We have more bad news for Mustang fans. After Ford in early October announced that the Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R were dead after 2020, we must now report that more beloved options will be disappearing. First spotted by Muscle Cars & Trucks, order guides for the 2021 Ford Mustang posted up on Blue Oval Forums point to both the Mustang... Ford Mustang Mach-E First Hits Europe Before America
By Dave Ashton
As muscle and pony car fans, we are generally more interested in the Mustang Mach-E for how the vehicle will progress in the next few years, rather than be excited about an electric version of the Mustang. Performance EVs are slowly dripping into the mainstream, but the main fascination with the Mustang Mach-E is that it’s borrowed two cherished names of classic pony cars for an electric SUV.
Some have simply face palmed the idea, while others may think, give the thing a chance and see what happens. Either way, a discussion over at the Mach-E Club forum outlines an interview with Jason Mase, head of Ford Electrification Marketing Strategy, with the main takeaway stating the Mach-E will hit European shores before the US. That’s going to be the fourth quarter of 2020 for the US, where the First Edition, Select, California Route 1 and Premium models will be available, with the GT Performance version coming sometime in 2021.
The EV is going to be available with a variety of leasing options, one of these being to return the vehicle at the end of the lease period, for various federal EV tax incentives. All fine and dandy if you like the idea of an all electric Ford SUV, but this new vehicle has borrowed two classic car names, one of these from a vehicle that has been a classic pony car for over 50 years. In this respect, comparisons are going to be made. Is the new vehicle worthy of the name? Is it going to be the new evolution of the Mustang or Mach? Questions, questions…..
V8 Mustang or V Hate Mustang
There’s already a lot of dissension in the ranks with the Mustang Mach-E. Things like, ‘it’s not a proper Mustang’,’a Mustang can’t be an SUV or an EV’,’A Mustang doesn’t have a ‘frunk’ and so on. Legitimate reactions, especially if you’ve been a Mustang fan for decades. The reactions would be exactly the same if any other car maker stuck a classic model names on a new EV SUV. A Dodge Charger EV, a Corvette SUV and so on.
You can understand the point of view of Ford. EV’s are the way things are going, so why not bring some heritage to the new vehicle, while also making the owner feel like they are part of a long and rich history of Mustangs. A particular scenario – someone with a few kids who would love a Mustang, but can’t justify it for the family. They need some sort of SUV, so why not kill a few birds with one stone and get an EV to cover their eco-credentials, a SUV for the family and the street cred. of a Mustang. The first two boxes are ticked, but it’s not a real Mustang, in the sense of a performance pony car.
Two lines of thinking
Which brings us to the next bunch of years where we will see the Mustang Mach-E make or break. The Mustang could branch off into the traditional, high-performance V8 versions and regular EV pathways. A specialist vain for V8 power and one for electric for the next decade, then see what happens.
The changes are obviously not going happen overnight. Years of slow transition as everyone acclimatizes to the new ideas. There’s even been renderings of a possible high-performance Mustang Mach-E, as below from X-Tomi Design showing more of a GT500 version of the Mach-E. A glimpse into a performance version, rivaling the Tesla model Y.
Another way of thinking is the current V8 Mustangs will eventually be completely replaced by EVs and become classics in their own right. Recently shown when CEO of Barrett-Jackson auctions, Craig Jackson landed VIN 001 of the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 for a cool $1.1 million, with the proceeds going to charity. Classic status already.
Let’s see what the Europeans think first
So, back to the original point. It makes sense to test out this new platform in Europe first off, as the Mustang GT has sold amazingly well over there with no preconceived conceptions of what a Mustang should be. The sales success in Europe has come from the Mustang being a great performance car, with more raw sensibilities, a great price tag and an exciting alternative to the usual European fare.
Plus, the Mustang Mach-E will be simply seen as more of an alternative to other EV SUVs in Europe, rather than an aberration of a classic name. Having Mustang in the name will simply be seen as being a bit more cool than owning something with a bunch of letters and numbers. I wouldn’t even be surprised if Ford eventually sell more abroad than in the US.
There’s a good chance the Mustang Mach-E could be a resounding hit. Some cool, pony car Americana wedged into a EV SUV. With 255, 282, 332, and 459 HP options available, a range going from 210 miles to 300 miles and with prices estimated to be around $44,895 and $65,500. It could also be just like the regular Mustang, the most power around for your buck.
Let’s just sit back and see how Ford play this one out.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Appears to Be Dead
Yesterday we we reported that the legendary Mustang Mach 1 nameplate might be making a comeback in 2021. We think the Mach 1 will be a run-out special for the current generation of Mustang, and will replace the Bullitt Mustang after Ford’s licensing deal with Warner Brothers, the studio that owns the rights to Bullitt, runs its course. We also learned some more details about the 2021 Bronco Sport. What do all these fortuitous info drops have in common? They were revealed by vehicle identification number (VIN) decoders leaked online. The latest from that trove of VIN decoders? The foreboding hint that the much-loved Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R could be going away soon.
In the very same VIN decoder that leaked on enthusiast forum Mach E Club and clued us in on the existence of the Mach 1, we noticed only one 5.2-liter V-8 listed for the 2021 model year Mustang lineup. What’s so bad about one measly V-8? Well, both the GT350 and the brand-new Shelby GT500 models are powered by different 5.2-liter V-8s. With only one listed on the VIN sheet, that’d mean only one of those two models will be sold for 2021, and it seems unfathomable that Ford would, for some reason, discontinue the just-released and massively more powerful GT500 in favor of the older GT350. Most likely, it’s the other way around: The GT500 is replacing, in effect, the GT350s.
This is sad news for Mustang fans—or just those who love the sounds of the GT350’s sonorous, free-revving flat-plane-crankshaft “Voodoo” V-8. We may never see another engine like it ever again from a mainstream automaker like Ford. It was the first flat-plane-crank V-8 to ever be put in a Mustang (that crankshaft design is favored by Ferrari, for example) and was truly the GT350’s best party trick. Even so, the GT500 has the same moves as the GT350, if not better, plus its 5.2-liter cross-plane V-8 (so, normal crank) is supercharged and produces 234 more horsepower than the Voodoo V-8, for a total of 760. It makes its own good noises.
This news, of course, hasn’t been confirmed officially. Ford sent us a solid non-comment on the matter. But, it seems to make sense, however cruelly that impacts the GT350: The GT500 is now king of the Mustang hill, and we don’t know if Ford wants one high-performance Mustang cannibalizing sales of another. So, if this is the case, and the GT350 is dead, it will be a sad, misty-eyed goodbye to one of the best ‘Stangs we’ve ever driven.

New on Sports Illustrated: What's Next in the James Wiseman Saga?
Wiseman has withdrawn from the University of Memphis and reportedly signed with an agent, making him ineligible to play in NCAA games.
James Wiseman is now a professional athlete. The former University of Memphis Tigers freshman, who had been suspended by the NCAA for allegedly accepting $11,500 in moving expenses from Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway while Wiseman was in high school and Hardaway was a high school basketball coach, announced on Friday that he had withdrawn from the university. The Athletic's Shams Charania reports that Wiseman has signed with an agent. The signing renders Wiseman ineligible to play in NCAA games.
Wiseman’s short stay at Memphis attracted a considerable amount of attention from NCAA enforcement officers and attorneys hired by Wiseman and the NCAA.
The Wiseman-NCAA battle formally began on Nov. 8 when his attorneys sought and obtained a temporary restraining order from a judge in Shelby County (Tennessee). The order effectively blocked the NCAA from suspending Wiseman. Although the NCAA had not yet suspended Wiseman, the non-profit organization expressed that it would likely do so.
The pending suspension primarily concerned events that had occurred in 2017. At the time, Hardaway was a coach at Memphis East High School. He allegedly paid $11,500 in expenses for Wiseman and his family to move from Nashville to Memphis. Several months later, the University of Memphis hired Hardaway and later signed Wiseman as a top recruit.
The NCAA objected to the payment of expenses not because Hardaway would be hired by Memphis months later, but because the NCAA classified Hardaway as a representative of Memphis’s athletic interests (also known as a “booster”). Hardaway, the third overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft, is a legendary alumnus of the university and its basketball program. Boosters include persons who promote a school’s athletic program. Under NCAA rules, boosters are generally forbidden from conferring money or items of value to a university’s student-athletes or its recruits.
About a week after obtaining a temporary restraining order, attorneys for Wiseman negotiated a resolution of sorts with the NCAA. Wiseman withdrew his litigation and accepted the NCAA’s authority to suspend him. The NCAA suspended Wiseman 12 games, a suspension the NCAA upheld on Wiseman’s appeal. The suspension would have expired on January 12, meaning the 11th-ranked Tigers planned on Wiseman playing in postseason tournaments.
More controversially, the NCAA also required that Wiseman “donate” $11,500 to a charity. Obviously, a “required donation” is tantamount to a fine—a curious punishment for a player who, as an amateur, can’t be paid. NCAA rules also do not contemplate player fines.
Wiseman finishes his collegiate career having played in three games. The 7’1, 240-pound center averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in those games. Wiseman is widely expected to be selected among the top three picks in the 2020 NBA draft.
The Wiseman saga will continue to play on in at least five ways:
1) Wiseman can now sign lucrative endorsement deals and profit from the use of his name, image and likeness. If it hasn’t already happened, it won’t take long for representatives of major sneaker, apparel, food, beverage and video game companies to contact Wiseman’s agent and present offers.
A player projected to be a top three pick in the NBA draft can expect multi-million-dollar endorsement offers from companies in those and other industries.
The days of worrying about NCAA eligibility are officially over for Wiseman. He’s now a pro and can become a very wealthy 18-year-old in a matter of days.
2) The timing of Wiseman’s announcement is really bad for the NCAA. While the NCAA fends off legal and policy attacks on its system of amateurism, Wiseman just highlighted the power of players to render the NCAA irrelevant.
Consider the context of Wiseman’s decision. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed the Fair Pay to Play Act, which beginning in 2023 will make it illegal for California colleges to deny college athletes opportunities to hire agents and license their names, images and likenesses. Other states are exploring similar legislation. NCAA president Mark Emmert was in D.C. earlier this week hoping for members of Congress to propose an NCAA-friendly bill on name, image and likeness while offering an ambiguous message at an Aspen Institute forum.
Meanwhile, the G League is paying players more and giving them greater publicity, and NBA players are helping G Leaguers unionize. Watching it all unfold are LaMelo Ball and R.J. Hampton, two 18-year-old American basketball stars who are getting paid to play in Australia’s National Basketball League while preparing for the 2020 NBA draft.
It would not be surprising to see elite high school basketball stars increasingly turn away from playing in college. Even without eligibility to enter the NBA out of high school, they can, as 18-year-olds, play professionally, get on TV, make good wages and sign endorsement deals. They also just saw the NCAA impose a five-figure fine—ahem, required donation—on Wiseman, whom NCAA amateurism rules forbid from being paid for his highly marketable basketball talents and identity.
This is a not a good fact pattern for the NCAA.
3) Will Wiseman ever make the “required donation”? It’s not clear if Wiseman or his family have complied with the NCAA punishment that he “donate” $11,500 as a condition to him returning to play.
If he hasn’t paid the amount and refuses to do so, the NCAA might experience difficulty enforcing this supposed obligation. The NCAA claimed in writing that Wiseman “must donate $11,500 to a charity of his choice.” This was strange wording. A donation is a voluntary act. Merriam-Webster defines a donation as “the making of a gift.” We are not legally obligated to make gifts.
Unless Wiseman has contractually agreed to make the donation, it is probably not one that the NCAA can legally enforce. The NCAA no longer has any leverage over Wiseman. He’s a pro.
4) Will Wiseman return to school? As a basketball player, the answer to this question is clearly “no.” As a student, we’ll see. A number of NBA players and other pro athletes have pursued studies and completed college degrees during the offseason. With more and more schools offering online courses, starting or returning to college are much more feasible.
The larger point: college is not a “one shot” deal. A player who leaves school and turns pro hasn’t foreclosed the chance to return there, or at another university, as a student. He or she wouldn’t receive an athletic scholarship, but they might have earned enough money to pay tuition or they might receive other kinds of scholarships and aid.
5) Will Hardaway or Memphis be punished? While Wiseman is now beyond the long reach of the NCAA, the same can’t be said of Hardaway or the University of Memphis. As detailed by Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, the NCAA could punish both for violations related to moving expenses. Hardaway, for example, could be suspended given his role in the controversy.
The NCAA might also punish Memphis for playing Wiseman against Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 8 and Oregon on Nov. 12 while he faced a pending punishment.
To that point, the NCAA previously warned Memphis that the school “ultimately is responsible for ensuring its student-athletes are eligible to play." The NCAA also has the power of the Restitution Rule. Under this rule, the NCAA can compel a school to share television receipts for games played by a player whom the NCAA declares ineligible but who defied the NCAA by playing through a court injunction that is later vacated.
Here, as part of a settlement with the NCAA, Wiseman petitioned for the judge to dismiss the lawsuit and thus vacate the injunction. Also, the NCAA had not yet suspended Wiseman. Under those circumstances, the NCAA would probably decline to pursue a penalty under the Restitution Rule. We’ll see.
Michael McCann is SI’s Legal Analyst. He is also an attorney and Director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law.

Ford v Ferrari depicts a generation of car guys that’s best left behind
(Bloomberg) –Ford v Ferrari, which opened Friday, Nov. 15 starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, follows British racing driver Ken Miles (Bale), and hot-rodder Carroll Shelby (Damon) as they build a special race car to help the Ford Motor Company beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 and 1967. The goal was to break Enzo Ferrari’s stronghold on international racing that had his Scuderia Ferrari winning everything throughout the 1960s.
They strike an odd-couple pair: Miles is a wiry, eccentric Brit; Shelby is a square-jawed, cowboy-hat-wearing Texan. Neither much like the corporate pressure exerted by Ford chief Lee Iacocca and his marketing goons, who themselves were humiliated by Ferrari’s Old World gravitas after a bungled buyout attempt. And there you have the necessary tension for a movie.
It’s a beautifully shot film that will be enjoyable for modern car buyers and enthusiasts alike—engines rev, tires squeal, stopwatches click. But what I saw is a devastating picture of the lack of diversity that permeated the industry in the 1960s.

If automakers want any hope of relevance in the next decades, as they face the most radical changes and challenges they’ve experienced in 150-odd years of automotive history, they would be wise to contemplate it closely. Because Ford v Ferrari shows a generation best left dead and gone.
It’s a Man’s World
Picture this: During all 152 minutes of the film—which, for those who love vintage racing cars, will feel as good as an ice cream sundae on a summer afternoon, and you can read all about that here—men dominate the screen for 98% of the time, by my unofficial count. They are in the executive suites at Ford and Ferrari, in the workshops and garages in Venice, on the track out at Willow Springs Raceway. (And when I say men, I mean white, straight men.)
No fraction of the storyline is devoted to parsing the thoughts and feelings of any female who appears, even peripherally, on screen. Instead, Caitriona Balfe, who plays Miles’s wife, Mollie, is presented as the doting mother: She smiles mildly and nods her head indulgently as her husband struggles to gain traction in the race world. She clucks and scolds like a schoolmarm when Miles and Shelby come to blows on her front lawn—then brings them each a soda pop.
Other women waft through the film like smoke: Secretaries in wood-paneled offices handing manila folders to men in navy suits; corporate wives smiling silently, always positioned one step behind their husbands’ shoulder; young racing fans that serve as pretty décor on racing podiums. To the victor go the spoils.
The critique I heard most often about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could easily apply here: This is a film celebrating those nostalgic golden days when white men ruled. It’s pretty to watch if you can suspend thinking for two hours about what that world must have been like for any ambitious or creative folks who didn’t fit that demographic.
Behind the Shiny Exterior
The central message of Ford v Ferrari—that the answer to the question,Who are you? is what really matters in life—is delivered in the beginning, middle, and end of the film by Shelby.
The biggest problem with that is Carroll Shelby. The man who was responsible for turning the Ford Mustang into the epitome of American muscle occupies a godlike status in car culture and embodied everything the red-blooded American male of the era was supposed to hold supreme.
Some of it is admirable: A former chicken farmer from Texas who pulled himself up by his own proverbial bootstraps, Shelby wore overalls when he raced and built his own cars with Ford-tough V8 engines. He beat the Europeans at their own game at Le Mans. In his later years, he established a charity that helped provide organ transplants for children.
Most of it was not: Shelby was a notorious womanizer who blew through six marriages and was heading toward divorce from his seventh when he died. He spoke to everyone with language so blue it was legendary; ask any car journalist or professional driver who knew him, and they’ve got plenty of descriptive words to describe the way he treated anyone within earshot. Many of those words are unprintable here.
For fun, he shot lions, elephants, and rhinoceroses on animal hunts in Africa. He filed so many lawsuits—against Ford, against local car builders, against online forums, and, ironically, against the company that later would supply all of the Cobras for the film—that he become more known and reported on for that in his later years than for any feats of automotive genius.
In fact, after his blast of success with the AC Cobras in the 1960s and his hot-rod take on the Ford Mustang, Shelby didn’t have a single real hit. Instead, there were claims he falsely represented many of the cars he sold. He left Ford for Chrysler, where he helped develop some special-edition Dodges. Ford fans brought up to adore him as a brand hero shouldn’t have been so surprised he left; this was not an individual known for loyalty to anyone or anything other than himself.
It gets worse: One of his former personal assistants, Angelica Smith, sued Shelby for sexual harassment in 2011. The suit included information about an alleged rape that happened at Shelby’s home by one of his employees, and that she was fired, partly in retaliation, after she reported it. (Shelby called the allegations “wild and fantastical” at the time; he died less than a year later.) But that particular anecdote has been washed almost entirely clean by the same boys-club car culture that idolizes Steve McQueen, a decent actor who died conveniently early and had a habit of hitting his wives.
Read: The Electric Cars Are Here. Now How About Selling Them
“Who are you?” is rich, coming from Shelby. We know what kind of man he was: The type we all are better off for no longer holding the keys to any automotive kingdom.
Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss
It’s no surprise to survey this patriarchal wasteland—but it’s no less depressing to see it, nonetheless. The epic portrayed remains uncomfortably close to how the car world is today. We still have to look hard to find women of consequence.
There’s Laura Schwab, the president of Aston Martin of America. Katya Bassi, Lamborghini’s chief marketing officer. Susanne Klatten, who, with her brother, owns nearly half of BMW AG.
But only one major automaker in the world has a woman in control of it all: Mary Barra has led General Motors as Chief Executive Officer since taking the helm in 2014. Last year she named Dhivya Suryadevara as GM’s chief financial officer; Suryadevara is the first woman to hold that job at GM and is now in line as a possible Barra successor.
Six of GM’s 11 global board members are women, an admirable percentage. But the numbers are worse elsewhere. At Toyota, just 13% of board members are women; Hyundai and Kia have no women in any position as high as vice president. The auto industry lags behind the rest of the world: women in corporate America at large occupy 21% of C-suite offices, 30% of VP-level roles and 38% of managerial roles, while the auto industry places women in 13% of C-suites, 18% of VP-level spots, and 20% of managerial positions, according to Catalyst, a nonprofit that advocates for women in industry.
This isn’t good enough. Today car companies face difficult questions about brand identity and mobility—concepts they’ve never had to contemplate before now. They are evaluating who they are—there’s that question again—in a world increasingly oriented toward mobility rather than mechanical transport, electric motors rather than V8 engines.
Ford v Ferrari puts in stark relief the stunted mentality of previous generations. Carroll Shelby, crystalized by Hollywood like a mosquito in amber, is its totem artifact of generations dead and gone. For those who are serious about making brilliant, thrilling, innovative vehicles in the modern age, he’s best left behind.
