened Greater Somalia – the seed for Somali irredentism in subsequent decades. For Eritrea, the British had a slightly more complex arrangement. The Eritrean lowlands were to be united to Sudan, with which they shared geographical, ethnic and religious affinities. The predominantly Christian highlands, integrated with their Tegrean kin in Ethiopia, were to form a separate state. In effect, the plan envisaged a further amputation of Ethiopia in the north. It is worthy of note that the British plans for both Eritrea and the Ogaden, with the exception of the special fate reserved for the Eritrean lowlands, amounted to a perpetuation of the administrative divisions set up during the Italian Occupation.

China is making too many friends. Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party have shown that they are willing to spend hundreds of billions of dollars in developing countries, causing many nations to deepen their relations with China—a worrying development for those who support democracy and human rights.

Fortunately, some resist the Chinese attempts to buy political allies. One such group is the government of Somaliland, an autonomous region within Somalia that has been attempting to establish itself as an independent country for decades. While no country recognizes Somaliland as an independent state, America should be the first to do so. If the Biden Administration recognized Somaliland, America would gain an ally in a critical geostrategic region.[...]

While they have rebuffed China’s advances, Somaliland has actively sought to ally with the United States. The president of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, took a recent trip to Washington D.C. where he met with Biden administration officials in an attempt to gain recognition for Somaliland. With the hope of deepening U.S.-Somaliland relations, the government of Somaliland has offered to allow the American military access to the geostrategically positioned Berbera port and airfield. Berbera port lies on the Gulf of Aden and overlooks crucial maritime trade routes.

Somaliland has also been one of the most stable regions in East Africa for decades, at times even showing promising aspects of a functioning democracy. By recognizing its independence, America would be supporting a feeble democracy with the hopes of strengthening it in the near future.

Finally, formally recognizing Somaliland would strengthen America’s economic ties to the region. Unfortunately, Somaliland gets lumped in with their conflict-prone southern neighbor, which keeps them from receiving private sector investment. Suppose the United States formally recognized Somaliland as an independent state. In that case, the new nation could enjoy the benefits of foreign investment to a scale that was not previously available. This will bring economic growth to Somalilanders and deepen America's economic ties with East Africa.

Recognizing Somaliland would not be without potential costs—America would undoubtedly damage its relationship with Somalia. However, the United States derives minimal benefit from that relationship as it is. There is also the possibility that Somaliland will fall apart and become a failed state, but that seems unlikely given the fact that they have successfully governed themselves for the past 30 years. Other threats exist, but none of them outweighs the potential benefit of gaining a democratic ally in a region where China is making inroads.
