What's a dog sport or event that you really admire from afar but have no real interest or capacity for doing yourself right now?
Knowing flyball people has given me a lot of appreciation for the time, energy, and training that goes into that sport. It is a very complicated set of behaviors that takes a long time to teach, and an incredibly distracting environment. Super high octane.
I have negative interest in doing it myself. No appeal for me. But damn those flyball teams are impressive.
Thank you for asking!

Flyball for Forte!
I didn't bring Faye because the instructor hadn't answered me about it. When I showed up sans corgi the instructor was disappointed as they meant to tell me yes but forgot. Oh well, next time.
Forte absolutely remembered even though it's been a while. The first thing he did was go to the corner there's been a bucket of balls in. When he found no bucket he danced around the instructor and started jumping up and turning on the ramp.
We did the first run on the larger ramp and he was getting nice turns. The second run we moved him to the box which is significantly smaller. It took him a few tries to stop barreling through the plank and actually put his back feet up on the box.
The instructor was really pleased with his quick progress and kept commenting that he lives to work. At one point I tried to use food as a reward for bringing me the ball. But he spit out the beef lung and was much more interested in shoving the ball into my hand.
He mostly turns to the right. But there a few times where I didn't throw the ball because he hadn't put his back feet up on the box so the next time he tried turning to the left. It's really funny to watch people be so impressed with him over something I consider fairly simple. I'm pretty sure Forte would stand on his head if it meant getting the ball.
But it does make me appreciate him to watch him be so eager to work and try out different solutions. He's such a fun dog and is pretty much all in for anything without becoming upset or frustrated. It also makes me grateful for his good natured disposition. For some of his runs we had another person at practice hold onto him. He was entirely unbothered by having a complete stranger hold him by the collar even though he was amped and wanted to run and get the ball.
I just completely and utterly adore him and all the opportunities to play new games his solid temperament open up for us.

Honestly the great curse of flyball is also its greatest strength: it runs in teams, so you have to make friends to play it.
(Tribble and I tried in Austin but the team we took classes with ghosted us when I tried to figure out if there was like, a way to join and come to practice; it's so hard to figure out how to volunteer and make friends that way sometimes.)
It's not my biggest priority with Matilda, but I really wish Benton had fewer tantrums about BALL BALL THAT IS NOT MINE; @coffee-mage-sans-caffeine has some concerns about whether he could cope with having to run past another dog with a ball without holding one himself, but if he could get past that hurdle I think they'd both have fun. CM is a speed junkie and he loves balls; what's not to love?

Since this is going around again, I just want to remind everyone this is not impressive or a good demonstration of a flyball run for this height dog, it is dangerous.
Clearly, he has the capacity to single stride unlike most smaller dogs that need two strides to keep up momentum, but he is not striding in the correct place to do it safely. It’s hard to see at the beginning, but he is jumping at the start line, which is way too early, and that is what’s throwing off the placement of the rest of the jumps. He needs some extra training with striding props to teach him to take a stride or two more before taking off for that first hurdle so he is landing evenly spaced between jumps, giving him room to stretch and take off again. The margin for error is so small with the way he is jumping here that any misstep or even fatigue in later races could have him crashing into the jumps and hurting himself or another dog.
