A clear horizon. An orange sunset fading into vivid pinks and purples as the atmosphere darkens in preparation for the night. Evening sun warming your face, the space around you drifting into silence as calm settles into your bones, time halting its ever constant forward march, no thoughts or worries.
That’s what it felt like, the moment my eyes met Jasper Hale’s. Like I was done searching for what my heart was in need of as soon as I glanced into those golden pools of his.

Reader
Based on the non-stop gossip floating around this microscopic high school, I’m the newest kid on the block. Dethroning the most recent to wear the title, Bella Swan, the Police Chief’s daughter.
Now, I’m not opposed to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, but Forks could strive to be a little more than a one-stoplight town and add a few more amenities. This big city Texas girl needs a little more than Forks Outfitters - the one stop shop for food, basic clothing, and hardware.
I left Dallas because my mom needed me here, my dad didn’t want to trade sunshine and big ranches for rain and freezing temperatures. They’re happily divorced, but I can tell that over time it’s worn her down. I’m just a junior in high school, but I guess she and I can navigate this together.
God, let there be cute boys at this high school, I’m begging you.
I was almost immediately accosted by what I deemed the welcoming committee the moment I locked the door to my car and began the dreaded ‘new kid’ trek to the front office of Forks High School. Stares came from anyone loitering in the parking lot before class while this overly-excited kid, who introduced himself as Eric Yorkie, began what had to be a well rehearsed ‘anything you need’ spiel.
All hopes of flying under the radar halfway through junior year vanished into thin air and I hadn’t even made it to the sidewalk yet.
“Eric? I really appreciate your help and concern, but I was hoping to kinda just glide in on my first day and blend in.” I said as we walked together through the wet parking lot, dodging the bigger puddles so I wouldn't soak my shoes before I got to my first class of the day.
“Oh that’s pretty much impossible here, newcomers are always the only thing everyone talks about. Don’t be scared to hit me up with questions later though, good luck!” Shouting that last part as he dashed off to class, turning the heads of a few close students.
A deep sigh passed my lips as I trudged on, pulling open the heavy door to the administration office. It’s nice to have someone offer help on my first day, I just wish this town was big enough so that I could get lost on everyone’s list of priorities to gossip about or stare at.
Today is going to be a long day.
“Good morning dear!” A sweet older woman announced from behind the central desk in the front office. The name plate in front of her reading ‘Administrative Secretary Shelly Cope’.
“Good morning Miss Cope. I’m Y/n Y/l/n, here to pick up my class schedule and hopefully a map of the place?” I said, cutting to the chase. The front office is a giant fish bowl to the students walking by outside, no one wants to spend more time than necessary here on their first day.
“Oh yes! I’ve got it all printed out and ready to go for ya dear, along with your locker assignment.” She says with a smile, passing the papers across her desk. “Let me know if you have any questions or if you need help with anything!”
“Yes ma’am, thank you!” I responded, half reading my new schedule - half aware of where I was going as I press a shoulder to the exit.
First period Biology
Second period English
Third period Spanish

The front office door smacks straight into an unsuspecting, gorgeous, golden-eyed fellow student, sending the papers clutched in my hands to the ground.

How to Plan the Perfect Canada Fishing Trip
Embarking on a Canada fly in fishing trip can be an exhilarating adventure for anglers seeking pristine wilderness, abundant fish, and an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Planning the perfect Canadian fishing excursion requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you plan an unforgettable Canada fly in fishing trip.
Choosing the Right Location:
Selecting the ideal location is paramount for a successful fly-in fishing trip. Canada boasts numerous remote and picturesque destinations, known for their pristine lakes and rivers teeming with fish. Research areas such as Ontario, Manitoba, or Saskatchewan, renowned for their exceptional fly-in fishing opportunities.
Selecting the Right Outfitter:
Once you've chosen your destination, finding the right outfitter is crucial. Look for outfitters with a solid reputation, experienced guides, and a fleet of reliable aircraft. They should specialize in fly-in trips, providing the necessary gear, permits, and accommodations to make your adventure stress-free.
Determining the Time of Year:
The timing of your fly-in fishing trip can significantly impact your success. Research the peak seasons for the target species in your chosen location. Summer months are often popular for a variety of fish, while specific species may be more active during certain times of the year.
Packing Essentials:
Prepare a comprehensive packing list to ensure you have all the essentials for a remote fishing expedition. Include fishing gear, appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions, insect repellent, a first aid kit, and any personal items you may need during your stay. Don't forget your fishing license!
Understanding Fly-In Logistics:
Coordinate with your chosen outfitter to understand the logistics of the fly-in experience. Typically, you'll board a small aircraft that transports you to a remote fishing lodge or camp. Be prepared for the unique challenges and thrills of landing on a secluded wilderness lake.
Enjoying the Fishing Experience:
Once you've arrived at your remote destination, immerse yourself in the unparalleled fishing experience. Whether you're after trophy-sized pike, walleye, or lake trout, follow the guidance of your experienced guides and relish the opportunity to explore untouched waters.
Capturing the Memories:
Document your Canada fly-in fishing trip by bringing along a camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking landscapes and the excitement of reeling in your catch. These memories will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
In conclusion, planning the perfect Canada fly-in fishing trip involves careful consideration of location, outfitter, timing, packing essentials, and logistics. By taking these factors into account, you'll set the stage for an extraordinary adventure in the heart of Canada's pristine wilderness.

Smoky Mountain Fly Fishing
The Fly Fishing around the Great Smoky Mountains region is hot right now. This has been some of the best Spring time fly fishing we have had in recent years. We can attribute this to plenty of rainfall and an above average warm winter. Fact is, the trout are looking up and the dry fly action is really taking off! If you have been on the fence about fly fishing…

In Praise of Army Surplus Shops
Army surplus shops are really something. Not only are they rammed full of dope military garb, but they’ve got a certain raw ’n’ raggedy flavour to ‘em which is missing from most places these days. Like the humble car boot sale or the British seaside town, they seemingly operate on their own axis, relatively untouched by the sanitised hand of modern life.
War-time wares are piled up all over the place… old sheepdogs snooze behind the counter… mysterious scents waft throughout… and amongst all this, the clothes look sick and will actually last for longer than five minutes.
Admittedly they can sometimes be a bit of a gamble, but it’s in that roll of the dice that lies the appeal. This isn’t lazily clicking the ‘add to basket’ button on some slick-looking website and then getting the garb delivered into your lap via drone the same afternoon. It’s an effort, and whether or not you even buy anything is besides the point… it’s an experience that you’ve got to earn. The ‘buying things’ aspect is just a small part of it.
From what I can gather, the blueprint for these fine establishments was first drawn up over the Atlantic after the Civil War. Up until then, most war gear was made in fairly short runs by each separate regiment… but with mass production added to the equation, military schmutter was churned out by the shedload. When the war was over, both sides had plenty of wares to spare, so they set about flogging it as a way to make back a bit of wedge. One of the big bidders was a 14 year old scrap-metal merchant called Francis Bannerman.
Francis sunk his sizeable scrap fortune into buying heavily-discounted surplus gear (guns included), and after a bit of shuffling up the ladder, bought a seven-story super-store in Manhattan to house it all. Aptly-titled ‘Bannerman’s Army & Navy Outfitters’, this shop attracted the attention of everyone from twiddle-tashed gentleman-explorer types to mercenary soldiers fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and at it’s height, needed a full island on the Hudson River, complete with custom-built castle, to store all its stock.
Bannerman’s eventually dwindled for various reasons (including constant explosions on its ‘surplus island’ caused by rusting artillery), and whilst it slowly faded away throughout the mid-20th century, it set the stage for countless other surplus shops to pop up in seemingly every small town around the globe.
From WW2 up until the Gulf War the constant stream of battle meant there was no short supply of hard-wearing clobber, and the growth of arduous leisure activities like camping, fishing and hiking meant that more people were after tough clothes that didn’t cost a fortune. And perhaps most importantly, unhinged small-town madheads who didn’t make it into the forces could now walk their Alsatian whilst draped in the clothing they dreamed about.
These days there are still a fair few of these wondrous establishments around, and whilst a few of them have been infiltrated by snide ‘military-esque’ gear seemingly designed for moody bouncers and paintball moshers, gems may still by found in the shape of old M-65s, ripstop BDU jackets or those US Army ECWCS Gore-Tex parkas (which cost a fraction of the price of usual GORE-approved garb).
As well as the yank stuff, also look out for Swedish military work pants, German cold-weather parkas, that wild Swiss Aplenflage gear and another other Euro anomalies (like the seldom-seen Irish ‘Paddyflage’).
Don’t hang about though—in the age of artificial intelligence and cyber warfare, less humanoid cannon-fodder is needed, and because swanky computers and high-flying drones don’t wear ripstop cotton, not as much gear is made in the first place. Obviously it goes without saying that the less people involved in combat the better… but still, this genuine surplus won’t last forever—snaffle it whilst you can and leave the real combat to the robots.

Fly Fishing
December 12, 2020 - (Newswire.com) - A recent survey revealed that a new trend appears to be gripping the nation, as Colorado Fly Fishing guide, Ken Robak and his site www.kens-anglers.com, take the top honors in the "Ideal Vacation 2020" category.
So, what's the big draw? Among the answers provided to "Why was it so good for you?" respondents raved not just about the fly-fishing experience in general, but also about the eminent expertise, hospitality and wry humor or their host, Ken Robak and his team.
But the accolades went far deeper than that. Frequently cited was the sheer thrill of the game, the unforgettable, almost primal feelings of being one with nature, the excitement, the fresh air - and the fabulous company of fellow anglers.
Even "newbie" anglers were overwhelmed. "I never expected this to be so much fun", wrote one respondent; "This will be the only way I will spend my vacations from now on", wrote another.
Experienced anglers, too, had nothing but the highest praise for Ken and his team. "Having the right guide with you is more than half the success," said Earl Johnson, one of Ken's regulars, "Ken goes way beyond the call of duty and makes absolutely sure you'll have a time of your life!"
But there's more to Ken's Anglers guided fly fishing tours than just fishing. Who knew that nymphing for rainbow trout in the South Platte River of Colorado could be so much fun!
Planning a Colorado fly fishing holiday has been rated as the best way to spend a vacation not just for the fly fisherman, but perhaps more importantly, also for their families. Kids, especially, just love it.
"Fly fishing getaways in Colorado have a huge appeal for anglers from all over the US, Canada and other countries, "says Ken Robak, the founder of Ken's Anglers who recently hosted groups of European and Asian anglers eager to taste the joys of the American West. “I enjoy the shared time on the water with some really great people. Each season my professional outfitter guides and I look forward to making wonderful piscatorial memories, with our fishing guests and families here in Colorado."
Robak, a former aerospace employee, is a seasoned and highly professional angler, and has been offering guided fishing trips to over forty different locations around Colorado that are suited for anglers of any level of experience for over 30 years now.
"We get anglers of all types, from the novice to the seasoned. Our experienced guides can customize your fishing experience. We cover from Denver to the western stretches of this scenic state, the Colorado River, Decker's, Middle Fork of the South Platte, to private water on Long Meadow and Boxwood Gulch and plenty of places in between. Many of our guests return year after year for the Colorado outdoor experience," Robak stated.
The upcoming 2021 fly fishing season in Colorado is fast approaching. Needless to say, the best guide services fill up fast. Robak advises you take some time and browse thru the website when you plan on booking a trip and fishing in Colorado, "Always remember to have backup dates in mind in the event of previous bookings." Robak also commented.
This year's Ideal Vacation winners, Ken's Anglers, also offer half day and full day walk-and-wade trips, and private water or public water trips are available as well. For more information on fly fishing getaways in Colorado visit, www.kens-anglers.com.

FRESHWATER MONDAYS FRIENDS AND FAMILY REPORT
James’s new PB Brown!
As I sit here back in my office, I am finding it therapeutic to write about and share one of the last days of my recent vacation / family road trip up to Oregon with the followers of this blog - gracias Juancho! After a week on the Oregon coast in a Waldport beach house rental with some close friends, my family and I made our way over to Bend to explore Oregon's east side. July in Waldport (population 2,198) with our friends was amazing - we were in a beautiful house originally built on a salmon cannery right on Alsea Bay. It had a hot tub, a killer outdoor kitchen, a nesting pair of bald eagles right in the garden and even a family of 4 otters that would visit us on their way to feed every morning and evening. We could clam for 7 or 8 different kinds of shellfish, set pots out for Dungeness crab right off the front lawn plus we had access to great seafood, wine and local beers. It was a stellar basecamp for coastal Oregon exploration. Early July turned out to be a bit of a seasonal gap or dry spot though in terms of fishing. My sons were able to mess around with various small perch and lizardfish as the big tides came and went into Alsea Bay. We even got in a halfway decent perching session on the outer beaches but it never quite scratched my itch to wade into a cold river and try and fool some nice trout with some fur and feathers... Fast forward to our second day in Bend after going on some epic hikes to ice cold volcanic lakes with hot springs and kayaking. My wife wanted to take a more chill day and explore the town, maybe get some retail therapy in with the boys. To my surprise, they both (8 and 10yrs old) opted to go with Mom on the promise of books and candy, maybe even some cool back to school shopping. This was my cue to call the closest fly shop in hopes that there would be a guide available to take me out last minute since this was unplanned. Lucky for me, Fly and Field Outfitters was able to pair me up with Quint - a younger, blonder, more compact, landlocked version of Patrick Swayze in Point Break. He had barely turned 21 the week before but he had already been guiding for 4 yrs and grew up as a fly shop kid with the son of the shop owner. He loved everything about fishing his Bend, Oregon home waters and has been tying flies since his first vise at 11. This is the kind of person I enjoy fishing with, the kind of person anyone would be lucky to fish with. While we were on the water (Deschutes river) he'd geek out about the insects, and would pull out a hairnet to place over his landing net just to sieve the river for fun and make note of the aquatic bugs and worms. After a few dinks and random whitefish, Quint sized up my casting / downstream stack mending skills (or lack thereof) and decided to move us to a bit more technical section of the river to try our luck at some hail mary drifts for some bigger brown trout that push up out of a reservoir at this time of year and flow levels. The setup was not unlike scoping our beloved LA River for mud marlin from up on the pavement. Walking along steep scree banks (these were gravel covered instead of graffiti covered) and looking for higher vantage points to get visuals dialed in on either fish or likely slots that would hold good fish. After about a 30 minute scramble along the bank, he found a section he wanted me to go to work on. The set up he picked was a long (40 yds) flat riffle with a deeper (3-4ft) slot on the far bank that funneled the water into a nice tail-out that shot right into a slight undercut bank before the next bend in the river. It was pretty straightforward with fast lane water tight to me and a slower lane over the deep slot that sped up again right at the tail-out with turbulent water shooting into the undercut. The primary target zone was the end of the slot and the secondary was to try and give any fish hanging in the undercut a good look at the big black bunny leech. After what seemed like 25 cookie cutter drifts I finally made contact with something that started pulling back and running with frenetic head shakes - it did not feel like the telltale slower, more purposeful head thumps of a bigger trout. This was strong, fast and hyper. With a few quick drag pulling bursts, this fish finally showed itself and came into the net - it was another whitefish. About a 20" model that to me, looked a whole lot like a bonefish in shape, size and even coloration. I was psyched. I had never caught them before and after two of them on the fly, I can undoubtedly say that the disdain and thumbs down they get from most river anglers is unwarranted. They're excellent fighters and they make perfect holiday gifts when smoked and served with pickles and onions. At this point my shoulder and forearm were getting a bit tired of repeatedly trying to turn over a 4" wet rabbit fur strip and cast it upstream with a stiffening breeze coming over my right ear. 5 more casts plus another 5 more finally led to one final thump at the very end of the drift right was I was about to start stripping the fly back in for the next cast. This thump felt like a snag though at first. It was solid and stationary for a brief second before it telegraphed those initial side to side head swings that say "I'm big". I gave Quint a thumbs up to let him know that this was not another frenetic whitefish. He looked at me with a worried smile and grabbed the landing net. We both glanced downstream to mentally formulate a game plan to get this one into the net. Neither of us had seen in yet but we could tell by the sound of the drag and the deep parabola in the 5wt that it was what we were looking for. I could not recall the last time I had a trout pull this hard and heavy on me. I felt under-gunned with the 5wt and the heavy fish in the current. I chased it downstream for about 25 yds and managed to doge a few submerged logs and get it into a slower, deeper pool with a flatter bank. Twice it made U-turns to try and get back upstream into the faster water only to come to a stalemate with me before it would make another run into the pool. We got our first peak at its shoulders and all I heard from Quint was a lot of profanity. It was thick and it was a deep golden bronze color. He was getting more and more nervous with each attempt by the fish to hide under the submerged logs. I was getting worried that the hook would wear a bigger hole in the fish's mouth and somehow come lose. Luckily after another 5 minutes, the fish started to tire and it somehow steered itself into a shallow, dead end log jam that was relatively snag free. Wrong move Mr Brown. Quint slid the net under its head and we just sat there and smiled. It was definitely my personal best brown trout by a few inches and just a gorgeous specimen overall. Beautifully colored and marked, perfect fins and an athletic build, not the pot bellied monster browns you find lurking in deep lakes. Its adipose fin was about 3/4" thick and the size of a large scallop. Its broad tail was something Sir-Mix-A-Lot would be gloating about. We both took turns posing with the fish and admiring it as it gathered its strength back after the drawn out fight. I dipped the front of the landing net in the current and it immediately shot out into the pool. All I could do was smile and watch the water. We had about another 45 minutes left on the guided trip clock but I was happy to call it in early and end on that note.

Avalanche Outfitters to provide SENSATIONAL horse rides, and the McClure Pass Wagon Road Trail to serve up VAST panoramic mountain views
As the final finishing touches are made to the fledgling Aspen Marble Detour, or AMD as I have come to term it, setbacks and misunderstandings obviously will occur, even with the best of intention. Therefore perhaps not surprisingly, tweaks and fine tuning must necessarily take place well in advance of offering our unique touring service to the paying public. Everything must be in place and fully functioning. No time now for indecision. Should changes need to be made, then now is the logical time to set about them; which is entirely what Kris and I had on our mind as we set out to do just that – place one final tweak upon a tour that has now firmly cemented itself into place over the past weeks and months.
And so, in regards to Aspen Marble Detour development, one major change to the tour route is that we no longer plan to visit Avalanche Ranch, due to their being so busy as to be unable to handle our little black bus. Rather, we now include a brief stop in the town of Carbondale, which as you will see toward the end of this post, is known locally, nationally and internationally as something of a Colorado Rocky Mountain Gem, with a slew of fine dining restaurants, galleries, public art installations, and an altogether cool vibe that will no doubt have you wanting to return one day. During our 20 or 30 minute, 4.30 PM, visit however Detourists should get a feel and a flair for the place, as there generally always seems to be something or another going on, somewhere abouts – it’s just that sort of place.
It was with these two objectives in mind then; a replacement for the ranch; and a user-friendly walk that would give the energetically inclined plenty of room to stretch their legs, and the less lively, or physically able, a gallery of views in return for a minimum in the way of, well, effort. It is not forced march after all, in any way.
The results of our quest comprise of a supremely organized company called Avalanche Outfitters (unrelated to Avalanche Ranch), located right behind the historic coke ovens in Redstone. Together with the old abandoned McClure Pass Trail, conveniently located pretty much right where we need it, in the great crook of the Crystal River Valley, with views sweeping off in all directions, I think we can safely say that we found just what we were looking for.
Once a target is set and a plan is laid out, it is a rare foray that does not bear fruit. And so it was the other day, Sunday July 14, that Kris and I set out to fit the two final jigsaw pieces into the great Aspen Marble Detour puzzle. What you do, and what you get up to on the day, is completely up to you. But even if you yourself don’t ride the horses, bikes, or paddle boards. Or if you chose not to do the fly fishing yourself; you will still enjoy the pleasure of watching others partake, taking in the fresh mountain air, and feasting your eyes upon such vast panoramic views that they are no doubt destined to form a brilliant patchwork of memories sure to linger in your mind for years to come.

Hot it was as we set off on our quest, and I mean hot. Humid too, as the monumental cumulus nimbus clouds erupting over Mount Sopris amply testify.

Our marvelous 2019 Ford Transit 350 XLT pretty much arrived so very perfectly suited to our needs that aside from removing two of the four rear seats in order to provide more luggage space, having the lettering installed upon the two sides and rear window was practically all that we were require to do in order to get her Detour ready. She even augments her smooth automatic gear box with a six speed manual shift, which provides perfect power and traction when maneuvering the Crystal River Valley’s signature twisty, steep, and winding mountainous roads. And so rest assured, as we climb McClure pass later in the Detour, you will be in safe hands with me, for years a professional chauffeur and tour guide, at the wheel of this wonderfully engineered and equipped beauty.

I mean, look at that vehicle. Just the perfect size for what amounts to the perfect group for such a grand and unspoiled valley as the Crystal River: as size very much matters when it comes to tour buses! But with a wheelbase, square footage, and emission near that of a single private car, I am able to swiftly and comfortably transport 10 people / 12 if two of them are children. In other words, it is not difficult to imagine the procession of vehicles, all in a line, bumper-to-bumper, front and rear of the Aspen Marble Detour Bus, superimposed upon the above picture; reducing a beautiful grassy verge into a solid row of cars.

And just look this for a slice of the Old Wild West? You will not get more “Colorado Rocky Mountain” than this.
As yet I have to meet anyone actively involved in the running any of the businesses scattered along the Aspen Marble Detour who wasn’t born in the area, moved here many many moons ago, or decided to invest their lives and livelihoods in the purchase, or start up, of a business of some sort – for there are many varied excellent entrepreneurs plying their trade all along the Crystal River Valley, as you will discover the deeper you dig into the Detour. As far as examples go, you need look no further than Avalanche Outfitters. Believe me – this is the real thing, the real McCoy, the wild, wild west at its very, very best. Not only that; these are local people who absolutely know for sure just what they are doing and what they are about. First things first, and in the spirit of full disclosure, it must be known that I know nothing about horses, although I have always loved watching them, and like to get close to such magnificent beasts at every opportunity. Clever eyes, intelligence, speed, elegance and power – these superb animals would seem to have it all. And as I gingerly approached the corral I soon felt the steady aim of many pairs of eyes bearing down upon me and monitoring my every move.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
Again, just to be clear, I am far from an expert on horses – beyond a lifelong fascination for them. But from what I do know of them, which has mainly been garnered from Kris and her youthful experiences riding, and most importantly stabling them – these look to be some very lucky animals indeed. No poop and therefore no flies, for the place was pretty much spotless, with none of that sweet-sticky horsey-hay smell that usually permeates the air around so many horses.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
They were watching me alright, with an intent stare that never left my mind, for each time I stole a glance back, there they were; gazing, pleading I imagine; “pick me, please pick me, pick me. Me!” Because believe it or not I used the same tactic many times during my hitch hiking years. But one instance that springs to mind was when I stared down the tobacco farmer who paid me to pick his leaf up in London, Ontario, but I digress. Clearly many of these intelligent looking horses had had enough of the corral, and wanted off, and away, with me on their back.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
Well, some did and some didn’t. One or two appeared content to take a timely afternoon snooze (it was bloody hot), while others continued their long patient stare.

If any further evidence was required that this outfit is geared for success, one need look no further than this well organized, clean and efficient tool shop. Everything in its place – and a place for everything.

See what I mean about that stare? I will one day ride this horse, I know it.

However, given my utter lack of saddle-back knowledge, I imagine that I will first be fitted with, dare I say it, a sleepy head? Perhaps I am wrong, and these two fine looking animals come out of the blocks like thunderbolts, we’ll see. But when the time comes I will simply leave such matters to the experts – for experts here they are. No one runs an outfit as sharp as this without knowing a great deal about the business they are in, and I look forward to bringing them many a happy customer before the summer and autumn seasons are through.

Upon taking our leave from Avalanche Outfitter’s wild west corral, our second task of the day was to nail down, once-and-for-all, which of the many, many trails crisscrossing the Crystal River Valley would serve as the timely mid afternoon walk, stroll or mini hike. Quite definitely not a a forced march, but a chance for Detourists to stretch their legs and experience verdant Rocky Mountain scenery, with lots of magnificent panoramic mountain views along the way. Not too steep, with a good reliable footfall, and with a nice easy, consistent gradient. Now, just where would such a place exist?

Well, as it happens, right here! As you can see the AMD Bus is safely parked, away from the road, and under the shade of a small grove of cottonwoods so as to keep the vehicle cool as we amble along the flattish trail leading down to the right hand corner of the picture. What you are actually looking at is the old turn-off for the grueling climb up McClure Pass. At one time Highway 133, as we know it now, would have veered at this turn, and zig-zagged its way up the old dirt wagon road.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
Yes, believe it or not, this was once what Highway 133 is now. It wasn’t too long ago when huge sweating horses, mules and oxen heaved their way up and down this now verdant strip of vegetation. Loaded with people, cargo and animals, there was little or no stopping once this epic climb/descent was embarked upon. And although it may at first glance, from a pedestrian stand point, look quite impassable, I can assure you that, for we unburdened humans, it constitutes a very easy and navigable path, comprising a consistent 8 degree slope, as it winds its way deftly through the meadow grass and wildflowers. It is almost as though it had been plotted, placed and maintained by a slew of imaginative and attentive groundskeepers; with plenty of shady spots in which to rest, and convenient rounded and flat topped rocks upon which to perch.
And as we walk, view-after-view of pure natural scenic grandeur open up in two great galleries, first on our left, then right, as we round the first hair-pin bend, and make our way to the second, from where we are able to look straight down upon the bus from a lofty perch several hundred feet above. I will accompany the nifty and energetic to this point, because to reach the second bend definitely is something of a hike. But everyone will decide for themselves just when they have had enough of the climb, and will chose the point of their return accordingly. Either way, we will all meet up at the bus, as there are no paths leading off the old road. And so right on cue we will be on our way, most likely to Redstone, but perhaps to the viewpoint atop of McClure pass. It all depends on how that day is going – weather etc., and what the group preference that day prefers.

Kris liked the path right away, and so did I. It sort of reminded us of many old abandoned railway tracks that we have enjoyed walking in various parts of the world – particularly our beloved Devon and Cornwall back in Old England. Yes, it really is that green and verdant. Never in our 16 years in the Roaring Fork Valley in fact have we ever seen it quite as translucently green as this: fantastic foliage, phenomenal and profuse wildflowers: scenes and photographs that are not likely to be repeated any time soon; for this year has proved something of an exception, and exceptionally beautiful the countryside is this year.

Below reveals the view as we set out and along the old wagon trail. Spectacular as it may be, once we begin to saunter up the hill things soon change, and quite dramatically, as the valley opens up, and the views stretch out for miles in all directions, just as far as the eye can see. For this is where the valley turns what amounts to be a 90 degree bend, adding a spectacular twist to already quite stupendous views.

~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
Such is the gentle, even, and foot-sure nature of the trail, and so wide is the old wagon road bed, that walking, talking and taking in the view is a cinch. Maybe not all at the same time necessarily, but vast panoramic views pop out from behind every tree and bush, with spectacular panoramic vistas presenting themselves at every opening. And even though the gradient remains gentle and consistent at 8 degrees, within a very few moments we find ourselves lifted way up and off the valley floor, and into an alpine scene of magnificent and majestic proportions. For if there are better pristine Rocky Mountain views to be had in all of Colorado, so easily and relatively effortlessly attained as this, then I have yet to see them.

~ ~ ~
But the real clincher for me is the ‘all abilities’ aspect of the McClure Pass Wagon Road walk. For if walking is not your thing, or you are unable or do not wish to exert such effort, and wish to simply rest and admire the views and the wildflowers, then that is exactly what you can do, for they are literally everywhere, almost right at the head of the trail. At least they were this one lovely July Sunday afternoon. But as the wildflower season around these parts does not usually begin until August, I am guessing that the trail will harbor wildflowers of some sort throughout the rest of summer and autumn season.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
You see, that’s the beauty of the Aspen Marble Detour, what you do, what you partake in, how you spend your time is entirely up to you. The afternoon walk for instance will take 30 minutes or so out of a 9 hour day, and during that half-an-hour or so you can rest, use a bit of zest, careen up the zigzags with me, or amble along at your own pace; the choice is entirely yours.

Kris for instance, at this point along the way, saw no need to keep barreling on, as is my usual fashion, and chose instead to drink-in the view at her leisurely-leisure.

Well, you can see why.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
As I mentioned earlier, the placement of the walk could not be more dramatic, for the old wagon road extends from the point marked McClure Pass Viewpoint on the map below – a strategic lookout to which we will ascend in the bus at some point during the day – to an intersection whereby a straight line upwards would meet Highway 133: that is our wagon road trail. Quite the best seat in the house when it comes to panoramic views I would say.

Finally, in order to replace the genuinely interesting and authentic retail experience as offered by Avalanche Ranch, I have decided to add the energetic Colorado Mountain Town of Carbondale to the Aspen Marble Detour as a way of capping the day with one last splash of, well, whatever it is that Carbondale offers; for there is a lot, as you are to discover.
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
In actual fact, Carbondale as an entity is somewhat difficult to describe. For just as it has been named ‘Best Place To Live’ in ‘Colorado’, ‘America’, and perhaps even ‘the world’ (who knows?): for a place so universally known, and of a size to cash-in on a huge scale, the town appears to have better things to do than pander to the legions of summer tourists drawn to far busier places further up the road. No, a distinct air of enjoyment pervades the air in Carbondale, and it is not coming from mass tourism, I can assure you that. Absolutely, tourists are welcome. Very welcome in fact – as I have always enjoyed the place myself, and felt well received as well, come to think of it. It’s just that the place has not thrown itself upon the alter of tourism. Rather, Carbondale folk enjoy their town, their way of life, partake deeply within it, and invite any and all to come and join in, as you will experience yourself late in the Aspen Marble Detour Day.

Strange Imports for instance; I have been through those doors quite a few times and have always found their display to be interesting and intriguing. You never really know just what you are going to encounter, but compared to most things you see elsewhere, they really are quite strange indeed. Excellent quality too I might add. And very much worth five or ten minutes of anyone’s time, in my opinion. Another worthwhile visit is Kahak Fine Arts & School for its vivid, graphic, colorful canvases. Other attractions include the Marble Distillery, for its boutique shot bar, the Clay Center, for excellent local ceramics, a brew pub, several galleries, a pizzeria, coffee shop, burger bar, and so on and on. This little place would seem to have everything, including a vital and strong sense of community.

Of course, one crucial aspect of Carbondale’s persona is its affinity to, and support for, the arts. A stroll down Carbondale Main Street is akin to an art walk promenade. And for that reason no two visits to the place ever seem quite the same, as the artwork moves through a quite swift rotation. Plus, I have no doubt that much of it sells, for as you can see the bar is set refreshingly high.

What I also find refreshing about Carbondale is that culture and counter culture would appear to get along – quite nicely in fact.

Yep, all-in-all, and although I arrived at the decision in such a roundabout fashion, after Sunday’s revisit I am now rather happy at the revision, and delighted to bring the Aspen Marble Detour to such a delightful Rocky Mountain Town as Carbondale, Colorado. Just as I am thrilled to add a half-hour stroll along the old McClure Pass Wagon Road to the afternoon proceedings.
Mission accomplished then. Now all that is left to do is get the Aspen Marble Detour on the road, up and running, and giving people their one very memorable day, indeed.

Fishing is a popular pastime for tens of millions of people. However, this recreational activity — often seen as a great way to enjoy a laid-back day off work — derives from authentic food-gathering practices from generations ago. Catching fish to survive is a practice still in place today in some parts of the world, and on a grander scale to supply the needs of restaurants and seafood connoisseurs the world over.
Maybe you’ve had some experience fishing in the past but never caught and cooked your fish, or perhaps you’re entirely new to the concept of fishing for food. Either way, fishing is a discipline that offers many layers of advancement. You can begin your career with a simple spinning rod and work up to becoming an expert open-water fisherman or fly fisherwoman. And you can enjoy some excellent meals in the process!
Why You Should Eat Fish
In case you didn’t already know, fish is a delicious and nutritious source of food packed with protein and certain fatty acids you would have a hard time finding anywhere else. We encourage you to do your homework about the health of fisheries in your area, so you’re not negatively impacting local populations, and to understand which kinds of fish might get exposed to environmental contaminants like mercury. But as a general rule, fish are healthy to eat and provide an excellent source of calories in the wilderness.
Wild-Caught Fish Is Better
Did you know one-third of high-quality American-caught fish gets shipped to foreign markets? It’s true: We don’t eat enough fish in this part of the world to justify holding on to the delicious catch many commercial fishing operations bring in. That means by eating wild-caught fish, you are giving yourself a much better chance to enjoy some delightful fresh-caught salmon, trout or other native varieties of fish. And you’ll be saving a considerable amount compared to what you’d pay for it at the market or in a restaurant.
How to Begin When Learning to Fish
Even if you’re completely new to the practice of fishing, you’ve probably observed the fundamental equipment needed to fish — that is, a fishing rod with proper tackle and a place to fish. Though you could go all-in with more complicated or expensive gear, the bare-bones list of a rod, tackle and a fishing hole is the best place to start. From there, you can add more advanced tactics that will help you catch more or different types of fish. For instance, you could learn how to use live bait, how to fish with a fly or even get in a kayak and paddle to the fish. Since fishing adapts well to different levels of physical activity, you can decide how much effort you’re willing to make.
The first thing you’ll probably want to learn is how to rig your fishing rod and cast. You can find a basic spinning rod at any sporting goods store. Make sure you have an idea of what kind of fish you might catch in the area, so you don’t buy a pole that’s too weak and that might break while fighting a fish. There are thousands of different reels out there, and you can choose something more complex if you’d like. However, a simple spinning reel that is reliable and offers adjustable drag should do the trick for beginners.
A local fishing hole is a good idea if you need to practice rigging your rod and tackle. However, take note that a venue like this may not going to let you keep the fish you catch. You might not want to anyway, given the conditions you may observe at some of these locations. So, once you’ve learned how to tie some weight and a swivel to the end of your rod, do some looking online for good fishing locations nearby. You might need to investigate renting a boat, or even taking a guided fishing trip while you’re new, to get access to the best spots.
Catch and Cook
When you add the process of cleaning and cooking a fish to the equation, there are a few additional things you should have at the ready while fishing. The first is a vessel to store your catch in. On an ocean fishing boat, there will probably be a live well, which is a special water-filled compartment that allows fish to remain alive until you return to the land to process them. More than likely, if you’re fishing from shore or on a riverboat, you’ll have an ice chest and can store your fish there after you catch them. When fishing from a small boat, you can also use a stringer, a line that keeps most of the fish in the water.
Killing your catch might be the most unpleasant part of this process, but it’s necessary. Many fishermen keep a billy club for this task. Once your catch is dead, you can store it in your cooler and ready it for cleaning. A poorly processed catch is bad eating, so learn how to efficiently clean your fish using a fillet knife to open the fish from head to tail and remove the organs, making as few cuts as possible and cleaning your knife frequently.
With your cleaned and processed fish ready to cook, now you’ve arrived at the fun part. Fish recipes date back thousands of years, and even if you’re not so thrilled about the process of catching fresh fish, you can become an expert cook and enjoy some exquisite cuisine that will impress your friends. Some popular methods of making fish include baking it, cooking fish whole in foil on the grill and making fillets — or, with larger fish, dividing them lengthwise into steaks. Depending on your culinary skill, you can move into more advanced dishes like kebabs, ceviche or seafood pasta.
Don’t forget to share the catch with friends and family. It’s the law in many places. If you catch certain types of fish, it’s illegal to resell it without a business license. So don’t make that mistake and get busted — make everyone think you’re really generous and you wanted to give that 20 pounds of Alaskan salmon away!

The Best Fishing Guide
Steve Huff is lxv. He has been a fishing guide for the cardinal of these years, initial within the Florida keys and currently within the swamp town space, wherever he captive in 1996 along with his bright-eyed spouse, Patty. Huff’s specialty is fishing the thin water flats for malacopterygian, bonefish, permit, and snook, and he has guided his shoppers into unnumberable world-record fish. Last year he was inducted into the International sport fish Association’s Hall of Fame, that is that the fishing world’s town. In his book, A Passion for malacopterygian, Andy Mill calls Huff “bar none, the most effective malacopterygian guide alive, the most effective there was and also the best there ever are.” Marshall Cutchin, a former Keys guide and also the editor and publisher of the fly fishing web site midcurrent.com, goes even any, occupation him “the best guide who’s ever lived, period.”
This type of speak embarrasses Huff, United Nations agency prefers to shower accolades on others. “Steve could be a very humble guy,” says Sandy Moret, United Nations agency owns a fly search within the Keys and has fished with Huff for 3 decades. For Huff, it’s all pretty easy. “I’m simply a fishing guide,” he says. “My job is to form AN angler’s dream come back true.”
His own dreams area unit a part of the equation, as well. Guiding, at its essence, could be an unselfish endeavor, meshed to the happiness and success of the paying client, the “dream creating.” except for Huff, there's the rush—of being on the water nearly on a daily basis and making an attempt to work out the puzzle bestowed by the tides, the wind, the clouds, the fish, and also the angler’s ability. The climax, that final puzzle piece, is that the golf shot and landing of the guided angler’s targeted fish. Huff can’t live while not that rush.
Huff was born and raised in Miami. once he was 10, his father gave him a fishing rod, the primary piece of tackle he’d ever in hand. His father left the future day. Huff would neither see nor speak to him once more. “He was AN alcoholic and a gambler,” Huff says. “He in all probability died during a ditch somewhere.”
Huff is tough regarding the impact that his father’s going away might need to be had on his life. “I assume we have a tendency to age to be no matter we have a tendency to were meant to be,” he says. And anyway, thereupon rod, his father provided him with the primary tool for what would become his life’s permanent passion. Huff took the rod, solid into a Miami canal, and caught a two-pound robalo. “That was it,” he says. “I was done.” He biked everywhere town, fishing in backyards and canals. {one day|at some point|in the future|someday|sooner or later|in some unspecified time within the future} he sneaked down a hole in the middle of a causeway bridge. He solid a lure from a ladder and caught a twenty-seven-pound robalo, to the current day his largest. He knew then that he would be a guide sometime.

While attending the University of Miami, Huff studied marine biology. once he graduated, he told his mother of his career plans. She wasn't happy. “She told ME that fishing guides were a bunch of drunks and bums which i might ne'er quantity to something,” Huff says.
Still, she cosigned a loan thus Huff might purchase his initial guide boat. He captive to the Keys, and on November 1, 1968, he took out his initial shopper. “Poor bastard,” Huff says. The day was windy and overcast and fishless. The guy ne'er came back. “I had no clue what i used to be doing,” Huff says. “I didn’t even grasp what I didn’t grasp.”
If you want fishing T-shirt visit store https//:rasyta.com/fishing
But Huff resolves to work it out. He poled for miles, into the teeth of twenty-five-knot headwinds. (“Best dray horse I’ve ever seen,” Cutchin says.) He scouted and discovered new spots. He tied his own flies, designed his own boats, fictitious new fishing knots. He stayed out longer than anyone else, creating the run back to the dock in complete darkness. He ne'er gave up.
And at intervals many years, people that fished with him once ne'er needed to go away him. “He’s intense and he expects you to match that intensity,” says one among his shoppers, the author Carl Hiaasen. “It causes you to a more robust angler.” Bill Hassett, an equipment store owner in St. Louis, Missouri, has fished with Huff for cardinal consecutive years. Lenny Berg, AN specialist in Fort Pierce, Florida, has been with him for xxxv years. Hiaasen could be a relative newcomer, having fished with Huff for fifteen years. “I simply feel lucky that he let ME on his boat,” Hiaasen says, laughing.
Those who do fish with him tend to urge greedy. The late Del Brown once reserved Huff for cardinal days one year to fish for allowing within the Keys. Tom Evans, holder of sixteen world records, once fast him in from March one to Gregorian calendar month fifteen. Huff currently incorporates a list of regarding fifteen shoppers, to whom he's intensely loyal (he turned down a visit with George H. W. Bush in favor of 1 of his already-booked regulars). He has taken on specifically one new shopper within the last twenty years.
His shoppers became his dearest friends. “When you’re during a boat along for 10 to 12 hours on a daily basis, you quickly get past the tiny speakers,” Huff says. “You laugh and you cry alone.” One shopper perpetually complained regarding his spouse for years. Hoping to vary the topic on the water someday, Huff flat out told him he ought to divorce her. the person referred to as back per week later and told Huff that he had filed divorce papers. “I said, ‘You’ve ought to be excreting ME,’” Huff says.

A snook.
As with all intense relationships, complications will arise. Huff not fishes with one among his longest-tenured shoppers. “One day I simply told him what he was: a selfish prick,” Huff says. The guy asked Huff why it took him ciao to work that out. to the current day, the 2 still speak on the phone many times a year, unable to fully disconnect. one among the saddest endings came with Del Brown, United Nations agency posthumously still holds twelve world records. Huff and Brown had fished along since 1980. They were an ideal combine on the water, with matching intensity and drive. however one late afternoon in 2001, once Brown was lxxxiii, Huff poled for AN hour into the wind to urge Brown in position to fish. Huff waited for Brown to carry up his finish of the discount and solid for a fish. however, Brown place his rod down and told Huff he needed to travel in. Huff was wracked with heaving sobs as he ran the boat in. At the dock, he told Brown through tears that he couldn't fish with him any longer. “It was very my downside,” Huff says. “Del was obtaining older and that i simply didn’t need to admit it. It busts my heart.” Brown died 2 years later.
Huff has witnessed several strange moments throughout his cardinal years on the water. AN unhooked 100-pound malacopterygian once leaped into his boat and hit a feminine shopper squarely within the chest. (On his boat future year, she wore a flak jacket as a gag.) One year he was fishing with Tom Evans once Evans suddenly had to use the lavatory. As Evans adorned off the rear of the boat, he asked Huff to solid for a rolling malacopterygian. Huff did, and he hooked and landed a 186-pound malacopterygian, which might are the globe record. however, Huff ne'er submitted it to the IGFA. “Tom needed that record thus badly,” he says. per week later, Huff junction rectifier Evans into a 177-pounder, that so did become the globe record.
But maybe the strangest factor happened with a person named Everett Watkins, United Nations agency flew from CA to fish with a disciple United Nations agency had started a visit with Huff. Watkins, AN weighty man, hooked a 125-pound malacopterygian on one among his initial casts. however, he vies the fish terribly slowly as if he were during a trance. “I told him he required in grips down on the fish as a result of there area unit solely 2 things that might happen: He would land the fish or he would break down,” says Huff. “Little didi do know there was truly a 3rd situation.”
With the fish still on his line, Watkins suddenly folded face-first onto the bow. Huff bust off the fish and ran back to the dock at full speed. “He was blue after they loaded him onto the car,” Huff says. It clothed that Watkins had AN aneurysm and was dead before he hit the deck. “I felt very unhealthy and that i asked his crony what we must always do,” Huff says. “He told ME Everett would have needed USA to travel back and fish. So we did. and that we caught 2 nice malacopterygians.” The incident spawned over many unhealthy jokes. “People aforesaid, ‘Damn, Steve, people very area unit dying to fish with you,’ and ‘Why did you break the fish off?’” Huff says. He currently takes AN angler back to the dock at the primary sign of physical distress.

Luckily, I feel pretty smart on this overcast and funky morning as Huff and that i build a thirty-minute run into the center of what Peter Matthiessen referred to as “shadow country”—the large sky, knotty mangroves, and moving water that area unit the swamp. Huff cuts the engine and hops au fait his poling platform. He’s sporting a khaki-colored shirt and pants and a combine of closed-toed Crocs. He propels the boat forward with apparently very little effort along with his twenty-one-foot pole. We’re when robolo, the fish that has remained Huff’s favorite since his childhood days in Miami.

I fill in the bow and solid a yellow streamer that Huff devised. (“It doesn’t have a reputation. It’s simply ruminant hair and chicken feathers,” he says.) The wind from AN incoming storm is brisk however not intolerable. I’m not specifically throwing strikes with each solid. I begin to press a touch, and also the casts get even worse. Huff provides ME an important pointer: “Just hold your back solid a touch longer,” he says. I quickly see positive results. Huff poles the USA on, fifty feet some from the bank. rapidly, I begin obtaining solid takes, ANd at intervals an hour, I’ve landed 5 small (two- to four-pound) Robalo.
