Hello! Are you interested in learning how to navigate the FDA recall website? Here's a little information about it!
As of now, the website is at: https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts
Here's what you'll see when you visit:
Below this, you'll find two things:
- A search feature
- The comprehensive list.
How to interpret the list:
I will use the first item as an example. It says "2/10/2024" and "SaveMart."
Do I frequently by any "SaveMart" food? I don't know. I'm not familiar with that brand. Sometimes smaller, better-known brands are contained under these larger categories. So I will click on it:
Now I can see that "SaveMart" includes something else called "Lucky" and "Lucky California." I also see that this recall is about their "service deli chicken street taco kit" specifically.
Is that all the information I need? I will scroll down to read the Summary.
It's important to note WHY the product is being recalled! Some are "less serious" recalls, such as "oops, we said this product didn't have peanuts, but it might." (I say "less serious" because allergens are less of a health risk for the average person than pathogen contaminants like Listeria, E. coli, etc.) These "less serious" recalls can still indicate poor quality of production, so even if they aren't relevant to you, it's worth being aware of.
However, this recall is Listeria! What is Listeria? Often, the recall page will explain the contaminant and it's dangers. There is often other VERY IMPORTANT information too.
So I will scroll down and skim the next section:
Note, there is a description for Listeria.
But IMPORTANTLY, it notes that the risk comes specifically from cotija cheese from Rizo-Lopez Foods.
At this point, I'm not sure if other products containing this ingredient have issued recalls. Typically, recalls are made voluntarily by the brands/companies that sell the products. However, the FDA can also announce contaminants, if the companies do not volunteer that information. I will return to the main page and continue reading the recent recalls, looking for the Rizo-Lopez cojits cheese as I read about other recalls.
I click on the second one, Stater Bros., and hey! That looks familiar! Is it the same cheese? I scroll down to see:
Yep, same cheese!
And when I scroll down more, I find some very helpful information:
So, the FDA and CDC are investigating the outbreak. It's related to cojita and queso fresco. And, helpfully, there is a link for more information!
When I click the link, it takes me to a page for Rizo-López Foods, Inc, and their voluntary recall of dairy products. Tumblr says I can't add more pictures so here's some information from the page:
The recalled products were distributed nationwide by RLF and through distributors. Products also were sold at retail deli counters including, but not limited to, El Super, Cardenas Market, Northgate Gonzalez, Superior Groceries, El Rancho, Vallarta, Food City, La Michoacana, and Numero Uno Markets.
The recalled products include cheese, yogurt, and sour cream sold under the brand names Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, Rio Grande, Food City, El Huache, La Ordena, San Carlos, Campesino, Santa Maria, Dos Ranchitos, Casa Cardenas, and 365 Whole Foods Market.
Note that it discusses some of the places it was sold, and the brands it was sold under! If you have loved ones who buy the products, be a sweetheart and tell them.
At the bottom of this page is a BIG, HELPFUL SECTION OF PHOTOS of some affected products! You can screenshot those to reference at the store, and send the photos to loved ones.
If you are quick, you can scan a whole year's worth of recalls in 10-30 minutes. Then you just need to periodically check back for new ones!
Okay, hope that is helpful for someone! Stay up-to-date and stay safe! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

If you're in the Pensacola area, then you have probably already experienced the need for having to remove a tree or stump or getting your tree's trimmed. This will help not only beautify your property but also is the safest way to do it. Max Moreno, director of technology and water management for Everthrive Landscape Co., says the opportunity for this project came from his relationship with Hannah Standerfer, farm manager at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Irvine, Calif. Max Moreno Standerfer previously worked with Moreno as an intern at Bemus Landscape, in San Clemente, Calif., where Moreno served as the director of water conservation for several years. “(Second Harvest Food Bank) had some land from the (University of California) South Coast Research and Extension Center,” Moreno says. “I got together with them and a distributor to donate my time and expertise so that we can create these drip beds so that they can produce fresh vegetables (for the community.)” Moreno says Hunter Industries and Imperial Sprinkler Supply, an irrigation distributor with locations in Southern California, aided with the project by donating materials, including a solar-powered irrigation controller from Hunter. “Now (the food bank) is cultivating a lot of fresh vegetables on 93 raised beds throughout the property. It’s going to help a lot of these low-income families to have nutritious food for the community,” Moreno adds. Moreno and his team of volunteers utilized Netafim Techline drip lines and Hunter valves for the raised beds. The project utilizes both potable and recycled water supplied by the Irvine Ranch Water District. Even with all the help, the project was not without challenges. Moreno says getting the water from the source to the beds was among the most challenging problems he and his team faced. “It’s a really large open space, so getting the water from the point of connection from where it is street side to where these raised planter beds was a bit of challenge,” he says. “We used a bit of irrigation equations to figure out pressure and elevation changes.” The entire process took around a month, Moreno says, with help from community volunteers — many of whom had no previous experience with drip irrigation installation. “I had to educate the volunteers on how to do drip installation,” he says. “So not only was it an installation, but it also ended up being used as a class on how to install a drip irrigation system.” Not only did Moreno see the installation as an opportunity to help those in need, it served as a way to potentially introduce volunteers to the idea of a career in irrigation. “Every time we do anything with irrigation, not only do we talk about how we got our start and how it’s a potential career path,” he says. “It also helps (homeowners) to understand why it’s actually really important to pay attention to their irrigation systems. That’s always one of my driving points in any kind of situation like this.” The post Behind the scenes of an irrigation passion project first appeared on Landscape Management.

The Legal Dilemma of MLMs
By Elizabeth Wolnik, George Mason University Class of 2024
April 23, 2023
Multi-level marketing businesses, or MLMs, have gained increasing popularity in the last 10 years. They often involve selling products to family and friends and recruiting them to do the same [1]. The MLM industry has accounted for $35.2 billion in retail sales in 2019 and there were approximately 6.8 million distributors during that period [4]. MLMs usually target stay at home mothers, immigrants, minorities, and lower-income communities, promising them full time income by working only part time [6]. The most popular ways MLM distributors sell their products are either directly to a customer, from the distributor or the customer’s home, or through online means [1]. Most MLM companies say that you can make money in two ways: by selling their products to “retail” customers who are not involved in the MLM, or by recruiting new distributors and earning commissions based on what they buy and sell. The people you recruit then become your sales network, or “downline” [1]. Signing up participants provides a financial incentive for current distributors [2]. New recruits are brought into the company with the “being your own boss” and “living your best life” taglines on the MLM’s social media accounts. However, most MLM success stories are from people who joined a company on the ground floor and grew their massive downline from that point, not from selling products [4].
There is no documented history of the origin of MLMs [8]. However, it is generally believed that the concept of MLMs is owed to Nutralite (formerly known as the California Vitamin Company), which produces food supplement products. The concept of MLM selling almost emerged accidentally, when distributors of Nutralite discovered that they were generating more profit by referring their friends and family to business opportunities with Nutralite. The concept known as “pyramid selling” became implemented into the company’s practices, which created a system to recognize and reward the distributors who recruited other distributors for the company. Because of this, Nutralite achieved immense growth and profits in the following years, and other famous MLMs like Avon, Tupperware, and Herbalife also followed their success [8].
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), core consumer protection principles are applicable to every participant in the MLM industry [3]. This includes direct selling, which is the most common way to sell products in MLMs. This includes person-to-person selling in locations other than a typical retail establishment and social media. Typically, an MLM will distribute products or services through a network of salespeople who are not employees of the company and do not receive a salary or wage. Instead, these salespeople are treated as contractors who may earn income depending on their own revenues and expenses [3].
Many MLM businesses are legal, but with the business structure being very similar to a pyramid scheme, getting involved with an MLM has made people more cautious. The people at the top earn the most while those who are recruited earn less [2]. Most people who join an MLM make little to no money and some even go into debt. The most common way to tell an MLM apart from a pyramid scheme is that a legitimate MLM will pay its distributors based on their sales to retail customers without having to recruit new distributors [1].
Promoters of pyramid schemes often state that people can quit their job and “get rich quick” by selling their company’s products [1]. However, in a pyramid scheme, this is not possible. Your income will be directly based on how many people you recruit, not how many products you sell. Pyramid schemes are set up to encourage everyone to keep recruiting people in order to keep a constant stream of new distributors and their money flowing into the business. Often in a pyramid scheme, distributors will be encouraged or even required to buy a certain amount of product at regular intervals, even if they already have more inventory than they can sell. Distributors may also have to pay repeated fees for training sessions or expensive marketing materials that are required by the company. A company involved in a pyramid scheme may also promise a distributor certain luxury goods like bonuses, vacations, and cars once they reach a certain sales goal. However, only a handful of distributors ever make enough sales to receive these rewards. Eventually most distributors find out that no matter how hard they work, it is impossible to sell all of their inventory or recruit enough people to make money. In the end, most people run out of money, have to quit, and lose everything that they invested into the company [1].
The FTC’s official stance on MLMs is that they are assumed legitimate until proven otherwise and operate on a case-by-case basis for issues with these companies [4]. However, the FTC does enforce laws and regulations that relate to advertising, sales, billing, privacy, data security and more that apply to MLMs [3]. When evaluating an MLM business, the FTC focuses on how the whole structure operates. It also considers the company’s marketing representation, participant experiences, the compensation plan, and the incentives that the compensation plan creates [3]. The most important case that still impacts MLMs today is the Koscot decision, which was based on the 1975 United States v. Koscot case. In this, the judge ruled that MLM companies must base distributor pay on actual retail sales to customers, and not on how many recruits they bring in or how much inventory they sell wholesale to those recruits [4].
The deception of MLM companies has been a longstanding practice, particularly in the health and wellness industry. Herbalife has an annual revenue of $4.5 billion and was founded in 1980 [5]. Herbalife is known for their ever-evolving inventory of weight management and nutritional supplement products [4]. In 2016 the FTC found that Herbalife “deceived consumers into believing that they could earn substantial money” by selling its products. This led to “substantial economic injury to many of its distributors”. Because of this Herbalife was ordered to restructure its business and pay a $200 million settlement. A social media post of the company Plexus, which sells powdered weight loss drinks, was flagged by the FTC for claiming the drink could prevent the transmission of COVID-19 [4].
In 2014 the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged MLM company Avon with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) by failing to put controls in place to detect and prevent payments and gifts to Chinese government officials from consultants of the company [7]. Avon is one of the top three MLMs in the United States and was founded in 1886. They have a total annual revenue of $5.7 billion [5]. The SEC alleged that Avon’s subsidiary in China made $8 million worth of payments in cash, gifts, travel, and entertainment to gain access to Chinese officials implementing and overseeing direct selling regulations in China [7]. Avon received the first direct selling business license in China in March of 2006. The improper payments were also made to Chinese officials in order to avoid fines or negative press that could have impacted Avon’s clean corporate image required to obtain the license. In some instances, payments were concealed by falsely recording the transactions as employee business expenses or as reimbursed third party vendor fees. Avon agreed to pay a total of $135 million to settle these charges [7].
Attorney Ted Lidow says that “There are really only two groups of people who are positioned to crack down on shady MLMs. That includes regulators, like the FTC or the SEC, or former MLM distributors themselves” [4]. Because most MLM companies include a mandatory arbitration clause in their contracts, disputes with distributors must be handled outside of the court system. Even if an MLM agrees to settle with a distributor and pay for the damages, their misconduct does not become part of the public record [4].
Arguably, the most well-known MLM company is LuLaRoe. Founded by Mark and DeAnne Stidham, LuLaRoe was created to offer mothers the chance to earn money to support their family [9]. The company grew rapidly thanks to the rise of Facebook live, with LuLaRoe reporting $1.8 billion in clothing sales in 2016. LuLaRoe allowed retailers to livestream their clothing sales on Facebook, which set them apart from other MLMs. LuLaRoe promised wealth to the people who joined the company, and said that if people sold enough products, they could earn privileges like cruises and bonuses [9].
In February 2021, it was announced that LuLaRoe would pay $4.75 million to resolve a consumer protection lawsuit filed by Attorney Bob Ferguson [10]. In 2019, Ferguson asserted that LuLaRoe was operating as a pyramid scheme, as well as alleging that they made unfair and deceptive misrepresentations regarding the profitability of being an independent retailer. One LuLaRoe executive claimed that “so many of our retailers are making amazing money doing this part time” and a “huge number of people sell $15,000 to $20,000 each month”. But instead of profiting, many of the company’s distributors were going into debt with unsold merchandise that they could not return without losing money [10].
Ferguson’s lawsuit claimed that LuLaRoe violated the Washington Anti-Pyramid Promotional Scheme Act and the Consumer Protection Act [10]. In addition to the other claims, Ferguson also challenged the company’s unlawful bonus structure and unfair refund policy. The refund policy allowed retailers to receive a 90% refund for certain unsold inventory purchased within the last year. However, many retailers did not receive the promised 90%, some waited months before receiving their refund, and some received no refund at all. The lawsuit filed in King County Superior Court prohibits LuLaRoe from operating as a pyramid scheme. The court is also ordering that LuLaRoe be more transparent with retailers to avoid future deception. Ferguson will provide $4 million to Washington residents who were deceived and lost money due to LuLaRoe’s illegal business practices, which comes out to approximately 3,000 residents according to the Attorney General’s office [10].
Even though there are legitimate MLMs that can provide an honest income for their distributors, it is important to be aware of common pyramid scheme tactics to tell the difference between the two. If promoters are making extravagant promises about your earning potential or emphasizing the importance of recruiting others, then the company is likely a pyramid scheme [1]. Promoters of pyramid schemes play on your emotions like saying that you could lose the opportunity if you don’t act now or discourage you from researching the company. If you think you might be starting to get involved in a pyramid scheme, it is best to not only research the company but to also research what other distributors’ experiences have been. It is also important to consider the products you would potentially be selling and if they are of actual quality. Understanding the costs and refund policy of the company is also crucial. Having someone who is not affiliated with the company, like a lawyer, read the company’s paperwork and contracts could be the difference between making a living for yourself and going into debt [1].

What precisely is HACCP?
When integrated into an active food safety programme, the internationally recognised Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points method may reassure your customers, the general public, and regulatory authorities that a food safety programme is effectively managed.
Biological, chemical, and physical hazards are analyzed and controlled throughout the production, processing, and distribution of raw materials and the manufacturing, distribution, and consumption of finished goods in Saudi Arabia using a management method called HACCP Services in Hyderabad.
The system is currently the cornerstone of many of the best manufacturers and suppliers in the world's GFSI audit and food safety management programs.
Safe is achieved by looking at potential risks and where they might be.
The California Food Alliance offers support in the application of systems and practises for risk mitigation. The monitoring of crucial control points at every operation is aided by the efficient food safety management system that Safe Food Alliance provides.
On the other hand, a food safety programme does not stop with HACCP. To be effective, prerequisite programmes including pest control, traceability and recall, cleanliness, and sanitation must be created and put into place. Additionally, the problem of ensuring that distributors and suppliers have a food safety programme must be handled through the creation of ingredient requirements and a vendor assurance system.
What purpose does HACCP serve?
By recognising and preventing potential dangers, a HACCP programme that is correctly executed lowers the likelihood of customer complaints or a recall.
may result from manufacturing procedures, human error, or raw ingredients. A HACCP programme increases staff knowledge, which encourages a company's goods and procedures to be improved continuously.
Furthermore, the FDA's Hazard Analysis and Risk-based Preventive Controls (HACCP) rule for food processors are compliant with the HACCP principles ("HARPC" or "Preventive Controls"). A HACCP plan is the greatest starting point for creating an FSMA-compliant management system even though it does not fully satisfy all of the standards.
A HACCP Plan is what?
For today's consumers, the fundamental food safety principles utilised in food processing
and handling are insufficient. Industry standards have far surpassed regulatory restrictions. The rising demand for food safety has numerous causes.
effectiveness systems The most significant is that "adequate food consumption never jeopardises consumers' health." When food safety is achieved in a product, only good things can happen, such as assuring business continuity and regulatory compliance, brand protection, and consumer trust. The HACCP Certification in Oman Plan is a methodology that can significantly help food safety through documentation, implementation, and upkeep (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points).
How come a HACCP certification is necessary?
These benefits might be financial, protective, or social in character. The following are a few benefits:
Increased consumer confidence in the finished product Lower likelihood of releasing contaminated food onto the market
Increased appeal to partners, suppliers, and investors
Obtain a competitive edge over similar products in the market and in trading internationally.
Observe the rules governing food safety.
better control of resources and waste gain entry to new markets and rise in popularity among food manufacturers and processors
Your HACCP plan needs to be well-written, thorough, and detailed in order to be certified.
How much does HACCP certification cost?
There will be various expenses to take into account when getting ready to become HACCP certified. Several variables, such as the following, affect the overall cost:
the dimensions of your company
The extent to which your HACCP plan has been implemented
The number of errors in every given process step and the remedial measures needed to bring them down to an acceptable standard.
The accounting company with which you entered into a contract
The certification type you're seeking
Processes for preparing for audits, such as training sessions
Before signing up for HACCP Consulting Services in Oman,
If the entire procedure is audited, you are required to ask for a quote. This procedure step will help you plan for any cost-related concerns and prevent you from overspending on the audit.

SSC — Successful Mergers & Acquisitions over the years!
While some parts of the world are going through economic distress, there are some industries which are not affected by it. Sole Source Capital (SSC) is an investment firm which focuses on a diverse range of recession resistant industrial sub-sectors. They have an experienced team which has a successful record of investing in both private and public markets. Their focus is combining the institutional reach and proven investment processes of larger firms with the flexibility to enhance the lower-middle market space.
SSC focuses on investing in established companies with sustainable competitive advantages. They tend to back strong management teams that will benefit from the team’s operating and Merger & Acquisitions (M&A) capabilities.
With a portfolio of businesses in high-growth industrial sub-sectors, they have a buy-and-build strategy that transforms lower-middle market companies into professionalized businesses with significant scale.
It started in July 2018, when SSC acquired a majority interest in Trade Supplies LLC, a distributor of nonperishable foodservice disposable items, dry-grocery items, packaging solutions and janitorial supplies. They have facilities in Southern California, San Francisco Bay area and serve customers across the Western United States with their headquarters in Los Angeles. In the same year, Sole Source Capital undertook a merger, combining Individual Foodservice with its portfolio company Trade Supplies LLC. This created one of the largest non-perishable foodservice distribution and packaging solution companies in California.
After acquiring the non-perishable foodservice distributors, they further spread their business in the food sector. In October, 2019, SSC bought a majority of Worldwide Produce and positioned them for continued growth and industry leadership. They were an established distributer of fresh produce, dairy and specialty foods in California and Nevada.
Sole Source Capital continued their strategic venture with the acquisition of Oakdale, Minnesota-based Supply Chain Services in May 2020. It is a provider of automatic identification, data capture and factory automation solutions to customers across North America. This partnership helped Supply Chain Services in their continued expansion of providing knowledgeable sales and information technology expertise.
In October 2020, Supply Chain Services acquired Miles Data Technologies, a provider of barcode, RFID and mobility solutions. Through this acquisition, Supply Chain Services was able to grow its range of barcoding and data collection solutions for clients. This underscored its technology-driven product leadership and unparalleled commitment to high quality customer service. This transaction follows the company’s previous add-on acquisition in August 2020 of Dasco Label, a leading provider of custom labels, imprinting, serialization, and barcoding services.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, the year 2020 proved beneficial to Individual Food Services, as they made 3 acquisitions in 12 months. Brady Industries, was a Las Vegas-based competitor, and IFS was an eco-friendly and custom-branded packaging, paper and plastic disposables, food products, and janitorial supplies distributor. The addition of Brady enabled IFS to cross-sell a complimentary product portfolio, to the end market with geographic diversification.
In April 2021, as the world was going through the second wave of Covid-19, Sole Source Capital was in full swing. SSC acquired Peak-Ryzex and Optical Phusion Inc, both providers of automatic identification, data capture and factory automation solutions.
The combination yielded significant technological and operational synergies as well as delivered enhanced cross-selling opportunities to a broad set of clients ranging from small and medium sized businesses to Fortune 500 companies. The acquisition of Peak-Ryzex from Keystone Capital and Optical Phusion Inc. marked Sole Source’s fifth and sixth investment in the AIDC space. This followed the purchase of Supply Chain Services and the add-on investments after the acquisition of Dasco Label, Miles Data and Coridian.
In the same year, Peak-Ryzex, acquired North Grafton, Massachusetts-based Bar Code Direct, a reseller of AIDC hardware and accessory equipment for the manufacturing, retail, consumer and healthcare end-markets.
The acquisition of Bar Code Direct, enabled Peak to serve its expanding array of clients and is Sole Source’s third add-on transaction for Peak-Ryzex, following the purchase of Optical Phusion Inc. (OPI) and Inovity Inc. earlier.
One of SSC’s PE backed companies, Dallas Plastics, acquired Orange, Massachusetts-based Hi-De Liners Inc, a maker of polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene film. Through this transaction, Dallas Plastics added fourth manufacturing facility to its US operations. The increased scale and geography enhanced Dallas Plastics’ customer base and strengthened its leadership position in the production and distribution of high-performance specialty films used in flexible packaging.
Sole Source Capital’s other successful venture, Supply Chain Services, acquired ISG Technologies, an Arlington, Texas-based reseller of AIDC hardware and provider of repairs, maintenance and managed mobility services. This was the fourth add-on transaction supported by SSC, followed by the purchases of Dasco Label, Miles Data and Coridian since Supply Chain Services was acquired in May 2020.
In August, 2021, SSC acquired an Ohio-based label manufacturer and made their second platform deal of the year. This investment in I.D. Images brought their portfolio to six platform business.
Through “significant capital and integration expertise” along with a traditional buy-and-build strategy, SSC’s M&A volume had broken records. With six deal announcements including two platform acquisitions, 2021 was marked as one of the most active years in recent history.
After a profitable year, SSC announced four add-on acquisitions in the very first month of 2022, expanding two of their portfolio companies. This doubled the size of their newest platform investment and was an excellent start to this year. The Old Parkland-based firm, which specializes in the niche manufacturing industry, added three companies, Digital Printing Concepts, Multi-Action Communications and Valley Forge Tape & Label company to I.D. Images and one company Avalon Integration Inc. to Peak Technologies.
Soon after, Supply Chain Services, acquired Access POS, a provider of automatic identification and data collection hardware. Along with, Peak Technologies added Graphic Label, which provides automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) market consumables, hardware, software and related installation and on-site services. Shortly after, Peak Technologies bought Siena Analytics. With Peak’s current supply chain and logistics solutions, Siena analytics suite helped them leverage emerging opportunities in micro-fulfillment while providing mobile and retail visibility in the omni-channel supply chain.
This was SSC’s seventh add-on for Peak Technologies, including Optical Phusion, Inovity, Bar Code Direct, DBK Concepts, Avalon Integration and Graphic Label.
Later, both of these portfolio companies, Peak Technologies and Supply Chain Services agreed to merge. The combined company will operate under the name of Peak Technologies, creating a solution provider in the automatic identification and data capture market.
Sole Source Capital’s leading portfolio company, Worldwide Produce, acquired Vision Produce, and Left Coast Food Company along with a Northern California competitor, Chef’s Choice Produce Co.
Dallas Plastics also completed its second add-on acquisition by buying Emballage MPP and extended their reach into Canada.
In October 2022, SSC acquired a California manufacturer, Westwood Laboratories. The year ended with a profitable seventh add-on investment for IDI, since it became a Sole Source Capital portfolio company in August 2021. ID Images bought Summit Labels and Precision Label in separate transactions following the acquisition of Hickman Label in November 2022.
They are looking forward to several more strategic M&A in the future.
