Final Piece
Final Photoshop Manipulation Piece
Tumblr media
My final digital piece, using my favourite bits from my experiments. I've used my folio 1 still film pictures, theme pictures and pictures of my fabric manipulations that I made previously. I used a range of techniques to manipulate and combine them together to almost tell a story. I think it overall represents my theme well as my fabric, in the background, looks like vines. As though they are reaching out over the machines and rubbish to grow past them, just like my theme of mother nature overcoming the trash we leave behind.

Mixed Media Composition
Developments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Using various fabrics, papers and techniques from my previous compositions, I have made 5 developments using my favourite. I have also annotated with what I used, how I used it and what I like or possibly dislike about it. This will help guide me to my final piece and what I want to use.

Fabric Manipulation Prints
4xA3 prints, 1 stencil, 4xA3 ghostprints
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was one of my least successful prints. Onto a plain background I scratched details of leaves while the paper sat on the ink. Then I stitched some details with green and wine red thread. I used the backstitch and running stitch. The ghost print on the right wasn't very successful but I wanted to include it anyway to show progress.

This was my next print, I coffee stained the background, a technique I used a lot in my manipulations. Then stuck down some of the flowery fabric, using cut out stencils I covered the fabric and then printed onto green ink. I wanted the ink to surround the flowers more, as I wanted just the coffee stain background to be seen as an outline. Instead it came out messier and less of an outline, more patchy. However, I really liked the ghost print I think it is very interesting. I then used a back stitch with two different green threads for detail.

For my next one I used the polka dot fabric that I tore and cut holes into it to replicate the dots. I used a brown and green ink to etch leaves onto this design, then I stitched into the polka dot fabric. The ghost print came out much different than I was expecting.

This was my final print. I bleached jean fabric and weaved it with my stripe fabric. I also distressed the edges of the jean fabric like I did in my manipulations. I stitched them together using a big cross stitch. I used a straight stencil down the middle as I wanted to keep the stitches clear from the blue ink. This stencil is the middle picture. The last is the ghost print which caught the cross lines I made onto my print, this wasn't picked up very well on the print but the ghost print was worth it.
I chose these colours of thread and ink as they were prevalent in my sound composition paintings, as well as relevant to my theme.

Paper Stencil Relief Prints
5xA3 Prints, 4xA3 ghost prints, 3 Stencils
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was my first print on the left. I took inspiration from the dark colours, cardboard usage, distressing said cardboard and bleaching black paper. I also used a tartan pattern on the back similar to the weaving and layering I done with the paper manipulation. The right is my ghost print.

On the left I took the idea of using newspaper, and the browns of staining paper like I did with the coffee. Here I used a stencil to created the rounded shape that was consistent in my paper manipulations, as well as the smaller ovals which were like the leaves of my theme. On the right, my stencil print itself that took the black ink.

The left is the print where I focused on the weaving I had in my paper manipulations. I used two pieces of paper to block out the two corners I wanted to keep ink free. These square shapes were also rather prevalent in my paper manipulation compositions. The right is my ghost print left on the surface.

Top left is my actual print, I wanted to add more green. The background was a wash that I made using coffee, a tool I used a lot in my paper manipulations. I used the stencil to create a ghost print as well, and kept both versions of the stencil.

Painting to my Own Sounds
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I have compiled my 6xA5 and 6 varying shaped paintings. The first 6 I kept to the same scale and then experimented onto to different shapes to see if I felt any different. I listened to my sounds of crunching leaves, a washing machine and a rolling tire. I have added analysis of my process as well.

Sound Mindmap
Tumblr media
A mindmap to explore what sounds would relate to my theme of rubbish (decay) and the strength of growth. I came up with these ideas, some being the subjects for my paintings previously, and some new subjects that would also be found where I took my film.

(Continued) Print -
Paper Manipulation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My last print on the left; another coffee wash background, including the weaving idea. I wanted to also showcase the burning technique that I used a lot in my manipulations, so the darker colours at the edges are what this is to represent. I used a stencil to create the square green colours. The left is a ghost print after I had scratched some of the ink off to create a little more interest.

Painting Shapes
New Compositions
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at my previous paintings to my sounds, I collected some shapes I found interesting and combined them to create new compositions. From there I mostly added colour to test how this could look. I like some creations more than others for various reasons that I have stated in the analysis that I added.

Tire rolling, with background noise of me walking and the wind blowing. Rolling tire over grit and through a puddle, then allowing it to fall over.
