fic meme, yay, tagged by @michaels-blackhat, which double yay because I’ve been wanting to do this and hadn’t gotten around to it, so perfect excuse
Author Name:
AndreaLyn, though my actual name is Manda. my author pseudonym is the first two Mary Sues I ever wrote and I’ve just written under this for so long that I’m keeping up the branding
Fandoms You Write For:
WHERE DO WE START. okay, so obviously Roswell New Mexico is the main one now, but I also did a lot of Mag 7, Musketeers, King Arthur, Almighty Johnsons, Hawaii Five-0, Stormpilot, I was writing a lot for Inception, Star Trek AOS, House MD, Band of Brothers, and many, many more.
Where Do You Post
AO3 and my tumblr!
Most Popular Oneshot
That’d be ready for my close up, mr. dameron a story that @swingsetindecember basically made me write by talking about gogurt with Oscar Isaac’s face on it, and then three days later, this fic existed
Most Popular Multi Chapter Story
They Said The Past Won’t Rest, McDanno which was a request for an auction win and became a wildly long AU
Favorite Story You Wrote
A Love Like The Sea, which is Band of Brothers, webgott. I still think it’s the best prose I’ve ever done, and it told a story with good visuals and foreshadowing without being overly smutty.
Story You Were Nervous to Post
The Doctor’s Lament, because death fic is always a weird one and I figured it wouldn’t be overly popular
How Do You Pick Your Titles
90% lyrics, 10% I had a saying or phrase in mind that made sense when I was writing it, so today’s was actually the saying that prompted the fic to be written (”darling, dear, dead”), but otherwise, lyrics
Do You Outline
SURE DO. I didn’t used to, but now I have to or nothing gets complete
How Many of Your Stories Are Complete
99.9%. Given that I haven’t started new WIPs, technically everything is in full completion except one fic on ff.net that I probably will never finish, which is a modern Pride & Prejudice AU that I do have the outline for...somewhere, if I haven’t thrown it away.
In-Progress
Currently 11! Two are actually done, they’re just tumblr fills I haven’t had time to edit, and two are WIPs I intend to post in chapters, but again, no time to edit.
Coming Soon
I love this part, so on the docket:
- Avengers AU Chapter 1, which will be posted probably next weekend if I find time to edit during Canadian thanksgiving. It’s got Michael/Alex, Liz/Max, Liz/Kyle, Isobel/Noah, it’s got Captain America Alex, Liz as Iron Maiden, the aliens as your Guardians type, and a very ensemble plot
- Tumblr fills x 4 in progress, which include a bodyguard AU, a fic about how Michael hates the past tense of the word “loved”, a follow up to one of my Professor Guerin AUs (this one where Alex made an app), and a continuation of the Mylex wing-verse
- Mummy AU, which I just want to get to a certain point before I start posting this as a WIP as well
- Sequel to No Love Like Your Love (today I wrote a scene involving flowers in Alex’s hair)
- A fic where Michael and Alex from 25 years in the future come back in time
- A darkfic which I intend to have done before Halloween with dark!Alex and Liz sort of acting as his foil
- Buzzfeed Unsolved crackfic
- And unstarted is the upcoming one that I’m most excited for that isn’t the cowrite, which is my mental replacement for No Love Like Your Love in that it’s plotty, has aliens, has Mara, has Jesse, and will hopefully be very fun for all
- And there’s a few more unstarted tumblr fills, but they’ll involve some gen Maria & Alex, a future stamp of Maribel from Dr. Isobel Evans, and a missing No Love scene
Do You Accept Prompts
I do. I tend to do it in rounds, but if anyone is jonesing for a continuation of anything I’ve done or wants something new, I’ll never turn it down, especially these days when I have time to write on the daily.
Upcoming Story You’re the Most Excited For
Cowrite with @michaels-blackhat, but there’s also one I haven’t even plotted, but it involves Michael and Alex as professors at a college, aliens, and Maria as Michael’s ex, who tells Alex that Michael is perfect for him because he’s the best bottom she’s ever met

How to design a business card
What is business card?
A business card is a small, printed, usually credit-card-sized paper card that holds your business details, such as name, contact details and brand logo. Your business card design is an essential part of your branding and should act as a visual extension of your brand design.
In this guide, we’ll run through everything you need to know about business card design so you can tell your designer exactly what you want. Business cards should above all be personal, so this guide explains what your options are for the card that’s most… you.
To start…
Whether you’re an individual freelancer, founder of a young startup, or part of an established enterprise, there are two crucial design components you need finalized before you even begin thinking of business cards:
Finished logo
Brand color scheme
Logos and color schemes are the two most important visual choices for branding. Not only will these elements play a big part in creating your business card, they’ll also help influence other areas like layout and identity.
We don’t have time to do these topics justice here, but refer to our previous guides:
How to design a logo;
Branding colors: everything you need to choose your brand’s perfect pigments
How to design a business card in 6 steps1. Choose your shape;
If you’ve already decided on a traditional rectangular business card, you can skip ahead to the second step. If, however, you want to learn about all your options, even outside-the-box strategies, keep reading.
As printing techniques grow more advanced and affordable, professionals have more room to explore alternative shapes. The printing technique of die-cutting allows you to cut out any shape you want and still print in bulk. On the conservative end of the spectrum, you could simply round the corners for a friendlier business card. But if you really want to be playful or stand-out, you can use virtually any shape: animal mascots, outlines of products your sell, or a shape that’s wholly original.
You can even build your entire business card theme around clever cutting. Cireson’s business card design uses shape to really highlight the employee picture, giving them a more personable and therefore approachable feel.
Whether or not to use creative shapes depends on the image you want to convey. Special shapes make you seem more fun and help you make an impression, but can have an adverse effect on more formal industries. You’ll also want to keep in mind logistics, such as how the card fits in a wallet.
2.Find the right typeface;
If there’s a font you’ve been using on your website or other marketing materials, bring that into your business card. The font you choose should represent your brand — maybe an elegant script if you’re an etiquette coach, or typewriter-inspired font if you’re a writer — and be easy to read. All of your text should be at least 8 pts., but more important information (like your name or business name) can be printed in larger size, a different typeface, or in bold.
Tristan’s recommendation? “A good rule of thumb is to make the company name larger than a 12pt font, and never use any font sizes smaller than 8pt.”
3.Organize your information;
Speaking of information…your business card should give customers everything they need to contact you, find you online, or locate your storefront. Aside from your name and job title, add your business name, telephone number, website, email address, and social media handles. Make sure you include all of this information on your business card so customers can easily contact you the way they feel most comfortable.
When you’re adding your information to your business card template, consider the way you lay it out. Each piece of info should be clearly distinguishable, but flow nicely with one another. A good visual flow for a business card design should start with the logo, then the name, then move on to secondary information like email addresses and phone numbers. You can always alter the visual flow by adjusting an element’s size, shifting its location, or adding additional white space.
4.Do double duty;
Make your business card work twice as hard for you and your small business. Use the reverse side for appointment reminders, loyalty stamps, or as a blank canvas to showcase something about your business. For example, if you run a restaurant or cocktail bar, include a short recipe for a signature dish or drink. Do you sell handmade goods? Use business cards as tags for jewelry, clothing, accessories, and other crafts.
Another way to make your business card stick is by turning it into a magnet. This technique works particularly well for businesses offering recurring services like plumbing, gardening, pet sitting, hairdressing, car services, restaurants, and more. Customers will stick them on their refrigerators for easy, top-of-mind access to your contact information.
The options for repurposing your business card are endless…and can ensure your card gets further, lasts longer, and makes a stronger impression.
5.Add something special;
According to Tristan, “special finishes can go a long way in making a lasting impression on potential customers, partners, and clients.”
One easy way to make your card stand out is to add an unusual design element or special print treatment. Foil accents add a touch of sophisticated shine, while embossed gloss creates a raised, glossy coating, giving your cards a hard-to-forget 3D feel.
Paper stock is another way to add something special to your business card. Extra-thick paper adds an instantly luxurious touch, while recycled craft paper lends an organic feel.
Make sure these special features are appropriate for your branding — if you’re in a less glamorous line of work, it might feel odd to add a shimmery foil accent to your business card.
Consider special finishes
Now that you’re reaching the final stretch, it’s time to start considering printers — especially in terms of what they can offer. Certain printers offer special finishes that can go a long way in making a lasting impression. See if any of these “special effects” can benefit your business card design strategy.
Embossing. This technique creates three-dimensional reliefs, making certain areas “pop out.” Like spot UV coating, you can use it to draw attention to specific aspects of your card, even words.
Letterpressing. Rather than raising the paper, letterpress printing pushes the paper down while inking it. The result is something like an engravement, typically with special ink to draw further attention. Especially useful for letters, giving your words a heightened gravitas.
Foil stamping. If you want something shiny and reflective like tin foil, you can apply foil stamping to images or even just parts of images. This also works for accenting text, if you’ve chosen a bold enough typeface.
Spot UV coating. A lot of cards have a sleek varnish to create a sheen and smooth texture. Spot UV coating is the same thing, except only applied to certain areas. That means you can apply a gloss on only your logo, specific graphics, or even a word or phrase. Use it when you want to accent certain areas over others, but be mindful of how it affects the overall composition when only a portion is shiny.

Care Package
The box appeared outside the gates of the watchpoint some time in the small hours of the morning, Christmas day. All the watchpoint security cameras picked up was a spiral of black smoke and the box just... appearing there. It was wrapped in twine and brown paper, with a “To: Aedan” tag and a “Do not open until Christmas” stamp on it. The poor little box had gone through the gauntlet being scanned by every device imaginable on the watchpoint. All confirmed. No electrical bugging. No corrosive or explosive materials. No Vishkar tech. Aedan was still in his pajamas (or rather the Overwatch logo-slathered sweats which he used as pajamas) when Jack had summoned him to Winston’s lab, at a weary 5 in the morning, to hand him the box.
“Is this from you?” said Aedan, looking over the box.
Jack shook his head.
“...Do I have to open it in front of you?” said Aedan.
“I wish I could say, ‘I don’t think Talon would pull anything on Christmas,’ but I wouldn’t put it past them,” said Jack, rubbing sleep out of his eyes.
He handed Aedan a boxcutter and Aedan cut the twine, tore past the brown paper, and cut the tape securing the box open. Jack leaned over his shoulder slightly as Aedan pulled out an old pair of his skinny jeans, a new pair of corduroy pants, several of his old shirts (the blackstar shirt, the Velvet Underground shirt, a tacky gag shirt that read ‘Pipette, Cry, Repeat,’ and two dress shirts), old and new underwear, and one of those athletic wear quarter-zip base layer wool tops in black, new.
“Well.. you won’t have to keep borrowing stuff from around the watchpoint as much,” Jack said with a shrug as Aedan pulled out a small envelope from the interior of the box. It was all done up in the fancy stationery of his mother’s Ministry of Genetics office, even embossed with a wax seal that bore the stylized double-helix of her office. Aedan didn’t think looking at something as boring as stationery would make him miss Oasis that much harder, but it did. He opened the letter.
Dear Aedan, (And I assume Jack or Ana or the ape or whoever’s reading this because they’re probably treating you like a criminal at best there)---
Aedan gave a glance to Jack, who was reading over his shoulder, and Jack gave a quiet scoff, before looking back at the letter.
This is not forgiveness. This is not acceptance. This is only so you might have slightly more dignity while you’re on that Watchpoint (if they don’t burn this package like the animals they are). I acknowledge that you are my son and my creation and my responsibility, but I also acknowledge that you are your own person, and that you can make your own decisions (however terrible they may be). You have gone beyond my protection, and you are choosing to protect a world that will not protect you--it either takes a great deal of fearlessness or a great deal of stupidity to do that, and I know you take after me, so it must be mostly the former. You know I have never been one for blind faith or sentiment, and as such I have never placed much stock in these holidays. I will say that your presence in my life gave them more merit and your absence now makes them far more difficult than they ever were before. I don’t know what the future holds for you, but you may as well have some proper clothes to face it with.
You are my greatest creation. I hope you never forget that, and I hope the world sees that, someday.
Nollaig shona duit, a thaisce,
Mum
Aedan closed the letter and tucked it back into the envelope.
“Sure manages to turn ‘I miss you’ into a mouthful, huh?” said Jack.
“Yes,” Aedan smiled a little, but then that smile faded.
Jack awkwardly patted his shoulder. “This can’t be easy... first Christmas here, and all.”
“I can manage,” Aedan folded up some of the clothes he had taken out and put them back in the box, “Any plans?”
“Same old,” said Jack with a shrug, “If you want to spend your Christmas triangulating terrorist locations...”
“I’m good, thanks,” said Aedan, picking up the box.
-----
Aedan slept in another few hours that Christmas morning, had a light, lonely breakfast in the Watchpoint mess hall and returned to his quarters at the watchpoint dormitories. He was folding and putting away his new and old clothing in the locker at the foot of his bed when he accidentally knocked the box over pulling out the pair of corduroys and a small holographic-red foil wrapped object bounced out of the bottom of the box and rolled a little bit. Aedan picked it up and found it was a Christmas cracker.
“Not without your sense of humor, are you, Mum?” he said quietly. He wasn’t sure if it was an attempt at being festive or some sense of holiday traditions on her end, or if she was making clear how alone he was this holiday without someone to hold the other end of the tube. In any case, he shrugged and took hold of both ends of the foil. Might as well, he thought, pulling on the ends of it.
“Merry Christmas!” a clear voice cut across the room and Aedan flinched hard at the sudden sound, sundering the Christmas cracker with a loud pop. He looked over his shoulder to see Rei in the stairwell down to the dorms with a small wrapped package under her arm.
Aedan exhaled. “You really ought to give me more warning before you sneak up on me like that.”
Rei rolled her eyes and continued down the stairs, “I wasn’t ‘sneaking,’” she said with a smile, “Though I am naturally undetectable by the untrained eye...” she spoke with mock gravitas and then made a chopping motion with her hand.
“Ninja,” both she and Aedan said at the same time and Rei snickered, “What was that? The popping?”
Aedan held up one half of the destroyed Christmas cracker. “Just... this—it’s stupid, don’t worry about it,” he said quietly, setting it aside.
“Huh... cool. Anyways--Here,” she held the box out to him.
“Oh--you didn’t have to--you really shouldn’t have--” Aedan started.
“I wanted to,” said Rei, holding the box out to him.
“When I say ‘You shouldn’t have’ I mean, ‘I don’t have anything to give you,’” said Aedan, glancing off.
“Aedan, I would literally be dead without you and you gave up everything to be here,” said Rei pushing the box forward, “Come on.”
Aedan bit the inside of his lip and took the box from her. The wrapping paper itself had some kind of nonsensical unicorns-in-santa-hats pattern on it and was hemorrhaging glitter. She watched with a smile on her face as he unwrapped it and lifted the lid off of the box. Inside was a round, flattened cylindrical object, roughly hand-sized in diameter.
“You said you missed your music the most right?” said Rei, “And you were also into like... ridiculously outdated stuff like vinyl or phonograms or whatever.”
“Just vinyl,” said Aedan, picking up the object out of the box, “This looks pre-crisis as well, though.”
“It’s a ‘C-D player!’” said Rei, as Aedan turned the object over, “Athena helped me, ‘burn a disc’ for it--which is what they called making music discs back then? That’s kind of dumb...like, why would you call it ‘burning,’ you know? Oh! Here!”
She pressed a button on top of the CD player, opening it up to reveal a CD covered with marker drawings and the words “Welcome to the Watchpoint” written in spiky letters.
“It’s got old and new stuff, Rajeev and Marti helped out, too,” said Rei, “We can burn another if you don’t like—“
She suddenly found herself caught up in a tight hug.
“Go raibh maith agat,” his voice was muffled into her shoulder.
Rei smiled and patted his back. “Yeah! Uh... gurra ma-hagot to you too!”
A chuckle shook Aedan as he broke away from her with his hands on her shoulders. “I—sorry,” he pulled his hands away from her, “I can’t thank you enough for this. I really—I wish I could give you something...”
“Well you could handle dishes tonight,” said Rei, crossing her arms slyly.
“Dishes?” Aedan tilted his head.
“Y’know, after dinner,” said Rei.
“Dinner—you mean Christmas dinner.”
“Well yeah— Uncle Jesse always cooks way too much and the Amaris are over in Canada and—“
“You’re inviting me to Christmas dinner...” Aedan said the words, trying to make sense of them.
“Mm-hm!” Rei nodded, all bright eyes and wide smiles.
“Your mum hates me—“ Aedan started.
“Christmas armistice. If she can put up with Uncle Hanzo, she can put up with you. She’ll be nice. Promise,” said Rei, “And I’ve got your back.”
Aedan stood there, stunned for a few seconds. “Y-yes,” he managed at last, “I’d love to.”
“You know where our apartment is, right? Be there at 4!” said Rei, backing towards the stairwell, “We start early!”
“Right—early,” Aedan said, glancing over at the pile of clothes on his bed. His eyes flicked to the Christmas cracker, “Wait!” he blurted out, picking it up.
Rei paused on the stairwell as Aedan stepped up toward her. He picked through the Christmas cracker and gingerly unfolded a gold foil crown. “It’s... not a proper present but...” he trailed off and set the crown on her head. Normally the crowns from those poppers were annoyingly loose around the head, but the thickness of her hair kept the crown well-positioned. She looked better than most in it. Or maybe he just thought she looked better than most all the time. He wasn’t sure.
Rei adjusted the crown on her head slightly and smiled, “It’s perfect,” she said smiling.
“There’s a terrible joke that comes with it,” said Aedan, holding up a small slip of paper from the Christmas cracker.
“Save it for Uncle Jesse,” said Rei, gently chucking him on the chin, “Four o’ clock.”
“Four o’ clock,” Aedan repeated after her as she hurried up the stairs. The words sounded almost magical.
“Four o’ clock!” Rei’s voice trailed behind her even as she disappeared past the top of the stairs.
“Four o’ clock,” Aedan said quietly as Rei slipped off. His shoulders slumped slightly in a dreamlike stupor, as he stared up the stairwell. He stood there smiling for a few moments, but then he suddenly perked up. “Shit, I need to cook something.”

                     PREVIOUSLY ON #BITTERCOFFEE | THE MASTERLIST | AO3
summary: #bittercoffee. bucky gains another sidekick. natasha digs up some crucial information on the winter soldier’s anti-tamper settings. it’s bad. rating: nothin’ bad here, folks word count: 1.6k a/n: oh shit things r gettin’ intense???
“You’re screwing one of the Avengers.”
“I mean, technically we weren’t --”
“No, nope,” Marissa cuts you off, “That was two pairs of pants away from screwing.”
“One pair,” you correct, cornering her in the kitchen, “And you can’t say a word.”
“Yeah,” Marissa chides, “Like it would matter -- he’s a superhero! He’s, like, unstoppable.”
“I’m not unstoppable,” it’s Bucky, rounding the corner. He’s muscling on his boots, jumping slightly to kick them on, “I am very stoppable.”
“No one asked you, can-opener!” Marissa winds up, throwing a handful of popcorn at him. It bounces off the leather vest he’d tugged back on after Marissa had barged in, “Where the hell did you even find him?”
“I didn’t find him anywhere --”
Bucky shrugs. “Coffee shop.”
You shoot him a look.
Seriously?
He quirks a brow.
What?
Marissa watches the exchange, hands tossed in exasperation. She lobs her popcorn bag into the trash, kicking the can before she starts to pace. “This is so not something we discussed in our roommate contract --”
“Yeah, well, I didn’t think I’d be romantically involved with the Winter Soldier when we signed our lease, Marissa!” you quip, moving across the room to try and calm her down.
Marissa shoots Bucky a look. The man stiffens. “Has he even seen the slideshow?! You slandered half the Avengers to make a point --”
“You made a slideshow?” Bucky’s brows are raised and he leans against the kitchen doorway.
You groan. “I had to make a point, Buck -- listen, the slideshow is irrelevant.”
“He should see the slideshow,” Marissa offers between beats, “It’s funny.”
“Is it?”
Marissa shrugs, waving her hands in a so-so motion. It satisfies Bucky. He makes a mental note to ask to see it later.
“Okay, reel it back in, both of you,” you snap, hands pushing through your hair, “Marissa, I went to the Tower to confront Stark about watching me.”
“Watching you?”
“He was having people follow me,” now it’s your turn to pace, “All because I knew about Bucky’s little hobby.”
Bucky snorts softly. “Definitely not a hobby.
You shoot him a look. Bucky raises both his hands in defense. Marissa blinks.
“Jesus,” she mumbles, “Wait, I thought he was ghosting you? Y’know, the whole break-up blues?”
“I was,” Bucky moves deeper into the kitchen, his hand touching your waist briefly as he shuffles behind you. He settles his weight in a kitchen chair. “Stark made the point that I’m dangerous and staying away from her was the right thing to do.”
His eyes go a little sad when he says it. You notice.
“And so you rolled up to Stark Tower to get your super-boyfriend back from Iron Man.”
You blink at Marissa. Her arms are crossed.
“It sounds stupid when you say it like that.”
Bucky hums. “Yeah, not the best.”
“To start, this is, like, the worst rendition of Romeo and Juliet ever,” Marissa taps her fingers, moving onto her second point and her second digit, “Secondly, does this mean I’m going to be watched too?”
Silence sweeps the room and you share a look with Bucky. He winces.
“Not if Stark doesn’t know,” he says finally, standing to full height and closing the gap between him and Marissa, “And not if you understand what will happen if you talk about this.”
You notice the way his arm flexes. The plates shift, whirring quietly.
Seeing Bucky be even remotely threatening feels out of place and weird and it makes you laugh a little. He looks so big in the small kitchenette. Marissa, though, doesn’t seem bothered.
She deadpans. “Okay, tin-foil, I get it.”
Bucky blinks back at you and you sigh, shrugging softly.
His phone, then, in his back pocket, blips loudly. Six times.
Muscling it out, you notice it’s no longer that beat up old Nokia.
“New phone?” you ask, laughing slightly as he types in his passcode.
“Oh,” a pause, moving it in his hands, “Yeah. I threw my other one at Stark’s head.”
Marissa snorts, clamping a hand over her mouth.
Bucky squints at the screen, lips moving slowly as he reads the series of texts lighting up his screen. You notice the name at the top reads Steve. He scrolls, all before rolling his eyes and groaning slightly.
“I have to go,” he says, “Turns out Nat dug up some more H.Y.D.R.A. files on me.”
“Nat?” you ask, head tilting, “Have I met her?”
“Doubt it,” he mumbles, “You’d remember.”
A little bit like a loyal dog, he retreats, dipping to kiss your cheek as he scoops his mask off the kitchen table. His stubble tickles and you screw your eyes shut at the gesture. Bucky watches you for a moment after, admiring how your nose wrinkles and your smile blooms.
“I’ll text you,” he says, waving his phone slightly.
You laugh.
Marissa sizes him up.
“Looks like you’ve got two sidekicks now, Buck-o.”
“My beautiful assistants,” he chides through his mask, walking backwards down the hall before moving to duck out your window, “What would I do without you both?”
“Probably die,” you quip, shrugging.
Marissa hums in agreement.
Bucky laughs.
Being apart of a team is something Bucky likes, though being ordered around isn’t. So when he enters the main doors of the tower and F.R.I.D.A.Y. chimes to life overhead, informing him of an order to report to forensics, he feels annoyance bite at his nerves. It’s clearly an order from Stark. The nickname Summer Soldier gives that away.
Sure enough, when he exits the lift on the basement level, majority of the team is gathered. Tony is pacing slightly, peaking over Nat’s shoulder every now and again. Bucky offers a slight smile to Bruce. The Hulks smiles back.
Bucky likes Bruce. He listens. He’s nice. He feels better after his afternoon sessions with Bruce.
“How’s your girl?” Steve asks when Bucky approaches the main HUB. “Mad?”
“No,” Bucky says, “Not mad. Not at all.”
“Oh really?” comes the distracted voice of Natasha Romanov, muffled behind the manilla folder in her hands. “I’d be mad. Mostly at Stark. But, from what I heard, she was a force to be reckoned with during her interview.”
“Hey,” Tony bites, “I was only looking out for --”
“For her,” Bucky snips, brows raised in challenge, “I’m aware.”
“It seems like she’ll be able to look out for herself,” Bruce cuts in, hands in his pockets as he toes the leg of the table, “I read her resume and cover letter and did a little digging. She’s good. Really good. Two spots from Valedictorian good.”
That brings a smile to Buck’s face. Pride. Then he sees the documents on the table. His face falls.
Beside Steve, Nat is perusing a pile of printed documents. They’ve got CONFIDENTIAL stamped all over them and the once S.H.I.E.L.D. logo is emblazoned on the front. Everyone knows now that H.Y.D.R.A. was the threat bubbling under the surface. Bucky was their tool of choice. But he doesn’t remember. Thankfully, the back-up drive of Armin Zola’s mind-hive does.
“I don’t doubt it,” Bucky hums, mind drifting away from you in five inch heels and a red blazer. He sobers up and crosses his arms, “What did you find?”
The mood shifts.
Nat drops the folder, sighing softly before planting her hands on the desk in front of them. The wall of monitors above them blink to life as she taps the keyboard, entering in her ID code. She’s quick to jump through files, to worm her way into the databank that once was Zola’s brain.
There’s one folder she hovers over for a second. It’s in Russian. Bucky’s eyes flick over it.
BIOLOGICAL READ-OUTS OF WINTER SOLDIER.
“You might want to sit down, Buck.”
Steve’s eyes are soft. Nat’s aren’t. He doesn’t sit down.
The schematics are queued up.
“Jesus.”
Files litter the screen, each in Russian, each depicting the schematics and readouts of his arm. He’s seen these before, it’s nothing new. The images of him, young and unconscious, on an operating table are new, though. Beside him, Steve shifts. Blue eyes meet his. The brevity of the connection speaks to their friendship. Bucky’s hand claps Cap’s shoulder.
It’s not your fault.
“I’ve seen this before,” Bucky croaks, “All of this.”
“Yeah, well,” Nat clicks a level deeper, into a file reading FAIL SAFES AND ANTI-TAMPER.
Bucky’s stomach drops.
And do does everyone’s in the room.
“How about this?”
It’s a timer. The clock is winding, number fleeting through.
“That thing -- your arm, sorry -- is rigged to detonate,” Nat continues, fingers scaling through the Russian files in front of her, “You’ve been nearly 4 months without being iced, Bucky. Your arm is reset every time you’re wiped.”
Bucky’s jaw clenches. He’s rooted to the ground.
“Why?” Steve asks. It’s cold.
“H.Y.D.R.A. didn’t want anyone else getting ahold of their asset.”
“Then we ice him,” says Tony, hands gesturing, “Easy enough. A quick ice, a quick wipe. We hit the reset button.”
Bucky winces. Thinking about it makes his chest compact, makes his heart spur into a kick-up. Fear makes his fingers shake. He snarls, chewing the inside of his lip. He remembers screams -- his screams. Fear. They echo in his head as men muscle him into that chair.
Please -- Please, god, no! Please -- Please don’t!
“We can’t,” Bruce sets up, voice hard, “That’s ridiculous, Tony. After all the progress we’ve made, all the progress Bucky has made --”
“I think we’re forgetting he’s a weapon,” Tony snaps, “A weapon that’s killed over two dozen people. My parents included.”
“For christ’s sake, Tony,” Steve’s face is warped in disgust, “Listen to yourself.”
Silence sweeps the room.
He hasn’t felt this way in a while. His face is pale, hands jumping slightly as he wrings them together. Bucky swears it’s the worst feeling -- impending panic looming over him. It’s like drowning in your own head.
Maybe Tony is right.
Bucky croaks. “What other option do we have?”
Nat moves, dropping the manilla folder in her hands onto the table.
The top reads HANDLER’S INSTRUCTIONS.
“We do a hard re-wire.”

Radon is a product of decaying radioactive elements like uranium. There are pockets of the substance across the country, but some states have higher levels than others.
A radon detector can tell you if your home is at risk of contamination. Long-term and short-term kits are DIY tests perfect for testing your current or potential new home.
The highest concentrations of radon can be found below-ground levels without much ventilation such as basements, crawlspaces, foundations, sump pumps, construction joints.

It’s also EPA-evaluated, meaning it meets federal standards for radon detectors and can last for up to five years.

Where to Put a Radon Detector
Install your radon detector at the lowest occupied level in your house. Radon usually disperses at three stories above ground, so placing a test on higher levels won’t catch higher concentrations.
Place the detector in a discreet location away from windows and doors because outside air can affect its reading.
Avoid humid areas like your bathroom or laundry room to avoid malfunctions. Placing it near crawlspaces, construction joints, and sump pumps can also create false positives or incorrectly high results.
Document the test. Write down the start and end date and time for the test. This will help with comparing results and deciding whether to perform another test.

Types of Radon Detectors
We recommend starting with an inexpensive radon gas test kit, and then—if the results are concerning—purchasing an electronic radon detector to continue to monitor your home.
Short-Term Radon Test Kits
A short-term radon test kit gives you fast answers. If you’re in a time crunch, these tests are a good way to get a quick snapshot of your home’s radon gas levels.
Short-term kits use charcoal to absorb radon radiation, and they typically need between two and ninety days to get a good reading. The longer you test, the more accurate your results will be. When the test period is up, send the kit to a laboratory and technicians will use a special process to count the number of radioactive particles emitted from the charcoal.
Long-Term Radon Test Kits
If you’re looking for a more reliable overall picture of your home’s radon level, a long-term test kit is a good choice.
Long-term kits use a process called alpha track detection to measure radon gas in the air over a period of three months to a year. When alpha particles hit the coated plastic or foil sheet in the kit, they make pockmarks on the surface. Lab technicians count the pockmarks to determine average radon levels in your home.
Long-term kits are more expensive than short term kits, but they’re also more accurate because they measure radon levels over a longer period of time.
Radon Detection FAQs
How Much Radon is Dangerous? Radon detectors measure levels in picocuries per liter (pCi/L) to indicate the average, year-round radon levels. If your home measures between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L, consider taking steps to reduce radon levels.
Any result above 4pCi/L should be confirmed with a follow-up test. If the result remains high, take immediate action to reduce the radon levels in your home.
Where does radon come from?
Radon is a byproduct of uranium, which is found naturally in soil. As uranium decays, it releases radioactive particles of radon called radon daughters (or alpha particles), which can then seep in through tiny cracks in your foundation or walls and into your air.
What buildings are most likely to be affected by radon contamination?
Radon isn’t picky about where it shows up. Any building—a home, school, office, store, or warehouse—is susceptible to radon contamination.
How do I get the most accurate results from my radon gas test kit?
Place your radon detector in the lowest level of your home in an area without ventilation or airflow. Follow the test’s setup instructions, then leave the area undisturbed until the test is done. Remember, the longer you leave the test out, the better results you’ll have.
What is the best location for my radon detector?
Your radon detector is designed to find out how much radon you’re being exposed to on a daily basis, so keep it nearest the lowest level areas where you and your family spend the most time.
What should I do if I find high levels of radon in my home?
Once you know your levels are higher than the recommended amount, your first step is to find a contractor qualified in radon mitigation. Contact your state radon office for a list of contractors in your area. Once you select a contractor, they will usually begin by sealing any cracks or crevices in your foundation. Then, they’ll install a mitigation ventilation system to help air better circulate and reduce the risk of radon inside your home.
Is radon mitigation expensive?
Because few cases of radon contamination are the same, each one will have a different price tag. But on average, you can expect to pay at least $500 for basic mitigation services, and possibly more if you have a trickier situation.
How is radon harmful?
The National Cancer Institute cites radon as a leading cause of lung cancer, second only to cigarette smoke, causing somewhere between 15,000 and 22,000 lung cancer deaths annually. Anyone who smokes and is also around higher radon levels are at an elevated risk of developing lung cancer.
Keep in mind that not everyone who is exposed to high levels of radon will get lung cancer. According to the EPA, only about 4% of nonsmokers will get lung cancer from radon exposure, even from greatly elevated levels of the gas.

DIY – How To Authenticate a Chanel Handbag and Spot a Fake
Chanel Handbag Authentic vs Imitation…
Take a look at this Chanel Fanny Pack. Does it look real or fake? ⠀⠀ After researching several forums and asking Chanel employees, this bag is indeed FAKE! ⠀⠀ I purchased this on Poshmark where the ad listed it as a “LIMITED VIP Promotional Chanel Bag!”. The person who listed it said she received it free as a gift with purchase (GWP) promotion in Asia so it won’t have a hologram or an authenticity card. Fair enough, I thought, I’d still buy it if I know it’s from the Chanel flagship store. ⠀⠀ Upon receipt of my the bag, it was nothing like the listing described nor was it the same bag as the photos in the listing. Thankfully, Poshmark is awesome and refunding my purchase any day now! Lesson learned…you get what you pay for.
Here's how to learn how to identify an authentic versus fake Chanel bag
Regarding the VIP Promotional bag part of the listing…
I've learned that there is no such thing as authentic VIP Chanel gifts such as handbags, wallets, fanny packs, etc. Chanel does give VIP gifts but they are small gift with purchase cosmetic pouches from their compact and foundation lines, but not handbags. And with those VIP GWP, the tag inside is made of clear plastic and must say “With compliments of Chanel. Not for resale.”
Buyer beware! Sellers selling VIP Promotional bags purposely list and sell them for under $500 on Poshmark, because items listed and sold for over $500 go directly to Poshmark for authentication. Here is Poshmark's promise to buyers:
‘When you purchase a luxury item on Poshmark, it's shipped directly to Poshmark HQ for authentication. Our team of luxury experts carefully inspect the item's authenticity. Once we've confirmed authenticity, we'll package it with care and ship it to you. If the item's authenticity cannot be verified, we will refund you immediately.'
Now that we've cleared up any questions or confusions regarding Chanel VIP Promotional Bags, let's discuss what an authentic Chanel bag should look like and have…
Verify the authenticity of your Chanel handbag by following this authentication checklist I used:
CHANEL HOLOGRAM
The hologram sticker helps to verify authenticity and can be found on a tab inside your Chanel handbag. The hologram sticker inside your Chanel handbag will have a plastic foil covering and contains a six to eight digit serial number (based on when the bag was produced). You will need to compare this against your black and gold plastic authenticity card to make sure the number on the card matches this hologram number.
Chanel authenticity card and hologram sticker have a serial number made up of a certain number of digits. Chanel bags made between 1984 through 1986 features 6 digits Chanel bags made between 1986 through 2004 features 7 digits Chanel bags made between 2005 to current features 8 digits *Please note that Chanel does not currently issue authenticity cards with 9 or more digits
CHANEL INTERIOR LABEL
The interior of your Chanel bag will have this exact Chanel and trademark stitched or stamped, evenly spaced and centered in gold or silver inside of the bag: CHANELÂŽ and all of the metal hardware should match in color: *If your stitching or foil stamp is silver then the zipper and hardware in the bag must also be silver. *If your stitching or foil stamp is gold then the zipper and hardware in the bag must also be gold.
The Chanel logo and branding stamp positioning and font will ensure authenticity of your Chanel handbag. Genuine Chanel logos have a width of 3.3 centimeters. Check the font and quality of the stamp – it should be embossed into the leather versus sitting on top of the leather like many replicas. Then check the position of the embossed Chanel logo and make sure it's 1.5 centimeters (one and a half centimeters) below the quilted ‘C' and that the width and gap of the ‘C's between them remain at a consistent at 0.9cm.
The hang tag should also be free of grammatical and font errors like this photo below with several errors on spacing and grammar…
Chanel Replica Hang Tag
Genuine Chanel handbags have an interior label that says it's made in France or Italy. Authentic Chanel handbags will NOT say “made in Paris”. Where they are made from should also match throughout the bag and on the hang tag (see photo below showing this replica as “made in Paris” on the hang tag but then “made in France” on the foil).
IMITATION CHANEL FANNY PACK FROM VIP Promotional Listing
CHANEL METAL HARDWARE
The ‘CC' lock on the front clasp should have the ‘C' on the RIGHT overlapping the other ‘C' on the left at the top of the logo and then the left ‘C' should be overlapping the right ‘C' at the bottom. They will either be raised or flush/flat finishes. Original 2.55 locks are rectangular and do not have a logo or Chanel stamping on it. The CC lock can feature either raised or flat finishes with the right C overlapping the left C at the top and the left C overlapping the right C at the bottom.
An authentic CC Chanel lock stem is made from 24K gold (NOT plated gold that will peel off after use); the press studs should feel sturdy, and of heavy quality that should not fade or peel over time.
The back of the Chanel lock hardware has stamping marks that vary based on the style of the bag and when it was made. Be wary, though, some of the CC locks do NOT have a stamping mark and some of them do. If the lock has a stamp it means that it was made in France, however, if it does NOT have a stamp it simply means that it was made in Italy. A genuine, authentic Chanel handbag will have a stamping mark on the back plate – open the bag and look at the back of the turnstile lock and you will see that the back plate was attached using flat head screws and only alongside the ‘CHANEL' clear font with even spacing.
REPLICA CHANEL HARDWARE
CHANEL LEATHER MATERIAL
The Chanel leather needs to be examined – Chanel bags are made of lambskin or caviar skin. Lambskin looks smooth in appearance but extremely soft to the touch; pebbled Caviar leather is more durable and less likely to scratch as it's made from pebbled calf leather. Caviar skin has a pebbled and raised dimpled kind of textured to the touch. Is there any glue residue on the leather? Chanel replicas glue their stitching together.
CHANEL QUILTING
The quilting pattern is most known with Chanel and you'd want to check the quilting at the back of the bag where the pocket is. Does the stitching maintain a consistent diamond pattern and does it line up perfectly between the exterior and the flap when your bag is closed? Also, does it line up perfectly between the exterior and the pocket on the back?
CHANEL STITCHING
You can also tell if the Chanel bag is authentic by looking at the stitching on the handles. Does the handle's stitching continuously and exactly stitch in the same pattern? The Chanel handbag stitching in the lining uses a high number of stitching to ensure the upkeep of maintaining it's original shape throughout it's use. There are up to eleven stitches per line of panel (one line panel is one of the 4 sides of the diamond) on a genuine Chanel bag. Also, the lining on the inside of an authentic bag should lie flat and smooth against the material (it should not crease or be loose and it should not have dents or bubbling).
CHANEL BAG SHAPE
Chanel replicas are poorly constructed and have a boxier shape and more rounded corners (see my imitation Chanel below) versus authentic Chanel handbags having a more defined, square shape.
IMITATION CHANEL STRAP
CHANEL CHAIN STRAPS
Chanel is famous for their signature chain and leather straps. Older, vintage Chanel handbags will be links without leather threaded through it. Newer, more recent Chanel handbags feature leather straps that are folded back on themselves and then stitched through each link. This is where “it's all in the details” come in, inspect it closely!
I hope this guide helps you when it comes to buying luxury Chanel handbags through online sellers and thrift stores. Please let us know of other determining factors that you may be aware of when buying Chanel bags in the comments below!

Rage Against the Machines Piloted by Squidgy Mutants
Tumblr media
If you're coming to classic Doctor Who for the first time as a fan of the new series, it can be a bit of an adjustment. It's very much like watching a play, in that the sets aren't so much realistic, as they are implications. The acting is theatric, and everyone speaks in the Queen's English. Back in 2011 when I originally began my foray into classic Doctor Who, I found the differences shocking. But "The Daleks," was a serial that somewhat mystified me.
It's not impossible to put yourself into the mindset of a 1963 audience watching this for the first time. Because if you were to update this story with flashy editing and special effects, it would still be rather unique. Doctor Who is so unlike any other science fiction, despite how many tropes it borrows from the genre. There is still, to this day, not much similar. Only ten years previous, had one of the first adult-oriented science fictions been introduced to British television with "The Quartermass Experiment." But Doctor Who stove toward something broader- a family oriented science fiction.
The inception of Doctor Who was surprisingly "rag-tag," in many ways. The show's creator, Sydney Newman, had a vision, but it was by no means clear. It was more of an intuition on his behalf. He set producer Verity Lambert to the task of seeing this vision come to fruition. Ironically, one of the most iconic moments of the show came from ignoring one of Newman's early guidelines- "No bug-eyed monsters!"
If you recall from the end of the Cave of Skulls, the TARDIS had landed in an irradiated jungle of sorts. The trees were alien and stark white. Our crew, unaware of the dangerous atmosphere set out to explore the surface of this strange planet on which they've found themselves. Ian and Barbara are still upset about having not returned home, but they seem to be adjusting to this new reality as best they can.
After a closer inspection, Ian discovers that the forest is actually petrified. The branches of the trees don't blow in the breeze because some sort of process has turned them all into a kind of brittle stone. None of them can hide their amazement at this strange forest. Susan finds a fragile flower at the base of a tree, preserved perfectly in stone. She asks Ian to help pick it so she can bring it back to the TARDIS, but a scream heard from Barbara causes Ian to hastily drop the flower into Susan's hands, pulverising it.
The cause of Barbara's discontent was the discovery of a rather silly looking reptile the size of an alligator, covered in metal plating. Due to its rigid structure, it only appears to be alive. In truth, it's long dead. The Doctor speculates that the creature was held together by internal magnetic forces that it used to attract prey, which may have also been metal. It is obvious that they aren't on Earth. The Doctor decides to get a better vantage point to map the stars, in an attempt to figure out where they are.
Tumblr media
At the top of a large hill, the Doctor discovers a city off in the distance, unperturbed by whatever process had petrified the forest. Naturally, his curious mind wants to explore this strange city, but his companions convince him to return to the TARDIS for the night so they might get some rest. Ian refuses to let the Doctor go alone, as he is the only one who can pilot the ship. Upon returning, Susan is distracted by another flower which separates her from the group. While standing behind she hears a strange sound and a mysterious human hand grasps her shoulder momentarily, causing her to sprint back to the TARDIS in fear.
The Doctor is still naive at this point in his life. He still thinks he knows everything. Therefore, the idea that Susan was grabbed sounds impossible to him. The Doctor we know nowadays would never assume what was impossible. She's seen too much to disbelieve things outrightly. But early on, the Doctor is so sure it couldn't happen. No one could live on the surface of this planet. Right?
Back on the TARDIS, Barbara is feeling a bit ill with a headache. We as the viewer know this has something to do with the radiation on the planet's surface, but our friends have no idea. Susan gives Barbara a tincture to cure what ails her. The two of them have a nice moment, where Barbara takes on a bit of a motherly/teacher role with Susan, comforting her. Ian and the Doctor argue over the logistics of surviving on this planet. Can they leave? How will they live? What will they eat? Which brings me to one of my favourite little moments in the Hartnell era- the food machine!
Tumblr media
I know it's a funny thing to love, but it's such a product of its time. The Doctor and Susan make Ian and Barbara some bacon and eggs from the food machine. Only it comes out as a sort of tofu looking substance wrapped in foil. The Doctor explains how flavours are a sort of spectrum, much like colour. They can be mixed to make new ones. Funnily enough, you never see it in the show again after Hartnell's era. It's one of those things from Doctor Who that I wish they would bring back, if only for a silly nod.
Ok, back to it. The idea of going back to the TARDIS for the night is a bit of a joke. They spend all of five minutes before going right back outside. There's no indication of a passage of time longer than a moment. The Doctor pulls some mercurial trickster shit to get his way. By slight of hand, he sabotages the TARDIS' fluid link, claiming the mercury is empty, and they need to find more. (See what I did there?) It's a dirty trick, but it gets them out of the TARDIS to seek out more mercury in the mysterious city.
Now they're all back outside, precisely as the Doctor desired. They find a little silver box they mistake for a bomb, which leads to a lot of Ian hopping around like a dolt. It turns out to be a bit of medicine that they bring into the TARDIS. They then set off into the city. By the time they arrive, they're all exhausted. The radiation is taking a toll on their bodies. Ian makes the "brilliant," suggestion that they all split up. He goes his way, the Doctor and Susan go theirs, and Barbara goes hers.
I tried to imagine what it was like to watch that first episode end, but no matter how you cut it, it looks like Barbara is getting attacked by a toilet plunger. I imagine that perplexed many people in the following week waiting for the next episode. The rest of the crew have already met back up and go looking for Barbara. While looking they find a room full of scientific instruments that make me giggle a bit. One of the things I've always found humorous about Daleks was the idea that they could manage to build complex machinery with those sucker arms. One of the machines is a Geiger counter, which alerts them to the fact that they're stewing in radiation. The Doctor now knows why the forest was petrified. He surmises it was a neutron bomb, as the city still stands.
Tumblr media
The Doctor admits there is nothing wrong with the fluid link, which upsets Ian. He snatches the fluid link from the Doctor and demands they find Barbara.  Upon exiting the equipment room, they are surrounded by robotic creatures shaped like pepper pots. Unless you've been sleeping under a rock, you'll know right away these are Daleks. Their classic look hasn't changed much throughout the years. The ring modulator on their monotone voices is just as evil and grating as ever. They take our friends captive and lead them toward a containment block.
In what may be one of the dumbest moves in Doctor Who history, under zero cover from fire Ian makes a run for it. He's immediately shot by a Dalek, leaving his legs temporarily paralysed. The Doctor and Susan must carry him to their cell where they find Barbara has also been captured. One of the cooler things I noticed this time around was that the Daleks have a small round screen in their control room that has the time vortex from the opening credits. My headcanon is that this is them, pre-time travel, experimenting with this newfound phenomena. I'd love to know if anyone has ever done a story about this.
The Daleks decide for the time to keep their captives alive. They want to know more about these strangers from the outside. The Daleks interrogate the Doctor and discover the drugs our friends found outside the TARDIS are anti-radiation drugs. They allow one of the crew to go fetch the drugs, thinking they could duplicate it and use it for themselves. The person they send is Susan, who is basically useless, so she spends a lot of time running through the forest like a moron.
Tumblr media
While in the forest, Susan meets a man named Alydon from a race of people know as the Thals, one of two dominant races of this planet, Skaro. The Thals were once a proud race of warriors who were at war with the Daleks, hence the neutronic bombs. The radiation mutated both races, but the Thals had come back around to a more human appearance, while the Daleks remained horribly mutated in their metal encasings. Alydon tells Susan that it was he who tried to get her attention in the forest and that it was also him who left the drugs as a gift. He belongs to a small group of Thals that have been searching for a new source of food. Their hope is to establish some sort of treaty with the Daleks. He gives Susan his cloak and sends her on her way with a warning about the Daleks.
Alydon heads back to his encampment to discuss the possibility of a treaty. At this point, it's worth noting that the Thals are basically interchangeable. The men are all tall, handsome, with blonde hair. The women all dress like Vegas showgirls and also possess blonde hair. They're all the embodiment of the Aryan ideal, which is ironic considering their biggest enemy is the embodiment of Nazi ideals. The main Thals worth noting are- Alydon: notable for being second in command, Temmosus: notable for being the leader and having "I'll be dead by the end of this story," stamped all over his forehead, and Dyoni: notable for being a woman with actual dialogue. All of the other ones are basically fodder for the story.
Tumblr media
Susan returns with the drugs and passes them around, which for the 60's, is a lot less exciting than it sounds. The Daleks listen in and discover the Thals' plan to broker peace, so they play along, all the while devising their own plan. Using Susan's signature on a letter, they plan to trick the Thals into an ambush.
Recurring Doctor Who villains always come back, bigger, better, meaner. The Daleks of modern Doctor Who murder without warning, can fly, are made of reinforced Dalekanium, and can even fry people who touch them. The first time we see them, it's a different story. The Doctor theorises that they must be powered by static electricity from the metal floors and pathways. Or as Ian says "Like dodgems!" at the fair. It makes the Twelfth Doctor's "Anyone for dodgems?" line from "The Witch's Familiar," all the funnier. Mixing what little water they've been given with mud from Susan's shoe, they create a sort of mudball which they use on the guard Dalek's eyestalk and push it onto Alydon's cloak, insulating it from the statically charged floor. The Dalek powers down, and they open up the casing, replacing the squidgy inhabitant with Ian.
What comes next is a lot of cat and mouse. Our friends escape the Daleks, while they try and stop them. Ian tries to warn the Thals that the food exchange is really an ambush. But Temmosus tries to reason with the Daleks, leading to his very predictable death. The Thals and the TARDIS crew escape with as much food as possible and retreat to the encampment. There, Dyoni tells the tale of Skaro's history. Ian, learning of the Thals' previous status as a warrior race, rallies the new leader Alydon to once again take up arms against the Daleks. The Doctor would rather leave altogether but learns that leaving would be impossible, as the Daleks confiscated the TARDIS' fluid link when they took him captive. It's funny that they used to have to write reasons to keep the Doctor around. "When people need help, I never refuse," is not yet the Doctor's personal axiom.
I mentioned in the "Cave of Skulls," review that elements of the story were Arthurian in nature. The next part of our story also has a bit of a medieval vibe to it as well. Our heroes must infiltrate the Dalek city. However, it's well guarded by Daleks and/or cameras at every entrance. From the back is a natural barrier created by a bog known as "The Lake of Mutations," full of deadly beasts, mutated by centuries of radiation. But it has one thing going for it- it's unguarded. This is mostly because to traverse the swamp would be suicide. Ian and Barbara, along with a group of Thals go the back way. The Doctor and Susan act as a distraction going the front way. We lose a few interchangeable Thals along the way but escape mostly unscathed.
Tumblr media
The Doctor and Susan sneak into the city by scrambling the Dalek's cameras and work on a plan that will depower every Dalek in the city by destroying the static electricity generator. But doing so alerts the Daleks to their presence and they're captured. The Daleks, having learned that they need the radiation to survive, plan to build a new neutron bomb to kill the Thals, leaving them the supreme rulers of Skaro. However, the bomb would take too long to build with their little toilet plungers, so they decide instead to explode their nuclear reactors. How this wouldn't also power down their static charge is beyond me.
What comes next is possibly the most aptly named episode of Doctor Who ever- "The Ordeal." It is exactly that. Ian and Barbara are now in the cave beyond the lake with their Thal companions. They spend the bulk of this episode trying to cross a fucking ravine, and it's brutally uninteresting. Another interchangeable Thal dies, cutting himself free to save Ian from falling as well. Ho-hum. They make their way through an opening in the cave into a rather large facility, or as it appears onscreen- a stock photo of a big industrial plant. It's all rather comical.
While in Dalek custody, the Doctor pleads with the Daleks to reconsider killing all other life on the planet, but they start the countdown anyway. Since this episode, it's been established that the Daleks count in "rels," rather than seconds. Rels are a bit slower than seconds, and while they didn't call them rels in this story, I pulled out a timer to see just how much slower the countdown was from actual seconds. I counted just below three seconds per number. The fact that they had one single Dalek doing the countdown from 200 back, was possibly the most Dalek thing ever. So stupidly inefficient.
Tumblr media
While the countdown is going, Alydon has brought a separate party through the front of the city and met up with Ian and Barbara's party. They join forces to take out the Dalek's machinery, stopping the radiation. They also take out their power source, powering down all of the Daleks in the city. While doing this, we lose more interchangeable Thals as they dance with the Daleks, fighting them off with stone tree branches and rocks from the cave. It's very Ewok of them.
Fluid link in hand, the Doctor, his friends, and the newly radicalised Thals head back to the TARDIS. In possibly one of the more shocking moments of the episode, Ganatus, a random Thal, exchanges a romantic kiss with Barbara as they part. It's not the kiss that is shocking, so much as the fact that they had any kind of romantic feelings at all. Nothing in the story up to this point had supported this. It's all rather forced, but whatever. Get you some, B!
Back on the TARDIS, our crew sets off into motion. However, the TARDIS console sparks and flashes, and our four heroes fall to the floor!
Final thoughts: Terry Nation's "The Daleks," is an iconic story. If you've never seen it, it's a must see. Not only does it establish the Doctor's oldest foes, but it's also the story that created "Dalekmania." Children went nuts for these stupid pepper pots, and it really pushed the popularity of the show forward. However, after having seen it once, I must say, I struggled to get through it a second time. The pacing is awful. It's overlong, and there is little to no plot. Though some of the musical cues they played over the Dalek city are particularly effective. It's no secret that I found the Thals one dimensional. I found the cavemen of the previous story more relatable. This is not to say they are without merits though. The idea that the Daleks used to share a planet makes them tragic is some respects. There were some interesting, if not dated, arguments about pacifism as well. The very idea of Skaro, with it's Lake of Mutations, and petrified forests is wonderfully creative. It's easy to see why this was the story that captured the imagination of so many, and never let go.
Hey guys! Sorry this was late. Been a little busy with life. Might push the Twin Peaks review back a day or two. But we’ll see what happens tomorrow. Regardless, I might do the next Doctor Who review sooner than later. “The Edge of Destruction,” is such a short story, it shouldn’t take long to write.

Get in Tormation: Thirty AF
On April 2nd, 2017, I turned 30 years old. It’s always amusing to think back on what you thought your life would be at certain ages. My fifteen year old self would have foreseen marriage and probably even children within those next 15 years. Well, the 15 years went by, marvelously spent, for the most part, and here I am. I am happily single with a hardly-empty social calendar, newly employed at a great software company (a sector I wanted to break into at a company I had kept my eye on for over a year), and a homeowner of a condo that could, realistically, not be more perfect for me. I love where I live, I love my job, I love my friends, and I love the person I am at 30. The best part is I don’t feel old at all. I feel like I’m just entering the summer of my life, blessing the spring to pass.
As a woman who has not yet had a wedding or a baby, a 30th birthday is a marvelous excuse to make something about you. For my special weekend (my birthday was on a Sunday, so we just rounded that up to a whole weekend plus a couple days on either end), I wanted my best friends to come to Charleston to visit me in my home. I wanted to reenact the blissful times when we all lived together as younger women: hanging, geeking, acting, and going out. I was lucky enough to get four of my crew to make the journey! My friends came from San Diego, Denver, Louisville, and Norfolk, VA to celebrate with me. My parents also came down from Clemson for the weekend. My folks stayed with some family in town, but their dog, my baby brother, stayed with us ladies at my house (to his older nephew Banjo’s disinterest).
The two friends who had to fly from California and Colorado arrived earlier in the week, so we got some extra quality time. Then, the two who were driving were expected late Thursday night/Friday afternoon. But, when I got home from work on Thursday, my friend from Virginia was already there (after telling me she was just leaving minutes earlier), and there was a Beyonce’s Lemonade themed surprise party all set up in my house. There was a lemon cake with sugared blueberries from a local bakery, a punch bowl with a bourbon lemonade cocktail, decorations throughout the living room, including images of Beyonce with each of their dog’s heads on her body and my dog Banjo’s head on Jay Z. They put the cat that we all used to live with on Kelly Rowland’s body. There were even the oh-so-chic foil letter balloons strung across my sliding glass door: THIRTY AF.
The Lemonade theme was not something I could have ever anticipated but it was the perfect representation of me and who I am at 30. I have to admit that I was about a 4 on the Beyonce fandom scale, until I saw the Lemonade film by happenstance. When Lemonade was released, it was played on HBO for exactly 24 hours. Then, it was available for purchase with the album or streaming on Jay Z’s Tidal, which requires a paid subscription. It was released on the same day as a new Game of Thrones episode, so that Sunday night, I saw a preview for it. I went to the menu, selected it, and was captivated for the next 46 minutes. It ended just as the film was going to be removed from HBO’s server. The next day, I bought the album on iTunes. I was now at an 8.5 on the Beyhive scale. I’ve seen the film probably upwards of ten times since it came out last year and know the album by heart. It changed the way I saw Beyonce and her influence as an artist. Lemonade, to me, was a groundbreaking visual album and touches on so much in its moment in American culture. And it solidified Beyonce’s ethos to me as a person to be looked up to, admired, and emulated. I also have a thing for lemons and have lots of things with lemons on them; so, there’s that.
My friends surprising me with this theme was wonderful on so many levels: it was timely in its relevance to pop culture, it was fun and aesthetically delightful, it came with a built in soundtrack and late night movie, and it also presented a delicious signature food/beverage flavor. I also felt proud to be compared, on the celebration of my 30th birthday as a single lady, to a powerful woman admired and looked up to by all. It was never something I could have imagined for myself, but it couldn’t have been more fun, more aesthetically perfect, or more flattering in its representation of me. The weekend was made special not only by the soul-soothing presence of some of the most important people in my life but also by the flowers sent by other friends and family, the dinner and drinks with local friends, and the giant stack of fan mail that I received.
My friends, after suspiciously disappearing into my guest room for upwards of 15 minutes (which they did all weekend-long), presented me with thick stacks of letters. It was Sunday morning, my actual birthday, and this was the crowning moment of my 30 Gifts for 30 (all of which were tagged with a special numbered, Beyonce-stamped card). I was also given a be-ribboned box of tissues, and we all cried together as my mom and I took turns trying to read them out loud. There were letters from each person there (my dad emailed me a poem he wrote for me while we were sitting around reading the letters), our surrounding friend group, but also my local friends, childhood friends, college professors, and family members. My friends worked together with my parents to get letters from all the different parts of my life. It was a very special sentiment, and the perfect act of love and kindness.
I couldn’t have asked for a better 30th birthday celebration. It all went by in a fun and invigorating whirlwind, and it was like being in the happiest dream. I still have cards and decorations all over my living room, unable to part with the sweet taste of this delicious weekend. Thank you to everyone who has helped make my life lemonade.
